Janice and Doug Clarke made a trip to Gatlinburg, TN where they met up with Carol and Jim Zender.  They spent a week at the Zender’s time share. They were lucky the leaves were at their peak and the weather was great !  The foursome took in Pigeon Forge, some shows, and lots of shopping.  The big Gatlinburg fall craft show with 200 venders was on  while they were there and, of course, they found a couple of things that they could just not live without !!!!!   It was a fun week; that went by much too quickly.

The Thanksgiving Ecumenical Service held at the Parish-Hastings Presbyterian Church on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 22 was very well attended.  The area churches were very well represented.  It was an enjoyable afternoon of praise, fellowship, goodies and helping our neighbors.  Special thanks to the United Methodist Church that collected frozen turkey dinners and pies.

The Parish Senior Club, at the Parish Senior Dining and Activity Center will be taking an APW school bus to “Lights on the Lake” in Liverpool on Tues., Dec. 1.  The bus will leave promptly at 4:30 p.m.  The cost will only be $4 per person, all inclusive.  Call to 625-4617 or 625-4575 to make a reservation, the seating is limited.

Whooooohooo!  Parish's own—Melodie Schuyler has been named Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce's Business Woman of the Year !!!!   Friends are encouraged to join in a trip to Mel’s “Café Milan” in Fayetteville on Friday, Dec. 4 at 2 p.m.  We shall have lunch (at your own expense) and give Mel the recognition she deserves.  We will meet at the Parish-Hastings Presbyterian church at 1 p.m. and carpool.    Call Mary Lou at 625-4575 or email guindfam@....  Congratulations, Mel, we are so proud of you!

The Parish United Methodist Church will hold their annual Chicken and Biscuit Dinner on Saturday, December 5, at the Parish Fire Station, 25 Union Street.  Serving will begin at 4:30 pm.  Dinner will include:  Chicken and Biscuit, Gravy, Mashed Potatoes, Squash, Cabbage Salad, Veg., Cranberry Relish, and Homemade Pies.  Please plan to come and enjoy.

The tree is up at the Parish Key Bank, filled with the Elves at Work name tags.  Please make a Christmas brighter, pick up a tag and purchase appropriate Christmas toys for those children in need.

The annual Caroling/Tree Lighting and evening of family fun will be held on Sat, Dec. 5.  The Parish Town Historical Society will provide refreshments at the park.  The Greater Parish Area Chamber of Commerce is asking for vendors, groups, organizations and businesses that are interested in providing a presentation, an activity and/or music to contact Mary Lou Guindon at 625.4575.  All involved are asked to provide a themed basket for the popular basket raffles.

The Greater Parish Area Chamber of Commerce’s Holiday House/Business Decorating Contest details:   Town of Parish houses and businesses will be judged* (exterior only)  between Dec. 8-11, 2009.  The winners will be announced in the Independent Mirror’s Dec. 19 edition and on the web: http://parishchamberofcommerce.parish-ny.com.

It is simple, just send in your name, physical address of your home or business to be judged, phone number and email address (neatly printed) along with a $2 entry fee to “Greater Parish Area Chamber of Commerce”  PO Box 303, Parish, NY  13131.   It must be received by, Sat. Dec. 5 (last chance—at the tree lighting event.)  The prize money: $20 first place and $10 second place; and the Business— top entry will receive 1/4 ad in the Independent Mirror.   *There must be 5 or more entries or the contest will be cancelled.

The Parish Town Historical Society (PTHS) 2010 calendars are now available.  You may purchase your $7.50 calendar ($10 if mailed)  at the Parish Public Library during regular business hours.   These unique calendars will be for sale at the Tree lighting events on Dec. 5 and at their annual Christmas Party on Wed. Dec. 9 at the Parish-Hastings Presbyterian Church annex beginning at 6:30 p.m.  The PTHS quarterly newsletter is also hot off the press and is being mailed out.     The 2010 membership dues are being accepted.  Single $10, Family $15, business $20 and sustaining member $25.  Make checks payable to Parish Town Historical Society—send to: attn:  Gloria White, PO Box 145, Parish, NY 13131.

The APW Class of 1980 is getting ready for their 30th reunion. While the details are not yet set, they are still looking for some classmates, and have set up a website that classmates can register. It's complete with the senior pictures.  Many classmates have already logged in and updated their profiles. The site is at:

Parish Village Board Meeting
Grass Roots Movement Recognized

The Grass Roots Movement; a group of four that had one goal in mind, to save the Mills & Petrie Memorial Gymnasium—One Shingle At A Time.  These ladies were recognized by the Village of Parish board of trustees for their efforts in this endeavor.  Mayor Heagle presented the group with a plaque of commendation for their efforts.

The Mills & Petrie Memorial Gymnasium has a new roof, insulation and new windows.  The Grass Roots Movement, in less than a year’s time, raised over $6000.00 to aid in the cost of the renovation; through private donations and fundraisers.

The Grass Roots Movement members: Nancy Bookheimer, Mary Lou Guindon, Mary Houghton and Sharon Robbins would like to thank all those that donated money and to the many who donated gifts for use in the fundraisers.  Also, a special thanks to the gentlemen who gave up their time to save money by spraying the insulation into the roof area, they were:  Scott Allardice, Dan Dalin, Kevin Dwyer, Doug Houghton, Mayor Heagle and Ben McDonald.
