Rumor has it somebody in town can do this?

If somebody could forward me hints, clues, GPS locations, email addresses or random digits representing phone numbers that would be great.

Thanks,

Thanks for sending this along Paula.

For those of you interested in participating in the Twilight series this August, here is some more information.  The attached forms can also be found on schweitzer.com.

They’ve changed the format a bit this year and it should be better than ever.  They have lots of great sponsors, great courses that will change each week, raffles, a series gift (last year it was a logo’d bike tool) and good times at the end of each race.

Hope to see you there.

Happy Trails,

Patrick

Anyone have GPS files or Google Earth paths of the local trails?  Particularly Syringa since there are so many different ones up there.

BTW here's a great link to all the local Forest Service trails and you can download the GPX files and drop them into Google Earth (etc) ...

Thanks.

Anybody interested is welcome to come along for a mountain bike ride at Priest Lake on Sunday, July 27th. We'll leave from the Federal Building on Hwy 2 at 9:30. Planning to ride the Lakeshore and Navigator trails on the west side of the lake, have a snack and maybe swim at Upper Priest Lake, and return the same trail. About 2 1/2 hours riding. If you haven't done it, this trail is suitable for any skill level.

At the end of the day, we'll hit one of the resorts on Priest Lake for a swim and food and drink on the deck before coming home.

If you can't make Sunday's group ride, check the website for 2 group ride offers on Saturday.

Remember when you were a kid out of school for the summer?
After dinner, you'd go outside in the cooling air and run around playing with the other kids.
Well, that's what our late-day road rides are like: playing with the other kids by running around.

Come ride with us!

The Monday night road ride group continues to grow. We had 9 riders
last night for the Bottle Bay loop. We also had the first women join
us this year; Julie Nye and Christina Fisher. We will be riding from
Sandpoint Sports next Monday evening, 28 July at 5:30. Come join us. A
great way to learn bike handling and pace line riding, plus meet other
road riders.

A group will meet this coming Saturday, 26 July, at 9 am at the Pend
Oreille winery to do a ride of about 40 miles. See you there.

I am planning to ride the route of the CHaFE 150 this coming Saturday (July 26).  Anyone interested?  Meet at the coldwater creek campus, park in the lot closest to hwy 200.  I am thinking of leaving at 6:00 am (it is a long ride and it is expected to be warm this weekend).

The route is out 200 to the junction of hwy 56, north on 56 to Troy then west to Bonners, Bonners back to CWTR.  Total distance is 148 miles.  For more info about the route, see the chafe website chafe150.org.  The ride is unsupported; however, there are many stores etc. along the route so buying food and drinks is not a problem.

There are a couple routes between Janish and Wood View, which takes you to Pine Street (or Baldy) – almost all on private property, with no official permission granted as far as I know.  One is from Chris White’s house, which goes out to a rock outcropping (great view) & down a windy, steep trail.  At the bottom there is a fork – left takes you to Wood View, and right takes you to the beaver ponds.  To get to Pine Street, you take the left, to Wood View, and then at the main road (where the trail comes out) you can go left to Baldy, or right, down the hill and then at the base of the downhill you have to cut left down the “connector”, then go right at the bottom to Pine Street Loop.  The connector has great whoopdees.

The other way to get from Janish to Pine Street is to cut in where there’s a little mini-subdivision (it’s closer to Baldy than Chris White’s trail; probably ½ mile from Baldy), and go through undeveloped lots for sale, down to Hidden Springs road, and cut in where there’s an orange flag.  That takes you either left or right.  Left – you go behind my neighbor’s house, then down their driveway onto Woodview (where my house is).  Right – you go behind the Federschpiel’s house (they only come here on winter weekends to ski) to Woodview, closer to the beaver ponds trailhead.  Both of these families are totally happy to have people using their trails.  I am also totally happy having pedalers come in and use the bathroom or fill up water or whatever, even if I’m not there.

