For anyone interested in equine gifts for the holidays, I just added a page
on my website for my friend, Maggie Hall, who's a very talented artist.
Check out her custom brownbands, jewelry, photos and cards. I love the
browband she made for Mustang Lady!

Forwarded from another group (please don't reply to this email -- contact Valrey
at her email shown at the bottom)

Received this e-mail through the Oregon Horse Welfare Council from Julie
Zuver (jazuver@...). Wanted to forward in case someone would be
interested.

If anyone can give a home to three needy donkeys that would be awesome.
Their owners died in a plane crash and they need a place to go ASAP. I
cannot take them but I would be happy to pick them up in Roseburg area and
deliver them if someone else can give them a home. Thanks.

RJO Kourystal "Kruz" is for sale. I am very sad to do this, but she does not
seem to be the horse for me. She is 14.2 hands tall about 900 lbs 13 year old
grey mare. Has been on the endurance circuit before. Last ride was back in 2004.
Since then she has been only in the arena. She is too spooky for me and herd
bound. I do not have the time it will take to break her of these to habits, as I
have two small boys to look after as well.
She has the bloodlines of Marhaba and Abu Farwa on her sire's side. She is UTD
on everything. She is barefoot with a strong hoof. Very correct confirmation.
She will come right up to you and put her head in the halter, and is great on
the ground. Needs some major time under saddle for reminders. Asking $1600 firm.

I'd like to add to what Carol just said. PacNorth is truly the envy in the
international community and the North American championships where you have Pac
North, Pac South, Mtn., Central, and East competing. At every PanAm or No.
American championship we've heard over the years how envious other teams are of
our cohesiveness and unity of PacNorth!! We know how to put efforts together to
make things happen, and we've never had any 'in-fighting' amongst the group,
whether it be riders, support crews, vets, or whoever. Often times members from
other teams will come to our camp and hang out. It is truly a remarkable team
spirit we have here in the Northwest from ALL PNER members!! And that includes
our members from Mtn. zone, and our Canadian P-NER members!! (We know you can't
help it that the line is drawn to exclude you from Pac North. You are still part
of US!!)

So to all who support PacNorth, including riders as Carol said, wear this badge
of honor proudly!! Together we ALL make it happen!!

I would also like to thank everyone who support those of us who ride for
PacNorth. At Kentucky, the Chef for the team - Tony Benedetti - did a small
ceremony honoring some of the people who have donated in some measure over the
past few years to the efforts of the team. It was actually pretty amazing to
hear all the names. For example (and this is in no way meant to be a complete
list): Charleen Farrell and her family, Carlene Benson, and Wendy Dunbar who put
such tremendous effort into making the Oregon 100 a great ride, Sue Summers for
always donating best condition awards, Healthy as a Horse and Gallops Saddlery
who donate a lot of our awards, John and Bonnie Rosen who donate in a variety of
ways, Drs. Jen, Foss, Cassie, Timmons and Sharpnick who donate their time to
come and vet the Oregon 100, and Sharon and Gordon Westerguard for starting the
original fundraising efforts and for helping whenever and whereever they can.
The one group who we really weren't able to thank was all the riders of PNER who
support the Oregon 100 and PacNorth in one way or another. Yet, without your
support PacNorth would not be the envy of every other region in the U.S. PNER
riders are the TOPS! Thank you.

"I do not envy those whose introduction to nature was lush meadows, lakes,
and swamps where life abounds. The desert hills of Yakima had a poverty that
sharpened perception. Even a minute violet quickens the heart when one has
walked far or climbed high to find it. Where nature is more bountiful, even
the tender bitterroot might go unnoticed. Yet when a lone plant is seen in
bloom on scabland between batches of bunchgrass and sage, it can transform
the spot as completely as a whole bank of flowers could do in such a lush

Time is just "trotting away" from us this month. The convention plans and
timing of speakers are really coming together.

We have added a special discussion panel on Friday afternoon. Dr Olin
Balch will be presenting the AERC Research Summit findings. This pertains to
the article in the AERC Endurance News, October 2009 issue on pages 25-27.

There were four specific recommendations to make the sport safer for our
horses. Some are quite controversial. Dr Olin will present the AERC data
and present the four findings. There will be a panel of six members,
riders, ride manager and ride veterinarians to discuss the findings and
recommendations.

This discussion is very important and will help shape the future of PNER
and AERC. Attendees will be allowed to ask questions and make
recommendations as well.

Our agenda on Friday, January 22 is as follows:
1:00 to 3:00 Blake Brown (more info to come at another posting)
3:00 to 4:00 Board Meeting
4:00 to 6:00 AERC Research Findings - Disease and Death of Endurance Horses
6:30 to 7:30 Ride Manager Meeting
6:30 to 8:30 Continuing Education for Veterinarians - Blake Brown
6:30 to 8:00 Cash Bar and Social
8:00 to 10:00 - Friday Awards (Still working on the list)

Saturday, January 23, I'm still working on the times:
Arabian Silk Documentary 8:00 in the morning until 9:30
Peggy Cummings 10:30 (more info to come at another posting)

