Ever Rope a Deer?
>
>
>
> I had this idea that I was going to rope a deer, put it in a stall,
feed it up on corn for a couple of weeks, then kill it and eat it.
The first step in this adventure was getting a deer. I figured that
since they congregated at my cattle feeder and do not seem to have
much fear of me when we are there (a bold one will sometimes come
right up and sniff at the bags of feed while I am in the back of the
truck not 4 feet away) that it should not be difficult to rope one,
get up to it and toss a bag over its head (to calm it down) then hog
tie it and transport it home. I filled the cattle feeder then hid
down at the end with my rope.
>
> The cattle, who had seen the roping thing before, stayed well back.
They were not having any of it. After about 20 minutes my deer showed
up. 3 of them. I picked out a likely looking one, stepped out from
the end of the feeder, and threw my rope. The deer just stood there
and stared at me. I wrapped the rope around my waist and twisted the
end so I would have a good hold. The deer still just stood and stared
at me, but you could tell it was mildly concerned about the whole
rope situation. I took a step towards it. It took a step away. I put
a little tension on the rope and received an education.
>
> The first thing that I learned is that while a deer may just stand
there looking at you funny while you rope it, they are spurred to
action when you start pulling on that rope. That deer EXPLODED.
>
> The second thing I learned is that, pound for pound, a deer is a
LOT stronger than a cow or a colt. A cow or a colt in that weight
range I could fight down with a rope with some dignity. A deer, no
chance. That thing ran and bucked and twisted and pulled. There was
no controlling it and certainly no getting close to it. As it jerked
me off my feet and started dragging me across the ground, it occurred
to me that having a deer on a rope was not nearly as good an idea as
I originally imagined. The only up side is that they do not have as
much stamina as many animals.
>
> A brief 10 minutes later, it was tired and not nearly as quick to
jerk me off my feet and drag me when I managed to get up. It took me
a few minutes to realize this, since I was mostly blinded by the
blood flowing out of the big gash in my head. At that point I had
lost my taste for corn-fed venison. I just wanted to get that devil
creature off the end of that rope. I figured if I just let it go with
the rope hanging around its neck, it would likely die slow and
painfully somewhere. At the time, there was no love at all between me
and that deer. At that moment, I hated the thing and I would venture
a guess that the feeling was mutual.
>
> Despite the gash in my head and the several large knots where I had
cleverly arrested the deer's momentum by bracing my head against
various large rocks as it dragged me across the ground, I could still
think clearly enough to recognize that there was a small chance that
I shared some tiny amount of responsibility for the situation we were
in, so I didn't want the deer to have to suffer a slow death. I
managed to get it lined up to back in between my truck and the
feeder. A little trap I had set beforehand kind of like a squeeze
chute. I got it to back in there and started moving up so I could get
my rope back.
>
> Did you know that deer bite? They do! I never in a million years
would have thought that a deer would bite somebody so I was very
surprised when I reached up there to grab that rope and the deer
grabbed hold of my wrist. Now, when a deer bites you, it is not like
being bit by a horse, where they just bite you and then let go. A
deer bites you and shakes its head. Almost like a pit bull. They bite
HARD and it hurts. The proper thing to do when a deer bites you is
probably to freeze and draw back slowly. I tried screaming and
shaking instead. My method was ineffective.
>
> It seems like the deer was biting and shaking for several minutes,
but it was likely only several seconds. I, being smarter than a deer
(though you may be questioning that claim by now) tricked it. While I
kept it busy tearing the bejesus out of my right arm, I reached up
with my left hand and pulled that rope loose.
>
> That was when I got my final lesson in deer behavior for the day.
Deer will strike at you with their front feet. They rear right up on
their back feet and strike right about head and shoulder level, and
their hooves are surprisingly sharp. I learned a long time ago that
when an animal like a horse strikes at you with their hooves and you
can't get away easily, the best thing to do is try to make a loud
noise, and make an aggressive move towards the animal. This will
usually cause them to back down a bit so you can escape. This was not
a horse. This was a deer, so obviously such trickery would not work.
>
> In the course of a millisecond I devised a different strategy. I
screamed like a woman and tried to turn and run. The reason I had
always been told NOT to try to turn and run from a horse that paws at
you is that the reason is a good chance that it will hit you in the
back of the head. Deer may not be so different from horses after all,
besides being twice as strong and three times as evil, because the
second I turned to run, it hit me right in the back of the head and
knocked me down.
>
> Now when a deer paws at you and knocks you down it does not
immediately leave. I suspect it does not recognize that the danger
has passed. What they do instead is paw your back and jump up and
down on you while you are laying there crying like a little girl and
covering your head. I finally managed to crawl under the truck and
the deer went away.
>
> Now for the local legend. I was pretty beat up. My scalp was split
open, I had several large goose eggs, my wrist was bleeding pretty
good and felt broken (it turned out to be just badly bruised) and my
back was bleeding in a few places, though my insulated canvas jacket
had protected me from most of the worst of it. I drove to the nearest
place, which was the co-op.
>
> I got out of the truck, covered in blood and dust and looking like
hell. The guy who ran the place saw me through the window and came
running out yelling "what happened?"
>
> I have never seen any law in the state of Kansas that would
prohibit an individual from roping a deer. I suspect that this is an
area that they have overlooked entirely. Knowing, as I do, the
lengths to which law enforcement personnel will go to exercise their
power, I was concerned that they may find a way to twist the existing
laws to paint my actions as criminal. I swear... not wanting to admit
that I had done something monumentally stupid played no part in my
response. I told him "I was attacked by a deer." I did not mention
that at the time I had a rope on it. The evidence was all over my
body. Deer prints on the back of my jacket where it had stomped all
over me and a large deer print on my face where it had struck me
there. I asked him to call somebody to come get me. I didn't think I
could make it home on my own. He did.
>
> Later that afternoon, a game warden showed up at my house and
wanted to know about the deer attack. Surprisingly, deer attacks are
a rare thing and wildlife and parks was interested in the event. I
tried to describe the attack as completely and accurately as I could.
I was filling the grain hopper and this deer came out of nowhere and
just started kicking the hell out of me and BIT me. It was obviously
rabid or insane or something. EVERYBODY for miles around knows about
the deer attack (the guy at the co-op has a big mouth).
>
> For several weeks people dragged their kids in the house when they
saw deer around and the local ranchers carried rifles when they
filled their feeders. I have told several people the story, but NEVER
anybody around here. I have to see these people every day, and as an
outsider, a "city folk", I have enough trouble fitting in without
them snickering behind my back and whispering "there is the dumb-ass
that tried to rope the deer."

