Hi, Jennine,
My reason for wanting a return to Circus Princess was so the people who only watch figure skating at Oly time could see P/T at their best. I`m proud to be a P/T fan , but would be even prouder if they were to use CP while the whole world was watching.
I have no insider info about D/V and have no particular personal dislike for D/V as people.
It`s just that I`ve always felt that Drobiazko is incapable of intricate close footwork and their programs are designed to disguise this fact.
Funny thing, they once did a program I enjoyed, a Charleston OD, something from Chicago, a vocal, but unfortunately the vocalist  was terrible,(might have been Bebe Neuwirth) and I was never able to watch that program again. My poor ears.

Bye, bye,
Arthur

Well, Arthur, old or not, the news about Tatiana
Totmianina's gallbladder problems (and P&T
subsequently becoming national champs!) was new to me,
since I am woefully behind on my skating news this
season. I need to get with it before the Olympics!

Is there any "new" news about Totmianina? Is she
expected to be well in time for the Olympics? Any
chance T&M just wanted an excuse to sit out Russian
Nats for some reason? (I am evil, too!)

Oh, and I don't care for O & S, either. I kept
wanting to like Julia Obertas, seeing as how she was
hyped up as the second coming of Katia Gordeeva, but I
just don't like what Moskvina is doing with this team.
And Obertas has definitely not lived up to the hype
for me.

Only 2 weeks before you get to see Drobiazko/Vanagas bomb at Euros.Sorry I can`t give you a hotlink to the dance lineup cuz my AOL browser is screwed up, but you can get it at FSU. BTW, DenStav and FP/M aren`t listed for some reason and I don`t think anyone knows why.
In the U.S. we won`t actually get to see D/V`s disaster, though, because we`re only getting 3 hours of Euros 2 weeks later. If D/V finishes higher than 6th, I`ll eat crow.

There`s a translation of a recent P/T interview at FSU in the Russian Nationals forum.
I`d been secretly hoping that P/T would bring Circus Princess to the Olys, but this interview tells me that ain`t gonna happen. IMHO CP is the best thing they`ve ever done and the Fellini thing is a musical muddle, although I enjoy their new moves in the program.
Also in this interview, for the second time they hint that they`re not ruling out 2006 Worlds and possibly beyond that.

Didn't Jamie Sale do a split twist with her arms over
her head? I definitely remember her having her arms
over her head at the point where Pelletier would catch
her and set her down, but I'm not sure if she kept
them overhead throughout the whole twist. (Or if that
would even be possible?)

For some reason, I'm remembering that Sale & Pelletier
only did this on their double twist, but not on the
triple. But I could be wrong!

In both short and long programs at both Skate Canada and Cup of China Maria did split twists w/her arms above her head. Looked great, neat trick, and also it keeps Alexei from possibly getting an elbow in the puss. At GPF, though, they didn`t do it at all.
I`m asking all you in the group if you`ve ever seen any other team do it or is it original.
BTW, I don`t mean for it to appear as though I think it`s easy. I doubt it is.

I know that there are a few in this group who really enjoy ice dance, well, Daphne, for one.
This website has had some downloadable Pakhomova/ Gorshkov vids recently. I find her work very enjoyable. I guess this team was pretty successful in the 70s. The vids expire after 25 downloads, but eventually someone will repost them. Best to load them to your hard drive. If you hit the square button in the upper right hand corner you can watch them fullscreen if you prefer that way.

Hi.all,
I noticed that the number of members of this group went from 23 to 36 in the past week or so. The level of activity hasn`t gone up, though, except from Marti, me, and Icesissi who may or may not be a new member.Maybe all the action is at the P/T chat room. I wouldn`t know that though cuz I`m not a member. Hope I haven`t made this group dysfunctional by my provocative posts.
I notice that Tanya`s P/T website is either down or out of business. It was there a week ago, though. If you`re still a member ,Tanya, could you please let me know what the story is? I read your whole account of your trip to Worlds in Washington and really enjoyed it, in fact I read it several times and meant to comment like you invited people to do. Tonight I was going to write you an email and that`s when I noticed that the site, which contained your email addy, was down.
There were quite a few errors in my last  couple of posts which I`ll try to correct now. It wasn`t Tong who had the bad back, it was Zhang. The fact that Pang/Tong and Z/Z finished in a different order than they normally do got me disoriented (no pun intended). Second, Emmerich Kalman, who wrote "Princess of the Cicus", wrote operettas, not ballets and also he he wasn`t popular in the early days of this century like I wrote, but rather in the early 20th century. I`m still not accustomed to living in the 21st century. In fact, even though it`s been the Chinese Year of the Rooster for a couple of months, I still catch myself writing Year of the Monkey on my checks. That gag would work even better if I were a Chinaman.
In closing, welcome all you new members.

