As most people in this group and most people who use guns for self
defense are civilians, the question refered to a civilian self
defense scenario.
Given that, the scenario would be to defend against one or a few BGs
at relatively short (home defense or car-jacking) ranges.
The operative phrase is "to neutralize the threat." Given one could
be shooting anything from .17 to .50BMG cailbre, the question was of
a general nature.
Next time I'll come up with a 3,000 word poll question just for you,
