Pedalers,

Local resident Mel Dick will be heading out of town on his bike Sunday June 1st to begin his epic 10,000 mile ride across and around America.  Escorting him to Newport, WA (approx. 34 miles one-way) is the second event of our upcoming Bike Week.  Although a fund raiser for Panhandle Alliance for Education, we welcome ANYONE to ride with us just for the show of support!  No need to raise any monies, we’d just love to have you join us!  Sag support will be available and return rides will be available for those not wishing to ride their bikes back.  Road or mountain bike riders welcome!

• help support Bike Week
• help support and escort Mel Dick on the start of his amazing journey
• ride one-way (34 miles) or round trip (68 miles)
• road bikes OR mountain bikes okay. Pace will be moderate as Mel is towing a weighty trailer!
• use the following link to get a registration form
• no need to raise money or pay, but donations to Panhandle Alliance for Education will be accepted.

Heading quickly downhill to meet the Club riders for last Thursday
night's dirt bike ride, I fell into the roadside ditch and bashed my
head. The file I've just added, titled "wandering around dazed" shows
one of the results of that crash.

Have a look. You can see that I rode for only about a minute before
crashing and then spent the next 50 minutes wandering up and down the
street in a daze. I finally got back on the bike and rode back up the
hill to my house.

From there, Joan took me to the ER, where it was found that I'd jammed
my femur into my hip hard enough to crack my pelvis. The healing cycle
will give me time to shop for a new bash hat.

This is something like the 6th bike helmet I've ruined and by far the
most serious head injury I've sustained from those impacts. I shudder
to think of what damage might have been done if I'd been bareheaded.
I believe that I wouldn't be able to be walking around on crutches
bitching about missing the Farragut Race Series next month.

At the Lost In The 50's car parade, I noticed a number of
conscientious parents riding bareheaded with their kids dutifully
wearing cycling helmets.

Please, it is not your time to die of a cycling head injury. Don't
forget your crash helmet

Ok Everybody! In preparation for our first Pend Oreille Pedalers Bike Swap, we need to lend our assistance in moving some items at our swap site.

This Saturday, May 17th. 9:AM til Noon, at the latest.

The items to be moved are mostly used construction materials, 2x4's,2x6's a pile of timbers, misc. things of some historical value. I really don't think it will take more then 2-3 hrs if we have a good showing of willing and able folks. I am liking the sounds of 2 hrs!

The plan is to meet at the old Co-Op Grainery, the biggest building in town, 522 Church St between 5th and 6th Ave's.

Bring a pair of gloves! And, hey, your bike! Go for a ride afterwards.

See you there, and a big thanks,

Is anyone thinking about doing the PAFE Ride to Newport as only a 1/2
ride instead of the full 68? I have a co-worker who is interested in
becoming a P.O.P., soon and who is also interested in riding the 1/2
(34 miles), but would like to be able to have a confirmed person to car
pool with. She said the site indicates no confirmed rides back, at
this point.

Please let me know your thoughts...

Thanks!

Yvonne, I met with Steve Holt and John Edwards at the old Co-Op building wed morning. It is a really nice space! Their clean-up is mostly moving old building supplies from one giant room to another. I told them we would come help and we set the date for Sat May 17th. I'd like to do 3 hrs, 9:am to noon. There is a pile of big timbers that will require some backbone, but most of it is easily handled.

Will you post this notice to POP?

Oh yeah, they are in the process of painting the place right now.

Hey Everybody, I'm getting reports from riders for various trails in our area. Seems like these beautiful days have the wheels turning!

What I have been told:

Gravel Pit; ride it up to the view point, past that you encounter snow
Trail 3; Much snow and lot's of debris, best wait a few weeks
Syringa Trails; riding well
Mineral Point; sad to report a bunch of blow down trees have ripped up the
trail bed. Be prepared to dismount in a few places

And a big round of applause for the Long Bridge sweeping team! The road gravel is now out of the way for safe riding.

See you all out there!

Pedalers,

Here it is almost May and time to finally get the weekly road and trail rides going.  Who else still has snow in their yard?   :)

As we agreed at the first POP club meeting way earlier this month, road rides will be on Mondays and trail rides on Thursdays.

All club rides are declared “no-drop” and as such, one club member will agree to hang back and make sure all slower and/or new riders are supported.  Sub-groups may form and settle into different paces, but no one will be left behind.  Regrouping along the way will be optional, but let’s not leave anyone, especially newcomers, alone at the back.   Let’s strive to make this “no-drop” policy work this year!

Road Rides:
Mondays at 5:30pm
Meet at Pend d'Oreille Winery (Cedar and 3rd Ave) on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Mondays of the month (we’ll ride to the south)
Meet at Sandpoint Sports (Hwy 95 north of town near Taco Bell) on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month (we’ll ride to the north)

Trail Rides:
Thursdays at 5:30pm
Meet at Pend d'Oreille Winery (Cedar and 3rd Ave)

Those who show up choose the ride for that night.  And please remember not to drop anyone off the back!

See you out on the roads & trails!

Hey all you Pedalers! We had a great day of riding over at Riverside State Park in Spokane last Sunday. All in all I believe about 19 Sandpointians were there!

In fact, it was so good, I want to do it again! So if you're interested, meet this coming Sunday, May 5th, at the Federal Building on Hwy 2, at 9:30. We'll figure out carpooling as best we can. What worked good last week was folks pitched in $5 for gas money to the person who drove.

This is weather permitting, it being spring and all........

