Alfonseca a gem in bullpen Antonio Alfonseca wasn't even a lock to make the team out of Spring Training, but with injuries to Brett Myers and Tom Gordon, the veteran has been thrust into the role of Phillies closer. Alfonseca isn't disappointing, converting five saves and earning three wins in relief. Full story

> April 20, 2007
>
> Dear Seung-Hui Cho,
>
> I know you're dead, but I have to write to you. I guess that must
> sound silly, really silly. But then, we're hardly in the position
> to discuss irrationality at this point, and you didn't give anyone
> the chance to say anything to you while you were still alive. My
> name is Emily and I am a 30-year-old alumnus of Virginia Tech. I
> graduated in 2000 with an English degree, just as I believe you
> were attempting to ascertain before all of this. I went on to earn
> a Master's degree in Secondary English Education in 2003, and I now
> teach English in a Virginia high school outside of Richmond. You
> killed my student's cousin, Matt Gwaltney. Since April 16th, we
> have discovered two guns in the hands of children in our school. If
> I'm looking for a positive to this, I guess it would be that we
> found the guns before anything as terrible as your efforts
> occurred.
>
> So, here I sit at my computer, four days after you killed 32 people
> and yourself on our campus, writing you, a total [dead] stranger.
> And I'm thinking that you're not really a stranger. Isn't that
> crazy?! I mean, we've never met, we never had a class together, and
> I didn't directly know anyone you hurt or killed. But, the truth is
> that we were both Hokies and we were both English majors and maybe
> we have both been hurt by incidents in our lives. But the
> difference is that I worked through being poorer than my wealthier
> peers by working at coffee shops in Blacksburg through college. I
> just didn't have much of an academic drive in high school, maybe
> you felt that way too with a sister at Princeton.
>
> I remember sitting alone in my apartment in Blacksburg in the fall
> of 1998 wishing I had had the experience of living in a dorm,
> because maybe then I would have friends. But do you know where I
> made friends in a matter of a few weeks after moving to Blacksburg?
> Not in a sorority, not in a Mercedes dealership parking lot, not in
> a jewelry store buying a gold necklace, but in a coffee shop making
> just enough money to pay the rent and buy some groceries.
>
> Death and brutality have a way of leaving a stench about the places
> they hit. Long after a place is cleaned up, long after they carry
> away your carelessness, people are afraid to walk the paths that
> you walked around campus. People are afraid to enter the post
> office you used to deliver your hatred nationally. It's almost like
> we're afraid to walk through some evil cloud you may have left,
> some contagious insanity you may have littered our streets with.
> But do I hate you for it? No. Don't get me wrong; I won't make
> excuses for you. I won't say, "Well, maybe he came from a bad
> home," or "Maybe something happened to him that wounded him so
> deeply," because nothing that happened before April 16th warranted
> what you did. But I won't let your darkness cast a shadow on my
> heart, because I won't let you win.
>
> See, what you don't realize is that your plan failed in so many
> ways. First of all, if your intentions in delivering the package to
> NBC were to explain to us from the grave why you did what you did,
> you didn't. I think I can speak for every Hokie when I say that we
> still don't understand who you were speaking to in the video, who
> your hatred was directed towards, or why you rambled on endlessly
> about your children that you yourself made impossible to have.
> Whatever impression you wanted to leave in our minds, unless it was
> pity and disgust for the dissertation of a madman, it didn't
> happen, Seung. And you ended your life so quickly that you can't
> come back to clarify, you can't answer your audience's questions,
> you can't take responsibility for your "work" if that's what you
> saw it as. You can't even revel in the aftermath of your mess.
>
> Virginia Tech has always had the reputation of being a "good ole
> boy's" school; I guess because we have such a well-known
> agricultural program, or maybe it's all of the cows in the fields
> that surround our campus, but Virginia Tech is a school with a
> fantastic reputation for academic excellence without the
> ostentatious attitude often associated with some of our
> counterparts. Which is why it is so hard to believe that you chose
> Blacksburg as the venue for your jealous tirade! You shot and
> killed people who rode horses, who played in the marching band, or
> who were learning foreign languages. You senselessly murdered
> people that didn't know you, that had no idea why you were angry
> with them, that probably worked jobs or earned scholarships to pay
> for their education because they too were not particularly wealthy.
> And even though I'm grateful that you didn't go to the English Hall
> that day, I realize that you chose Norris Hall and the poor souls
> in it because you were a coward who couldn't kill people you knew.
> You couldn't be Evil in the face of familiarity, and your
> convictions weren't strong enough to let you face the consequences
> of your actions. You were nothing more than a little boy with a
> hand gun, some chains, and a digital camera; a spineless child who
> lost site of the distinct line between reality and a video game,
> between humanity and a Stephen King novel.
>
> So let me tell you what your legacy is, Seung-Hui Cho. Let me tell
> you the ending since you missed it. We are better than before! We
> are stronger, more united, and better known! Show me someone now
> that hasn't heard of Virginia Tech! You brought the President of
> the United States to Blacksburg in a Hokie tie! You gave our school
> national attention, you let everyone know what a Hokie is, what our
> school colors are, what we stand for, and what a beautiful campus
> we have and are so fortunate to call home! Dr. Phil is talking
> about our resiliency on national television! Oprah Winfrey wore
> Hokie colors today! Virginia Tech was mentioned on American Idol! I
> saw people from the other side of the globe praying over candles in
> the shape of a VT. Our athletic
> competitors have sent us flowers, thoughts of love, and signs of
> faith in our ability to overcome all of this (and we will overcome
> this). You even caused UVA to paint their bridge in support of us
> and they're our biggest rivals! Money and well wishes are flooding
> in from all over the world, and people aren't talking about you;
> they're talking about us. You gave us cause to revisit our alma
> mater, to contact our old friends, to proudly boast that we are
> Hokies and that we love our school.
>
> Everyone you killed was given a degree and a first-class one-way
> ticket to a place even more beautiful than Blacksburg; a place
> you'll never know. And no one will remember your name in a year. In
> fact, I have to keep looking at the top of this letter to get your
> name right as I write this. You will be a footnote in the history
> of our success as a university. All you did was emphasize how
> truly alone you are; the very antithesis of your plan occurred. We
> stand together, a Hokie Nation, and you have been written off as a
> maladjusted lunatic who apparently flipped out because you couldn't
> get a girlfriend. What a legacy for your family to have to bear, or
> did you even consider them?
>
> Two days ago I branded myself a Hokie. That is to say I now have a
> tattoo of a little Hokie bird on my foot. Not a sad Hokie bird.
> There's no tear in his eye or black ribbon behind him, because I
> don't want to remember you. I just want to reaffirm my love and
> pride in my school. And last night my husband and I sat up making
> Hokie ribbons for people to wear today, a day determined to be
> HOKIE PRIDE, NATION-WIDE. Today I made VT buttons and key chains
> and sold them for money to donate to the Hokie Spirit foundation,
> and guess what? I sold out! I couldn't be prouder of where we are
> today. So, thanks whatever-your-name-is.
>
>
> I'll leave you with this last thought and then I promise I will
> never speak your name again. As a writer, I'd say you walked off
> stage before it was over. As a critic, I'd say your manifesto is
> incomplete and incoherent. As a teacher, I'd say the lesson you
> tried to teach was irresponsible and immature. As a mother, I'd say
> your actions were impulsive and embarrassing. And finally as a
> Hokie, I'd say I'm ashamed of you and I disown you. No Hokie would
> behave that way.
>
> Go Hokies, both in heaven and here on Earth!