Hello to all pner riders/supporters. I want to thank all of you who make it
possible for the few of us who get to represent pacnorth at events like the
naec. It was very exciting to be riding for the pacnorth squad in kentucky.
Our group of horses and riders were really a great group of talented
athletes. I really appreciate all the work that is put in by so many at
events like the oregon 100, which helped to fund our effort. Unfortunately,
we didn't medal this time, but it wasn't for lack of effort. The day proved
to be challenging in many ways, and we should be proud of the riders who did
finish(and those of us who didn't/myself included!) as I think we
represented our region well. my horse "Big Easy" and I are looking forward
to a break this winter to gather our thoughts and decide on the next
challenges and goals for 2010, and hopefully riding for pacnorth in the
future. best wishes, and safe riding to all.. see you on the trails in 2010.
Thank You all so much!!!!! Gabrielle Mann

The Pacific Crest Trail Association (PCTA) is holding their annual photo
contest for pictures from the trail. Go to their website
http://www.pcta.org/ and click on "What's New?" link for the contest rules.
The PCTA is very stock (or in this case, 'Equestrian') friendly - they even
include specific and interesting info for us in their FAQ's. BCHW, BCHC &
BCHO members help out with many work parties every year and I was told that
they need more photos of Equestrian use on the trail. This is a wonderful
trail organization to join and support and get those pictures entered!
Lori

PACIFIC CREST TRAIL ASSOCIATION

Founded
The Pacific Trail Association (PCTA) was formed in 1977 as a natural
outgrowth and merger of many smaller organizations dating back to the 1930s,
all of which advocated and worked diligently to create one continuous scenic
trail along the crest of the major mountain ranges of the Pacific rim from
Mexico to Canada.

Mission
The mission of the Pacific Crest Trail Association is to protect, preserve
and promote the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail as an internationally
significant resource for the enjoyment of hikers and equestrians, and for
the value that wild and scenic lands provide to all people.

The association strives to achieve this mission by promoting the PCT as a
unique educational and recreational treasure and one of the finest trails
anywhere in the world. The association also provides a broad range of
services to its members, serves as a communications link among users and
land management agencies, and assists the USDA Forest Service as well as
other agencies in the maintenance, restoration and protection of the PCT.

I have started to post the final standings for the year. I NOT posted ALL of
the standings (for all of the awards... some of the more "labor intensive"
awards will be posted as they are finished.) Again, more award categories will
follow, so don't panic! If you see "Standings Final at Convention," that means
I'm done running the final tally on that award... unless somebody sends me a

Lois Fox and Darlene have been to see him and maybe can add more. But I got a
text message from Max today that they finally ruled out H1N1 and discovered, via
an MRI, that he had a staff infection around his spinal column. (it's anyone's
guess how that came to be!) They operated and removed infection, but he will
have to have a repeat MRI before they let him go home in a few days. He and
Lisa have been through quite an ordeal. Lisa has not been able to keep up with
phone calls or emails so don't take it personal if you have not heard back from

Teddy at Running Bear has really nice ones that work! They are fairly cheap
too. Lots of fun colors.

Hey y'all,

I know a lot of you but just got on this email group, I'm Lissa Wilberger
(recently changed from Fiedler!). I haven't actually gotten around to changing
my name in the PNER records since I'm afraid of it being a pain (like changing
it at school was!). I'm currently in my 2nd year of vet school at OSU CVM.
It's hard but a blast. Hasbro (BRR Far Dancer) is actually my horse, even
though my mom (Becky Fiedler) has been riding him a lot while I'm in school.
He's my pride and joy as well as my sister's doberman Justin (you might have
seen him at some rides). He loves to run with our horses, though he's banned
from doing an endurance ride - to his dismay! :)

I'm actually looking for a way to contact Lou and Hannah Hollander. I'm
attempting to gather information for the PNER scholarship essay.

Thanks!

Lissa

Hello, I did quite a bit of research on this and asked two veterinarians. One
vet said any mid range Littman will do-- no need to get a really expensive one.
Then I read some material and chatted with him about the thickness of the walls
of the tubing and the length of the tubing.... thicker walls can mask wind
sounds in getting a heart beat --- since we mostly do this in outside conditions
this seemed important.

So, after all that research I sprang for a $20 Sprague Rappaport-Type
Stethoscope that has two bells, diaphragms, two chest pieces; one for small and
one for large animals. It is pretty pink (frosted magenta so I can tell it from
green forest stuff if I drop it!) and is the heavy-walled tubing...

Found it and bought it on Ebay did I say $20???)and it works wonderfully--- I
keep it my little participation bag from Bandit Springs to keep it clean and
ready to use-- and it can go with me on a ride... so I can use it for
conditioning etc. ( I can also use it on my cats!).

Hope this help!

Happy Trails,
Eileen Reilich

Kind of a long shot, but a friend sold me the center-fire cinching system from
Sportack (she ordered it 6 months ago and decided to keep the original rigging
on her saddle) and the 2 girths are too big for my horse (Imus saddle with
dropped rigging)

Anyone here interested? The link:

Hello again! Anyone have a preference for stethoscopes that are better at
hearing your horsie's heart? Are the middle range priced ones acceptable?

Thanks,

"I do not envy those whose introduction to nature was lush meadows, lakes,
and swamps where life abounds. The desert hills of Yakima had a poverty that
sharpened perception. Even a minute violet quickens the heart when one has
walked far or climbed high to find it. Where nature is more bountiful, even
the tender bitterroot might go unnoticed. Yet when a lone plant is seen in
bloom on scabland between batches of bunchgrass and sage, it can transform
the spot as completely as a whole bank of flowers could do in such a lush
environment. It is the old relationship between scarcity and value. These
are the botanical lessons of the desert which the foothills of Yakima taught
me."
