Considering the large amount of rain we've gotten over the past week,
the course is in remarkable shape. It is very playable...

However, because there is still mud rather than dirt in the bare
areas, it is not going to be workable..... after it dries out a bit,
we will be working on the upgrades again..

SO --- No Work is Scheduled Thru the 4th Of July Holiday

If you have the time, stop by and play the course....

Thanks to those who have offered and supplied help on the Boulder
Woods Course. It has had a really good cleanup this spring and many
upgrades have been put in place through hard and diligent work.

If you would like to help with the ongoing maintenance and yet-to-be
implemented upgrades, contact us about helping out....

Barring any major weather events, I should be working on the course
again this coming Sunday, July 2.....

I was on the course Friday evening cleaning up
on #10, #6, #13, and #14.... A new bench is now
in place on #14 to relax while waiting....

*** HOWEVER ***
Due to last minute work requirements I will not
be on the course tomorrow, Sunday, June 18.
***************

Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but if
you would like to help, just look for the stumps
that need to be dug up and removed or the rocks that
are jutting straight up making a trip hazard.

We have been working on Fairways #8, #9, #10, #11
and #13, #14, #15...... I'm sure the tees could also
do with another leveling up.... this seems like a
never ending task as players leave divits in the Tees.

I plan to be on the course again on Friday afternoon,
and most likely, next Sunday morning..

Thanks to Jason M. and John W. for the help on Sunday..
These efforts are a big help toward improving the course.

New dirt/stone was placed around Basket #9 that now makes a nice
landing zone.... but your disc will still slide off or roll off if you
get too much speed on it...... a great improvement without changing
the nature of the hole.... Thanks to Don D. and Dave (of the park) for
planning this out.

Thanks to Bob E. for the weedwacker attack on our course.... what a
nice cleanup he makes on the targetted fairways....

Significant work was done on the area around Tee#14 and the area
around Basket#13, getting out stumps, clearing stones from the
pathways, and leveling the dirt into a nicer fairway. And the
Basket#13 area has been cleaned up, brushed out, and is much more
playable around the tree guarding the approach.

Much, Much, More to be done.....

To everyone who has an interest in the welfare of Boulder Woods....

Don Dillon and Dave from the Park Maintenance Crew worked on uprooting
the stumps on many fairways today.... much was accomplished.....

Thanks to Don and Dave, and also to Lynn Baker, for putting muscle
into the task, and helping make the course easier to navigate.......

There are still stumps and stones that need to be moved off the
fairways... preferably about 15' off to the less used side of the
fairway (usually the inside side of the curve)......

Some stumps were not able to be popped up by the equipment on hand....
so those are going to need to be dug around and the roots cut off in
order to remove them from the center of the fairway...... (just a
quick note for the future, when cutting trees off the fairway, leave a
high stump so it can be used for leverage when it's time to remove the
stump).....

There is much clean-up yet to be done, so your help would be much
appreciated...... If you have a steel rake (stone rake) or shovel,
bring it along.... and you'll need gloves, water, insect repellant,
and maybe even sun-screen....

We will be on the course tomorrow and Sunday.....

Don will be at the course on Saturday at 10:00am and plans to bring
extra tools for those without their own..... of course, we need your
arms and legs even if you don't have a steel rake or shovel to bring
along...

On Sunday, I should be at the park near 8:00am until 12:30pm... and
I'm sure Don will be there too.... and we'll both have extra tools for
those who want to give of their time to this cause.....

Thanks, in advance, to those who help.... Please coordinate your
efforts with Don or myself so we know what's being done, and what
remains....

It would also be helpful to pick up loose rocks as you play the course.
There are plenty of loose rocks now and there will be more after 2
June. These loose rocks are potential ankle benders for all ages of
players. Please throw the rocks off the fairway in a direction not
usually played. I will have tools available on the work days if you can
not bring tools. Suggest you bring work gloves and water. Shovels, iron
racks and digging irons will also be helful.

A quick note to remind everyone about summertime playing conditions:

BE SURE TO HYDRATE
------------------
In the heat of the summer, you lose a great deal of body fluids while
enjoying a few rounds of slingin' and dunkin'..... You probably don't
even realize how much water your body is losing because it evaporates
off so quickly... It is important to drink fluids during or between
rounds to keep your body from dehydrating... And if you're going to be
on an all day marathon, be sure to take along some fruit and maybe a
sandwich to keep your body nourished....

AND PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE......
DON'T THROW BOTTLES OR OTHER TRASH ON THE COURSE!!

