Hi Everyone I would just like to remind everyone that the juniors are
trying to get together a list of people that are willing to sponsor us
on rides. I would ask that anyone that is interested to be added on to
the list to e-mail either myself at sftbllchik5@... or Jessica
Anderson at endurancechica@.... Your name, state, and usual speed
is all that will be posted.
Thank You,

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to remind the juniors out there that I will have the "Sponsor of the
Year" box at Prineville, don't forget! Also, juniors who didn't get a chance to
nominate because they forgot or couldn't find the box/me/tiffany can email me or
Tiffany Sampson with their nomination.

Good luck on your rides!

Jessica Anderson

Was told of this by a co-worker....Be careful folks...

VANCOUVER, WASH. - A woman out for an afternoon ride in a Washington
state park had a scary encounter.
A cougar attacked the horse she was riding yesterday at Battle Ground
Lake State Park.

The horse was bitten on its neck before it was able to shake the
large cat loose.

Clark County fire Captain Jesse Martin says the cat was roughly 100
pounds.

The woman fell off the horse and was shaken but is doing well.

Martin says the horse ran for about 500 feet until the cougar let go
and ran into the bushes.

The horse is expected to recover from puncture wounds.

Martin says this is the first known cougar attack in the area.

No word on the location of the cougar.

To begin, let me state that when I hear that Becky Hart has spoken, I take
her words as endurance gospel. She's been there, done that, more and
better than just about anyone else. I also happen to agree with her. I,
too, have ridden at all distances in competition, and have produced 25, 50
and 100 mile endurance events for 20 years. The 50 and 100 mile events are
endurance rides. The 25 mile events are limited distance rides. I have an
equal amount of respect and concern for horses and riders entering all
three distances.... the respect and concern are for different
considerations, of course, since they are different entities.

I haven't produced an AERC ride for the past 7 years until the WCRT rides
I'm putting on this June 26th, but in the past on my 25 mile LD rides, I
offered 5 Best Conditioned Horse awards, open only to novice horse/rider
combinations, and not awarding for speed or weight. In other words, if
Becky Hart would have ridden a new horse in my 25 mile ride, she wouldn't
have been in contention for BC. If Suzie Q would have bought one of
Becky's experienced endurance horses and ridden him in her first 25 miler,
her horse wouldn't have been in contention for BC. Many folks entered my
25 mile LD ride year after year, always in contention for the BC's, since
neither they nor their horses had completed a 50 miler. And they had 5
chances to win, so they rode accordingly.

Was the judging subjective? Well, I've heard it said two ways: Which
horse would you choose if you're an Indian and the Calvary is coming? Or,
which horse would you choose if you were caught in bed with your best
friend's wife? Nyaahhh~~ that's not subjective.

If you're riding to get away from your best friend or the Calvary, you'd
better be on a horse who looks pretty shiny after the first 25 miles. This
horse could probably do 50 miles... or, at least, you hope so. That's
what we hoped in awarding those BC's. Hey, did I mention that the reason
folks rode those miles was for fun? They knew they weren't riding in
Valerie Kanavy's league, or that of Mike Plum, Bruce Davidson or Robert
Dover. And they didn't expect to win the same medals.

Now, just like Becky, I'm not against awarding a Limited Distance horse
Best Condition on a 25 miler. There's lots of ways it can be done. But
don't confuse it with the AERC Best Conditioned Endurance Horse score
sheet, which takes into consideration weight and time. Don't encourage
racing at the short marathon length. A horse should be capable of
finishing 50 miles in one day regularly before he should be asked to do 25
miles at a speed likely to place him in the top ten. At the finish line,
some of these 25 mile horses just catch the eye of the vets... maybe
because they've been well ridden by a 6 year old kid, like mine sometimes
did. Or because the horse looks like he hasn't been ridden at
all. Sure... Use the BC vet formula, without weight or time, when doing
the final vet check, after the horse has pulsed down to finish. The
finishing time would be noted, of course... we and the vets are all human,
and realize that if a horse finished 25 miles in 3 hours, it's a different
story than if he took 6 hours. But the most important concern, to the
exclusion of everything except "noticing", is the veterinary condition of
that horse. Of course, if you were trying to outride that Calvary or your
best friend, you probably wouldn't choose the slowest horse, no matter how
good he looked.

But this award should be for Limited Distance Horses and Riders. Much as
I hate rules, maybe acknowledge that a person or a horse might want to step
down from endurance competition, and this year compete at Limited
Distance. In other words, if either of them had competed at Endurance in
the past 12 months, they are not in contention for BC at LD this
year. Maybe it should be a 2 year step down. But encourage folks either
to ride LD rides as a break from 50's, to condition new horses, or as their
current career, with different prizes available, some tangible, some
not. And they should know that they are not being encouraged to ride at
the speed of a top ten placing in doing so.

