Connie and Sue:

Since I'm not on the FC list, keep me informed as to your plans! By the way, I
did get out for a short ride after all on Sunday. It seems that if I ride
properly, there is little or no stress on the area of the stress fracture.
Posting from the thighs, feet light in the stirrup with heels down; I could have
worn my brace! Am I crazy? It sure felt wonderful to be on my horse again.
Sorry I missed your ride though. I was afraid I'd hold you back.

Hi all,

I tried this once before but I must've pushed the wrong button and my message is
in somebody elses cyberspace. Anyway...

Somewhere around 1984, my little kid pestered me into getting a horse. She was
6 and we lived on 11 acres and I had a pretty decent job at the post office so..
why not?

I talked to my coworker, who had just returned from maternity leave after having
her first child, Nathan. She seemed to know quite abit about horses and she was
friendly and helpful- so she and her husband helped me find Ginger, our first
horse. This coworker, Darla Westlake, has taught me most of the things I know
about horses and many things about parenting too. THANKS!

After a short while I realized that you need several horses, and so I built
up my herd. Terry, Darla's husband had recently quit working at Weyerhauser and
started shoeing horses. He noticed that I wore out shoes faster than just about
anybody he worked for- and mentioned this thing that he and his wife enjoy-
endurance riding.

Here I found a wonderful family----Dave Westlake, Bonnie Moore, Ann & Larry
Eades,
Jo Calver, Heidi Smith, The Tribbey's, the Behee's, the Hollander's, the
Paulo's,
Mark & Arleen and many others who taught me tons!!!!!

There were also new people like Susie Morrill, Eliza Erksine, Sue Summers,
Steph Teeter, Karen Steenhof, Pat Murray the Westergards and other
up-and-comers.

This was truly a wonderful place!

What I hope is that PNER will maintain that excitement for us and our horses.
Keep the friendly environment where we look for people who we know are there
if we need there help. Yes, some of us will go for more--Tevis, ROC,
internatinal or whereever... but PNER should always be there for the fun!!!

If I can help--let me know,

Arne Smith

Hi PNER friends,
Darlene Anderson here. I just wanted to acknowledge that the Y2K endurance
season is nearly here.
The Fish Creek Endurance Team had it's annual pre-season meeting to vote in a
new team leader and look at our goals for next season.
I'm happy (read: exstatic!) to announce that Dawn Sanchez was overwhelmingly
voted in as the Y2K Fish Creek Endurance Team Leader. I couldn't be handing the
"reins" over to a more dedicated, loyal, inspirational, team member!
Congratulations Dawn!

I fall into that nurse category also! I've been working in various operating
rooms around the country since 1971...the last 20 years have been mostly open
heart and neurosurgery, with a sabbatical to pre-op holding for a little
while. I recently left the hospital (only working there per diem 1 day a pay
period now) and took a position at the (Everett Clinic) Kemp Surgery
Center. I
work 2-12 hours shifts there on Tuesdays and Thursdays...which gives me every
Friday thru Monday off if I choose. I had to wait for 6 months last year for
them to get the position requested and approved and started working there in
July. I had been working there one day a week per diem so I was already
pretty
acclimated. I'm excited about having those hours this year since we'll be
able
to attend more rides.

Short bio...

Steve and I have a small barn in Marysville where we have owned and boarded
horses for about 16 years, during which time I was an enthusiastic 4H mother
and leader for about 4 years (my son is now 26,) took lessons myself for 8-10
years, entered a few dressage shows (only to find out that I hated showing
-- 5
minutes in front of a judge so they can tell you everything you did wrong --
but I loved the classical training of the horse,) ran some dressage shows
for a
couple of years, then started preaching my "dressage for the masses" ideals.
During this time I also puttered around on the trails behind our place and at
some poker rides in the area. About 5 years ago I started teaching classical
basics (mainly to my guinea pig family and friends) and then advanced to the
real stuff (the people willing to pay for my instruction ;-)) -- and was
fortunate enough to have some awesome trainers and mentors to learn from. I
recently became certified thru ARICP in Dressage L1 and Recreational Riding
L2. I have become somewhat subspecialized in teaching classical basics
(balanced riding), horsemanship, and trail techniques to beginner (or
returnee)
adults and kids, and teaching balanced riding and classical dressage horse
training to those interested or involved in competitive trail or endurance.