PROTECT OTHER PARK USERS
------------------------
With the increase in park use during the summertime, there is a much
greater chance of your disc encountering other park users. Play it
safe....

DO NOT THROW UNTIL YOU KNOW IT'S CLEAR! Check your fairways before
teeing off.... maybe even have someone in your group keep an eye on
the fairway while others are throwing (like on Hole#5)....

Boulder Woods has mandatory objects on several holes because of the
safety factor of keep away from pathways.... Keep a sharp eye out for
hikers and bikers who may 'pop out of the woods' at any moment....
Respect the mando designations because they are intended to keep
people safe from your flying disc....

PROTECT YOUR SKIN
-----------------
Using sunscreen will help prevent getting sun burned, especially if
you've not been outside much lately... And keeping your UV exposure to
a minimum will help prevent getting skin cancer (now or later in
life).... Also light color clothing will be helpful in this regard,
sometimes keeping you cooler than going bare, because it keeps the
direct sun off your skin....

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM ANIMALS
-----------------------------
Keep aware while playing the course that there are animals lurking on
the course which will harm you..... First, you should be protecting
yourself from mosquitos which may cause both temporary discomfort and
longer term sicknesses..... Second, be sure to keep alert for snakes
on the course... We mostly see black snakes (or garter snakes), which
are environmentally friendly, so DO NOT HARM THESE... But there are
copperheads (which have a dark rusty color) in this area.... these
poisonous tenants must be avoided and others warned about their
sightings.... Contact the park office with specific information about
time of day and location should you encounter a copperhead snake....

Watch out for wasps and bees which can hurt like crazy and leave you
with a lingering itch as a reminder of their displeasure..... And on
some courses, watch out for the groundhog holes.... one can easily
break a leg stepping down into one of these if you're not carefully
watching your step while walking toward your disc.....

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM DEER TICKS
--------------------------------
There are more and more cases of Lyme Disease being reported. Be sure
to check yourself very thoroughly after being outdoors, especially
since you've been under trees or in tall grasses.... Deer Ticks are so
small that it is easy to overlook them as freckles or moles....... Be
sure to shower as soon as possible after coming indoors, and check
yourself thoroughly for these unwanted hitchhikers, that love to hide
in your armpits or groin areas.

BE AWARE - PROTECT YOURSELF - PLAY SAFE

Tee pad maintenance is an ongoing effort.

When you play, please take a moment to 'fix your divets' on the tees.
When you're finished throwing, please try to smooth out the stone so
there are not big ruts or holes in the Tee Box.

And if you have the time, try to kick/scrape the stones that are
'escaping' from the tee, back into the tee area. This will go a long
way toward keeping the course in good shape for yourself and others
who follow after you.

Thanks,
Ken

The park maintenance crew will be helping us on Friday, June 2, to
'pop' stumps up out of the ground on various fairways. This is going
to make a mess.

We will need help with actually cutting the remaining roots of the
'popped' stumps, then removing the stumps off the fairways, and
finally re-leveling the ground over the stump holes.

If you would like to help, please plan to come to the course on
Fri/Sat/Sun (June 2/3/4) and bring along loping shears to cut the
roots. Be sure to cut the roots as deep in the ground as possible to
minimize the chance for regrowth and to keep them from continuing to
be a hazard.

You should throw the stumps off the fairway by at least 15',
preferrable to the least-used side of the fairway, typically to the
inside of the curve.

If you do not have tools of your own, and do not have a good neighbor
to borrow tools from, send me an email and I'll try to bring along
extra tools for you. I should be on the course Friday
afternoon/evening and Sunday morning. Email to Ken(at)PinchotDiscGolf.com.

Thanks, in advance, to those who are able and willing to help.

Pinchot Disc Golf Association Membership

The Pinchot Disc Golf Association is an association of players and
supporters of Recreational Disc Golf at Gifford Pinchot State Park. As
such, the focus and mission of the Pinchot Disc Golf Association is to:

A) provide an opportunity for the public to learn about Disc Golf
and it's local and national activities...
B) encourage the public to become regular participants in Disc Golf
as a wholesome, outdoor, low-impact, fun exercise...
C) provide support for those who want to develop their Disc Golf
skills to compete in Amateur Disc Golf events...
D) contribute ongoing support to the upkeep and development of the
Disc Golf facilities at Gifford Pinchot State Park...

The Boulder Woods Recreational Course, located at the Conewago Day Use
Area of Gifford Pinchot State Park, Lewisberry, PA, 17339, is the
particular course of support for the Pinchot DGA.