>
> -Emily (Pruitt) McDaniel

'Hoos for Hokies ..And that VT Nation is HUGE and strong...As for
this cold blooded...Heartless...Evil Killer...He won't be seeing any

FEATURE STORY In the past two seasons, the Phillies playoff hopes were marred by slow starts during the month of April. This season, the Phillies tend to be a bit more organized and we are, for a refreshing change, seeing a solid plan
develop, something designed to take the team through the season. There seems to be a much more intense concentration on the fundamentals of the game. If the understanding of the little game inside the big game is here, the playoffs may follow. Jimmy has things under control.GET THE FULL STORY

PHILLIES NEWS:
EXPRESS TIME The signings and arbitration cases are all complete now. There is no other contract business scheduled for the Phillies. Now, it's Ryan's turn. The Phillies' MVP is next to see his bank account
swell. Last year, on the way to being named the league's Most Valuable Player, Howard smashed 58 homers and drove in 149 runs. He hit .311 on the way. Howard received just above the major league minimum last season. This year, the Phillies don't have to accommodate the Express if they don't want to, at least not according to any agreement between the players and manage- ment, but do look forward to Howard getting the richest payday for a for a 1st year arbitration eligible player. Look for that deal to happen soon.
BRITO'S 2007 UNCERTAIN Phillies LHP Eude Brito saw his baseball carrier flash before his eyes during the off-season. Last December 19th, in an attempt to avoid a motor-cyclist following a winter league game, Brito swerved, and his car slammed into a wall. The car's
steering column was driven into Brito's chest. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where X-rays were negative, showing only a muscle strain. Brito suffered from whiplash and wore a collar to support his neck. He was also experiencing pain and weakness in his throwing arm. He was scheduled to throw batting practice on Thursday, but instead went for an MRI after practice. He may be missing an excellent opportunity since the Phillies are in need of relief help this season.
MYERS; THE SKINNY Last season, when Brett Myers was suppose to show that he could assume the role as the ace of the pitching staff, things took an ugly turn and Myers' season became a difficult one. He struggled to shake off a Bean Town disaster in the second half of the season. If what we are seeing in
Clearwater is a sign of his character, Myers may be back on track. He arrived at spring training some twenty pounds lighter than usual, and looks to be focused. Myers' 2006 ended with a 12-7 record and a 3.91 ERA. That's decent, but far below his potential. If Myers continues to focus on baseball and rises to the occasion, he may indeed assume that number one spot in the rotation.
AT THE HELM The Phillies signed 3B Wes Helms in the off-season both because management wanted more right-handed power in the lineup, and also because Abraham Nunez batted a weak .211. Helms hit .329 with 10 home runs in 240 at-bats for the Marlins last year. A more aggressive hitter in the last two seasons, he says he is attacking the game, not letting it come to him. His weakness is still his
defense, which will open the door to more playing time for Nunez, last year's second half third baseman. If Helms can do what he did in Florida, he might become a very important part of the offense, especially if Pat Burrell struggles at the plate.
COSTE WATCH - Week 2 The battle has begin for one of two slots in the Phillies infield. Chris Coste, last season's Phillie phenomenon, is deep in battle with the likes of Greg Dobbs for that slot. Charlie Manuel says he likes Coste and may be his most loyal supporter. In addition to his .328 average and .881 OPS, he was one of the better hitters in the clutch. Coste may be a second year player, but he plays the game like a seasoned veteran and does not give into pressure, of any kind. He doesn't get rattled. Coste plays the game
like it's suppose to be played. He's the kind of player that fans like in Philadelphia. There is no quit in him. It's too early to predict what will happen. Games start this week.
Setting A Luxurious New Standard For Philadelphia Hotels...
PHIL-INS
Only minor league infielder Danny Sandoval remained absent from camp early last week, unable to leave Venezuela. It was not a visa issue, but apparently a matter with the Venezuelan justice department. He finally arrived in camp on Friday.
Manager Charlie Manuel and front office adviser Dallas Green appear to have buried the hatchet;
they've been chatting together the past few days on the field. Manuel let it be known that he didn't appreciate Green last season after Green criticized publicly.
The Phillies worked on infield drills for almost 30 minutes on Monday. Shortstop Jimmy Rollins remarked that in the past, they never did those drills for more than 15 minutes.
Larry Shenk, the Phillies' vice president of public relations, said he had not seen a crowd as big for the team's first full-squad workout since the 1980s. The Phillies ran out of parking and had to divert fans to spots across the street from Bright House Networks Field.
Outfielder Jayson Werth, who fought a wrist injury the past two years, has looked healthy in batting practice.
Charlie Manuel and his staff met after workouts on Wednesday, configuring a schedule that will incorporate a daily session of fundamental drills.
Bench coach Jimy Williams has been working on small-ball basics with outfield prospects Michael Bourn, Chris Roberson, and Greg Golson.
The Phillies will be paying $4.35M for services at third base this season: Wes Helms will receive $2.55M while Abraham Nunez will see $1.8M. Nunez will also play elsewhere in the infield.
The players nominated for the all-time Rawlings Gold Glove team who won GoldGloves as Phillies are Mike Schmidt (10), Garry Maddox (8), Scott Rolen (7overall, 4 with the Phillies), Jim Kaat (16, 2 with the Phillies) Bob Boone (7, 2 with the Phillies), and Bill White (7, 1 with the Phillies).
The Mets have come to terms with former Phillies RHP Jose Santiago on a minor league contract.
Sabermetrician and Moneyball inspiration Bill James told The Inquirer in December that he considers Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins one of the top six leadoff hitters in
baseball. Rollins has scored 361 runs over the last three seasons. The only other player in baseball to score more runs in that span is St. Louis first baseman Albert Pujols.
Most baseball people are picking Freddy Garcia to be the Phillies opening day starter. Brett Myers may have something to say about that.
The Phillies have had identical records in the past two Aprils: 10-14. They went 9-18 last June.
Pat Gillick says he feels that the physical evaluation of a player, that which you do with your eyes, is most important part of scouting. That extends off the field into evaluating what type of guy he is. He feels that this is more important than statistics.
Third-base coach Steve Smith again worked hands-on fielding fundamentals with first baseman Ryan Howard, who is a gifted athlete, but has some flawed fielding mechanics.
Charlie Manuel said he was impressed with righthander Joe Bisenius, a 24- year-old reliever who is
expected to start at AAA Ottawa.
The Phillies and every other team in baseball will replace their traditional woolen caps this season with polyester-blend caps designed to soak up the moisture and prevent sweat from dripping down players' faces. The Phillies will debut the caps on April 2nd at Citizens Bank Park.
First baseman Ryan Howard and righthander Brian Sanchesremain the only unsigned players on the 40-man roster. The automatic renewal date is March 2nd.
The Phillies optioned RHP Yoel Hernandez to AAA Ottawa last week. Hernandez still hasn't pitched this spring because of a right-shoulder strain that limited him to just nine games for AAA Scranton last season.
The Phillies currently have 38 players on their 40-man roster.
Mike Schmidt will arrive in camp on Monday, Garry Maddox on Tuesday, and Johnny Podres next Thursday. Robin Roberts will be in and out of camp throughout the spring.
More than 65,000 single-game
tickets were sold on Wednesday on the first day they were available. Opening Day, April 2nd against Atlanta, is sold out.
Former Phillie Curt Schilling said that he would become a free agent after the season, but would not let that be a distraction during his fourth year with the Boston Red Sox.
The Phillies won't play an intrasquad game to prepare for their Grapefruit League schedule. Instead, they will use Wednesday's game against Florida State as the warm-up.
