Bill and Luella Laney just returned from Alabama where Bill's Navy MCB 6 reunion was held.  They got reacquainted with many people they haven't seen in almost two years and some they haven't seen in many years.  They also enjoyed many of the sights near and around Mobile - the Naval Aviation Museum, the battleship USS Alabama used in WW I, a tour of historic Mobile, the Bellingraph Estate, and more.  The weather couldn't have been better!

Elaine Updyke has returned home after spending a good part of the winter in the sunny south.  She visited family and friends in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Florida including the Florida Keys. Walking from her car to her brother's front door in Fort Myers, she missed a step and fell hard on his cement sidewalk.  Long story short, what was thought to be a sprained hand and a few bruises turned out to be an acute ruptured disc.  In spite of the MRI, surgery, and PT, she was able to keep to her schedule and enjoy the warm weather and sunshine.  A special thank you for all the cards and kind wishes of my many friends while I was recuperating.

25th Birthday Celebration--Relay for Life THANK YOU

Kim Perkins would like to thank everyone involved in the 25th Birthday Celebration Kick-off event held on Friday, March 27. It was very, very successful with over 110 people attending! We had so many amazing helpers- the Boy Scouts, their leaders and family members were absolutely remarkable- this group of Scouts were like a dream come true to our committee always smiling asking what they could do next- they worked continuously setting up and cleaning up. Words can't express what a blessing this group was to our event. Thanks to all the committee members and friends from the APW district for all their hard work setting up, cleaning up and for all the food, beverage and desserts that they made and brought to the kick-off, everyone of them were simply amazing, helping to pull this all together and we had tons of food.

Thanks to all our special guest speakers- Russell Crutchley our Survivor speaker, Rosemary Place our caregiver speaker, Fabian Russell from East Coast Resorts our Gold Sponsor Speaker. We thank them for sharing their stories and memories of last year's first ever Relay in Parish, they were so inspiring to us all.

Thanks to Martha Ryan, Director of Cancer Prevention and Detection for her words about how Relay fuels the cancer fighting mission & Erin Shuff our event coordinator from the ACS for all she does.

I'd like to thank Henry Gould for making his balloon hats and animals for all the children, Patty Benedetto for doing the face painting and making such a beautifully decorated 25th birthday for Relay cake, the APW art club for the #2 piñata (signifying our second relay here in Parish) and the paper mache 25 table centerpiece. Special thanks to our two clowns- they were great!

Thanks to daytime school worker Laurie and Nighttime worker Lydia for all their help over the past few days and nights helping when needed. Thanks to Ostranders and Terrells for the donation of bagged chips, Rural Bolt for the donated tank of helium for over 100 or so balloons scattered throughout the decorated cafeteria. Thanks to the Syracuse Banana company for the donation of the toss salad with all the fixings. Thanks for those that just called or emailed asking if we needed help, showed up and got involved. A extra special thanks to all the committee members it wouldn't have been the success it was without each and everyone of you.

What a fun themed event the birthday setting was and I hope everyone enjoyed themselves. Come Memorial Day we'll be doing another Relay float in all three parades spreading the word about our upcoming Relay event. All teams or people on teams and committee members are invited to walk in the parades. The time is now to start focusing on the actual Relay event on June 5th & 6th, our April meeting will begin with a team captains meeting on Monday, April 20th at 6:30pm and the committee meeting to follow at 7:30. So keep spreading the word trying to recruit new teams and invite them to that first Team captains meeting.

Thanks to everyone's help- we as a community are doing an amazing job- Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!   Together we can make a difference!

Saturday, March 28, Katherine Gimlick and her daughter and son-in-law, Marcia and George Wagner traveled to New Rochelle, NY to help Russell Wagner celebrate his birthday.  He gave them a tour of the area and had some wonderful meals - real authentic Italian and Mexican.  On Monday they returned via a scenic route.  A good time was had by all.

Connie Shovlin, Val and Kim Campbell brought it lunch!! Gretchen is feeling very lucky for such a special treat from her family.

Health Department Will Hold Rabies Clinic in Parish April 15
PARISH – Dogs, cats and pet ferrets can get a rabies shot at the Oswego County Health Department’s rabies clinic from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, at the County Highway Garage on Dill Pickle Alley, Parish.

New York State law requires that all cats, dogs, and pet ferrets be vaccinated against rabies. The first rabies vaccine should be given no later than four months of age, however the Oswego County Health Department uses a vaccine that can be given to pets at three months of age.  A second vaccination is required within one year of the first, and every three years thereafter. Pet owners should bring their pet’s last rabies certificate to the clinic.

Dogs must be leashed and cats or ferrets must be enclosed in a crate. The health department suggests a $5 donation per animal to help cover the cost of the clinic.

County residents are reminded that any time a person or pet comes in physical contact with a wild animal, the incident should be reported to the health department as soon as possible.  A bite or scratch on the skin should be washed immediately with soap and water. Pet owners should avoid having direct contact with those wounds by wearing rubber or latex gloves and eye protection (regular or safety glasses) while cleaning the wound.

To report a possible exposure, and for more information about rabies, call the Oswego County Health Department weekdays at 349-3564 or 1-800-596-3200, ext. 3564.  In an emergency during evenings, weekends, or holidays, call the health department’s answering service at 341-0086.