The goals for Boulder Woods were to:
   1) locate it where the public would be exposed (visually)
         to the game...
   2) create a course that would be fun (and safe) for
         the 1st time players...
   3) create a course that would challenge players to learn
         new throwing skills...
   4) create a course that would allow amateur competitors
         to hone their skills...
   5) conduct fundraising events to allow DG to help ($$)
         other community causes...
   6) help Pinchot State Park utilize land that otherwise
         was not in use...
   7) help minimize or eliminate unsavory activity at the
         Conewago Day Use Area...
   8) and, make a lasting contribution to the local community.

The Pinchot Disc Golf Association is looking for members who
appreciate the goals of Boulder Woods, who are in tune with the
mission of the Pinchot DGA, and would like to contribute money,
volunteer labor, and/or other tangible material to this effort.

The Pinchot DGA operates a website for disseminating information about
it's mission, to allow discussion of that mission, and to accumulate
reports of successful activities. This website is open for public
examination and participation separate from membership in the Pinchot DGA.

If you would like to learn more about becoming an active member of the
Pinchot Disc Golf Association, please contact me by sending an email

To a great extent, my point-of-view for the development of Boulder
Woods was/is based on representing many of those who are otherwise
unrepresented in the typical world of Disc Golf competition, and too
often, unaddressed in the world of Disc Golf course design. I have
tried to orient Boulder Woods toward the 1st time player, the
unknowing general public, and the developing recreational player, in
that order of priority.

With these people in mind, Boulder Woods, by design, does not cater to
the needs of the competitive Pro/Adv Am players, nor in many
instances, even considers their wants or needs. With an explicit
expectation that a Pro Course would eventually be implemented for the
Pro/Adv Am Players, I have worked to maintain this recreational flavor
to the nature of the Boulder Woods course.

Boulder Woods is designed and oriented toward being 'A Gateway
Course', where new players can bring their friends and family to enjoy
a day of outdoor activity, learn the game of Disc Golf in a friendly
environment, and develop their existing (or new) Disc Golf skills. As
a Gateway Course, I wanted Boulder Woods to be a place of introduction
and development, but also to allow those who have actually become
proficient in the basic Disc Golf throws to be able to find and
develop new skills.

For those who find Disc Golf exciting and enjoyable, some will want to
move on to competitive play. By providing some FREE competitive events
at Boulder Woods, it creates a venue for those so interested to
compare their skills with other players. It provides a low-threshold
introduction to competition in a friendly environment. For those who
are serious about competition, the local player can (and should) seek
out other venues where the orientation and goals are specifically
directed toward competition.

The location of Boulder Woods in the close proximity to the parking
areas, the walking trails, and other park activities is a necessity in
fulfilling it's goal as a Gateway Course. It's location is an
important aspect of introducing the general public to Disc Golf. I
have had the opportunity many times, because of the course's location,
to speak with walkers, joggers, picnickers and cyclists about the fun
of Disc Golf and it's benefits. This satisfies one of the primary
goals of having a Gateway Course.

However, just as important, the location of Boulder Woods in a
multi-use area mitigates against orienting it toward competition with
much longer fairways, which require much more powerful throws to
accomplish. Many competitive courses have more open fairways than the
area allows in which Boulder Woods is located and are less populated
with other activities. Disc Golf will always have a small risk of
interfering with other users in the same areas, but increasing the
distance of the fairways to competitive lengths in the Boulder Woods
location would increase the risk of that interference. And that usage
would also risk interfering with the more casual type of play typical
of recreational players.

In summary, to a large extent, my design criteria for Boulder Woods
has been anchored in my perception of the interests of those who
otherwise have no voice in the Disc Golf competitive community....

....the 1st-time player or the current non-player or the
non-competitive player.

If Boulder Woods is to serve this segment of the community, it needs
to have a particularly friendly, inviting, low demand, orientation --
a learning environment. For Boulder Woods to continue to serve this
segment of the community, those who understand and are in sympathy
with the interests of those players, need to guide the future development.

The History of Boulder Woods Disc Golf Course

The goals for the Boulder Woods Disc Golf Course began developing in
the Summer of 1999. After having played the Codorus Disc Golf Course
for the summer, John and I were determined to identify an appropriate
location and implement a disc golf course near to Dover. After
discussing the possibilities, we decided that we wanted to initially
build a recreational disc golf course to develop public interest in
the sport and to provide a place for players to develop their skills –
A `Gateway Course' into the world of disc golf. We would wait for the
success of this course before proposing a professional length course.
With two courses, each designed to satisfy a different need in the DG
community, we intended to minimize conflicts over course usage.