Lefthander Jamie Moyer schooled some Phillies minor-leaguers during batting practice on Friday. He broke a couple of bats with his off-speed stuff.
A nutritionist spoke with the Phillies about better health before workouts on Friday
Jimmy Rollins is hosting his second annual BaseBowl Tournament at Lucky Strikes in Philadelphia on May 31st. The event sold out last year. For more information, call Kimberly Crossett at 310-858-1872.
The Phils are expected to open the regular season with three of their former No. 1 picks in their rotation: Brett Myers (1999), Cole Hamels (2002), and Adam Eaton (1996).
The Phillies signed two young pitchers during a tryout camp for players from independent baseball leagues. Jake Ociesa and Mike McTamney, both pitchers, received minor league contracts.
Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said he intends to keep Jimmy Rollins in the leadoff spot and follow him with Shane Victorino. Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, and Pat Burrell are set to occupy the following three places. Aaron Rowand and Wes Helms to contend for the sixth spot in the order with the catcher batting eighth.
The Phillies have initiated preliminary contract talks with Ryan Howard's agent, Casey Close. QUOTE OF THE WEEK "Even though those statements kind of put the bull's-eye on you, when they come from
players, I like to hear that. It means they feel good about themselves and they feel good about their teammates, so I like to hear those kinds of positive comments." - Phillies G.M. Pat Gillick responding to Jimmy Rollins comments saying the Phillies are the team to beat in NL East. PHILLIES DID YOU KNOW? Bright House Networks Field was built in 2004 and holds 8,500 people. It is the Phillies spring training home and the home stadium of the Class A Florida State League Clearwater Threshers. The stadium is named after the cable company Bright House Networks. Previously, the Phillies held spring training at Jack Russell Memorial Stadium. Field Dimensions: Left - 329 ft. Left Center - 389 ft. Center - 408 ft. Right - 330 ft. The ballpark has a 360-degree main concourse, grass berm seating, and a tiki-hut pavilion in left field. It includes group picnic areas, a children's play area, and a state-of- the-art video score
board. The facility covers a total of 17.5 acres of space at the former Home Depot site on U.S. 19 near Drew Street. The $25 million project was funded through a unique public-private partnership that included Pinellas County, the City of Clearwater, the State of Florida, and the Phillies. FEATURE STORY Baseball's back. Clearwater's open. As is the case every spring, there are questions that need to be answered and the major questions in this year's camp include what to do with Jon Lieber, what Pat Burrell will
do, what will happen in the bull pen, and what will happen with Chris Coste. The player garnering the most attention in camp is Pat Burrell. Can he do enough to make Dallas and Mike happy? GET THE FULL STORY
This Week's Question: I was born on February 9, 1961 in Charleston, West Virginia. I was dealt to the Phillies during the 1989 season, and was an All-Star in 1991, 1992, and 1993. On July 30, 1995, I singled and took myself out of the game while playing for the White Sox. I left the ballpark,
never to play again. I finished my 10-year ML career with exactly a .300 batting average and exactly 100 home runs. Who am I?

PHILLIES NEWS:
PHILLIES SIGN GEARY; AVOID ARBITRATION The Phillies signed RHP Geoff Geary to a one year contract. Geary agreed to a contract worth $837,500. The team's most efficient reliever in last year, who had a
2.96 ERA in 91 1/3 IP, asked for $925,000 and was offered $750,000 in his first year of arbitration. In an inflated off-season market, where pitchers have commanded a great deal more than their worth, Geary's performance would have provided the potential set-up man with considerably more than he received. Look for him to be a key part of the Phillies bullpen again this season.
BURRELL SAYS HE'S READY Pat Burrell is one of the Phillies players who has arrived in Clearwater ahead of schedule. Last season, Burrell hit .258 with 29 homers and 95 RBI. He also hit .222 with runners in scoring position, something that his bosses feel has to change for the lineup to reach its potential. This season, the veteran professes to be ready. Burrell has been criticized for his off the field
exploits as one of the reasons for a level of play that management feels needs to improve. If Burrell can cut down on his major league leading called third strikes, we might just see the real Pat Burrell batting fifth for the Phillies.
LIEBER GOING DAY TO DAY Phillies RHP Jon Lieber arrived in Clearwater as one of six Phillies starters, and the one most likely to be shipped elsewhere before the April 2nd regular season opener. Lieber has been a very public source of trade talks since the Phillies acquired LHP Freddy Garcia in December. For a man who likes to keep a low profile, Lieber finds himself in the lime-light. He says he is approaching the season in a day-to-day fashion. Lieber won 17 games in 2005, but he struggled last season, going 9-11 with a 4.93 ERA. The Phillies
do not consider him a viable option for the bullpen, so Lieber may be the odd man out. He is a free-agent at the end of the year. Lieber said that trade talks in July did affect his concentration. He'll make $7.5M this season, the last year of a 3-year contract.
PHILLIES TO LOOK AT DOBBS New Phillies INF Greg Dobbs arrived in Clearwater on Thursday. The team is looking for a left-handed hitter, and Phillies G.M. Pat Gillick claimed him off waivers on January 16th. Dobbs is yet another player Gillick has brought in from his stays with other clubs. Dobbs, 28, had a productive year with AAA Tacoma in 2006, hitting .314 in 379 at- bats. He had nine home runs. Dobbs hit .370 in 27 at-bats for Seattle. He has the ability to put the ball in play, but is no upgrade over Chris Coste, who can also catch. Dobbs can also play in the outfield, but the Phillies do not need his services there.
COSTE WATCH - Week 1 Phillies INF/C Chris Cost was the Phillies feel good story last season. Called up from AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre when Mike Lieberthal went down to injuries, Coste probably could have started on a few other major league teams. Coste was back in an uncomfortable but familiar position when the Phillies signed catcher Rod Barajas in the off-season. Though he hit .328 and did performed well behind the plate, Coste is now the team's third catcher, emergency corner man, and pinch-hitter. Though management felt the need to add depth to the position, keeping Coste's bat out of the lineup could cost the team, and what will happen if Chris Coste has a stronger
spring than Barajas? The Watch begins.

PHIL-INS
Charlie Manuel said he doesn't plan to use closer Tom Gordon for more than an inning at a time, and will try not to pitch him more than three straight days. He also will try and limit the amount of times Gordon pitches in non-save situations.
Pat Burrell may do less running in spring training, in an effort to help his troublesome right foot.
Once again, the Phillies avoided arbitration hearings. Geoff Geary was the Phillies final pending arbitration case.
Charlie Manuel said he told Jon Lieber that he saw him as a starter, meaning that the veteran will likely not see any time in the
bullpen.
Five pitchers appear to be locks for the bullpen: Tom Gordon, Antonio Alfonseca, Geoff Geary, Ryan Madson, and Matt Smith.
The Cleveland Indians agreed to terms with former Phillies RHP Cliff Politte on a minor league contract.
The Texas Rangers agreed to terms with former Phillies INF Desi Relaford on a minor league contract.
After two weeks of working out, the Phillies will play an exhibition game at Bright House Networks Field on February 28th against Florida State University. They open the home portion of their Grapefruit League schedule on March 2nd against the Indians.
All but two pitchers and catchers had physicals on time for spring workouts. Righthander Freddy Garcia was one day late, and Rule 5 draftee Alfredo Simon was delayed in the Dominican Republic with passport problems
The Phillies agreed to terms with LHP Fabio Castro, RHP Clay Condrey, LHP Cole Hamels, RHP Alfredo Simon, INF Greg Dobbs, and OF Chris
Roberson on one-year contracts.