Steve works as a regional sales rep for a company that makes printing press
equipment. The company he works for (located in Chicago) was just bought by a
company in Sassenberg, Germany and they want to retain the US sales force (2
guys.) So it looks like I'll get a trip to Germany and Holland fairly soon!
<bg>

About 2 years ago I hooked up with Ridecamp to learn more about trail safety,
lameness, nutrition, etc. and fairly quickly got hooked on the concept of
endurance riding. With a couple of enthusiastic students in tow, I decided to
get more involved...we gradually acquired the necessary "stuff" (ie something
other than a dressage saddle and a french link snaffle bit) and started a
conditioning program for our horses. At this point we didn't have one lick of
camping stuff and the horses had never been away from home overnight -- AND I
had this very inconvenient *other* job that required my presence each and
every
Friday and Monday. All of this made riding in competitions nearly impossible
until I got the new job that gives me every Monday and Friday off -- and, of
course, a ton gear and tack to outfit (almost there) 3 horses so far. Also
bought another horse this summer, a green 9yo CMK gelding, who should be
entering some LD competitions later this year with one of my students. We
(myself and a couple of students) were able to actually start competing last
September (did 2 LDs) and are planning on attending about 10 rides (+ or -)
this next season.

A side result of the enthusiasm and increased activity towards endurance
riding
is that my husband is actually talking seriously about competing also! (I've
been trying to get him interested in riding for years but competing in
dressage
was definitely not his thing!) He got his new padded tights and half chaps
for
Christmas and has even wore them out riding *without* jeans over the top! ;-)
He has decided that his main role will be as pit crew (and he'll be happy for
any tips and suggestions from experienced crew people...please email him at
sbrown.ryco@...) and he will probably ride a LD or two along the way.

Steve and I will be going to the PNER convention next week. We decided to fly
down and will be arriving in the area Friday morning but will have a rental
car
for the weekend. We will have all day Friday to drive around the area...any
suggestions of things we should see or do would be very welcomed.

Sue

I have noticed through the few years that I have been riding endurance that
there seems to be a lot of nurses in this sport. I run into another nurse just
about every ride I've been to. Or rather I discover that someone I had met
previously is a nurse and I didn't know before. Most nurses have told me that
endurance riding is a great antidote to the stress of caring for sick people.
This was brought to my mind again recently with Dawn Sanchez's introduction.
Now she is a doctor of psychology with cancer patients. Talk about stress
level!

So I'm wondering about other professions and/or reasons for the addictive nature
this sport holds for some. It is clear that for some, like nurses and doctors,
it can be a balance to the life and death drama that is played out everyday
before their very eyes. What about other professions? Is there a common
denominator here? I think in some cases the sport offers simply the excitement
of competition and stands alone, not necessarily as a balance to offset other
factors. In others, a sense of personal achievement, a form of recreation, an
opportunity to get away from the regular routine and rigors of a daily
lifestyle.

Any thoughts or discussion here? Why do you ride endurance?

For many, endurance riding isn't what you do, it defines who you are. I ride
for the bliss.

Hi everyone,

I've been on Ridecamp for several year now and I agree, it's getting big and
busy. I occassionally have to unsubscribe in order to allow time for other
things. So, I'm really pleased to see an attempt to bring just the PNER
people together. I found you while trying to read the scheadule for the up
coming convention, a task which I was never successful at, it just wouldn't
clear up enough to read.

Any how, I live in La Pine and have two horses that I am doing endurance on.
One mare and one gelding, both 6 years old. Even tough they have the same
daddy, they are soooo different, apparently taking after their moms. When
my mare goes to a ride, she just goes into a zone and goes with this big
trot. She feels like she could go forever. She tends to get a little
attention because her face is half grey and half solid, kinda like
Braveheart. The gelding on the other hand is mr curious. He is fun to
ride. He has to see every thing, constantly looking at things, trotting,
cantering and just a bit competitive. When he keeps himself in control and
knows where his feet are, he's awesome, but, he is capable of letting the
emotions get the best of him, then he doesn't have a clue where the feet are
and he's anything but fun.

