FEATURE STORY Last week Pat Gillick relieved the Phillies of about $22.6 million in salary by dealing Abreu, Lidle, Bell, and Cormier, as well as the $17 million owed to Abreu in 2008. Gillick also said that it's a stretch to think that the Phillies going to "be there in '07." With Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Brett Myers, and Jimmy Rollins, Gillick
can begin the rebuilding process, but it won't happen fast. GET THE FULL STORY

PHILLIES NEWS:
PHILLIES TRADE CORMIER The Phillies traded LHP Rheal Cormier to the Cincinnati Reds for 23 year old RHP Justin Germano. Comier, 39, ends a Phillies run that began in 2001 and included a career-best season in 2003. He was having a fine 2006 season, compiling a 1.59 ERA in 43 games. Cormier's 14 big-league seasons have included stints with the Red Sox, Cardinals, Expos, Boston again, and the Phillies. Earlier this week, Cormier gave his approval for a deal with the Cardinals, but it fell apart.
PHILLIES ACQUIRE GERMANO The Phillies acquired RHP Justin Germano from the Cincinnati Reds last Monday. Germano. 23, appeared in two games with one start this season for Cincinnati, going 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA. He spent the majority of the season with AAA Louisville, where he was 8-6 with a 3.69 ERA in 19 games. Germano was ranked as San Diego's 7th best prospect by Baseball America prior to the 2005 season. He was dealt to the Reds later that season.
PHILLIES CALL UP SANCHES The Phillies called-up RHP Brian Sanches from Scranton/Wilkes- Barre. A former starting pitcher, he has been almost exclusively a reliever since the Phillies traded for him, and for the most part has
posted good numbers. He was originally called up by the Phillies in early June, and did a respectable job before returning to the Red Barons. In his first game back with the team though, Sanches was less than respectable as he allowed two walks and three earned runs in the eighth inning against the Marlins on Monday. He has improved on that performance since then.
UTLEY IS NL PLAYER OF THE MONTH: STREAK ENDS Phillies 2B Chase Utley was named the NL Player of the Month for July. Although Utley's hitting streak has garnered the most attention, his success went deeper than that. In the 25 games the Phillies played in July, Utley recorded multi-hit games in 17 of them. Utley's average has gone from .298 to among the league leaders at .327. Earlier in the week, he was named co- winner of the Bank of America Presents the NL Player of the Week Award, along with Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran. Utley's hitting streak ended at 35 games on Friday in New York.
MADSON BACK TO THE PEN With Randy Wolf's return to the starting rotation, the Phillies have, once again, moved RHP Ryan Madson back to the bull pen. Primarily a reliever during his major league career, 2006 was to be Madson's first full season as a starter. Madson has pitched in 23 games, with 17 of them in as a starter, and has compiled a team-leading nine wins and a 6.02 ERA. Mainly employing a fastball and a changeup, he worked seven or more innings only four times this year. Madson will pitch the 7th or 8th innings and serve as a bridge to closer Tom
Gordon.
MANUEL WATCH So many of you have written in asking for this. Well, here we go again. We all know that the Phillies can do considerably better by upgrading in the dugout. We all know that a manager's job is to bring all his talent together. Of course, we all know that this did not happen in Philadelphia. Make all the excuses you want. Charlie didn't get the job done and there are so few who think he can. Credit Pat Gillick with being a nice guy. Now, let's get down to business and finish the house-cleaning. Charlie has to go. The watch begins.

After Monday's game, the Phillies recalled OF Chris Roberson and sent OF Michael Bourn to AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The top three spots in the Phillies' order have contributed 57 of the Phillies' 60 stolen bases this season.
Major League Baseball suspended Phillies minor leaguer Jesus Granado 50 games for violation of Major League Baseball's Venezuelan Summer League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
Chase Utley, who hit in every game in July, is only the fourth player in the last 20 years to hit in every game in a month. The others are fellow Phillie Rollins last September, Shawn Green of the Blue Jays (July 1999), and Albert
Belle of the White Sox (May 1999).
Scott Mathieson recorded the first victory of his career after allowing three runs in five innings Tuesday against the Cardinals.
Chris Coste homered in a second straight game Tuesday against the Cardinals.
The Phillies sweep of the Cardinals was sweet revenge. St. Louis swept the Phillies in the first three games of the season in Philadelphia earlier this season.
Jimmy Rollins has two career multihomer games, both this year. One happened on August 2nd against St. Louis. The other was June 13th against the Mets.