All pitcher and catchers were in camp on Thursday, although pitcher Alfredo Simon couldn't participate because he hadn't completed his physical.
Phillies' new bench coach Jimy Williams stressed bunting to the pitchers. The Phillies had the second-lowest total of sacrifice bunts in the National League in 2006,
In a team meeting, pitching coach Rich Dubee stressed his desire for the catchers to be more assertive in their game-calling.
Phillies RHP Scott Mathieson played catch from 60 feet in Florida, his furthest distance yet. He threw 60 tosses and maintained that he's feeling great in his rehabilitation from Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery.
Ryan Howard posed for a photo shoot Friday afternoon for Philadelphia magazine.
Antonio Alfonseca, Ryan Madson, and Geoff Geary are all competing to be the team's new set-up man.
The Phillies don't plan to approach Freddy Garcia about a
contract extension, and Garcia has little intention of asking for one. Garcia is a free agent at season's end. Considering that Garcia did have some shoulder issues last year, the Phillies will certainly want to see how he performs before they consider locking him up to a long term deal.
The Phillies have built this year's advertising campaign built around the "Goosebumps" theme.
Phillies LF Pat Burrell ranked eighth in the National League last season with 29 go-ahead RBI. Ryan Howard ranked second with 33.
Some Phillies front office people see Fabio Castro as a starter, but that would require more seasoning at AAA Ottawa. Charlie Manuel would prefer to see him fill the role of departed Aaron Fultz in the bull pen.
OF Jayson Werth may see some time during spring training at catcher and first base
In 2005, Pat Burrell slugged 32 homers, collected 117 RBI, and batted .313 with runners in scoring position, but last season, he
batted just .222 in such situations.
Jamie Moyer has made 26 or more starts in every season since 1995 and has 216 career victories. Kyle Drabek, the Phillies' No. 1 pick in the 2006 draft, is in big-league camp. Drabek negotiated an invititation as part of his signing bonus.
For the first time since 1972, former Phillies trainer Jeff Cooper won't be in Clearwater. Cooper retired at the end of last season. Steve Sheridan is the new Phillies trainer.
The Phillies have offered Antonio Alfonseca the big-league minimum of $380,000, which jumps to $700,000 if he makes the 25-man roster
Phillies pitchers ranked last in the National League in hitting last season with an .092 batting average.
Former Phillies 1B Jim Thome on Opera....Here. QUOTE OF THE WEEK "It's neat to have money, it's neat to have good looks, and it's neat to have broads all over you, but there comes
a time in every player's life when he needs to get his act together." - Dallas Green on Pat Burrell PHILLIES DID YOU KNOW? They won the NL East and the NL Pennant in 1993. Contrary to popular opinion, the 1993 Phillies were not comprised of cliques. The most notable allegiance was a section of the clubhouse dubbed by reporters as "Macho Row." Players affectionately referred to the congregation of Darren Daulton, Lenny Dykstra, Pete Incaviglia, John Kruk, Dave Hollins, and Mitch "Wild Thing" Williams as "the Ghetto". They were the leaders appointed by manager Jim Fregosi to keep everyone in line. Everyone got along on and off the field and went out together after the game. The 1993 Phillies played 162 games during the regular season. They won 97 games and lost 65. They beat the Braves in six games to win the NL Pennant and lost to the Blue Jays in
six games in the World Series. Myers finished fifth in the NL in strikeouts (189), compiling a league-leading 107 in the second half of the season.
The Phillies locked up one of the key members of their rotation on Thursday, agreeing to a three-year contract extension with right-hander Brett Myers. The deal, which avoids two arbitration years and one year of potential free agency, is pending a physical.
Myers went 12-7
with a 3.91 ERA in 31 starts in 2006, leading Philadelphia's pitching staff in wins, ERA, starts, innings (198), strikeouts (189), winning percentage (.632) and opponents' batting average (.257). Full story » Myers' career stats »

NEWS:
SMITH IS PHILLIES NEW 3B COACH The Phillies named Steve Smith third-base coach last Monday. Smith replaces Art Howe, who left last month to become new Rangers manager Ron Washington's bench coach. Smith had spent the past five seasons as the Rangers' third-base coach and infield instructor. Smith also coached for Seattle (1996-99), and spent two seasons (2000-01) with Milwaukee as a roving infield instructor and Minor League manager. In 2000, he led Indianapolis to the International League championship. As a player, Smith spent seven seasons (1976-82) as a second baseman and shortstop in San Diego's Minor League system.
WOLF
SIGNS WITH LOS ANGELES Randy Wolf signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday. The Phillies hoped the 30-year-old would round out the bottom part of the rotation after he spent the better part of last season rehabbing from Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery. The lefty went 4-0 with a 5.56 ERA in 12 starts in 2006. Wolf signed a one-year deal with a club option for 2008. The Phillies were believed to be offering more to retain him, but the lure of pitching for his hometown team was too difficult to resist. Wolf is from nearby Canoga Park, California and attended Pepperdine University. He still lives in the Los Angeles area. He went 69-60 with a 4.21 ERA in his Phillies career, which began in 1999.
PHILLIES SIGN EATON The Phillies signed free agent pitcher
Adam Eaton to a three-year contract worth more than $24 million. The contract includes a mutual option for a fourth year that could bring the overall package to more than $33 million. Eaton will make $6.875 million in 2007, $7.635 million in 2008, and $8.5 million in 2009. The deal also includes a $1 million signing bonus and there is a $500,000 buyout of the mutual option for 2010 and incentives clauses for each year. Eaton was the Phillies first-round pick and the 11th choice overall in the 1996 draft. Three years later the Phillies sent him to San Diego for RHP Andy Ashby. Eaton, 29, is 54-45 with a 4.40 ERA in parts of seven seasons with San Diego and Texas.
DELLUCCI SIGNS WITH TRIBE The Cleveland Indians reached an agreement with former Phillies OF David Dellucci
on a three-year, $11.5 million contract. Dellucci will join another former Phillie OF in Cleveland as Jason Michaels also plays for the Indians. Dellucci, 33, spent last season as a pinch hitter and part time player after the Rangers traded him to the Phillies last April. He performed well in his limited role, hitting 13 homers and producing an .899 OPS in 264 at bats. A 10-year veteran, Dellucci has a career .348 on-base- percentage.
INDIANS SIGN FULTZ The Cleveland Indians signed LHP Aaron Fultz, who was with the Phillies, to a one-year contract with a club option for 2008. The Phillies elected not to offer Fultz, a Type-A free agent, arbitration. In doing so, Cleveland did not have to offer the Phillies any compensation for Fultz. Fultz's ERA jumped from 2.24 to 4.54
last season, but he still had a nice 62/28 K/BB ratio in 71 1/3 innings. Lefties have hit .240 off him in his career. The move does leave Pat Gillick with a spot to fill in the bull pen. It looks like Gillick feels he can get what Fultz can bring for less.
GILLICK AND CO. IN FLORIDA Major League Baseball's winter meetings are set to begin in Orlando, Florida this Monday. Pat Gillick wants to bring in a proven setup man who can occasionally close and also keep Tom Gordon fresh. Bull pen help is also on the menu with relievers Aaron Fultz, Arthur Rhodes, and Rick White not returning return. Gillick will, once again, shop LF Pat Burrell and there are reports that he will look into another catcher, though that is not deemed a priority. Also being mentioned is CF Aaron Rowand. The meetings are slated to run through Thursday.
Setting A Luxurious New Standard For Philadelphia Hotels...
PHIL-INS
Pat Gillick said the Phillies were never in talks with Arizona for catcher Johnny Estrada, who was traded to Milwaukee, and they still have no interest in free agent Mike Piazza.
