FEATURE STORY
As the baseball world prepares for major league baseball's 2007 World
Series, the Phillies and 28 other organizations are beginning to define
the scope of their off-season plans. For the last two years, after just
missing a wild card birth, and with limited financial resources, it hasnot
been easy to attract much in the way of quality free agents, and though,
for the most part, Pat Gillick and Company did a reasonably good job, the
upgrades weren't significant. This year, things look a little bit
different.

THIS WEEK'S TRIVIA QUESTION Supporting the Philadelphia Chapter of the ALS
Association ***Do whatever you can***This Week's Question:I was born on
December 27, 1983, in San Diego, California.Lots of scouts were interested
in me while I was pitching inhigh school because my fastball was clocked
as high as 94 mph. However, I broke my arm in my junior year, so
manyteams lost interest. The Phillies did not and took a chance on me. I
made them look good. Who am I?Scroll down for the answer.

HOWARD NOMINATED AGAINPhillies 1B Ryan Howard has been nominated again,
this time for the Major League Baseball Clutch Performer of the Year
Award. Howard has been nominated along with J.J. Putz, Jake Peavy, Aramis
Ramirez, Alex Rodriguez, and Mark Teixeira for the award which is
presented by Pepsi. Despite a slow start, the Phillies slugger putup huge
numbers again following up on his fifty eight homer 2006 season. Howard
finished with 47 homers, and that included 11 during the Phillies crucial
September stretch run and one in each of their dramatic final four games
of the regular season. For more information about the Major League Baseball
Clutch Performer of the Year Award and to vote for Ryan Howard, go Here.

UTLEY IS SPORTING NEWS ALL-STARChase Utley has been recognized by MLB
players as a National League All-Star, as he was named to The Sporting
News' NL squad. Despite missing five weeks of the season, Utley batted
.332 with a franchise-best 48 doubles, 22 homers, and 103 RBI. He is a
two-time recipient, having also been named by the players in 2006.The
Sporting News released the results of votes submitted by 488 Major
Leaguerson Thursday. Utley was selected in the first round (15th overall)
by the Philliesin the 2000 first year player draft following his selection
as the Outstanding Player of the NCAA Regionals. He has arguably become
the top rated second baseman in major league baseball. Before his injury
this season, hs was considered one of the front-runners for the NL Most
Valuable Player award.

ROWAND IS SPORTING NEWS ALL-STARChase Utley has some company on the NL
All-Star squad. Phillies center-fielderAaron Rowand has also been
selected by his peers to The Sporting News' NL All-Star squad. Rowand, a
free agent, hit .309 with a career-high 27 homers, and 89 RBIs. Known as
a tough-nosed ball player, Rowand comes to play and givesan all-out effort
in every game. The Phillies and Rowand avoided an arbitration hearing
during last off-season and came to terms on a contract for 2007.
Rowandresponded with a career year and a trip to the NL All Star game. He
plays one ofthe better center fields in the game and will be difficult for
the Phillies to come toterms with. When the 2005 Chicago White Sox went
on to win the World Series, he was noted by manager Sox Ozzie Guillen as a
clubhouse leader and an example of the hustle expected from the team. He
played the same role in Philadelphia.

ROLLINS SLIGHTED AGAINThough he is one of the front-runners in the
National League Most Valuable Playersweepstakes, Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins
is having a difficult time getting respect fromothers in the business.
Rollins was not selected to the Sporting News' NL All-Star squad, losing
out to Florida's Hanley Ramirez, who batted .332 with 29 homers and51
stolen bases. Rollins set a record for at-bats in a season with 716, and
became the first player in baseball history to hit at least 30 doubles, 20
triples, 30 homers and 40 stolen bases in one season. He was clutch all
year for the Phillies and is finallyrecognized as one of the premier
lead-off hitters in the game today. In July, Cardinalsmanager Tony La
Russa left Rollins off the NL All-Star roster, though his numberssaid
otherwise. He is a strong contender for NL MVP honors, along with
Colorado's Matt Holliday.

MANUEL WATCH - WEEK 27Though Phillies manager Charlie Manuel took an
injury plagued team into the playoffsfor an organization that hadn't been
there for fourteen years, his peers elected to gowith padres manager Bob
Melvin when they cast their votes for the manager of theNL squad when The
Sporting News released the results of votes submitted by the488 Major
Leaguers. Manuel lost to Melvin by one vote from the eleven, that's
right, eleven NL managers who replied. Manuel and Melvin will probably
lock horns againat the end of the month when the results of the National
League Manager of the Year are announced after the world series ends.
Manuel completed his third season asPhillies manager and has just been
awarded a two year contract extension. We'll beconcluding our Manuel
Watch after the voting is in.

playoff-caliber team? That's a big thing for me, and the Phillies
obviously fit in there," Red Sox 3B Mike Lowell on possibly playing for