The Phillies are the only unbeaten NL team when leading after eight innings, going 46-0.
Cole Hamels limited the Cardinals to one run and struck out 12 in seven innings to win on Thursday night. Hamels has 44 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings in his last five starts,
Randy Wolf took a no-decision against the Mets on Friday after lasting just four innings and yielding three runs on
seven hits. Wolf struck out four and topped out at 90 MPH in the outing, but he also walked three and gave up seven hits.
RF David Dellucci is batting .333 with nine homers in 156 at-bats.
Phillies RHP Jon Lieber has won once in nine starts since May 13th. He pitched a complete game in Saturday's loss to the Mets. He gave up four runs, one earned, in eight innings.
Ryan Howard went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and a walk Saturday against the Mets. Howard's 38th homer gave the Phillies their only runs of the game. The big game pushed Howard's OPS over 1.000 for the first time since April.
Going into Sunday's game, Abraham Nunez had a .162 batting average, with a .220 on-base-percentage, a .223 slugging percentage, and 8 RBI in 148 at-bats.
Chase Utley's spikes from Friday night's game are going to the Hall of Fame.
The Phillies have to decide what to do with RHP Ryan Franklin. If they can't trade him by Monday, he will
become a free agent.
If the Phillies don't bring Charlie Manuel back next season, speculation on a new managerial candidate currently centers around Lou Pinella who managed for Pat Gillick in Seattle.
The Phillies went into the weekend 2 1/2 games out in the NL Wild Card race.
Ryan Howard has four home runs against the Mets this year.
Chase Utley batted 62-for-158 during his hitting streak.
PHILLIES DID YOU KNOW? Shibe Park Facts: The first concrete-and-steel stadium in the majors, it was completed in less than one year. City block on which the ballpark was built measured 520 feet along 21st and 20th Streets; 481 feet, 3 inches along Lehigh Avenue and Somerset Street. Named for Ben Shibe, an Athletics stockholder and baseball manufacturer. Renamed Connie Mack Stadium in 1953. Upper-deck and left field stands added in 1925. Mezzanine added in 1929. Before 1935, 20th Street residents could see games
for free over the 12-foot right-field fence & fans could see the laundry lines on the roofs of 20th Street houses. Connie Mack lost a lawsuit to prevent this, so he built the high right-field 'spite' fence. Site of the 1952 and 1943 All-Star games. Old Yankee Stadium score board installed in front of the right-center wall in 1956. In 1956 the normal backstop screen was replaced with see-through Plexiglas. The last game was played on October 1, 1970. Home plate was moved to Veterans Stadium in 1971. Damaged by fire on August 20, 1971. Torn down in June 1976, while the All-star game was being played at Veterans Stadium. Now the site of the Deliverance Evangelistic Church. PHILLIES NEWS:
ABREU TRADED TO NEW YORK The Phillies traded
RF Bobby Abreu to the Yankees on Sunday. In return, the Phillies will get four minor leaguers: Class shortstop C.J. Henry, the Yankees' first pick in the 2005 draft, Class AAA left-hander Matt Smith, 27, and catcher Jesus Sanchez, 18, and right-hander Carlos Monasterios, 20, both of whom are with the Yankees' rookie ball affiliate in the Class A Gulf Coast League. Abreu is hitting .277 with 8 home runs and 65 RBI in 99 games. He has a career batting average of .301 with 198 home runs and 841 RBI over 10 seasons.
LIDLE ALSO NEW YORK BOUND The Phillies also included RHP Cory Lidle in the trade that send Bobby Abreu to the New York Yankees. Lidle, a right-hander, is 8-7 with a 4.74 ERA in 21 starts in 2006. In eight seasons he has a career mark of 78-69 with a 4.54 ERA. Lidle
came to the Phillies in August of the 2004 season. He has struck out 98 batters this season with only 39 walks. He has given up 132 hits with 19 of them going for home runs. Lidle is a free agent at the end of the season.
PHILLIES TRADE BELL Phillies 3B David Bell, who was batting .361 in July, was dealt to the Brewers for Minor League reliever Wilfrido Laureano on Friday night. The 33-year-old Bell was in the final season of a four-year deal he signed in the winter of 2002. He's eligible for free agency after the season. Overall, he was batting .278 with six home runs and 34 RBIs in 91 games. Bell signed on with the Phillies in 2002. His play was hampered by back problems which limited his playing time during his almost four years with the
Phillies.