The Phillies named Kevin Jordan manager and Ed Hodge pitching coach for Lakewood of the South Atlantic League, Brad Komminsk coach for Clearwater of the FSL, and Greg
Gross hitting coach and Jason Kirkman trainer for Reading of the EL.
Former Phillies third base coach Bill Dancy will resume his role as minor league field coordinator, while Mike Compton, who held that position the last two seasons, will return to his prior position as catching coordinator. In addition to his coordinating duties, Compton will also serve as a special assistant to Dancy. Coordinators Gorman Heimueller (pitching), Don Long (hitting), Jerry Martin (outfield/baserunning) and Dave Owen (infield) will all return. Dong Lien was named the new minor league conditioning coordinator.
The Phillies offered arbitration to OF David Dellucci, but declined to offer arbitration to LHP Aaron Fultz, INF Alex S. Gonzalez, INF Jose Hernandez, C Mike Lieberthal, LHP Arthur Rhodes, and RHP Rick White. The Phillies will receive the Indians' third-round pick and a supplemental first-rounder once Dellucci's signing becomes official.
The Phillies remain interested in pitchers Miguel Batista (as a reliever), Joe Borowski, and David Weathers.
The Giants are aggressively pursuing David Weathers, who was 4-4 with a 3.54 ERA for the Reds.
Adam Eaton's best statistical season came in 2003, when he posted a 4.08 ERA in 183 innings, allowing 173 hits and 68 walks.
The Phillies are leaning toward moving left-hander Fabio Castro back to the rotation next season. If
that's the case, he'll almost certainly start the year at AAA Ottawa.
The Phillies denied a report that they're speaking to the Rangers about Pat Burrell. Burrell has said he'll only waive his no-trade clause for the Red Sox, Yankees, and West Coast teams.
The Phillies have replaced last season'starters Gavin Floyd, Ryan Madson, and Cory Lidle with Cole Hamels, Jamie Moyer and, Adam Eaton.
The Phillies are believed to still be negotiating with Joe Borowski on a 1-year deal.
The Phillies are reportedly unwilling to deal young lefty pitching prospects Gio Gonzalez, Fabio Castro, James Happ, or Joe Bisenius, who hasn't pitched above AA.
As the winter meetings begin, the Phillies have Geoff Geary, Ryan Madson, and possibly Matt Smith to bridge the gap to closer Tom Gordon.
The Phillies are also showing interest in LaTroy Hawkins as Tom Gordon's set-up man
The Phillies are interested in Toronto OF Vernon Wells. They may not have enough to acquire him at the present time though.
The Phils aren't optimistic about finding a setup reliever among the remaining free agent relievers, but do have some interest in a few for lesser roles, veterans such as David Weathers, Ron Villone, and Alan Embree. QUOTES OF THE WEEK "I could have gone to the highest bidder. But for me, going to the highest bidder wasn't the important thing. It was going to a place where I always dreamt of playing." - Former Phillies Pitcher Randy Wolf "It might be a situation where we don't fill our need for a hitter. I can't really make any assurances that we'll get a hitter in the next thirty days or the next sixty days. We're optimistic maybe prior to the season we can do something. But I can't really make any assurances or commitments that it's going to happen." - Phillies General manager Pat GillickPHILLIES DID YOU KNOW The "Curt Flood Act of 1998". SEC. 2. PURPOSE. The deal, which was first reported late Monday afternoon, includes a club option for a fourth year that could
bring the total value to $33 million.

This Week's Question: I was born on August 27th, 1970, in Peoria, Illinois. I once jumped onto Wrigley Field and into the Cubs dugout before a game, hoping to get Dave Kingman to sign a ball. I broke into the majors as a 3B, but didn't stay at that position. I have a career .565 career slugging

THE HOWARD MVP WATCH - Week 10 Ryan Howard is in line for yet one more award. Howard is a finalist for the overall Player of the Year Award and the National League Outstanding Player in the Players Choice Awards. The awards are a result of votes from ML players and will be announced on November 8th. Balloting for the Players Choice Awards, presented annually since 1992, was conducted on September 12th-13th at Major League Baseball parks under the supervision of the accounting firm KPMG.
NO OPTIONS HERE Aaron Rowand and the Phillies declined their respective options last Wednesday, meaning
that barring a trade, the center fielder will return to Philadelphia in 2007. Rowand had until Wednesday to accept his $3.25M player option. He declined and the Phillies also declined their $5 million club option. Unless the sides reach an agreement, Rowand's salary will be determined by an arbitrator. In an injury plagued 2006, Rowand batted .262 with 12 home runs and 47 RBI.
VOTE FOR RICHIE The voting for the annual Ford C. Frick Award is upon us again. Three Phillies are on the ballot; Richie Ashburn, Chris Wheeler, and Andy Musser. Of the three, Ashburn has the best chance. Ashburn was enshrined in Cooperstown as a player in 1995 by the Veterans Committee. After his retirement in 1962, he joined the broadcast team of By Saam and Bill Campbell. He later teamed up with
Harry Kalas, beginning in 1971. His 35-year broadcasting career ended when he passed away on September 9th, 1997. Fans can get in on the voting Here.
PHILLIES EYEING SORIANO Former Washington Nationals LF Alfonso Soriano is on General Manager Pat Gillick's radar screen. Soriano may be the Phillies best option to bat behind Ryan Howard next season. He hit 46 home runs last season, including 24 at spacious R.F.K. Stadium. That total could be exceded by playing half his games at cozier Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Soriano, who has played for three teams since 2003, is looking long-term security and will seek a multiyear deal that could exceed $100 million. This means the Phillies may need to move
Pat Burrell's hefty contract before Soriano could move into the red pinstripes. Look for Soriano to be one of the hotter commodities in the off-season. The Phillies can't make an official offer until November 12th.
LIEBER ON THE MOVE? Former number one starter Jon Lieber, who has been inconsistent in his tenure as a Phillie, is one of the names being mentioned as the Phillies attempt to sure up the starting rotation and the bull pen. The Phillies are considering moving the 36-year-old right-hander, who is due to earn $7.5 million this season. He was a disappointing 9-11 with a 4.93 earned-run average this season, arguably his worst full season in the majors. The Phillies shopped Lieber last season. The Yankees have expressed some interest in reacquiring the veteran. Moving
Lieber back to New York could be part of a potential Gary Sheffield package.
BURRELL BUDGING Pat Burrell's representatives now indicate that he would accept a trade to the San Francisco Giants. The Giants might ask Burrell to switch back to first base, the position he played in 2000. Burrell, 30, is owed $13 million this season and $14 million next season. He hit .258 with 29 home runs and 95 RBI this season, but he struggled in the clutch. The Giants might want the Phillies to take closer Armando Benitez, who has a $7.6 million salary for this season. Benitez, 34, had 17 saves in 25 chances and was 4-2 with a 3.52 ERA. He spent time on the 60-day DL due to an arthritic right knee which limited him to 41 games this season.
DELLUCCI OPTS FOR FREE AGENCY Phillies OF David Dellucci elected to go the way of free agency on Thursday. Dellucci, 33, hit .292 with 13 home runs and 39 RBI in 264 at-bats. He received the bulk of his playing time after July 31st, when Bobby Abreu was dealt to the Yankees. While the Phillies would like Dellucci to return, he wants the security of a full-time job, a scenario that likely won't play out in Philadelphia. Dellucci earned $900,000 in 2006.
David Montgomery said the team's budget would stay in the $91 million to $95 million range it has been in since 2004, when the club moved into Citizens Bank Park.