When I first started them, I figured I'd put some conditioning on them and
sell one. My first thought was that I'd sell her. Now though, I suspect
that she's going to be the one that has the long distance ability. I think
he's going to make a super 50 miler, maybe even a consistent front runner by
the time he's 8. But I think she'll be the 100 miler. So, now, I'm
thinking I may keep them both if at all possible.

Well, stay warm and drive carefully when you come to the convention, there's
a bit of ice out there on those roads.

Rhonda's introduction story was so great . . . I loved it! I decided I needed
to put forth a better effort on my introduction! It's true that we don't really
know anything about our friends' horse experiences other than what we see in the
present. It is fun to see what has led each of us on this common path we have
chosen. We have all come from different beginnings and have arrived in the same
place.

I've been close to horses all my life; as long as I can remember being able to
sit on my neighbor's fence and pet a bay quarterhorse named Nickie. That's
where my mare got her name. I started riding Nickie at about six or seven years
old. My neighbor, Nell Raines (isn't that great?) was my mentor to the horse
world when I was a little girl. She also had a Tennessee Walker named Stardust,
an Arabian named Bambi and a Standard Trotter named Cheeta. I was never able to
ride Bambi because she was too spirited . . . it was Bambi's mystery and beauty
that inspired me to pursue arabians all my life. I got my first horse at age 17
having worked at a riding stable on Whidbey Island and being around horses
whenever possible during my girlhood and teenage years. At that time I was
offered my choice of that years' colts and fillys for a good price since I had
worked a couple of summers on the farm. I chose a bay half arab, half
quarterhorse which I named Babe. Babe was killed by !
a truck in just three short years after I got her, but she was the start of many
horses along the way which has now led me to my current herd consisting of my
half arab, Nickie; my bay half arab, half quarterhorse, Canyon (just like my
first horse, Babe), and my arab mare, Cassidy. Cassidy isn't like any other
horse I've ever had; she's in a league all her own. She will be the horse
you'll most likely see me riding this year. I've had horses for over 30 years
and am still learning about them. I have more or less learned by the seat of my
pants, literally, with a little horse sense thrown in. My friend and riding
partner, Sally Brogan, got me started in endurance after she moved to Idaho.
Unbeknownst to us, we had been riding ala endurance style all along but didn't
know about endurance riding. The only difference then was I rode everywhere
bareback, for hours at a time. If a ride was less than three hours, it wasn't
worth going! Sally was introduced to endurance ridi!
ng by the Southwest Endurance Riders in Idaho shortly after!
she moved to Eagle, Idaho. She called me up one day and said, "This is perfect
for you; you ought to try it." So I did and I loved it. The biggest difference
is that I had to learn how to post at the trot and use a saddle. I haven't been
consistent the past couple of years, but life seems more stable (get it?) now
and I'm looking forward to this year. Haven't really accomplished anything
earth-shattering yet but the endurance riding I have done has been fun and
satisfying. Nickie has taken me most of the way with a fair sprinkling of top
tens in 25s and 50s. The support of other riders, especially the local group,
Fish Creek Endurance Team, has been awesome. There's lots of good people out
there involved in the sport and plenty of commaraderie.

Looking forward to more posts and discussions.

Greetings from Arlington:

I'm signing on to Onelist! I also have a home account on AOL (kelhie2@...)
as well as this account at work, but since I'm online all day I generally see
work postings first. Actually pretty lazy about getting online at home.
Anyway, I'm here and hoping to have an ambitious year this season starting with
Home On The Range. Had a couple of pretty satisfying years in endurance a few
years back with my older mare, Nickie. Been on the sidelines for a couple of
years and last year dipped into it again completing five rides with my other two
mares. Looking forward to the list and getting acquainted with the endurance
community again.

Got a question to start out with, does anyone know where the trailhead access is
to the Weyerhauser property at Fall City? I'm looking for specific directions.

Thanks,

Joyce Kellenberger

Hi, My name is Dee Van Gilder. I live in North Central Oregon and have grown up
with horses. Showing was our thing when I was growing up, but then after
leaving home didn't show much. Endurance always interested me from the time I
heard of it, but never got to do alot of rides, mainly 1 or 2 a year. But it is
still my biggest interest as far as riding is concerned, just too many horses
to care for and not enough time, money to go on many rides. I was away from the
ranch for over 20 years and came back 6 years ago to help my mom withher
breeding program. So now when I get away to ride a ride it is on a young horse
and I am doing it for their training and my fun!
I am glad that there is a local list going now as ridecamp has too much mail for
me!!
I hope to meet some of you at the PNER convention.

