The story implies that the firearm that ended the difficulties was a 30-06,
which would be fairly authoritative at inside-the-house ranges. While hard
on the ears, it would be (and was!!) a 'best choice'. Geez, I get a
headache just thinking about firing one of those inside a house.

From my read of the article, the gunfight started with a .410, fired to little or no effect, but was ended by a hit to the aggressor's hip with a .30-06. ...