Hello there! An excellent place to stop coming east off I90 is the john wayne
trail between ryegrass and ellensburg. The site has a vault toilet, a large
gravel trailer turnaround, and a meadow of dry (but edible) grass. I'm not sure
what exit to take (you may even have to backtrack), will refer this question
to my friend Jeanne, a local ellensburg resident. Would be a great rest before
heading over the pass. You'll know you're near when you see a strange black
steel RR bridge crossing the highway.

AERC Board of Directors,

First of all, I find it very distressing that when I asked the national
office to forward this message this morning, they refused to do so, stating
that here had been a large number of messages received and that Terry Wooley
Howe was going to make a "synopsis" of them. I feel if any individual takes
the time to write their BOD, that the BOD should receive the full content of
the message, even if all they do is hit the delete button.

That being said, I hope you will do me the courtesy of reading this message.
To some of you, it may be garbage, although I can claim riding just about
every distance from 25 to 150 in one day (bet most of you didn't know I was
an LD'er. Guess you could say I'm finally coming out!). Funny, I always that
that every member had a right to an opinion, no matter the total number of
miles, years of membership or distances ridden.

I am a west region ride manager and put on an average of two to three rides
a year. I have been doing so since 1989. I do not award an AERC LD BC award.
An alternative is offered which we call BC-10. We have a drawing when people
sign in. Those 25 milers who draw #1 through 10 can show for BC if they
complete the ride. The riders and vets love this - it gives everyone a
potential chance to show for BC and the incentive from the start of the ride
to ride carefully. We use the AERC form, but do not consider time or weight.
At this time, there is no National AERC LD BC award. No one is missing out
on a chance for it because, contrary to recent publications, it doesn't
exist!

However, this argument seems to me more about our fundamental definition of
endurance. Is endurance 50, 100 or more miles, or do we now consider 25
miles to be "endurance"? I think the AERC needs to answer this question
first, before mandating a BC award on 25 miles. When limited distance was
brought into the AERC fold, it was considered a novice division with the
intent of educating and training up and coming riders for endurance. I
strongly believe that should continue to be the primary purpose of LD rides.
We all make choices in life. We can choose to stay in the rookie division
or strive to move up. As a riding instructor I could have chosen to stay at
Level 1 and make less money or I could choose to move up the ranks and be
appropriately compensated. A dressage rider can choose to compete in
training level for years, but they do not expect to win prestigious national
awards.

We hear much about "growing the AERC". I question how much "growth" is
necessary and the methods used to obtain this growth. Due to good
management our organization has a healthy bank account and is able to
contribute to other organizations. So why do we need to encourage career 25
milers? Is this truly in the best interest of our organization? How does
anything other than a novice division at this distance contribute to the
"welfare of the horse"? By encouraging an award based on speed and time, we
are, in fact, running marathons. Interestingly enough, this idea was
presented years ago by the FEI, and was soundly denounced by our board and
international committee.

Over the years my ride entries have stayed about the same - between 60 and
80 horses per ride. The percentage of 25 mile riders has increased. In the
early years there were 3 or 4, now there are around 20. Most of them seem
to be on the edge as to whether or not to do 50. If the 25 mile BC rule is
mandated then I believe my 50 mile ride entry would increase as there would
not be a 25 mile ride offered.

Obviously, I am opposed to a 25 mile BC award that must be judged out of the
top ten. At your phone conference I hope you will discuss this matter in
preparation for the mid-year meeting. I trust we will see the pros- and
cons discussed in the AERC News well before the mid-year.

Sincerely,

Becky Hart # 1917

When my ride secretary calculated the ride times, she only subtracted one 45
minute hold on the 50 and 75 mile distances. I will adjust the final ride times
accordingly. This should not impact the BC judging, because the time difference
will remain the same.

Sorry about that.

Thanks to all who have written with such glowing reviews! Does a ride manager's

What are your favorite stops for horse breaks when hauling between Boise and

I know that Utah requires you to stop at weigh stations as well. If
you are stopped when leaving the state, and have driven by a weight
station when you entered the state, they once told me that they will
turn you around and send you back to the first weight station. They
actually track your progress across the state. As Pat said, I have
never actually had them check the horses, but they do look at health
papers, coggins, and brand inspections.