We reviewed a number of parks in the area where a disc golf course
might be developed, just in case our first proposal was turned down.
Gifford Pinchot State Park was our first choice. We reviewed the
available land at Pinchot Park and decided that the old picnic area of
the Conewago Day Use Area was very suitable for a recreational disc
golf course. It had the potential of public exposure, it had a
relatively large area of open space under old growth trees, and the
area was underutilized for quite a few years due to the closing of the
swimming beach.

We put together a formal proposal which we presented to the park
management in September of 1999. It was met with a positive response
from the local park manager, Bill Rosevear. We put together a final
layout for the course and Mr. Rosevear found a local Boy Scout (Jesse
Knaub) willing to take on the initial installation of a 9-hole course
as a project to accomplish his Eagle Scout requirements. We found
local sponsors for the baskets and the park helped to purchase the
needed baskets to complete the 18-hole full course layout by the
Spring of 2000. And Boulder Woods was born!

The goals for Boulder Woods were to:
	 1) locate it where the public would be exposed (visually) to the game...
	 2) create a course that would be fun (and safe) for the 1st time
players...
	 3) create a course that would challenge players to learn new
throwing skills...
	 4) create a course that would allow amateur competitors to hone
their skills...
	 5) conduct fundraising events to allow DG to help ($$) other
community causes...
	 6) help Pinchot State Park utilize land that otherwise was not in use...
	 7) help minimize or eliminate unsavory activity at the Conewago Day
Use Area...
	 8) and, make a lasting contribution to the local community.

Between Bill Rosevear, John (my brother), myself, the park maintenance
crew, the Boy Scouts and the local DG volunteer workers, those goals
have been accomplished.

We always had a goal of having a separate Pro Course to address the
needs of the competitive Pro Players (and Adv Amateurs). Having such a
course will also allow us to maintain the separate goals of Boulder
Woods. When we finally got the tacit DCNR approval for that course in
the Fall of 2005, I turned over the development of that course to the
newly formed Boulder Woods Country Club, with Paul Wojcik as the pro
course liaison. I am very glad to see that that course implementation
is underway.

Recreational Disc Golf Rules

While these are not the rules used for competitive disc golf (see
PDGA.com), they are appropriate for beginners - tournament rules are
much more detailed and specific.

1. Be considerate of all park resources, obey the park regulations, and
don't litter!

2. Disc golf is played using flying discs instead of a ball. One stroke
is counted each time the disc is thrown, or when a penalty is incurred.
The object is to get the lowest score.

3. Throws from the Tee must be completed from within the designated Tee
areas.

4. Order of play - After teeing off, the player whose disc is farthest
from the hole always throws first. The player with the fewest strokes on
the previous hole is the first to tee off.

5. Stance - Fairway throws must be made with the foot closest to the
hole within 12 inches behind the spot where the last throw came to rest.
The other foot may be no closer to the hole.

6. A run-up and normal follow-through, after release, are allowed when
more than 30 feet from the hole. Closer than 30 feet, a player may not
step past the lie. "Falling" or "jumping" putts are not allowed.

7. Mandatory - There may be objects on the course considered Mandatories
or Mandos. Discs must be thrown in a particular direction past these
objects, typically for safety reasons. The direction required direction
is indicated on the scorecard or the Tee post. Throwing your disc past
the Mando in the wrong direction will cost you a one stroke penalty, and
you must then make your next throw from the designated drop zone. At
Boulder Woods, this is a point 10 feet back from the missed Mando
directly toward the Tee box.

8. A disc that comes to rest inside the basket or chains constitutes
successful completion of that hole. A disc that comes to rest on top of
the pole hole does NOT constitute a successful putt.

9. A throw that lands out-of-bounds is to be carried in and played from
the point where the disc went out-of-bounds, with a one stroke penalty.
Out of bounds areas might include roads, water, pavilions, and walkways.
Alternate recreational rules do not include penalty strokes, but you
should still carry your disc back in bounds at about where it went out.
Only the Lake is out-of-bounds at Boulder Woods.

10. Never throw until the players ahead of you are out of range, and
until the fairway is completely clear of spectators and park guests. Be
polite and patient in waiting for others to clear your path or skip that
hole and play it later.

That's it! Have fun on the Recreational Boulder Woods Disc Golf Course.