In addition to Alfonso Soriano, the Phillies are also interested in Gary Sheffield and Aramis Ramírez.
The Phillies also have considerable interest in Japanese third baseman Akinori Iwamura. Iwamura, 27, a lefthanded hitter, batted at least .300 with 30 homers the
last three seasons for the Yakult Swallows.
Josh Kroeger went 2-for-6 with a homer for the Aguilas of the Venezuelan Winter League on Tuesday. Kroeger, trying to shake off a very rough season at AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, is batting .300/.386/.420 in 50 at-bats. He cleared waivers after being removed from the Phillies' 40-man roster in September, so it looks like he'll be back in AAA with the team next year.
Speculation is that the Phillies think Randy Wolf is worth between $6 million and $10 million per season over two years with vesting options in the deal.
Zack Segovia pitched a scoreless frame against the Scottsdale Scorpions last Saturday to lower his ERA to 0.93 over 9 2/3 innings. Segovia, a 23-year-old right-hander, left the team in order to get married in Mexico.
The National League Golden Glove winners were announced on Friday. No Phillies were among the recipients.
Gio Gonzalez pitched three scoreless innings and
struck out three Thursday for the Saguaros of the AFL. Including his start in the Rising Stars game, Gonzalez has allowed three earned runs in 10 1/3 innings.
Gavin Floyd started Saturday against Scottsdale and allowed just one hit over four scoreless innings. Floyd's ERA is 6.35, but take away a disastrous outing on October 16th and it drops to 0.93.
OF Chris Roberson, who played in 57 games for the Phillies in 2006, is struggling as the starting center fielder for the Naranjeros de Hermosillo. As of Friday, the 27-year-old is hitting just .155 (11-for-71) with one home run and six RBI.
2B Danny Sandoval: Sandoval, who appeared in 28 games for the Phillies in 2006, is hitting .237 (14-for-59) with a home run and four RBI for the Pastora de los Llanos.
C Jason Jaramillo went 0-for-1 with a walk in the Rising Stars Showcase, but also logged time for the Saguaros as well. He collected five hits in 15 at-bats to raise his average to
.311.
The Tug McGraw Foundation, a national organization that supports research to improve the quality of life for brain tumor patients and their families, sold out its second annual fund-raiser, "An Evening with Tim McGraw and Friends: Honoring Those Who Make a Difference," within days. The event was held on Friday.
David Dellucci is the seventh of nine eligible Phillies to file, with Randall Simon and Alex Gonzalez, who retired in May, remaining. Randy Wolf, Mike Lieberthal, Aaron Fultz, Rick White, and Arthur Rhodes filed on Saturday, and Jose Hernandez filed on October 31st.
As far as the Phillies free agents are concerned, David Dellucci, Mike Lieberthal, and Aaron Fultz all have A rankings. Arthur Rhodes has a B ranking, and Randy Wolf, Rick White, amd Jose Hernandez have a C ranking.

The Phillies are said to be interested in Miguel Batista, a 35-year-old righthander who went 11-8 in 33 starts with the Diamondbacks last season after pitching exclusively in relief for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2005.

Ryan Howard had two home runs on Friday as Major League Baseball outslugged Nippon Professional Baseball, 8-6, to take a 2-0 lead in the five-game series. He is 7-for-10 with three homers in three games after hitting a three run shot Sunday..
Seventy women were chosen from a pool of more than 300 applicants to try out at Citizens Bank Park on Saturday for a chance to be a Phillies ballgirl in 2007. Ground balls, batting practice, and a written test were all part of the process PHILLIES DID YOU KNOW? Phillies 1983 World Series Run The Weeze Kids won 11 in a row in mid-September to run away with the Eastern Division, and crushed the favored Dodgers in a four-game NLCS. They won the first game of the World Series in Baltimore on an 8th-inning home run by Garry Maddox before losing four straight to the Orioles. Achievements: John Denny won the Cy Young Award for his 19-6 season. Mike Schmidt was home run champion with 40 and won a Gold Glove. Steve Carlton finished only 15-16 but won his 300th career game in September. Al Holland finished second in the league with 25 saves. Other career milestones include 2B Joe Morgan's 2500th hit and 250th home run, Schmidt's 350th home run, 1000th run, and 1000th RBI, and Rose's 2000th run. THE HOWARD MVP WATCH - Week 7 Ryan Howard was named the 2006 Player of the Year, as well as the top National League first baseman by his peers in the annual survey taken by The Sporting News. The Express beat out St. Louis' 1B Albert Pujols in both categories. Hopefully, the award will serve as a prelude to the National League's Most Valuable Player Award to be announced at the end of the month.
CORY LIDLE DIES IN PLANE CRASH Former Phillies pitcher Cory Lidle died in an airplane accident in New York City on Wednesday afternoon when a plane he was piloting crashed into a 50-story building on
the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Reports indicated that the plane took off from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey around 2:30 p.m. ET, crashing into the building roughly 15 minutes later. Lidle, a right-hander, was traded to the Yankees July 30th. He went 8-7 with a 4.63 ERA in 21 games for the Phillies.
UTLEY NAMED TOP 2B IN TSN POLE Phillies 2B Chase Utley was named to The Sporting News' All-Star team, which is voted on by his peers. Utley finished the year with a .309 batting average, 32 home runs, and 102 RBI. He was a starter on this year's All-Star team. He finished second in the National League in hitting and established himself as one of the premier second baseman in major league baseball. Utley enters his first arbitration eligible post-season this
year.
GOODBYE JOHNNY Johnny Callison, a three-time All-Star outfielder with the Phillies, died Thursday night following a long illness. He was 67 years of age. Callison played for the Phillies from 1960 through the 1969 season. In 1,886 career games, Callison batted .264 with 321 doubles, 89 triples, 226 homers and 840 RBI. He also had 926 runs scored. He was the first and only Phillies player to win the MVP Award in an All-Star Game following his dramatic, three- run homer with two out in the bottom of the ninth that gave the NL Stars a 7-4 win at Shea Stadium in 1964.
NUNEZ'S FUTURE UNCERTAIN Though
Abraham Núñez had a decent second half in 2006, third base will be one of the potential upgrades for Pat Gillick in the off- season. Núñez is a nine-year veteran with a career BA of .244. He played 630 games with the Pirates from 1996-2004. He joined the St. Louis Cardinals in 2005, and replaced Scott Rolen near the end of the season. He was signed to a two year contract by the Phillies. Núñez is a switch hitter with little power. Núñez batted .211 with an .576 OPS. He did play an excellent third base.
The Phillies compiled a 5.48 ERA in April and June (their two worst months) while going 19-32. In their two best months (May and September), pitchers had a 3.84 ERA and the team went 35-21.
Former Phillies INF Placido Polanco was named ALCS MVP.
The Phillies unveiled a historic marker in Yeadon, Pa., on Saturday to commemorate the exploits of the 1925 Negro League World Series champion Darby Hilldales. There were more than 500 in attendance, including four former Philadelphia Stars.
With 58 home runs this season, Ryan Howard posted the second-biggest one-season home-run jump in history for players who had at least 100 at-bats in each season. Howard's home runs increased by 36 from his total of 22 in 2005. Davey Johnson had the biggest jump, increasing his output by 38, from five in 1972 to 43 in 1973.
But Burrell has 61 homers and 212 RBIs the last two seasons (32 and 117 in 2005; 29 and 95 this year).
1B Ryan Howard and 2B Chase Utley are among the major-leaguers headed for Japan to play the Nippon all-stars in a best-of-five series from Nov. 3-8. Bullpen coach Ramon Henderson will be one of the coaches.