The August 28 100, CEI*** ride in Oreana, has a new name ~Abu Dhabi~ Arabian
Nights, and a new sponsor 'Emirates International Endurance Village'. We're
going to make this a fun weekend for all, food-entertainment-goodies, as
well as a top notch event. The course was designed for the US Squad in
preparation for the 2004(5) WEC in Dubai - so it will be fairly flat and
fast.

But* the good news is that if you don't want to race, there will be a full
moon - and you can just dawdle along (or hang out in the shade) during the
heat of the day, and finish the ride at night, by the light of the moon! You
will have 24 hours to complete the course, and there are no cutoff times. We
will have some very special turtle awards, and the Owyhee desert is
spectacular in the moonlight...

This is an open AERC 100, and an FEI CEI*** ride.

I can mail you an entry packet, or you can print off the website:

http://www.endurance.net/oreana/arabiannights/

There will be several foreign riders coming and some will be looking for
horses to lease (or swap for a ride on their soil) - if you are interested
in a lease or loan situation send me an email.

Steph

p.s. Bill Basham, the Gourmet Chef will be cooking all weekend!

I drive past the Port of Entry/weigh station east of Boise all the time and
never stop. I believe it is based on gross vehicle weight whether they want
you to stop or not. The one or two times I did stop, they looked at me like
I was nuts.

I have never driven into Utah, but I have driven to Oregon a lot and
Washington occasionally, as well as Nevada. The only time I was ever asked
for papers was on a Sunday afternoon at the Chevron in Vale, coming back
from the Oregon 100. It was the state brand inspector. I think he was
having a slow day. Idaho requires a brand inspection. We only get a
Coggins and health certificate to travel out of state.

If you call different states, you will probably get different answers,
depending on who you talk to. At least, that sure seems to be the case in
Idaho.

Hello Everyone,

Just a quick note to let you know Purple Passion is on track and looks like
the weather Gods will cooperate (for a change). We had a strong wind front
blow in yesterday, should be gone by this afternoon. It's very cool this
morning but supposed to be in the 70s on Saturday. I'll have plenty of
water tanks out.

The trail is mostly marked, basically identical to last year: 75 four
loops, 50 three loops, 25 two loops and a trail ride. All vet checks in
camp. I have switched the order of the first two loops, so you do Rocky
Canyon second . There is some repeat trail for the 75s, but no repeat
loops.

We have people coming in early, so if you come tomorrow, you will have
company at ride camp. I'll be out tomorrow briefly, will set up shop Friday
morning. You can sign in Friday after 2 or so, vetting should start around
3.

***There will not be Port-A-Potties before Friday morning and horse water
will not arrive before Friday afternoon.***

Don't forget to wear purple, I've got a great award for the Best Dressed
Purple Passion Rider this year!

Did I mention that I love My Kid to pieces...and My Pseudo Niece too? These
awesome young people are the true future of our sport, and reading this
article nearly put me in tears because I was there for those times when Jess
finished her first 100 at Klickitat Trek, 3 a.m. and only weighed in for
Best Condition because DeWayne Brown gently guided her to the scales when
she was bound and determined to go straight to bed...I was there when she
finished at 5:15 a.m. at the Twenty Mule Team ride in CA. I was nearly
hysterical because I knew where she SHOULD have been at that time of
day...because she had asked me to pull 18 miles earlier and I told her,
nicely as possible that we had driven 1300 miles ONE WAY for her to do this
ride, her horse was doing fine and really, so was she...I put more clothes
on her, gave her a hug and sent her on her way. Boy was she furious at me! I
told her she'd never forgive me if I let her pull like that. She told
me...much later, that I was right and
thanked me for sending her on.

These awesome Kids give me inspiration and make me know my life has purpose.

Thank you Ms. Langston for doing this interview, you did a wonderful job.

Sincerely,
VPEM (Very Pround Endurance Mom),

Ditto Pam's comments. I've driven my trailer across Texas, NM,
Utah, AZ, WY, ID, WA, OR and CA. The only place I've ever been
stopped was in CA (both ways and all 4 times I've been past). They
checked hay (took it) and checked the horse papers as well as my
vehicle registration. None of the other places ever stop you and
I've had the same experience pulling into the weigh stations....they
look at you like you're nuts.

brand inspection. We only get a Coggins and health certificate to
travel out of state.

Another question. Are brand inspections separate from or a part of your
health certificate? If they are not I don't think I've been doing that the
last 3
years. Thanks,

I can't speak for other states and I am NOT an expert on this subject. In
Idaho, you are required by law to have a brand inspection on your horse.
You can get it for a year or a lifetime. It basically is proof of
ownership. Your horse does not have to have a brand to obtain the brand
inspection. They don't really require any particular proof of ownership at
the time you obtain the BI (or they didn't the last time I obtained one).
The brand inspector will issue a laminated brand inspection card on the
spot. Any Idaho peace officer can ask to see the BI card and can legally
confiscate your livestock if you cannot provide it. You do not have to have
a Coggins or health certificate to travel within Idaho of course. You do
not have to have a BI to obtain a Coggins or HC.