PHILLIES CALL UP SANDOVAL The Phillies called up INF Danny Sandoval from Scranton/Wilkes- Barre on Saturday. Signed as a free agent by in November, 2003, only to be taken by Colorado a month later in the Rule 5 draft. The Phillies gave the infielder his first major league start Saturday night against the Florida Marlins. Sandoval batted eighth and played SS in place of the injured Jimmy Rollins. Sandoval was hitting .256 with two homers and 39 RBIs in the minors. He replaced David Bell on the major league roster.
UTLEY ON FIRE Phillies 2B Chase Utley owns the longest hitting streak in the majors this season. Utley extending his hitting streak to a career-best 27 games on Thursday night, matching Billy Hamilton, who got that far in 1894. His next Phillies target was Ed Delahanty, who went 31 straight games in 1899, and finally Jimmy Rollins, who reached 38 games, 36 during the 2005 season, and the first two games of the 2006 season. On Sunday, the streak reached 30 as Utley doubled in his second at bat in the first game of the twin bill and homered in the second game to take it to 31, catching Delehanty.
PHILLIES TRADE FASANO Former Phillies catcher Sal, Fasano, who was designated for assignment on July 22nd, was traded to the New York Yankees last Wednesday for Minor League second baseman Hector Made. Fasano, 34, had hit .243 with four home runs and 10 RBIs in 50 games. He just came off the DL with left knee inflammation when he was designated. The Yankees have a strict policy on facial hair and hair length, so Fasano's trademark hair and mustache are gone.
TOUGH LUCK MYERS Phillies RHP Brett Myers took another loss against the Marlins on Friday despite yielding just one run in eight innings of work. Myers walked just one while striking out eight and yielding five hits. The right-hander is 6-5 despite posting a 3.57 ERA and 13 quality starts in 19 tries this season. He's given up just six runs in three outings since returning from the time he took off. The Phillies haven't been hitting for Myers and his manager isn't exactly making things easy for him. In his last two starts, Myers pitched into the ninth inning when it was easy to see
that he needed to be lifted.
HAMELS O.K. Cole Hamels was pitching in the eighth inning, with the Phillies holding a nine-run lead. Hamels couldn't come up with a hot grounder back through the box. The ball ricocheted off Hamels' left leg, just below the knee, and rolled past Ryan Howard at first base. Hamels left the game and headed to the trainer's room. X-rays were negative and revealed a contusion. He (3-5) allowed three runs and five hits, striking out seven in the longest start in his brief career. The Phillies went on to win the game 12-3.
FRANKLIN DESIGNATED Ryan Franklin was designated for
assignment before the first game of Sunday's double-header. Franklin had been a starter for his last three seasons in Seattle, coming to the Phillies with the understanding that he'd be doing the same, but it was not to be. He was 1-5 with a 4.58 ERA in 46 relief appearances, never once taking the mound for a start. The Phillies were forced to make a move with Randy Wolf being activated from the disabled list after missing over a year following Tommy John surgery. The Phillies have ten days to trade Franklin.
PHILLIES GO WITH COSTE Phillies reserve catcher Chris Coste went 2-for-3 and hit his first major league homer Wednesday against the Padres. Coste's homer came in his 50th at-bat. He's hitting .333 with 10 RBI in his bench role. He has also been solid behind the plate.
Coste had an excellent spring and should have made the club then. Coste, officially a rookie at 33, stayed hot with a two-run blast off John Smoltz in the fourth inning last Friday night to help the Phillies take the first game of the series from the Braves.
WOLF WATCH - WOLF RETURNS The Wolfman is back. Randy Wolf officially returned to the big leagues on Sunday, having not pitched there in better than a year. Wolf, a 16-game winner in 2003, tossed 5 hitless innings Tuesday for the Class A Lakewood Blue Claws in his final rehab start following. Wolf started the first game of Sunday's double- header for Phillies. He went 4 1/3 innings and was not part of the decision
Phillies Rookie Cole Hamels struck out a career-high 12 in 5 1-3 innings on Monday night. The
Phillies' rookie record for strikeouts in a game is held by Jack Sanford (13) in 1957.
The Phillies drew 1,609,239 fans through their first 48 games at Citizens Bank Park, an average of 33,526 per game. They drew 1,599,910 fans after their 48th game last season, an average of 33,331 per game.
The Phils promoted outfielder Greg Golson, their first-round pick in 2004, from single-A Lakewood to single-A Clearwater. Golson hit .219 with seven home runs, 31 RBIs, and 107 strikeouts in 388 at-bats for Lakewood.
