Friends:

Some folks said 8:00 was early for a Saturday morning, so we've changed the meeting time to 9:00...as well as the meeting place.

When:  Saturday, September 24th, 9:00 A.M.

Where:  Parking lot at the north end of the Long Bridge (carpool to the trailhead).

The plan for the day is to repair some natural damage, as well as damage inflicted by some well-meaning individuals who apparently added some "down the fall-line" sections.  We know how quickly they erode, so we need to get them repaired ASAP.

Please RSVP to Jan@... or call me (255-9954) so I can get an idea how much equipment to bring.

Please bring leather work gloves, eye protection and water.

Chocolate Almond Fudge Cliff bars will be provided (other flavors available by special request).

Thanks in advance for your help and participation.

Jan Lee

BTW:

Thanks to everyone who helped build the Sherwood Forest trail at Syringa again this morning (and the other days).  A most excellent job, Trail Crew...  Sweet in-sloped (bermed) turns, nice finish work and features.

Hopefully, everyone observed the impact that one horse can have on a mountain bike trail...(speaking of the hoof prints and roto-tilling, as well as the feces left behind).

Hi Mark, can you forward this onto the POP riders
----

Larry and Bee Jay Baggett are leaving town very soon and we thought it would be nice to get everyone together to say good bye.  So the plan at this time is to meet Wednesday for a short ride then head over to Six Star Auto for pizza.  This way we can all talk and co-mingle instead of being at one end of the table or the other.

We will be ordering pizza from second Ave, so please RSVP me and/or Robb Repp ( rjrepp@... ) as soon as possible.

See you there...

Hello Riders,

As most of you know, Larry Bagget is closing his bike shop & moving to Colorado. We will all miss Larry & BJ. We have planned a get-together Wed evening at 7:30 at 2nd Ave Pizza to have pizza and visit once more before they leave. We can do a short spin out to Sagle & back before, if the weather permits. If you want to join for the ride meet at the parking area at the north end of the bridge at 5:45.

I would also like to encourage all to participate in the Kootenai River Ride in Bonners on the 24th. The ride was a lot of fun last year. Registration deadline is Sept 15. Registration forms can be downloaded from http://www.ruralnorthwest.com/rotary/bike05.htm .

If any of you are interested in being the person in charge on a trail
project, this would be a good one. It should be straightforward. It is a
good opportunity for someone who really wants to do a little more than just
show up. Just speak up sometime in the next week.

Pedalers,

I just spoke with Mary Ann Hamilton with the Forest Service. We had
originally agreed to lead a trail maintenance project on Gold Hill Trail #3
that day. For us to do this, we need to have someone from the club step
forward and shepherd this project. Will it be you?

The project:
==============
Basically, the project would consist of assembling a trail crew with tools
and doing the same kind of trail maintenance that we did earlier this year
on the Mineral Point trail (cut back overgrowth, remove troublesome stumps
and rocks, clean the tread and work on corners). Then, of course, ride the
trail with pride of ownership!!

Mary Ann will not be able to attend as she is leaving tomorrow morning for
Mississippi to aid in the disaster recovery efforts and will return only in
time to participate in the Mickinnick Trail Open House which will be
occurring also on the 24th.

So if you wish the club to participate in Public Lands Day, consider
stepping up to lead the effort. Please reply to the list letting everyone
know you are interested and then others, I'm quite sure will step up to
help. If no one steps forward to lead this, it may very well not happen.

Clif Bar and IMBA award 2005 Trail Preservation Grants

Clif Bar, a leading producer of energy foods and drinks, and the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) are pleased to announce the 12 winners of the 2005 Trail Preservation Grants program. The $500 grants will help clubs preserve and enhance trail access, promote environmental education, and inspire conservation.

"Clif Bar's ongoing relationship with IMBA is an incredibly valuable one. As a company devoted to community service and environmental education, supporting the IMBA Trail Preservation Grants is a no-brainer. We commend IMBA and the grant winners," says Grady O'Shaughnessy, sports marketing manager at Clif Bar.

Fifty-eight grants totaling $29,000 have been distributed since the IMBA/Clif Bar Trail Preservation Grants program was established in 2001. Previous IMBA/Clif Bar Trail. The 2005 Trail Preservation grant winners are

Dear Pedalers,

As it is September, and a year has passed for our little bike club, I sat down and wrote up a list of what we've done this first year. It took 3 pages. Wow. The report is attached for your perusal.

Just a reminder that we're not done for the year yet. Here's what's up:

Wednesday evening ride, September 7 will meet at Lincoln School on Boyer Ave to ride up to Schweitzer (not from winery this time, per Rob from Selkirk psycholists)

Saturday, Sept 10, 8AM to noon: trail building in Sherwood Forest. Even if you can only contribute an hour or 2, show up and pitch in. Come, on. You know you use these trails...  Oh, and we'll have schwag to give away this time.

Sunday, Sept 11: Schweitzer Hill Climb, details and registration at Alpine Designs.

Club meeting will be Tuesday, Sept 20.

We will be having an end-of-season ride and party, this year on the Cowboy Trail and Wylie Knob. Details in the future...

Keep riding till the snow flies.

Roadie Pedalers,

Bob Philips and I rode the 50 mile version of this ride on Sunday. The
ride, sponsored by the Newport/Priest River Rotary and Newport Kiwanis left
Newport Park, headed SW out of town on Hwy 2 for a couple miles before
leaving the Highway for more scenic rural roads. We continued heading SW
(unfortunately they ran out of route sheets so my recollection of all the
roads is limited!) from town. Bob and I hooked up with a bunch of riders
from the Baddlands Bicycle Racing Club (Spokane) and rode most of the ride
with them or frantically chasing them down <g>.