As far as I know, other than those two trails, everything else is private property.  And – I have maintained a lot of these trails, and use them almost daily, and people don’t seem to mind.  There is a mama black bear with two cubs hanging out near the connector on Hidden Springs, so just give her a verbal warning and keep your ears perked before flying through there.

Thanks, you guys, for helping keep these trails clear.  They’ve grown in a lot this year.

I would still invite a crew to work on the trails I’ve cleared on my property, which would be great to ride.  Maybe we can work on permission from other neighbors also, since this is a great trail system.

Cheers

lizzy

There is no sanctioned singletrack trail between Janish Drive and Pine Street. However, if there were, it would now be rideable and free of obstacles.

Speaking of weekend rides, Andy Chapman lead a group up Baldy Mountain on Sunday.  Andy and Mel Dick did most of this ride last year and Andy wanted to do it again, but this time getting all the way to the top!
We started with coffee cake at his place on Johnny Long Rd (off Wrenco Loop) and then started our adventure around 9am.  It was more of an adventure for some of us than others as you'll soon learn.

The route up the mountain is all gravel roads.  The first half of the ride was on good roads.  Can’t say the same for the upper roads.  :(  A good test for your suspension components.
Along the way there are several vista points that give you clear views up and down the River.  The day was clear and the wildflowers and scenery simply amazing.  Andy and I stopped and took plenty of pictures.
Although the group got a little spread out on the ascent, everyone finally made it.  I ended up summiting three times, once with Andy (Stephen, Sandy and Collin had already been to the top).
When Andy and I headed down, guess who we encountered?  JoBeth.  You’ll have to ask her about her own adventure!  We were so close to the top when we ran into her, I told Andy to go ahead down and I’d accompany JoBeth to the top and take her picture, which I did.  You know, ya gotta have proof you made it!
When JoBeth and I headed down, we encountered Retish, a summer intern at Coldwater Creek who never really rode much before Sunday!  Most of us never thought he’d make it to the top.  He was riding a borrowed rigid bike that was a size too small for him.  He ended up walking a good part of the upper roads, but still made it.  He wanted desperately to make the summit, so I told JoBeth to go ahead down and I’d accompany him to the top (Summit #3 for me).  We ended up walking the 1/2 mile or so to the top and I got his picture too.  He’ll have great stories to tell the family back in India about his day climbing Baldy.
But our adventure wasn’t over yet...

Everyone else had already headed down and regrouped to be lead back by Andy.  Retish and I were on our own.  Being guided up by Andy, I didn’t pay that close attention to the turns and we were now on our own.  Part way down we missed a critical left turn (we were enjoying the nice fast downhill!) and by the time we realized we missed the turn, we were a several miles further downhill and hundreds of feet lower.  Neither of us wanted to turn around and climb back up.  The road was good and we agreed that it must go somewhere where we could get cell reception or find a pay phone so off we went further downhill.  The first folks we encountered were a couple from Spokane out huckleberry hunting (way too early this year) and they gave us our first idea of where we were.  East of Priest River and south of Priest Lake.  They directed us toward Priest River and after a while we encountered another guy out on his four-wheeler.  He gave us directions to the Green Owl Bar (the nearest place with a pay phone) about 3-4 miles away.

We are now over an hour late getting back to Andy’s, there is no cell coverage and the area is sparsely populated and we are tired and out of water..  We stop at a farm house along the way.  I holler to see if anyone is home.  No one answers.  I walk up to the front door to knock and then turn around to see a county Sheriff heading down the drive.  I thought Andy had already called in a missing persons report and they were out looking for us.  I walk up to the Sheriff and ask if he was looking for us and he said no.  I explained our situation and he explained to me that the house we chose to approach was the Sheriff's (his boss!).  He was just driving by and saw two cyclists where they probably shouldn’t be and pulled in to check.  After more back and forth, Sheriff Gary Newman placed a radio call to dispatch and they got a hold of Andy who came to rescue us.