Jimmy Rollins sat out Thursday's game due to a tight hamstring.
Mike Lieberthal went 2-for-4 and hit his first homer of the season Thursday against the Diamondbacks.
The phillies OF now consists of Pat Burrell, David Dellucci, Shane Victorino, Aaron Rowand and Michael Bourne.
Four - Gene Mauch in 1962, Danny Ozark in 1976, Jim Fregosi in 1993, and Larry Bowa in 2001.

"America's Patriot Email"..........WE GAIN STRENGTH...COURAGE AND CONFIDENCE BY EVERY EXPERIENCE IN WHICH WE REALLY STOP TO LOOK FEAR IN THE FACE....WHEN WE ARE ABLE TO SAY TO OURSELVES "WE LIVED THROUGH THE HORROR" WE CAN TAKE THE NEXT THING THAT COMES ALONG...STAND TALL...STAND PROUD..~TODAY IS FLAG DAY..Everyone is asked to wear the Red White and the Blue....~Finally I have attached an Email with a Commentary by a Canadian TV Broadcaster about the USA...A very nice thing from our close Friend - CANADA...PLEASE read this great commentary Listen to what an outside observer says about our GREAT COUNTRY...GOD BLESS THE USA....: America: The Good Neighbor.
Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television
commentator.
What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record:
"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth."
Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.
When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.
When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes.
Nobody
helped.
The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans.
I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them?
Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes?
Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles.
You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon- not once, but several times-and safely home again. You talk about scandals, and the
Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at.
Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.
When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose.
Both are still broke.
I can name you 5,000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.
Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They
will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those."
Stand proud, America!
This is one of the best editorials that I have ever read regarding the United States. It is nice that one man realizes it. I only wish that the rest of the world would realize it. We are seem to be blamed for everything, and don't get a thank you for the things we do. I would hope that each of you would send this to as many people as you can and emphasize that they should send it to as many of their friends until this letter is sent to every person on the web. I am just a single American that has read this, I
SURE HOPE THAT A LOT MORE READ
IT SOON.
Makes you proud to live here doesn't it??
OUTSTANDING!!! That's rthe Flag Day "Field of Dreams
Today"..Be Safe..Be Broud..And NEVER let go..."Sic Semper Tyrannis"....Let's Roll!!

Minor league baseball umpires voted Friday to authorize their first strike since forming a union in 2000 and said Triple-A members would not serve as fill-in major league umps until there is a contract.
The minor league umps, whose five-year labor deal expired in November, had previously voted not to work spring training games. The decision whether to strike will be made by the union's officers.
"Our goal all along has been to get a fair contract without a strike, and we still hope that we can get it done," said Andy Roberts, president of the Association of Minor League Umpires. "Our members have told us loud and clear, however, that they're prepared to strike if that's what it takes to get a fair contract."
The union represents
about 220 umpires in 16 leagues. Management and the union have not met since Jan. 31, when the Professional Baseball Umpire Corporation made what the union termed management's final offer.
Triple-A umpires regularly work major league games during the regular season, filling in for big league umps who are injured or on vacation.
"We have our regular crews. If somebody gets injured and they're unwilling to work, we'll find somebody willing to work," said Rob Manfred, Major League Baseball's executive vice president of labor relations.
Pat O'Conner, chief operating officer of minor league baseball's governing body, the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues, did not return a telephone call seeking comment.
Roberts, an umpire with the Triple-A International League, had said the average salary for minor league umpires has remained unchanged for a decade. It is about $15,000 at Triple-A, $12,000 at
Double-A, $10,000 in full-season A-ball and $5,500 in rookie leagues.
Umpires have asked for annual increases in a four-year contract. O'Conner has refused to comment publicly on negotiations.

FEATURE STORY Pat Gillick has made clear his priority to sign
closer Billy Wagner, but Gillick has to be looking at the other components of the team which will need attention, simultaneously. He says that with five or six more wins next year, the Phillies make the playoffs. Now, if David Montgomery and Phillies ownership provide the resources necessary for Gillick to be creative enough to help this team compete and win, then 2006 could be a very interesting year for the Phillies. PHILLIES NEWS:
GILLICK MEETS WITH WAGNER Pat Gillick, Ruben Amaro, and Charlie Manuel met with Billy Wagner and his agent on Wednesday. Wagner was reported to be enthusiastic about the meeting. The Phillies made no new offer, though Gillick told Bean Stringfellow, Wagner's agent, that they would be in touch over the weekend. The Phillies are sticking to a previous proposal that was believed to have been for three guaranteed seasons at $29 million to $31 million, an upgrade from an earlier offer of three years and $24 million.