Best regards,
Arthur

Hi Arthur!
We've missed you.  :-)
I was thinking of you during Maria and Alexei's free skate, and was wonderfing where you'd gone, and whether the list would - hopefully - spring back into life again.  :-D
Yes; Maria adn Alexei skated beautifully, and I LOVE the "Princess of the Circus" music too.
It's a signature piece of my all-time favorite male skater, the '94 Olympic Champion, Alexei Urmanov, who has said in interviews that Alexei Tikhonov, by the way, is his best friend.
I thought, in a way, that Maria and Alexei are perennial runners-up,and I want them to win Gold again, as they did in '00 when Elena and Anton had their World Championship revoked because Elena had innocently taken a cold remedy that she didn't know was a banned substance.
But I'm glad that Maria and Alexei are still eligible.  :-)
The Olympics are just around the corner now.
Do you think that they will hold out for the Olympics?
I certainly hope so!
After all, it's just one more season, and their coaching careers can wait.......
Yours sincerely,
Marti  :-)

Hi, Marti,
I bet you thought that my smoking habit croaked me and I was dead, but that hasn`t happened yet. I was thinking of you when the San Diego area had the terrrible forest fires. That must have been really scary for you. I hope they have better forest management now so that is less likely to happen again.
A year or more ago when P/T first  used "Princess of the Circus", I researched it and found IIRC that it was  a ballet by a popular Hungarian composer from early in this century who eventually became a U.S. citizen. I`m afraid to leave this window to go and re-research it, because I might not get back to this page that`s half typed.  I don`t know if you`re using YouSendIt files from FSU`s Video Vault(you should), but the other day I found a "Princess of the Circus" by Klimova/Ponomarenko but it was a different song from the ballet.I`ve been saving the video clips in my computer.Maybe you`ve been doing the same. I really needed those clips after watching the World ODs last night because I found them so disappointing. I had to go to the clips to watch some Bestiamiavova/Bukin and Pasha ODs.Don`t get me wrong though. Although I found the top 4 teams disappointing, the YouSendIt clips of the other 26 dance teams were quite entertaining.
BTW, I think that P/T would be wise to go for another season.Turin is only about 10 months away and they`re the reigning World silver medalists.Going to a second Olys can add to their resume when they start coaching.
Best regards,
Arthur

What a nice way for a team to end their competitive career (if it really is ended), with a silver at worlds.I`m very pleased as you might guess.
Now some eville stuff, almost guaranteed to p.o. some people: My greatest wish for these Worlds was for O/S to go down in flames and I got my wish. They couldn`t even beat Pang/Tong, and Tong had a badly injured back. This poor showing by O/S really messes up the Russians Federation`s plans (whee!). Do they beg P/T to stay on?
Now, my apologies to the  couple of listmembers that I stopped corresponding with. When Operation Iraqi Freedom started, I sensed the possibility of disagreement with my two correspondents because I`m a rabid Bush supporter(and I emphasize the word rabid). I was a very tense person until after the election.
More eville stuff. Shpilband is despicable. I`m  completely disgusted with the music choices in dance these days and Shpilband, I feel is probably the worst source of unimaginative choices.
Oh, before I go, Circus Princess was a great choice for P/T. Magnificent music, gives me chills its so beautiful. Oh, another thing, I`ve never seen Maria looking lovelier

That is so great to hear!  On other lists that I subscribe to, people who *never* cared for Maria & Alexei's skating before have been commenting on how much they enjoyed their program, and how they deserved to win.  I hope maybe this season Maria & Alexei will finally start to get some of the appreciation they deserve!!

I attended the skating events on Saturday and Sunday at Skate America
and I must post my reflections on their skating. Their long program
on Saturday was clearly the class of the event, and I was surprised
with their excellent technique they did not gather higher GOEs. The
program was different from their previous free programs and they
connected so well with the audience. And they skated probably their
best competition since 2002 Worlds! It was excellent, they clearly
should have won and they even had the audience support in the
decision (which is sometimes hard for a Russian team in a US
audience). They clearly put more effort into designing their tango
exhibition than most of the other skaters, and I thought it was very
well done. I wish they had won so they could have done a portion of
their "Princess of the Circus" long program again!

Hey everyone :)

Just wanted to say that Maria and Alexei have debuted their new SP &
FP at the Russian Test Skate and the FP of what I heard so far is
said to be different than their past programs. It's also interesting
that apparently Urmanov contributed to the FP choreography :)
