HK 91/ G3 parts swaps?   Message List

Re: HK 91/ G3 parts swaps?

ALL G3 parts (except the receiver) may be used in an HK91 except the
receiver, but many (FCG parts, trigger pack - i.e. FCG box, trigger
group frame, and bolt carrier) need to be modified. AFAIK, NONE of
the "HK91 specific" parts will work properly in a G3. The G3 paddle
style magazine relase needs to be installed by an expert, or you risk
accidentally making your HK91 receiver into a machinegun receiver
(the installation CAN be done, but speciifc things have to be dne in
specific order to avoid breaking the law -- leave it to a
professional who KNOWS what he is doing).

Whether or not using these G3 parts is legal IN YOUR GUN depends on
three factors:

1. The parts that are different from the factory MUST (in general)
be modifed to HK91 standard to avoid "machinegun complications". In
general, ANY of the "G3 parts" may be modified into functional "HK91
parts", and most of these modifications involve removing stuff, NOT
adding it. If you have done so to your parts, you move to the next
question.

2. IS YOUR GUN subject to the ban on "assembling a non-sporting
shotgun or semiautomatic rifle from imported parts"? If not (i.e.,
if the gun pre-dates the 1989 cut-off date in the regulation, or it
is a pistol or if it is ATFE registered - like Any Other Weapons or
Short Barreled Rifles - under the National Firearms Act, it is
exempted), no problem, stop reading, and build away in accordance
with your LOCAL laws. If your gun IS possibly subject to what most
of us in teh gunbuilding world call the "10 Part Rule", then you HAVE
TO check the next question.

3. The infamous "10 Part Rule" (AKA "Parts Count"). . . Basically,
for guns that are subject to this administrative rule, if you build a
gun out of too many imported parts, it is considered an imported gun
(regardless of where it was made) and has to meet CURRENT import
criteria for "sporting purposes"; likewise if you DON'T have "too
many" imported parts, then the gun is considered "US made" under this
rule, and can ignore it. If your gun is subject to the "10 Part
Rule", then you have to make sure that you DO NOT use more than 10
imported parts (from a list of 20 possible parts). The way you do
this is you buy certain "US-made" parts and replace foreign parts
with the US parts until you bring the all-over count of foreign parts
(from the list) to 10 or fewer. Keep in mind that your magazine
counts as THREE seperate parts (magazine body, magazine follower,
magazine floorplate) and your stock system counts as THREE parts
(buttstock, pistol grip, handguard). Which parts apply to which gun
depends on teh model -- off the top of my head, I believe that an
HK91 has 17 qualifying (muzzle device, barrel, bolt, bolt
carrier, "op rod" - i.e. the HK cocking handle, receiver, trigger
group frame, trigger, disconnector, hammer, sear, 3 parts for
furniture, 3 parts for magazine). Only 10 of these may be foreign
made (modifying a foreign part will NEVER make it be considered "US
made", regardless of what some "experts" will say on the Web). Some
of these parts may be omitted entirely - like the muzzle device, but
in general, you will have to swap out 7 parts for "Made in the USA"
equivalents. The best bang for your buck is probably muzzle device,
furniture, sear, disconnector, & hammer, unless you are using a US
made receiver (which would count for one part all by itself).