My teenage daughter's wonderful Arabian gelding that she does OHSET with had a
trailer accident and cracked his shoulder bone. He will recover nicely in a few
months but is out for her OHSET season. (OHSET=Oregon High School Equestrian
Team) She needs to find a horse to lease for approx. 3 months. She does drill
team with flags and some other fun classes. She prefers Arabs, needs a horse
that neckreins easily, could easily do practice 2 nights a week 2 hours each
practice which is tons of trotting/cantering in an arena. Greenies won't work as
drill team is not for greenies. Many of you may know her as Amanda Watson (Andy)
who has done alot of 50s and a 100 miler as a junior on her wonderful older Arab
gelding. She is a very good rider, very kind, very soft with her hands and legs
but assertive and experienced enough for any fiesty Arab. She is the kid that
has helped me start many of my greenies and special rescue cases. She is
heartbroken that she cannot finish her OHSET meets without her horse but is open
to a free care lease with us paying all expenses and liability insurance if
needed. We have our horses on pasture 24/7 with walk in shelters. We feed
Eastern grass hay and give lots of love. Anyone out there that has a horse that
is standing around that needs a job for a few months? We are in the Portland
area. We can have your horse back in May fitter than it was in February.

Just to add to Darlene's post from the BOD mtg. Suzie Hayes made a proposal
to the Board that they recognize the 2-day Pioneer Cabin ride in Montana,
since the trail crosses into PNER territory. The motion passed, and we now
have a 2-day PNER Montana ride! Way to go, Suzie!

Below are a list of names of Mileage Certificates that I brought
home from Convention. If you want me to mail yours to you, please
email me privately, with your mailing address.

If I don't hear from you, I'll assume that you don't want Mileage
Certificates, and I will put you on the "opt out" list, which means
I will NOT print one for you next year. If you DO request your
certificate, I will keep you on the "print" list.

I'm trying to pare the list of Mileage Certificates printed down to
just the people who really want to have one. I like mine for
Fancy's scrapbook, but that's just me... You can have yours for
whatever reason, or you can skip the whole thing.

You've been duly notified.

The Pink Flamingo Website is now up and running! (That was a learning
experience.)

We loaded just about all the photos that my sister, Terri, took at the ride
so you should be able to find yourself in one of the photos. The PFC music
video should be uploaded next week some time so please check back later.

When we get closer to ride time, we should have the trail maps loaded too.

Check it out and let me know if something isn't working right.

(Make sure you include the word 'classic' in the web address or it goes to
some erotic website. Grreat. :-))

Off to shovel the driveway now,

Hi Have been ridding in a Specialized Saddle for two years. Had a treeless that
was causing loin rubbing and pressure on the withers. Went to the Specialized
and my mare hasn't had a sore back again. All A's on back and loins at rides.
Works for my wide flat backed mare as well as my youngster that's built like a
cat!!! I'd buy another one.

Hello! Good question!