RUIZ LOOKING GOOD An intriguing name in the Phillies not so distant future is catcher Carlos Ruiz, who has continued his hot second half hitting at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with a
fine start in winter ball for Licey. Ruiz is hitting. 323 through 31 at-bats, and could wind up as the Phillies backup catcher next season. The Phillies always knew he was an excellent defensive catcher but last season they saw an offensive display that they hadn't seen from him in years past. His emergence could send veteran catcherTodd Pratt packing.
THOME LOOKING BETTER? Phillies first baseman Jim Thome has been in Clearwater, working out as he attempts to come back from elbow surgery that ended his season. The Phillies report that Thome is in great shape and should be at 100% for the start of spring training. Thome suffered from back problems last season before he had season-ending right- elbow surgery in July. Twins general manager Terry Ryan said he wouldn't consider dealing
for Jim Thome until seeing him healthy and swinging the bat well in spring training, but he's still interested. There are reports that other general managers are also interested. It's good news for the Phillies who need to clear the way for Rookie of the Year Ryan Howard. Thome would like to go to a midwestern team, preferably in the American League.
PHILLIES ADD BOURN TO 40 MAN ROSTER The Phillies purchased the contract of OF Michael Bourn, the team's 4th round pick in June 2003 draft. Bourn, 23, also is the burner that management loves. He runs a 6.32 sixty. Last year he hit .268 with 38 stolen bases. Bourn is batting over .300 in winter ball and should be with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season. Baseball America named Bourn the most exciting player in the Eastern League. The
Phillies needed to make the move to protect him for the next Rule V draft.
PHILLIES ADD MATHIESON TO 40 MAN ROSTER The Phillies also added Clearwater RHP Scott Mathieson to the 40 man roster. Mathieson is one of eight Phillies playing winter ball. He went 3-8, with a 4.14 ERA in 23 starts (121.2 innings) last season. Mathieson struck out 68 batters, while walking just 20. Opposing batters hit .220 against him. He pitched well enough to see action with AA Reading next season. He was the team's 17th-round pick in 2002. The Phillies needed to make the move to protect him for the next Rule V draft.
GOODBYE KENNY
Reports are that the Phillies have chosen not to sign veteran OF Kenny Lofton for next season. Lofton split time in CF with Jason Michaels last season. In 110 games, Lofton batted .335. He had 41 strikeouts and 32 walks. He was instrumental in the continued development of SS Jimmy Rollins, whose franchise record 35 game hitting streak will continue into next season. Lofton's departure clears the way for the Phillies to give Shane Victorino a shot at center field.
URBINA CHARGED Free agent relief pitcher Ugueth Urbina was formally charged with attempted murder on Wednesday, and will remain in prison while he is tried, his lawyer said. Urbina, who most recently pitched for the Phillies before becoming a free agent, was taken to a detention center in Los Teques, just west of
Caracas. He has not spoken to reporters yet. As far as Urbina's baseball career is concerned, his lawyer says that all will depend on the way in which he is brought before justice.
HOWARD WATCH As new general manager Pat Gillick continues to appraise his new organization, there is no word where Ryan Howard will be playing next season. Trading Howard might put Gillick's head on the block in Philadelphia, literally. As he waits, the Express spent time talking to about 200 students last Wednesday morning at Russell H. Conwell Middle School. The event is part of Coca-Cola's Philadelphia Live It! program. It's good to see Howard taking part and having a positive impact on the lives of young people.

Jim Thome, Bobby Abreu,

The Yankees are considering letting free agent John Flaherty go and signing Todd Pratt as Jorge Posada's backup.
The Phillies learned in a recent discussion with the Arizona Diamondbacks that righthander Javier Vazquez, who has requested a trade to be closer to his family on the East Coast, has a list of six teams he won't play for. The Phillies are reported to be one of them.
Jake Blalock is being left available for the Rule V draft. The Phillies chose not to protect him. Blalock in currently with Clearwater.

The Mets are expected to offer as much as $30 million over three years, and could add a fourth year to land Phillies closer Billy Wagner.
The Washington Nationals have signed former Phillies utility man Marlon Anderson to a two-year contract.