For those who know the area, we worked our way SW and then north, crossing
Hwy 2 south of Pend Oreille State Park. We then worked our way north toward
Sacheen Lake which we skirted and then returned to Newport via Deer Valley
Road.

The weather was delightful, the route scenic and inspiring, the roads good
(a fair section of Deer Valley Rd was recently chip-sealed, but then we are
used to that over here!) and the support excellent. There were three rest
stops on the 50-miler (most riders passed the third stop). Each stop had a
nice selection of fruit, home-made cookies, other snacks and water and
Gatorade. Lunch after the ride consisted of huge baked potatoes with a
smorgasbord of yummy toppings.

All this plus a t-shirt for $30 (including the $5 late reg. fee).
Approximately 130 riders participated in the three different routes: 15, 30
and 50 miles. Bob and I agreed it was well worth the short 30 minute drive
over and will do it again next year, Saturday of Labor Day weekend. We
invite you to consider joining us!

If you participated in the weekend, you know how much fun it was. More fun

Sunday the 11th is Schweitzer Hill climb.
That leaves Monday the 5th: Labor Day. Anybody want to make plans?

Hi Jim, This is such a bummer! I have 3 activities (one in Spokane) all
on Wednesdays. Because of this, please remove me from your activity and I
will connect with Bill Mc when things level off. Thanks for your
companship! Carol Hemus.

Pedalers,

As you've read in my other message today, I've just returned from a couple
weeks down-state. One thing I've noticed is the lack of traffic (read:
none) on the newly created POP listserver. Not that this is wrong, but
since it's been created, we might as well use it to communicate club and
other cycling related activities. Doing a weekend ride and want others to
join? Post a message a day or two in advance and see what happens! :)

Mark Savarise had a problem posting to the group recently because he sent a
message from a different e-mail account than he used to register with the
Yahoo Group. Just a note to all: you must post to the Group using the same
e-mail account you used to subscribe or add the alternate one which you can
do by accessing your Yahoo account membership (My Account) after entering
the Yahoo Group site: http://groups.yahoo.com/mygroups

Here again are the essential addresses necessary to post and manage your
membership in the PendOreillePedalers Yahoo Group:

Post message: PendOreillePedalers@yahoogroups.com
Subscribe: PendOreillePedalers-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
Unsubscribe: PendOreillePedalers-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com
List owner: PendOreillePedalers-owner@yahoogroups.com

If you have any questions at all about making this work for you, please call
or message me. I want to see this listserver really serve us in our
communication needs as a new club.

Ride on!

Hi Pedalers!

I just returned from a fabulous week touring the southwestern part of our
wonderful state with Colleen in the inaugural Ride Idaho tour. What a
delightful week it was.

We had approx. 60 folks doing the full week ride including a newly wed
couple (got married on Sunday and joined us on Monday for the rest of the
week!), and folks from nine different states. Ages ranged from a teenager
with his mom to a 75 year old woman! She was great! More folks joined us
on the initial day, Sunday the 14th from Boise to Payette, and then again
from Crouch to Idaho City and Boise last Friday & Saturday.

For me several things stand out about this ride:

* everyone felt extremely safe considering Idaho is not known for being
bicycle friendly. We had motorcycle police escorts each day patrolling the
route and even performing moving traffic breaks! We felt like a special
racing peloton!

* the organizers, wishing to make a big positive impact, bent over backwards
for all of us, even modifying their "agenda" when we wished. They really
want to make this a premier state tour.

* live music several nights by very good regional bands. We were also
serenaded by Motor Officer Rich on his bagpipe several nights.

* Option to do a raft trip on the North Fork of the Payette River south of
Cascade. Beautiful river away from the highway. We also rented a pontoon
boat and cruised around Payette Lake in McCall.

* the camaraderie of the group was very evident at the completion in Boise
on Saturday. The staff even created a CD from all the digital cameras on
the trip so everyone could share each others photos.

So, if you're interested in participating next year (as we are) mark this
page and check back as the organizers decide on the route and dates for that
ride. They may do the same loop or do it backwards or head over to the
Stanley area. A tour in our neck of the woods is also being considered, but
probably not in the next few years.

I'll be preparing a laptop photo slideshow of the ride and bring it to the
next Pedaler meeting I can attend. That'll probably be October as I'll be
helping Colleen move up here in mid-September!

Hi Pedalers!

I have migrated about 60 individual names from Mark's e-mail list to our new listserver and this is the first message sent to the newly populated list.
We are up and running!  Hurray!

A few things to note:

1) All members can post and receive e-mail once added to the Group.  I was mistaken in my earlier claim.  All of you should be able to post to the Group as of now.

2) I changed the prefix that will be attached to all messages to read [POP].  This is shorter and to the point.  One valuable purpose of the prefix is to setup a filter to send all POP mail into one folder on your computers e-mail client.

3) Use of the list.  The list is not moderated, so any member can post anything they wish to the list.  Please respect all members and limit postings to club and bicycle related matters.

4) Replying to messages. As with any e-mail system, you can reply to the list (Reply to All) or to the sender only.  If your reply needs only be sent to the originator, please choose your reply option accordingly and save the list unnecessary traffic.

5) Essential list addresses.  Use these to post, subscribe or unsubscribe as you desire:
Post message: PendOreillePedalers@yahoogroups.com
Subscribe: PendOreillePedalers-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
Unsubscribe: PendOreillePedalers-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com
List owner: PendOreillePedalers-owner@yahoogroups.com

6) There are other useful features included with the free Yahoo Group such as calendar, photo gallery, database and polling ability.  Over the course of time we may start to use some of these features.  If you’ve joined the Group via the Invitation I sent out, feel free to check out these features.  There are a few photos in the photo section and I do plan to add calendar items from time-to-time.

Anyway, the list is now active.  Post away!  :)