All in all it was a great day!  My first trip up Baldy and my first ride to (nearly) Priest River all in one day.  Thanks again to Andy Chapman for organizing the adventure and then rescuing us after our mistakes.
Any adventure you live to talk about is good one!

  -- Jim

Hola Mountain Bikers…

This weekend’s Tour de Sandpoint hosted by the Pend Oreille Pedalers was a very fun time. We had a crew of 8 FTTRC folks show up on Saturday, for a tour of the Syringa trail system, which is built “IMBA perfect”, and then a shuttle from Schweitzer, followed by a pot luck at Jim Seyferts and live moose display (no kidding). Sunday, we toured the new Mineral Point connector trails, built by machine by the Forest Service, and hand finished by the POP.  We then finished with a swim and a picnic at Garfield Bay. Many thanks to Paula Lee for planning everything so well – we all had a lot of fun. We are going to keep each other’s clubs posted of outings to combine the fun – there is an outing the weekend of Aug 16 to some trails north of Bonner’s Ferry, involving a camp out at Robinson Lake near the Canadian border, and lots of new singletrack that has been built up there. Contact Paula Lee  paula@... for more details.

Speaking of outings –

Matt Lyons and the Spokane BOMB group will be riding the Trail of the Hiawatha on July 26.

Your choice: The 30+mile round trip starting at the bottom of the route at Pearson trailhead, or the 17-mile downhill only (shuttle bus return) option.  For the uninitiated, the ride is a beautiful mountain route through 10 old railway tunnels and over 7 high trestles with a maximum grade of about 2%.  This is a ride for everyone who enjoys great scenery and a unique riding experience.  Helmets and lights (for the tunnels) are required.   A day pass for the route is required ($9); light rental is extra. The early/advanced riders group plan to drive to Pearson from Wallace and ride up to the top to meet with the downhill group, and ride back down together.  Exact times will follow.  If you're interested in joining the ride, e-mail spokanebomb@... to be added to the mailing list.

And,

American Falls, August 2. This is a fabulous 16 mile (out and back) singletrack trail North of Priest Lake on the Upper Priest River that goes through old growth cedar. Adrianna will be providing details soon, but mark your calendar now.

Other tidbits –

Spokane Bike Park: The bike park team will be having a work day planning session this weds night 6 PM at Rockpointe, call Peter for details 991-5218.  Three work sessions for the novice are planned: this sat July 19, Aug 16, Sept 13.  The plan is to add some built elements to the skills area: novice ladders, teeters and easy bridges to go with the natural rock terrain.  Even if you are a die hard XC rider, this stuff will be a blast to play on when it’s done, and great skill building for any  kind of rider.  Do come and help!  Call Peter for site info.

Folks, we need volunteers, not going to be shy about asking.  Don’t make us beg….

First thanks to Bryan G for taking over the treasurer from Greg, whose work/travel schedule was not working well with the position.

Spokane Trail clean up this fall – as part of the charette event weekend (Oct 25), the Mountaineers are taking the lead on a trail clean up for the Beacon area to coincide with the Saturday of the workshop. It would be appropriate for members to offer to help as we are a major partner in the charette. Several of us are already up to our eyeballs in workshop logistics and we really need you to help with this. The basic plan is trash pickup but this could get bigger as the COPS NE folks are talking about helping pull out old car hulks etc.  Let me (Penny) know and I’ll put you in contact with the clean up organizer. Also, Wheelsport East will be partnering with this. (thank you Chris and Crew)

6 strong riders (and Bob Phillips) left from Sandpoint Sports for our
normal (but displaced starting point) Monday evening group road ride.
We went north from Kootenai Cutoff on Hwy 95, East on Colburn-Culver
and followed it down to Rapid Lightning and out to the end of the
pavement (Hey, its a road ride) and back Rapid Lightning to
Colburn-Culver and back to Kootenai Cutoff via Shingle Mill.