PHILLIES: DID YOU KNOW? A rare distinction in baseball is to hit four home runs in one game. There are only fifteen times that this has happened. The Phillies have had three batters with four home runs in a game, this is more than any other team, past or present. Ed Delahanty accomplished this feat on July 13, 1896 and holds the distinction of being the only person to ever hit four inside the park home runs in a single game. Chuck Klein hit his on July 10, 1936 and Mike Schmidt hit his on April 17, 1976. PHILLIES NEWS:
LIDLE TO THE 15 DAY DL
Phillies placed RHP Cory Lidle on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique. Lidle had to leave a game against the Giants on August 25th with a strained left oblique muscle. He hurt himself on the swing before he grounded out. Lidle was replaced in the rotation by RHP Robinson Tejeda. In the first half of the season,
Lidle was one of the more consistent Phillies starters.
THOME TO THE 60 DAY DL
Phillies 1B Jim Thome was moved from the 15 day disabled list to the 60 day DL. Thome hasn't been healthy since the middle of last season. He opened this season with a
back problem which landed him on the DL for the first time
in May. He returned to active play, only to return to the disabled list in early July with elbow tendinitis. He had surgery in August and is expected to be out of action for three months. The Phillies are said to be actively shopping Thome and are reportedly willing to pay half of his remaining salary.
VICTORINO'S IN THE MIX
The Phillies picked up AAA outfielder Shane Victorino from The Dodgers in last year's Rule V draft. It now
looks like this year's minor league diamond in the rough
could dramatically alter the Phillies CF plans for 2006.
Victorino, fresh from being named the International
League Player of the Year on Tuesday, is now with the big
club for September play. He hit .310, with a career-high 18 homers, including a team-record 13. He also reached career highs with 70 RBI, 25 doubles, and 16 triples. He was riding a 22-game hitting streak when he was called up as rosters expanded on Thursday.
MYERS COULD BE ACE MATERIAL
After a difficult outing that saw Phillies RHP Brett Myers
reverting to his old mental form, the Phillies young starter
came back with the kind of game that aces are made of as he convincingly beat the Mets and ace Pedro Martinez at Shea on Thursday. Myers did all the little things that aces to and kept his head in the game after the Mets touched him for two runs early. Myers is currently 12-6 with a 3.51 ERA.
WAGNER; PHILLIES STILL NOT CLOSE
Phillies closer Billy Wagner and the Phillies are still negotiating. That's good. They're still far apart. That's not good. It's believed Wagner is looking for $27 million over three seasons, while the Phillies' top offer is a two-year, $14 million deal with an $8.5 million option. Wagner is now saying he'll accept a full no-trade clause over the first two seasons and a limited no-trade in the third season. The Phillies' latest offer includes a full no-trade for 2006, a limited no-trade for 2007, and nothing for 2008.
MICHAELS SOLID IN SHARED ROLE
Jason Michaels continues to impress for the Phillies. The four year CF has played in 89 games for the Phillies.
He has a .309 batting average to go with a .404 on-base-
percentage and a .413 slugging percentage. Michaels
has 3 home runs this season and 26 RBI. Michaels has
been sharing playing time with Kenny Lofton. He bats
against the right handed pitchers, with Lofton playing against the lefties.
TEJEDA MISSES START
The Phillies announced that rookie righthander Robinson Tejeda, who has pitched remarkably well since he joined the rotation in June, would miss his next scheduled start against the Washington Nationals at RFK Stadium because of inflammation in his right shoulder. Tejeda said he first felt discomfort in his shoulder August 24th in San Francisco, when he pitched two innings in relief of Cory Lidle. Tejeda felt pain again Tuesday in New York, and again Thursday when he threw a bullpen session. He threw just 10 pitches and had to stop. Tejeda was replaced in the rotation by rookie Eude Brito.
FLOYD RETURNS TO PHILLIES
Gavin Floyd pitched for the Phillies for the first time since he was demoted in April. Floyd gave the Phillies six effective innings in his first start in the Majors since April 15th, but the Nationals used a pair of three-run home runs to earn a 6-1 victory at RFK Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Floyd struggled at AAA Scranton Wilkes-Barre, going 3-6 with a 6.28 ERA in 17 starts. He regained his focus, his fastball,
and his curve in two sessions with part-time assistant Johnny Podres in July.
