Rev. Arden W. Coe of Utica - New Hartford
The Rev. Arden W. Coe, 94, formerly of Acacia Village and New Hartford, died Friday, August 4, 2006 at the Masonic Care Community. He was born February 13, 1912 in Hastings son of Wilfred L. and Ethel Ingersoll Coe. He attended Parish schools and graduated from Syracuse University in 1933. He received his Bachelor of Divinity degree from Auburn Theological Seminary and his Master of Sacred Theology from Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He was ordained to the Christian Ministry by the Presbytery of Cayuga-Syracuse in 1935 in Hastings Presbyterian Church. He served pastorates in Dalton, Nebraska and Olivet Presbyterian in Utica before serving as a Chaplain in the US Army Air Force as a Captain during World War II. Rev. Coe then served as pastor of the Western Presbyterian Church in Palmyra and as Chaplain of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Canandaigua. After serving churches in Scarsdale and New Haven, CT., he worked as Vice President of the Presbyterian Ministers Fund in Philadelphia. He returned to the Utica area in 1975 as pastor of Moriah Presbyterian Church and in retirement served about 40 other churches in Central New York, including Cherry Valley-Springfield, Camden-McConnellsville, Little Falls, Oneida, Millers Mills, Yorkville and the Whitesboro Presbyterian Church. Throughout his career he was active as chairman of numerous committees in different Presbyteries. Mr. Coe was married to the late Carolyn Hall for 35 years. After her death in 1973, he married Mary Yates in 1975. She died in 2003. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Utica where he was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow. He received New Hartford's Outstanding Citizen Award for his leadership in the New Hartford Historical Society and the Utica and Mohawk Valley Chapter of the National Railway Association. He enjoyed playing bridge and bowling, participating in many men's bowling leagues. Mr. Coe was an active member of Utica Lodge No. 47 F&AM, all the York Rite Bodies and the Ziyara Shriners serving all organizations in many capacities. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Esther and Stewart Williams of Holland Patent, a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Richard and the Rev. Kathleen Coe of Greensboro, NC; six grandchildren, Keith Williams and his wife Sara, Ken Williams and his wife Teresa, Lorraine Ruganis and her husband Scott, Kurt Williams and his friend Jennifer Rehm, Diana Coe and Kirsten Corcoran and her husband Michael and seven great grandchildren, Rachel, Kaitlyn, Emma, Ellen, Mary Michelle, Will and Lucas. He also leaves two brothers and sisters-in-law, Hadwen and Verna Coe of Hastings, Carl and Vivian Coe of Huber Heights, Ohio, a niece, two nephews and several great nieces and nephews. The family wishes to sincerely thank the caregivers at the Masonic Care Community, especially the wonderful people on 1 Master Mason for the care and concern shown to Arden and the family. The funeral will be Sunday at 6 PM at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Utica with the Rev. Dr. Mark S. Caruana and the Rev. Edward A. Loper officiating. Interment will be Monday at 3 PM at White Haven Memorial Park in Pittsford. Calling hours will be Sunday from 12-4 at the Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, 13 Oxford Rd., New Hartford. Utica Lodge will conduct the Masonic Ritualistic Service Sunday at 4 PM. Friends may consider the Coe Fund for Christian Education or the Shriners Patient Transportation Fund in his memory.
