Dont't forget that the key term in this project is the "$10." If you go
with a Xenon bulb and a pyrex lens you will probably be approaching
what you would pay for a cheap "real" police flashlight from a discount
catalog (eg, Cheapr Thn Dirt) and/or on sale.
This is a DIY mod project so there are no "rules" about what
replacement parts you use.
You are going from 3 volts of battery power to 9 volts and probably
getting a good bump in milliamps. So if you stick with a replacement
Krypton bulb of the same volts and milliamps you will get the greatest
increase in brightness at the expense of bulb life--and the greatest
chance of melting the original plastic lens. Higher voltage bulbs will
yield less brightness and greater bulb life.
As for a replacement lens--lexan, mica, glass, or pyrex, that could be
a real budget (could easily double the price of the project) and time
(finding and/or modifying a replacment) killer. A website like
brightguy.com has accessory lenses and a google search is sure to eat
up some serious time. Then there is the challange of getting a
replacement lens of the correct diameter and thickness or buying a
larger lens and grinding it down.
You pay for your kicks.