HOWARD WATCH
Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard, finishing the season in place of injured lineup anchor Jim Thome, has begun
to step up the pace as the Phillies make a run for a playoff spot in the National League. The Express looks right at home in the spotlight. He smashed his third home run in four games on Thursday, a ninth-inning bomb
that gave the Phillies their two-run lead. He hit one Pedro off Martinez on Wednesday, too, two games after he crushed one more than 425 feet off the centerfield wall in Arizona. In that game ESPN commentator was
comparing Howard to former Giant great Willie McCovey.
Howard went yard again on Saturday with an opposite
field shot against Washington.
WADE WATCH - Week 37
Ed Wade's contract with the Phillies is now guaranteed through 2007 instead of 2006. Wade he had a clause in his contract that automatically kicked in another year on an unspecified date during the season. Some baseball
people were making comparisons between the circumstances
surrounding Jim Thome and those that befell Lenny Dykstra.
Dykstra's career was ended as a result of s chronic back
problem. To this, Wade said, "The circumstances here are different than Dykstra-Glanville. We knew that Lenny, at that point, was at the end of his career. I don't see Jim at the end." This is what scares Phillies fans when
it comes to Wade. Hey Ed. Do we have to wait for the end,
or wouldn't it be a good idea to move Thome while he still
has enough left to be worth something. Ah, Ed? IT'S WHAT
THE WINNING ORGANIZATIONS DO!
SEPTEMBER CALL-UPS
Five players, including outfielder Shane Victorino, the International League most valuable player, joined the Phils as rosters expanded to 40 yesterday. Utility man Matt Kata, catcher A.J. Hinch and pitchers Geoff Geary and Pedro Liriano also arrived. Pitcher Gavin Floyd will join the club Sonday, after his final start with AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Fans attending National League games during the 10-game homestand at Citizens Bank Park will have the opportunity to team with the Phillies, Citizens Bank and the American Red Cross to raise dollars for Hurricane Katrina victims.
The homestand, which includes pennant-race games against the Houston Astros, Florida Marlins and Atlanta Braves, begins on Monday, September 5th, and concludes on Thursday, September 15th. Donations for the American Red Cross National Disaster Relief Fund will be accepted at specially designated locations inside the First Base, Third Base and Left Field Gates at Citizens Bank Park when the gates open (1 ½ hours prior to game time during the week; 2 hours before Saturday
and Sunday games).
VICTORINO IS IL MVP - From The Red Barons
For the first time ever, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons can claim the IL's Most Valuable Player. Outfielder Shane Victorino has won the award on the heels of his best season as a professional, setting career highs in nearly every offensive category. Victorino put together an incredible season in 2005. After his average dipped to .243 on June 22nd, he put together five straight multiple-hit games, sparking the 24-year-old to a torrid second half. He currently enjoys a 22-game hitting streak, second longest of the season in the IL (former teammate Ryan Howard, 24). Known for his defensive skills in center field, Victorino is among the League leaders in several offensive categories, including 8th in batting average (.310), 3rd in hits (153), 3rd in slugging percentage (.534), T-1st in extra-base hits (59), 1st in runs scored (93), and 1st in triples (16). His 16 triples is two more than any other player has collected this season in all of professional baseball. The Wailuku, Hawaii native has twice been named the IL Batter-of-the-Week this season (July 25-31, August 8-14).
READING PHILLIES' RUIZ HEADS FOR HOLLAND - From The Reading Phillies
Randy Ruiz has left the Reading Phillies lineup once again, this time to head for Holland, where he will take part in the World Cup tournament, which begins Friday. The 27-year-old Ruiz was born and raised in New York, but his family heritage allows him to represent Puerto Rico in international competition. Ruiz is leading the Eastern League with a .349 batting average in 89 games. He has 385 plate appearances, which should, unofficially, be enough to qualify for the batting title. Ruiz is also leading the league in slugging percentage at .669. Ruiz has missed 45 games this season due to two suspensions after twice testing positive for a banned substance. He is one of three Reading players headed to the World Cup. Pitcher Greg Bauer is going to represent the United States, and pitcher Josue Matos is going to represent Puerto Rico. Two pitchers were added to the Reading roster to take their places: Travis Minix returned from AAA and Matt Sweeney was added from Single-A Clearwater.

Double A outfielder Chris Roberson broke the Reading Phillies hits record set in 1987 by Tommy Barrett.
LF Pat Burrell has hit 29 career homers against the Mets, including a two-run blast in the series opener on Tuesday, with 15 of those at Shea Stadium.
The Phillies finished August with a 16-11 record. They have a winning record for four straight months for the first time since September of 1992 and April, May and June of 1993 (excluding March and October).