Last year, I had a horse shipped from Kansas to Idaho. She came via several
states, including Nevada. She did not have a BI to get *in* to the state.
I still have not obtained one on her, though will one of these days. The
law is very sporadically enforced but it is designed to give the owner some
kind of recourse if the horse is stolen. I suspect the laws are
sporadically enforced in other states, as well, EXCEPT getting in and out of
California.

I think your best bet is to carry the required paperwork and be prepared to
show it. You are better safe than sorry and if you aren't sure, pull into
the weigh stations. That being said, I think there are more than a few of
us living near the Idaho/Oregon border who routinely cross back and forth
without Coggins or a health certificate.

Great article Jessica and Mariah...a nice overview of the sport that
non-horsey people can understand!

I'm emailing the article to several friends and family members who are
not quite sure what the sport is all about - some of whom think we're
nuts in their books for being involved in it! I'm not sure that this
will put us into the "sane" category, but they will at least have an
idea of what our passion is all about! <g>

I'm also printing a copy for my junior students who are interested in
getting involved...it's a nice look at the sport from a young person's
perspective. It speaks a lot for the quality of the young people who
are involved!

we have brand inspections done here on our horses before they leave the
State, usually buy a lifetime inspection permit for $20.00 which is not
that expensive, it's good for as long as you own the horse. our local
inspector charges an additional $10.00 for coming out.

Thanks so much to all the help and management that
put Purple Passion this year! Thanks to the private
land owners from Saud and I.
Hope you got a bargain price on the paint used for
all that trail marking. We had not trouble at all
following your directions and the markers.
Could not have asked for nicer weather, there was a
nice breeze up on the ridges. Plenty of water even for
us slow pokes. Lots of wonderful grass for my hungry
hard working Saud on his first 75 mile endurance ride.
My dear Darlene came all that way to "crew" for us
(from near Portland to near Boise) then when Lee asked
her to ride her nice red horse Darlene was flattered
and did leave it up to me!
Take a NOTE here to parents who endurance ride and
bring the "children" along. The little buggers grow up
and just may become ENDURANCE JUNKIES. Seems to run in
the family. Jessica called to congratulate me tonight.
So there are three generations of us lost to this
addiction in this family.
We had a wonderful spring day in the Idaho sunshine.
Great to see so many of our endurance "family" again
for this new season.
   Thanks again Pam and crew!
See some of you this coming weekend at Prineville,
different horse same addition!
   PJ & Saud

I think I have this disease!!
I've got it, too! The endurance strain of virus!

    Horse Hair: Potentially Dangerous!!!

In a press release today, the National Institute of Health has announced
the discovery of a potentially dangerous substance in the hair of horses.

This substance, called amo-bacter equuii has been linked with the
following symptoms in female humans:

    Reluctance to cook
    Reluctance to perform housework
Reluctance to wear anything but boots
Reluctance to work except in support of a horse
Physical craving for contact with horses (may be an addiction)

Beware: If you come in contact with a female human affected by this
substance, be prepared to talk about horses for hours on end. Be prepared to
empty your wallet to pay for show or endurance ride entries. This has been a
public service announcement.

Oh my gosh, I had SOOOO much fun riding w/my mom!! GAWD I'm such a junkie...is
there a support group for people like me?
I really really did go to PP just to crew for my mom on Saud's first 75 and when
Lee asked me if I wanted to ride her incredible horse, Kam, I told her I had to
ask my mommy, cause I really did come to crew for her. I didn't bring my saddle,
my helmet, NOTHING! Well, ok, I admit it, I brought a pair of riding tights and
my Ariats ;-).

The weather was so beautiful, just ask my burnt lips! Tiffany and Lee were great
crew for my mom and I! Saud and Kam were very suited to one another in
pacing...oh man it was such fun! Then after finishing at about 7 p.m. I got in
my car, drove home, napped a couple of hours and went riding on the new boy, Mo,
and boy did he let me know I had been hit by a mack truck!! Mo is Mo everything,
MoBucking, MoBetter, Mo((*^^%, MoCute, MOBAD!!!

I'm to bed early tonight, will catch up tomorrow, sorry I've been incommunicado,
I had an addiction to feed!!