The Phillies recently held their annual organizational meeting in Clearwater, Fla., and they were believed to have interviewed several coaching candidates, including former Astros and Mets manager Art Howe.
John Russell, who managed the Phillies' AAA team to a first-place finish in 2006, also remains a coaching candidate.
Former Phillies 2B Juan Samuel told the Wilmington (Del.) News Journal that he doesn't expect to be named to the Phillies'
coaching staff in 2007. Samuel is seeking a multiyear contract, and the Phillies are reluctant to give coaches more than one season because manager Charlie Manuel's contract expires after next season.
A memorial service for Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle will be held on Tuesday in his hometown of Covina, California. The service is to start at 9 a.m. PT at Forest Lawn of Covina. In lieu of flowers, Lidle's family requested that donations be made to Tyler Stanger's family.
Former Phillies pitcher Adam Bernero has elected to become a free agent after the Royals outrighted him to Triple-A Omaha.
Cory Lidle went 26-20 for the Phillies after being traded to the team on August 9th, 2004.
The Phillies will prioritize finding a third baseman, a catcher, a setup man for closer Tom Gordon, a starting pitcher, and a big bat to hit behind Ryan Howard.
Phillies free agents: OF David Dellucci, LHP Randy Wolf, LHP Jamie Moyer, C Mike Lieberthal, INF
Jose Hernandez, LHP Aaron Fultz, LHP Arthur Rhodes, RHP Rick White.
RHP Scott Mathieson (reconstructive right elbow surgery) is expected to miss all or most of the 2007 season. PHILLIES DID YOU KNOW? In 1975 Garry Maddox was dealt to the Phillies for Willie Montanez. Maddox won the first of eight straight Gold Gloves that year. Only Roberto Clemente and Willie Mays won more in the OF. His 10th-inning, game-winning double in Game Five of the 1980 LCS put the Phillies in the World Series for the first time since 1950. PHILLIES NEWS:
PHILLIES TRADE CORMIER The Phillies traded LHP Rheal Cormier to the Cincinnati Reds for 23 year old RHP Justin Germano. Comier, 39, ends a Phillies run that began in 2001 and included a career-best season in 2003. He was having a fine 2006 season, compiling a 1.59 ERA in 43 games. Cormier's 14 big-league seasons have included stints with the Red Sox, Cardinals, Expos, Boston again, and the Phillies. Earlier this week, Cormier gave his approval for a deal with the Cardinals, but it fell apart.
PHILLIES ACQUIRE GERMANO The Phillies acquired RHP Justin Germano from the Cincinnati Reds last Monday. Germano. 23, appeared in two games with one start this season for Cincinnati, going 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA. He spent the majority of the season with AAA Louisville, where he was 8-6 with a 3.69 ERA in 19 games. Germano was ranked as San Diego's 7th best prospect by Baseball America prior to the 2005 season. He was dealt to the Reds later that season.
PHILLIES CALL UP SANCHES The Phillies called-up RHP Brian Sanches from Scranton/Wilkes- Barre. A former starting pitcher, he has been almost exclusively a reliever since the Phillies traded for him, and for the most part has
posted good numbers. He was originally called up by the Phillies in early June, and did a respectable job before returning to the Red Barons. In his first game back with the team though, Sanches was less than respectable as he allowed two walks and three earned runs in the eighth inning against the Marlins on Monday. He has improved on that performance since then.
UTLEY IS NL PLAYER OF THE MONTH: STREAK ENDS Phillies 2B Chase Utley was named the NL Player of the Month for July. Although Utley's hitting streak has garnered the most attention, his success went deeper than that. In the 25 games the Phillies played in July, Utley recorded multi-hit games in 17 of them. Utley's average has gone from .298 to among the league leaders at .327. Earlier in the week, he was named co- winner of the Bank of America Presents the NL Player of the Week Award, along with Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran. Utley's hitting streak ended at 35 games on Friday in New York.
MADSON BACK TO THE PEN With Randy Wolf's return to the starting rotation, the Phillies have, once again, moved RHP Ryan Madson back to the bull pen. Primarily a reliever during his major league career, 2006 was to be Madson's first full season as a starter. Madson has pitched in 23 games, with 17 of them in as a starter, and has compiled a team-leading nine wins and a 6.02 ERA. Mainly employing a fastball and a changeup, he worked seven or more innings only four times this year. Madson will pitch the 7th or 8th innings and serve as a bridge to closer Tom
Gordon.
MANUEL WATCH So many of you have written in asking for this. Well, here we go again. We all know that the Phillies can do considerably better by upgrading in the dugout. We all know that a manager's job is to bring all his talent together. Of course, we all know that this did not happen in Philadelphia. Make all the excuses you want. Charlie didn't get the job done and there are so few who think he can. Credit Pat Gillick with being a nice guy. Now, let's get down to business and finish the house-cleaning. Charlie has to go. The watch begins.

After Monday's game, the Phillies recalled OF Chris Roberson and sent OF Michael Bourn to AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The top three spots in the Phillies' order have contributed 57 of the Phillies' 60 stolen bases this season.
Major League Baseball suspended Phillies minor leaguer Jesus Granado 50 games for violation of Major League Baseball's Venezuelan Summer League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
Chase Utley, who hit in every game in July, is only the fourth player in the last 20 years to hit in every game in a month. The others are fellow Phillie Rollins last September, Shawn Green of the Blue Jays (July 1999), and Albert
Belle of the White Sox (May 1999).
Scott Mathieson recorded the first victory of his career after allowing three runs in five innings Tuesday against the Cardinals.
Chris Coste homered in a second straight game Tuesday against the Cardinals.
The Phillies sweep of the Cardinals was sweet revenge. St. Louis swept the Phillies in the first three games of the season in Philadelphia earlier this season.
Jimmy Rollins has two career multihomer games, both this year. One happened on August 2nd against St. Louis. The other was June 13th against the Mets.
The Phillies are the only unbeaten NL team when leading after eight innings, going 46-0.
Cole Hamels limited the Cardinals to one run and struck out 12 in seven innings to win on Thursday night. Hamels has 44 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings in his last five starts,
Randy Wolf took a no-decision against the Mets on Friday after lasting just four innings and yielding three runs on
seven hits. Wolf struck out four and topped out at 90 MPH in the outing, but he also walked three and gave up seven hits.
RF David Dellucci is batting .333 with nine homers in 156 at-bats.
Phillies RHP Jon Lieber has won once in nine starts since May 13th. He pitched a complete game in Saturday's loss to the Mets. He gave up four runs, one earned, in eight innings.
Ryan Howard went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and a walk Saturday against the Mets. Howard's 38th homer gave the Phillies their only runs of the game. The big game pushed Howard's OPS over 1.000 for the first time since April.
Going into Sunday's game, Abraham Nunez had a .162 batting average, with a .220 on-base-percentage, a .223 slugging percentage, and 8 RBI in 148 at-bats.
Chase Utley's spikes from Friday night's game are going to the Hall of Fame.
The Phillies have to decide what to do with RHP Ryan Franklin. If they can't trade him by Monday, he will
become a free agent.
If the Phillies don't bring Charlie Manuel back next season, speculation on a new managerial candidate currently centers around Lou Pinella who managed for Pat Gillick in Seattle.
The Phillies went into the weekend 2 1/2 games out in the NL Wild Card race.
Ryan Howard has four home runs against the Mets this year.
Chase Utley batted 62-for-158 during his hitting streak.