After getting organized north of the traffic signal, we had a fine
pack riding experience.

*****************************
BUT CAUTION. There is a devil of a pothole in the road where the
Colburn-Culver bridge crosses Pack River. CAUTION
************************************

Once again, I've gotta tell you folks who don't come ride with us that
you are missing the joy, the essence of traditional cycling.

Please, come ride with us.

I went up to the Lizzie shop this morning expecting to true a couple
of wheels in a short time.

NOT

Rust-stuck nipples, broken spokes, odd sized freewheel splines, etc. etc.

I've put together a kit for wheel repair that I'll take up to the shop
tomorrow. It consists of:

A DT Ruler for measuring spoke length (on loan to the shop),
A bag of 15-gage (1.8-mm diameter) nipples
A bag of 14-gage (2.0-mm diameter) nipples
A few stainless steel spokes in various lengths.

To replace a spoke:
Remove and measure it;
Find a replacement spoke that is the "same" length;
Note the diameter of the replacement spoke;
Get a nipple the right size;
Replace the spoke;
Tension the spoke.

If the situation gets really bad, give me a holler. I have a
threading die that can be used to shorten spokes.

i've ridden from nelson to creston via route 6 and over the pass on route 3.  as i recall, the shoulders are good to fair on both roads and the riding is gorgeous.  i would think 5 days would be very doable for the entire loop.  sandpoint to creston is about 1/5 to 1/4 of the loop distance and that was about 4 or 5 riding hours.

Chuck,
It is a very pretty route.

There are some narrow shoulders on 95 north of Sandpoint.

I believe the shoulder along Hwy 31 is OK for cycling; and there is a fall ride out of Newport that returns down Hwy 20, and that stretch of road (Hwy 31 into Newport, WA has adequate shoulder --but the organizers of the fall ride prefer to route the riders to the east side of the  Pend O'rielle River.

The prevailing winds give you a boost along Hwy 2 from Newport back to Sandpoint.  Look for the bike trail on the north side of Hwy 2 at Dover because the shoulder along Hwy 2 from Dover into Sandpoint is minuscule.

Here are some links
http://www.byways.org/share/experiences/show/282 (a tour from Spokane, WA into Montana, back to Sandpoint, and around the Selkirk Loop)

http://www.byways.org/explore/byways/2486/itinerary/63732 ( pretty good overview of the route --from a motorist's viewpoint)

You might contack Fern Kissel of the San Diego Knickerbikers for information on good stops along the route.

This is the last address I have for her.
fkissel@...

Good luck, enjoy; and send us a trip report.

The Cycle Hard for Education ride is less than three months away. This 150 mile ride will be held on September, 13th.  At the last meeting, POP members decided to staff the rest stop in Troy, Montana.  If you're looking for some way to volunteer but don't want to get dirty building trails, this may be an opportunity for you.  Preliminary time frame is roughly a 10 a.m. set-up in Troy and 2:00 p.m. take down.  Three people have volunteered to help so far (Chris Bier, Debbie Schmitz and Jim Seyfert).  I'm looking for two to three more POP members to help fully staff this stop.  We will also be collecting homemade goodies for the stop (details forthcoming).

Secondly, we're in need of 5-gallon dispensing water jugs for this ride.   Several people volunteered jugs (Debbie Schmitz, Dave Reseska, Jim Dounda, Paula Lee, Randy Smith (5!), Chris Bier and Jim Seyfert) at the last meeting.  If you're not on this list but would be willing to loan your jug on Saturday, September 13th, let me know.  I'm thinking of collecting them at our September meeting.

This event is a fundraiser for the Panhandle Alliance for Education's Ready! For  Kindergarten literacy program.  It is a great opportunity for our bike club to be involved in this community event.  Please e-mail me if you can help staff the rest stop or loan a jug :).