Pedalers and users of the Long Bridge path,

Sorry for the short notice.  I just found out that neither the State nor the County is planning to sweep the Long Bridge pedestrian bridge this year.
Those of you who have been on it recently know how bad it is with all of winter's gravel and debris all over it.

A lady named Vicky is coordinating a volunteer effort to manually sweep a usable path on the bridge this Saturday, April 26th.  She has gotten approval to do this, the debris will be collected and put in containers and hauled off (we cannot sweep it into the lake!).

As the cycling club in town, I hope we can provide a decent turnout to help with this effort.  Most all of us use this bridge once in a while and can benefit from it being cleaned.
To help out with this effort please show up Saturday and spread the word if you can.

When: Saturday April 26th
Start time: 9am
Meeting location: south end of the Long Bridge
Parking is available at Northern Energy next to the Longhorn Grill.  Please don't use the Longhorn Grill lot.
Bring: brooms, shovels to pick the stuff up and gloves
A truck will have access to the bridge to haul it away

If you have questions, contact Vicky at 208-290-1417

Hey all you Pedalers! There is going to be a ride happening this Sunday, April 27th. A group of us are going to ride the trails at Riverside Park in Spokane, where the upcoming 24 hour race will be held. This ride is not limited to only those of us who will be racing, but is open to anyone who is wanting some fun trails that are free of mud and snow. The report I got from a friend over there is that the area is prime right now.

So, if you want to go, the plan is meet at the Federal Building parking lot at 9:30 AM. this Sunday. We'll see who needs a ride over and carpool. Anticipate several hours of riding, and typically some of us stop at a pub for a bite to eat on the way home.

Hope to see a handful of you Sunday!

Hi Pedalers,

You may remember some information I sent around last winter regarding a
timber thinning/fuels reduction project on Gold Hill also known as the Gold
Crown Project. If you are interested in what that project is and how it may
impact both your recreational interests or possible land ownership
interests, then read the attachment. There is an Environmental Assessment
link to get the full scope of the project.

Any protests must be filed within a 30 day period from the legal notice to
be published in the CdA Press (for those of you who subscribe). I think
that this is that notice via email.

Some thinning is definitely necessary - it's a lot nicer riding in treed
areas rather than burned ones, but you should be aware and now is the time
if you have anything to say about the project.

Happy reading!

Please open the attached letter regarding the Gold Crown Fuels Reduction
Project. Our interdisciplinary team is nearing completion of the
environmental assessment (EA) for this project, and we want to ensure that
you know how you can review or request copies of the EA and associated
reports. We anticipate completion and release of the EA next Wednesday,

Thank you for your participation in the development and analysis of this

Mr. Davidson,

I'm sorry that our notice letter was not more clear. The EA and supporting
documents have not all been finalized yet. We expect them to be completed
and released this Wednesday, April 23, 2008. When the EA is complete, the
EA and all supporting specialist reports will be placed on the website you
visited. The notice letter we mailed out Friday was meant to give
interested parties adequate time to decide if they would prefer a hard copy
or CD version of the EA once it's published, or if they would be satisfied
viewing documents on the website (as you apparently are.)

Please let me know if you have further questions. Thank you! We appreciate
your interest and participation in the management of your National Forests.

Hi there Pedalers!

Andy Chapman and myself volunteered to organize a table to represent the Pedalers this coming Sunday for Sandpoint’s Earth Day Festival at the Community Hall.
We are looking for additional Pedalers to volunteer to assist the effort.  If you can help out with an hour (or more) of your time this Sunday, please let me know.
The Festival runs from 11am to 5pm.  We’d like two people staffing the table throughout (one at the table and one can roam around to check out the rest of the Festival).
If you have one of the Pedaler jerseys, it’d be nice to wear it for the event.
We’ll have our ever popular local riding map, club info and application forms available and a flyer on the upcoming Bike Week activities to hand out.

Please consider helping the club out this Sunday.  We just want an hour or two of your time!   :)
This will be a wonderful opportunity to talk up the club and win some converts to join our ranks and help make the Sandpoint area a much more friendly cycling town!

If particular times work best for you, let me know.
If you can’t volunteer, consider riding your bike over and stopping by to check out the event..should be a great start to our much delayed spring!

Hello Yvonne and everyone!

I signed up to work at the bike swap on Friday but I will be starting a
new job soon and I don't know exactly what my new hours will be
but....... as one of my jobs (that I'm keeping) is at Outdoor
Experience I will be able to bring over 2 tables and some clothing
racks for displaying clothes. I will probably bring those over Friday
during the day, well before 4:00. I will keep you posted. Thanks for
all the time you've put into this Yvonne, and to everyone who
volunteered!

Reputable sources say that the Shoreline trail and the ones out in the
open at Farragut are rideable. Access road to Mineral Point still deep
in snow. In Spokane: Beacon Hill, the South Hill, and most of
Riverside state park very rideable.

Let's break in those tender butts! Wasn't last weekend great!

So obviously I missed the first meeting. I do, however, have an excuse: I was
out riding my mountain bike. On a trail.

This should be surprising for two reasons: one, there's still four feet of snow
in my yard; and two, seeing as I'm sporting a new pair of specially chromed
and polished hips with matching sockets, I probably shouldn't be allowed to
look at mountain bikes, much less ride one.

But I took off for Tucson for spring break, and have a handy local trail that has
a high penalty for failure (cacti) but is about as close to level as you can get
and hence no real fear factor.

It was fun, and so there's a real chance I might be back to almost keeping up
on rides by the end of the summer. :-)
