Todd and Luz Marina Zender, officially known to their grandchildren as Nani and Poppy, celebrated their granddaughters birthday on April 4, 2009.  Julia Star Comins turned 10 years old.  She had her birthday party at the Pulaski High School.  The children swam in the pool and enjoyed cake and ice cream afterwards.  Julia asked her Nani to make her cake for this event.  The cake was designed as the ocean and it had octopuses, clown fish, sand and seaweed.

Julia was really excited to receive a Home Depot card from Nani and Poppy.  It went like this: Julia opened the greeting card and proceeded to pulled out the gift card and said with a perplexed look on her face, "A HOME DEPOT CARD."    Nani told her she was to go there and pick out the colors for her bedroom walls.  Then, she was all smiles.  Julia is in the process of designing her bedroom to look like the ocean.

On Sat. April 4th, at a local restaurant in Florida; John and Joan Piseski, Bob and Fran Gryzick, Jim and Carol Zender joining Ralph and Joyce Vesey for lunch and conversation.  They had a great time, with lots of visiting about old times, and the days growing up... John, Bob and Joyce grew up in little ol' West Amboy, and Carol and Jim in Parish...Joan in Hannibal and Fran in Miami.

Sat. April 4 at the BOCES mall the Girl Scouts of the Mexico Service Unit hosted the  “2009 Girl Scout World Culture Carnival;” which was a huge success.  The afternoon commenced with a flag ceremony including about 80 Girl Scouts from 13 different troops.   Each Girl Scout troop had their booth decorated in style; representing a variety of countries:  Australia, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Madagascar, Mexico, Poland, Scotland, Switzerland and the United States with complimenting culture games, foods or crafts.  There were three added features this year, Parish Girl Scout Junior Troop 573 performed a delightful skit; Palermo Girl Scout Junior Troop 877 collected non-perishable food items for local food pantries and a judged food contest was held.  Most of the Girl Scout troops entered a specialty dish from their chosen country.  It was very well attended by Girl Scouts, families and friends.

On Sunday afternoon, April 5 the Parish Ecumenical Easter Service was held at the Parish Church of the Nazarene with about fifty worshippers joining as one.  Following the service refreshments and fellowship were enjoyed.

Parish Senior Dining and Activity Center hosted Patti Holst, Assemblyman David Townsend’s community liaison on Monday, April 7.  Patti spoke about “Knowing their Rights”, possible scams and such topics with participants interacting with questions.

Ms. Catania and Ms. Ruffos brought twenty-four students from the Parish Elementary School, “Parish Performers,” to the Parish Senior Dining and Activity Center on Tuesday, April 8, much to the delight of the gathered seniors.  They sang several songs and five fourth graders played two songs on their recorders.  After the performance the children each received a paper bag bunny filled with treats (that the seniors had created) and posed for a picture with seniors. Just before heading back to school, they took a quick tour of the Parish Ecumenical Food Pantry with Fred Swartz.  They were among the first to see the newly constructed (awesome) shelving units built by David Sperling.  The children were interested in seeing the place where the many cans of food that they collect at different times of the year end up.  Fred explained how the collection process continues and ends up with those families in need.

Karen Ferguson and Rich of the Oswego American Red Cross joined the seniors on Thursday, April 9 with a power point show “Be Red Cross Ready” explaining how to be prepared for emergencies.