Hi,
My name is Sue Nance and was a member of PNER a long time ago (1976-1990),
and now am getting back into things and will be renewing my membership. At
one time I helped put on the Santiam Cascade ride( when the Sweet Home
Timber Riders did it) and also put on the WoodAcre 50. I even got my husband
re-interested (is this a word?) in the sport. Alot of you know this guy-Gene
Nance.
He will be one of the ride Vets at the Prineville ride and will be the Head
Vet at Bandit Springs. Man, can you believe this turn around.
At this time we have three horses to get ready, we'll see if this comes
about, but at least it will be fun trying. I am really excited to see the
old riders I used to know and meet the new ones that I don't know.

Hi -- I am Linda Harbin. I have been a member of PNER for about 6 or 7
years but have not been very active for the past 3 years. I rode my first
25 miler in 1995. My horse Vodka and I got an award for 6th place Sr.
Rookie Rider/Horse for that year. The next year I rode several 50 milers.
Then I got the terrible bug to finish my schooling so I devoted the next
several years studying and didn't do much riding. Well, this past December
I graduated with my BS, so now I am ready to start conditioning again and
get some rides in this season!

I am planning on going to Convention so hope to see lots of you there!

I am a former retired endurance rider who still rides the trails in
spirit even though the body is no longer willing. Many of the places
that I still enjoy riding today were sites of former endurance rides
that I went on. I competed on 50s in the eighties. Endurance has come
a long ways since those days and the rides are so much bigger today.
Many of the things that I learned from endurance riding still form the
way I ride, train, condition and feed my horse today. Currently I have
two gaited horses which I do ride with a Desoto enduranace saddle.

Introduction...
I live in the NW region, in Newberg, Oregon and have been competing in
endurance or the past four years or so.

I have three horses, my main endurance mount Jay, a Bask bred gelding, who
just loves this sport. He's a wonderful confident horse and a great deal of
fun to ride. In addition to Jay, I bought a new prospect this past summer,
an unstarted four year old stallion. His name is BRR Count Lou aka Saber.
He is 100% CMK and bred very closely to the Tevis Cup winner this year BRR
Arbur Lights. You won't see much of him on the trails this year, we have a
few years of LSD to do before that, but I will bring him to the rides to
socialize him. My third horse is an AraAppaloosa yearling stud colt I
purchased toward the end of summer from Mtn Mist Appaloosas. He's 5/8th
Arabian. He is loudly colored and tall. His body type is more TB than
Arabian, although he has a very nice dishy Arabian face.

I am going PNER convention, hope to see some of you there.

Hi all:

My first introduction to Endurance was in 1997. After relocating to Idaho,
with a swaybacked old Missouri Foxtrotter mare, I quckly found my riding
partners disappearing. About that time Just Horses had an article about
endurance, and I remember thinking that it sounded like fun. So, several
weeks later, I loaded Star in the trailer and headed for Dianondfield Jack,
without a clue about what I was getting into. We didn't complete that first
attempt, and returned home quite humbled, but determined that this was
something we could do. The thing that stands out in my mind from that ride,
was the way everyone made us feel welcome, and the time they took to offer
advice and help. Two weeks later, we headed for Old Selam, a little wiser,
and very determined. Star easily cruised to her 1st LD completion, and when
we were vetting out the head vet commented that she could have easily done a
50 that day. I was hooked.

The 1998 season began with high hopes of moving to 50's, but Murphy raised
his ugly head, and the week before our first ride Star fractured a sesamoid.
My training partner quite graciously offered me her Arabian mare, SR Shabu,
for the season (her first mistake <g>). The transition from my extremely
smooth and bulletproof MFT to Bu was quite interesting, and the first six
weeks, there was more than one occasion I picked myself off the ground. But
then the magic kicked in, the bond formed, Bu & I began to truly mesh as a
team and I made the commitment to buy her. And the real learning experience
began. Then I got dumb and 6 broken ribs followed by a fractured knee cap
ended the season for us.