Twenty some on the 25 with only 1 or 2 pulls. No treatments in spite of the

This is hard for me to do, but I have finally decided that the horse I bought
for endurance is not suited to me. He is a love, 14.2=14.3 hands, chestnut 10
year old with lots of lsd miles. Loves to go down the trails and can really
move out. My problem is I can no longer post, and he needs someone who can.
Loads, shoes without a problem. He drinks and eats on trail and is a happy
horse. Crosses moving water, but prefers another horse to lead at this point,
but willing to try anything. Very brave, rarely spooks and is not a bolter. He
was bred by Howard Kale and is pretty enough to show, but really does not like
arena work. His name is Nariodi, reg. #0607032. By Nariadni out of HK Aida (a
Muscat daughter and old line Crabbet on moma's side). I think he would be
suitable for an intermediate rider or an experienced junior. Right now he is
fat and out of shape, but has lots of base so should condition quickly.
Chestnut, three socks and a narrow blaze and a face like his daddy's. My price
is $1800 FIRM. I only want him going to an endurance family or a trail riding
family. We're located north of Spokane.

Thanks, Steph. I'm going to try and find some more rocks, though, just for you!

Heidi and Mary finished the 75 shortly after 9, so we had 100% completion on the
75, which is fabulous! As Steph said, two pulls on the 50, one lameness at
completion and one face plant early on, rider option. One pull on the 25,
lameness. NO METABOLIC PULLS and no treatment!

Sarah Metcalf and Olin Balch did a fabulous job, helped by the equally capable
Robin from Idaho Equine.

One thing you have to wonder after managing a one day ride, is how in the HELL
do people manage multidays!

Pam--exhausted, sunburned and wondering YET AGAIN what possesses people to get
involved in endurance . . .

Yes, a great ride! Good footing, plenty of interesting trail winding along
the ridge tops and along the creek, some decent hills. One of my favorites.
And of course every award was purple. Thanks Pam! Keep it up -

Probably because she just finished the Purple Passion 75 on Lee Dower's
horse within the last few hours. She did the whole ride with her mom!

It was a great ride. 15 on the 75--no pulls, but 2 (Heidi and Mary) were
still out at the dinner/awards. Pat Murray and Martha McMurray tied for
first on the 75. Carol Giles got BC and high vet. Thirtysome on the 50
with only 2 pulls. Leighsa R. won first place, high vet, and BC on the 50.
Twenty some on the 25 with only 1 or 2 pulls. No treatments in spite of the
hot weather! Vets and ride management did a great job! Thanks!

I picked up the May issue of NW Horse Source and there is a great article by
Scot Hanson on his safety on the Trails clinics. Just thought I would remind
everyone that Lacamas Trail & Distance Riders will be watching his video on
Monday, May 10th in Olympia, WA at M&M Stables, 6 PM. The video is really good
at demonstrating the maneuvers he teaches to stay on the defensive out on the
trails. Unlike most trail riders, most of us are quite capable of galloping off
if we feel threatened, but I have to agree with Scot in that sometimes that may
not be the safest choice. The trail may not be conducive to just galloping off.
What if you're on narrow winding trail and you go galloping off into a family of
hikers, can you safely stop on a dime? Plus, what do you do when you go back to
your trailer? If you decide to carry a weapon, do you really understand all the
consequences of that? The video is FREE and up to 10 people can practice in
Penny's covered arena the maneuvers on the video. Please RSVP is you plan on
attending or need directions. Later,

The AERC Board in its conference call this coming Monday night, will probably
vote on the LD BC issue. Because of an email sent by Melissa Ripley (who
opposes this issue) to the west region and southwest region riders and ride
managers & vets, a great number of emails are going directly to the AERC office
regarding this issue. In these regions the ride managers and some vets seem
very opposed to having the BC in an LD ride judged the same as in any other AERC
distance. (With top ten being the horses judged for BC.)

Since PNER judges LD BC the same as for any other distance, I would like riders
from this region to send emails indicating your support or opposition to this
issue. Please send them to the following email address: kathleen@...
. If your email is rejected, please resend as the mailbox is being bombarded
with emails on this issue and may be full. In addition, if you could cc: Bob
Morris and myself in those emails, we would have a first hand idea of the
feelings in this region. Thank you all in advance for your interest and input.

Terre,
Yes I did see that great picture. Great ride! I highly recommend it next
year to all south of the border PNER members. Senora Classic was at the
Summerland fairgrounds with a huge sand arena for vetting, a log clubhouse
type building for the wonderful catered dinner, and burgers and fruit served
all day ride day to the riders and helpers. Trail was beautiful and vetting
good.