I love my saddle, got it from Carol and Rick Brand. I'd been through 10
different endurance saddles before then, including treeless and paneled
saddles. Nothing beats a specialized! It has a very comfortable and secure
dressage style seat. I have ponied wild baby horses from an off-the-track
wild mare and never felt endangered. Spooks and bolts are harmless in the
saddle because I feel so centered. Not to mention, it is easily custom fit
to all horses (again props to the Brands, who are very nice to work with).

I am so glad to have discovered specialized, and will never have to saddle
shop again.

Laura

Thank You to all invalved for having the convention
at Pasco. The facilities were first rate with lots of
room for the trade show and all the programs including
the indoor areana. Watching the team roping on Friday
night was great fun and an added bonus since they had
nothing to do with the endurance but were having fun
with thier horses. Some of us had fun watching the
cowboys do what they so enjoy doing.
  ;)
I left Sunday after they opened the bridge to get
back to Hermiston since I was pulling a trailer that
is the way I was going. The roads were dicey getting
from Pasco to Hermiston with lots of the cars making
like they were hockey pucks.
Stayed in Hermiston Monday picking up more tire
chains, some new windshield wiper blades since the ice
biuld up in the windshield on the Sunday drive had
eatten one of my blades and made driving even more
interesting in the near white out conditions on ice
and snow. I know where everything is in Hermiston
since in years past 'we' have gone there for horse
shoe tournements and cribbage tournetments as well as
passing through there in route to Seattle where my
mother lived for years. Monday was one of those pretty
winter days since I had nowhere to be but where I was
at.
Tue morning the horses I was to haul back to Idaho
arrived right on time. Headed out and hit the Blues at
noon my time. Chained up, that was required for rigs
pulling a trailer and headed slowly over the Blues.
The roads were snow pack and I thought they were
better then many trips I have made over them in the
winter. Right on top we had a one hour (at least) stop
for a wreck ahead to be cleared. I checked the horses
who were eatting and standing quiet watched as most of
the drivers traveling with dogs had them out playing
while they waitted--I kicked back in the drivers seat
and read a book.
Coming off the Blues it started snowing and blowing
and from there it got into that THIS AINT THE FUN
part.
I did not take those chains off till I was into
Idaho and SHOULD have put them back on for the drive
though Boise on thier 8 lanes of ice as well as the
single lane traffic from Boise to Mt Home on ice and
snow but did not.
Long story SHORT it did not get any better but the
horses hauled well, the truck stayed the dirtest side
down and we made it home only taking twice as long on
the road as it took to get there. 13 hours of winter
driving is not something I would like to do again real
soon.
   PJ

Annual Stallion Showcase & Horse Sale on April 26, 2008. We are still
working out details now on what she will teach, but my concept is
have her tell others how to take better horse photos of their own
horses. So I will be adding her shortly to our schedule of events for
the day. And that is one less thing for me to do. I was thinking of
doing that clinic myself, but I managed to sweet talk her in to doing
it for me that way I can be working horses for the day and managing
the open house from horse back via radio if needed.

And I am getting in more entries all the time. I see a lot of need
for folks to sell their horses with only a $20 entry fee to me and no
sales comissions either if they sell their own horse private treaty.
So folks are deciding right now which horses they will bring if they
do not sell them before the event.

This open house already has 14 horse barns on board and we are not
even at February yet. That tells me we are going to have one of the
largest events ever which means more fun and more horses to look at
for the day. This event is always FREE for the audience to attend
too so please consider coming even if you do not have horses to sell.

This is such a laid back event but I am working on getting some nice
prizes for the Play Day Classes and Liberty Class too. This is not a
horse show or sales auction just an old fashioned horse fair and open
house so come as you are with your horses and play with us for the
day.

And now having three photographers there to take some nice shots of
your sales horses if you do not sell them at the event will help
exhibitors sell them later on. So please think about attending our
fun event. Thanks.

That event web site for more details, directions or to enter your
horses is http://www.spokanehorsesale.com

Hey Arne, et al,
Karol Bauldree is the new PNER secretary and I'm almost sure she hasn't had an
opportunity to type up all the minutes from the meetings this weekend.
Some things that were touched on, however, were the introductions of the new
board members, identifying the new "financial review committee" (formerly the
audit committee), the discussion to make the treasurer position a board position
(will help w/important banking decision on PNER's behalf), the discussed change
of making the PNER ride calendar coincide w/the AERC calender of Dec. 1 to Nov
30 (did not pass). There was the formation of an education committee, a new
scholarship committee, w/the approval of the new $1500 scholarship. The board
was informed that we need a new raffle person (anyone interested? Contact Susan
or Jannelle if so). The awards revisions were completed. The junior rep, Sirie
Neal, brought a brief report asking for the formation of a new award for those
"tweener" riders who don't quite fit in as juniors any longer, but aren't quite
up to the challenge of being senior riders. That award would fit FEI criteria
for the Young Riders, being those riders
  between 16 and 21.

