I have a Mini 30, 3 SKSs, 2 AK types, and about 5 AR 15s.

I mostly hunt with the Mini 30 and actually shot a deer (doe) last
year with it using the heavy Wolf 150 something gr ammo. It gets 4-5
inches at 100 yards but where we hunt we rarely get a shot past 60
yards. I've had problems on deer with the lighter weight bullets.

For economical shooting the SKS is king. I have a Chinese, short
barreled (paratrooper?), a regular preban Chinese and a Russian. Ammo
is cheap and the guns are fun to shoot. IMHO, most SKS and AK
accessories are junk. I've tried most of them and they are a waste of
money. Stick with the basic configuration.

The AKs are fun to shoot, ammo and 30 round mags are cheap. The
problem is finding a range that will let you shoot them and SKSs.

ARs are the most expensive and the best quality. Ammo is a little
more expensive than 7.62 surplus ammo. Magazines are a lot more
expensive. The nice thing about the AR is it's accuracy and
versatility. You can have one lower and an almost unlimited number of
accessories, barrel lengths, weights and upper configurations.
