Scot and Erin Houghton Barger traveled to the Canaan Valley in WV.  They stayed at a chalet  in the Timberline Resort.  First off they saw the Blackwater Falls which reminded Erin of our Salmon River Falls.  Scott and Erin hiked Seneca Rocks which had a spectacular view of the valley and the changing leaves.  The exploration continued through the Smoke Hole Caverns and saw some interesting rock formations - one stalactite was estimated to be 13 million years old and is called the Queen's Canopy.  They traveled to the highest point in WV (4,863 feet above sea level) called Spruce Knob; sighting a hang-glider run off the mountain to sail through the valley.  Their final adventure was the Seneca Caverns which was also part of the under ground railroad.
There is so much history in the area of Canaan Valley.  The guides talk about past wars, the Indians who lived there in the past, the route of the water run-off from the mountains, etc.
The Canaan Valley is a tourist type of area with a bunch of things to do like; camp, picnic, kayak, white water rafting, fish, hunt, rock climb, bike, hike, restaurants, visit nature centers, gift shops, etc.  The first two weekends of Oct. are the best times to see fall foliage change.  This area is also known for it's ski resorts in the winter.
Scot and Erin hope to return in the near future.  They were spoiled by the innocence of nature, it was hard to return to "real life".  They had hoped to see a bear after hearing that they were active this time of year, but the animals we saw most were deer, grouse, fish, chipmunks, and cows, pigs, and chickens on farms.  Luckily they didn't see any rattle snakes.  Erin hopes all is well in Parish.
Greg Gimlick visited his mother, Katherine Gimlick, and sister Marcia Wagner in Plattsburgh a couple of weeks ago.   Katherine joined Greg for the drive back home to Fuquay Varina, NC on Sept 19th. She enjoyed a wonderful visit for a week with Greg and his wife, Kathy.   It's the first time Katherine has been able to visit in several years because of he husband's health. They've been trying to get her down for a visit since the passing of Russell in March and it finally worked out. Greg and Kathy really wanted her to see our "retirement house" that we built two years ago. They traveled to the coast to enjoy lunch with Katherine’s brothers, oldest son, Doug and Marty Smith, whom she hasn't seen in many years. They also had a brief visit with Greg's son, Adam, who is a very busy restaurant manager in Holly Springs.  It was a great little family get together in New Bern, NC. Katherine returned on a plane home on the 26th of Sept.
That's about it from what's left of the Gimlick family.....except that Greg and Kathy just found out their youngest son and his wife are expecting which will be Greg and Kathy’s first grandchild.  Greg claims to be officially old now, but we know better than that.