1999 began with major drugs to get me through the first couple of rides
until the knee started to strengthen, Star completed her first 50 at Purple
Passion, and Bu had me scrambling to keep up with her. My education shifted
into high gear, and my two "girls" consitently blew right by my
expectations. Star returned to Diamondfield and completed the 50, and Bu
gave me an entire season of amazement. With the help of a lot of new
friends, we all 3 managed to complete our 1st full season, sound, healthy
and looking forward to 2000.

Dawn Sanchez here..........

In 1995, I started riding endurance (SE region) two months after getting
on a "real" horse for the first time in my life--a green rider on a green
horse was not a pretty sight. My first ride was a 25 at Big South Fork.
When I was done I said, "Is that all?!" and did 50's from then on. I
used to think if I didn't scream once during a training ride I wasn't
having any fun (can you say adrenaline junky?). I have since changed my
mind after after christening the trail with my butt for a year, then
simultaneously breaking my leg and ankle. In the 1997 season my now
husband, Roger Barrett (aka Prince Redneck), decided to put me on his
pride and joy, Dance-On-Air. He figured if I could stay on, no one could
beat me--he was right. I stayed on and kicked butt. Roger and I had a
good system--he would condition more than I, then put me on at a race and
the horse would burst out like a ROCKET (Roger weighs about twice as much
as I do). We had four horses we worked with in TN.

In June of '98, I moved to Seattle without my horses or husband--didn't
ride for 8 months! In Feb 1999, I hooked-up with the SRS gang (Donnie,
Patty, and Darlene) and became a member of the FCET. Boy did my learning
curve take a jump during the 1999 season. We sold all but one horse and
Roger moved himself and Dancer to join me as a PNER in Aug '99. Dancer
lives at SRS and Roger commutes to his pilot job in TN. My preference is
to ride long and fast, but I now have many speeds at which I feel
comfortable. I'm now the horseless hobo-rider who rides just about any
horse, any distance. I'm hoping to someday take a leap from domestic to
international endurance riding--just have to win the lottery, get an
awesome horse, take more lessons, and obtain more experience--NO PROBLEM.

Outside of endurance I'm a clinical health psychologist. I work at the
VAMC, Seattle, on the bone marrow unit. All my patients have cancer of
one form or another.

See you all on the trail!

Dawn

I grew up in Boulder, CO but spent summers at my Grandparents farm in
Iowa. Grandpa kept cattle, & thought it might be handy if I were able
to help with the roundups. Topsy, was a small, quick, sorrel mare who
became my friend, & taught me everything about staying in a saddle.
Grandpa’s instructions were to go to the rear of the herd, start them
moving, & hang on. Topsy did the rest. When I arrived each summer, we’d
head out in the pickup bouncing over hill & dale until we spotted the
small horse herd. I’d jump out & call for her. Her ears would come up
& she would gallop up to me. The rest of the year if Grandpa wanted
her, he’d have to run her into the corrals. We traveled miles of the
Iowa countryside together for years, until I “grew up”, & got married.

With the demands of family, horses took a back seat for almost 20
years. Then, Butch & I purchased the “Homestead”. We were working on
our fence, when two riders came up the hill on Arabians. One thing led
to another & instead of a shop, Butch ended up building a barn & I
bought Alexi. Butch started horse hunting, & bought Jas. (We’d also
purchased Alexi’s little brother Khaz, when he was 6 mo.) We met people
involved with CT, & started riding competitively spring of 93. There,
we met Liz Dale, & Don & Sandy Skinner on the trails. At the end of
rides we compared notes & discovered that we had all been marked down
for the same thing…. “Traveling too fast”. Our friends went to
endurance, & when our mares were old enough, we did too. We didn’t look
back, but still enjoy riding CT for conditioning, & fun. (It gives us a

greater appreciation for Vet Checks, & Pit Crew!

Bully Wully 94, at Jerry Washburns suggestion we volunteered to do P&R.
We met Dory, & a great bunch of people who rode with? her ? & were
adopted! Animal House 95, was my first attempt at endurance. 50 miles
that became 64, when I misunderstood a “in/out” sign, & went right back
“out” to do the 18 mile loop a g a i n. My first clue was when I found
my own glove. With the support & companionship of Barbara Harris (Over
the Rainbow) on the last 12 mile loop - we completed!

Butch & Khaz also used Animal House as their starting point. Don’t ask
Butch that story! :-)
The rides come & go, but the friends are a privilege to ride with.
May the trails last forever…