PHILLIES DID YOU KNOW? Shibe Park Facts: The first concrete-and-steel stadium in the majors, it was completed in less than one year. City block on which the ballpark was built measured 520 feet along 21st and 20th Streets; 481 feet, 3 inches along Lehigh Avenue and Somerset Street. Named for Ben Shibe, an Athletics stockholder and baseball manufacturer. Renamed Connie Mack Stadium in 1953. Upper-deck and left field stands added in 1925. Mezzanine added in 1929. Before 1935, 20th Street residents could see games
for free over the 12-foot right-field fence & fans could see the laundry lines on the roofs of 20th Street houses. Connie Mack lost a lawsuit to prevent this, so he built the high right-field 'spite' fence. Site of the 1952 and 1943 All-Star games. Old Yankee Stadium score board installed in front of the right-center wall in 1956. In 1956 the normal backstop screen was replaced with see-through Plexiglas. The last game was played on October 1, 1970. Home plate was moved to Veterans Stadium in 1971. Damaged by fire on August 20, 1971. Torn down in June 1976, while the All-star game was being played at Veterans Stadium. Now the site of the Deliverance Evangelistic Church. PHILLIES NEWS:
ABREU TRADED TO NEW YORK The Phillies traded
RF Bobby Abreu to the Yankees on Sunday. In return, the Phillies will get four minor leaguers: Class shortstop C.J. Henry, the Yankees' first pick in the 2005 draft, Class AAA left-hander Matt Smith, 27, and catcher Jesus Sanchez, 18, and right-hander Carlos Monasterios, 20, both of whom are with the Yankees' rookie ball affiliate in the Class A Gulf Coast League. Abreu is hitting .277 with 8 home runs and 65 RBI in 99 games. He has a career batting average of .301 with 198 home runs and 841 RBI over 10 seasons.
LIDLE ALSO NEW YORK BOUND The Phillies also included RHP Cory Lidle in the trade that send Bobby Abreu to the New York Yankees. Lidle, a right-hander, is 8-7 with a 4.74 ERA in 21 starts in 2006. In eight seasons he has a career mark of 78-69 with a 4.54 ERA. Lidle
came to the Phillies in August of the 2004 season. He has struck out 98 batters this season with only 39 walks. He has given up 132 hits with 19 of them going for home runs. Lidle is a free agent at the end of the season.
PHILLIES TRADE BELL Phillies 3B David Bell, who was batting .361 in July, was dealt to the Brewers for Minor League reliever Wilfrido Laureano on Friday night. The 33-year-old Bell was in the final season of a four-year deal he signed in the winter of 2002. He's eligible for free agency after the season. Overall, he was batting .278 with six home runs and 34 RBIs in 91 games. Bell signed on with the Phillies in 2002. His play was hampered by back problems which limited his playing time during his almost four years with the
Phillies.
PHILLIES CALL UP SANDOVAL The Phillies called up INF Danny Sandoval from Scranton/Wilkes- Barre on Saturday. Signed as a free agent by in November, 2003, only to be taken by Colorado a month later in the Rule 5 draft. The Phillies gave the infielder his first major league start Saturday night against the Florida Marlins. Sandoval batted eighth and played SS in place of the injured Jimmy Rollins. Sandoval was hitting .256 with two homers and 39 RBIs in the minors. He replaced David Bell on the major league roster.
UTLEY ON FIRE Phillies 2B Chase Utley owns the longest hitting streak in the majors this season. Utley extending his hitting streak to a career-best 27 games on Thursday night, matching Billy Hamilton, who got that far in 1894. His next Phillies target was Ed Delahanty, who went 31 straight games in 1899, and finally Jimmy Rollins, who reached 38 games, 36 during the 2005 season, and the first two games of the 2006 season. On Sunday, the streak reached 30 as Utley doubled in his second at bat in the first game of the twin bill and homered in the second game to take it to 31, catching Delehanty.
PHILLIES TRADE FASANO Former Phillies catcher Sal, Fasano, who was designated for assignment on July 22nd, was traded to the New York Yankees last Wednesday for Minor League second baseman Hector Made. Fasano, 34, had hit .243 with four home runs and 10 RBIs in 50 games. He just came off the DL with left knee inflammation when he was designated. The Yankees have a strict policy on facial hair and hair length, so Fasano's trademark hair and mustache are gone.
TOUGH LUCK MYERS Phillies RHP Brett Myers took another loss against the Marlins on Friday despite yielding just one run in eight innings of work. Myers walked just one while striking out eight and yielding five hits. The right-hander is 6-5 despite posting a 3.57 ERA and 13 quality starts in 19 tries this season. He's given up just six runs in three outings since returning from the time he took off. The Phillies haven't been hitting for Myers and his manager isn't exactly making things easy for him. In his last two starts, Myers pitched into the ninth inning when it was easy to see
that he needed to be lifted.
HAMELS O.K. Cole Hamels was pitching in the eighth inning, with the Phillies holding a nine-run lead. Hamels couldn't come up with a hot grounder back through the box. The ball ricocheted off Hamels' left leg, just below the knee, and rolled past Ryan Howard at first base. Hamels left the game and headed to the trainer's room. X-rays were negative and revealed a contusion. He (3-5) allowed three runs and five hits, striking out seven in the longest start in his brief career. The Phillies went on to win the game 12-3.
FRANKLIN DESIGNATED Ryan Franklin was designated for
assignment before the first game of Sunday's double-header. Franklin had been a starter for his last three seasons in Seattle, coming to the Phillies with the understanding that he'd be doing the same, but it was not to be. He was 1-5 with a 4.58 ERA in 46 relief appearances, never once taking the mound for a start. The Phillies were forced to make a move with Randy Wolf being activated from the disabled list after missing over a year following Tommy John surgery. The Phillies have ten days to trade Franklin.
PHILLIES GO WITH COSTE Phillies reserve catcher Chris Coste went 2-for-3 and hit his first major league homer Wednesday against the Padres. Coste's homer came in his 50th at-bat. He's hitting .333 with 10 RBI in his bench role. He has also been solid behind the plate.
Coste had an excellent spring and should have made the club then. Coste, officially a rookie at 33, stayed hot with a two-run blast off John Smoltz in the fourth inning last Friday night to help the Phillies take the first game of the series from the Braves.
WOLF WATCH - WOLF RETURNS The Wolfman is back. Randy Wolf officially returned to the big leagues on Sunday, having not pitched there in better than a year. Wolf, a 16-game winner in 2003, tossed 5 hitless innings Tuesday for the Class A Lakewood Blue Claws in his final rehab start following. Wolf started the first game of Sunday's double- header for Phillies. He went 4 1/3 innings and was not part of the decision
Phillies Rookie Cole Hamels struck out a career-high 12 in 5 1-3 innings on Monday night. The
Phillies' rookie record for strikeouts in a game is held by Jack Sanford (13) in 1957.
The Phillies drew 1,609,239 fans through their first 48 games at Citizens Bank Park, an average of 33,526 per game. They drew 1,599,910 fans after their 48th game last season, an average of 33,331 per game.
The Phils promoted outfielder Greg Golson, their first-round pick in 2004, from single-A Lakewood to single-A Clearwater. Golson hit .219 with seven home runs, 31 RBIs, and 107 strikeouts in 388 at-bats for Lakewood.
Jimmy Rollins sat out Thursday's game due to a tight hamstring.
Mike Lieberthal went 2-for-4 and hit his first homer of the season Thursday against the Diamondbacks.
The phillies OF now consists of Pat Burrell, David Dellucci, Shane Victorino, Aaron Rowand and Michael Bourne.
Four - Gene Mauch in 1962, Danny Ozark in 1976, Jim Fregosi in 1993, and Larry Bowa in 2001.