The Phils needed to clear room on their 40-man roster for Shane Victorino and A.J. Hinch. They did so by designating pitcher Clay Condrey and third baseman Juan Richardson for assignment.
Hitting coach Milt Thompson was ejected for getting on home-plate umpire Larry Young after Ryan Howard was ruled out on a liner to right in the seventh inning of the Phillies' 3-1 win. Replays showed the ball had been trapped by outfielder Victor Diaz.
Courtesy of Hurricane Katrina, a river now flows in Phillies pitcher Jon Lieber's back yard in Mobile, Ala.
Reliever Aaron Fultz also resides in Alabama, but a few hours north of the Gulf of Mexico in Fayette, where damage was minimal.
The Phillies game at Florida on Sunday, September 18th, has been selected as an ESPN Sunday Night national telecast. Game time is 8:09 p.m. This the fourth ESPN Sunday night game for the Phillies this season.
David Bell hit the first grand slam of his career against the Nationals on Friday night.
Phillies players and coaches visited the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., this week. They signed autographs and took pictures with patients.
Lefthanded reliever Rheal Cormier has inflammation in his left shoulder.
PHILLIES: DID YOU KNOW?
Named for a verbal shorthand of the city of residence the Phillies replaced the Worcester (Massachusetts) Brown Stockings in the National League. However, the team was not relocated, the Worcesters were expelled from the league, and the new Phillies were given their spot. The name has nothing to do with horses. Their initial owners were John Rodgers and Al Reach, the first ever professional baseball player according to many definitions and he was the man to give the Phillies their name.

"America's Baseball Email"..... BASEBALL...PART OF AMERICA..PART OF OUR LIVES... ~ WELCOME To the Saturday "Field of Dreams Today"..Today I am running the article from the very First Minor League Baseball Association Magazine...I am a proud lifetime member and wanted to share this with you..It was written only days after 9/11/2001.....
What Baseball Means to Me by Alumni Member John Graham
MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SEPT 25,2001- My life took shape in the Summer of 1966 at a place called Peninsula War Memorial Stadium in Hampton,Virginia. I was six and my mom and dad took me to my first pro baseball game. We had season tickets to the Peninsula Grays, a Cincinnati Reds affliate in the Carolina League, that included a rookie catcher named Johnny Bench. I know my future was shaped that year. During the next 11 seasons my family and I missed few home games and in March of 1977 I got my courage up to ask the
General Manager, Bob Neal, for a job. My first baseball job- scoreboard operator, 5 bucks a game. Later that year I moved up to PA Announcer and we won the Carolina League Championship. My first year and a championship ring. I knew that Baseball is what I wanted to do. I spent the next 15 years in the Carolina League and the New York Penn League. My major league teams were the Phillies,White Sox and Astros. I later took over from my mentor and lifelong friend Bob Neal at both Peninsula and Auburn,NY when he retired from baseball. Once at Peninsula and several years later he asked to join him in the Upstate New York area.1980 was the best season as far as excellence- Peninsula Pilots, a Phillies team,100 wins wins and just 40 losses. We won both the first and second half titles and a sweep of the legendary Durham Bulls 3-0 in the Championship Series. The .719 winning pct is still tops in the history of the Carolina League and one of the best
ever in Pro Baseball. Our field manager Bill Dancy remains a brother to me to this day. There are so many wonderful memories I carried away from the game. The best without a doubt, the People. The many great fans, players, coaches, managers, staff, and executives over the years. Each season was like adding folks to your family tree. I have been fortunate to stay in touch with many of these folks. I do a daily email letter to over 500 people, family and friends. To many to mention all but Carolina League President John Hopkins,My asst gm in Auburn Marc Techman, and the aforementioned Bill Dancy and Bob Neal are a few of the people that helped me the most and I thank them and everyone I ever worked with.I have also stayed active in the game as the Chairman of The Peninsula Pro Baseball Hall of Fame. Honoring 100 years of baseball excellence in the Hampton-Newport News area of Virginia. And while I don't work at it every day anymore it's always a
part of you. Just like your friends,family,church..Baseball is indeed a big part of my life. I should say Minor League Baseball..A field of Dreams like no other. It so unites our great Country and so many that now work or have worked in baseball.I learned so much about life in those years. About different parts of the country.People of all ethnic and religious backgrounds, customs and traditions. I would not trade those years for anything. At this difficult time in our Country,Minor league Baseball remains a constant, a good friend.May God Bless all of you and the United States of America!!