That's probably not all, but it's a brief overview. I can say that after Lori
extracted a promise from David LeBlanc, to be at board meetings if he was chosen
as a WA Rider Rep...he didn't make it to Sunday's meeting. We got a good laugh
out of that, but considering the weather was so dreadful, figured people had
decided to get an early start on the trek home.

Hey y'all,
I'm assembling a contact group for all the juniors and young riders in PNER. I
found a lot of email addresses in the 2007 handbook, and sent out a sample email
to the folks I found, but I'm pretty sure that I missed some. Our first order
of business is to discuss and approve the minutes from the junior lunch meeting
last weekend, so that we can include our notes in the PNER newsletter.

If you are a rider under the age of 21, I want to know where you are! Parents
are welcome to get in on the action as well. Please email me with your name and
email addy, and I will add your info to my list.

Thanks.

Laughing all the way,

Saving money is a fun thing so Healthy As A Horse is implementing a new
service to help riders save money. Iım pulling together a bulk order for
Kentucky Performance Products (KPP). If we have 1,000 pounds total (any
combination of KPP products as long as the total weight is 1,000 pounds),
then the order can be sent via truck with substantial savings on shipping
costs. In addition, I can give an additional 10% off on the cost of the
product.

An example of the shipping savings: To send a 40 pound bucket of Endura-Max
to Washington via UPS is about $34. To send it as part of a freight order,
the cost is only $11.

KPPıs products include: Neigh-Lox and ADR (digestive aids); Equi-Jewel and
EnduraExtra (for energy); Summer Games, Summer Games Plus, Endura-Max and
Endura-Max Plus (electrolytes); Elevate and MyoGuard (antioxidants); and
Joint Armor, Ker-A-Form and MicroPhase (maintenance).

To learn more about their products, visit the KPP Web site at:
www.kppusa.com.

To participate in this bulk order, you must order by no later than March 14
and all orders must be pre-paid. The orders will be delivered to the Home On
The Range Ride to be held March 29.

If youıd like more specific information, please contact me privately.

Thank you Darlene and Susan for putting on a great convention.? It was an
excellent venue and it was very nice to have the covered arena for Donna
Snyder-Smith's presentation.? The trade show was loaded with things I wanted to
buy and fortunately I didn't buy all of them.? I need to save my gas money!?
Mike Foss gave me some helpful hints on how not to trot out--thank you Dr. Foss.
It is always fun to see everyone again and to look forward to ride season with
so many wonderful people and horses.? We are so lucky to be in the Pacific
Northwest.
Jazz and I thank all of you--ride managers, riders, horses, veterinarians,
volunteers, crew--all of you for making this a most memorable season.? See you
all on the trail this spring.

Well, convention has finished and it was memorable! From the great
facilities how cool is it that we could have a mounted demonstration with
a presenter of Donna Snyder-Smithıs caliber! Plus lots of space to spread
out. It was lots of fun and I would like to give a huge thank you to
everyone who helped out putting this shin-dig on. Itıs a bunch of work but
oh so worth it!

Hereıs our story about driving home. (For those of you who donıt know, Mikey
is our 8-pound Yorkshire/Chihuahua dog.)

Our trip home was similar to what others have said (snow, ice, slow speeds,
white knuckles, etc.), but Mikey helped add to our drive time. Surprisingly
it was raining in the Missoula area. That means the road from I90 to our
house was so iced that it looked like a Zamboni had just passed through and
any second there was going to be some kind of skating event.

We were hauling our bumper pull trailer and started to slip once so we
decided that even though home was a mere six miles away, we had better chain
up. We carefully hopped out of the truck (man, it was slick!) and put the
cable chains on the truck. Mikey contentedly watched from the warmth of the
truck (we left it running). Unfortunately, the truck door latched just a bit
and as Mikey jumped around the cab of the truck he at one point jumped on
the door lock button locked the door.

Now we live on a rural road. No lights, the place we were stopped was about
a mile from the closest house, no cell coverage, that wonderful Onstar
unlock service wouldnıt work, and our extra set of keys was in the truck. We
were stuck. We did have access to the trailer tack room and were able to get
a coat hanger out of our luggage and finally John maneuvered it until he
could poke the door unlock button. It was a long drive from Pasco. Our usual
5-6 hour drive took 11 hours ‹ 2 hours spent within six miles of home.
Thanks Mikey!! <grrr>

Thanks again to everyone who participated in the convention. It was a
totally fun time! I look forward to the coming year as your Prez. Let me
know of your ideas, suggestions, etc.

Whew! finally made it home last night. Our 5 hour trip turned into
11. Because we had the horse trailer, we opted to ride out the storm
and stay another night, as did Carol Giles, and the Rosens. The
airport closed so anyone flying out was stuck, too. Donna Snyder-
Smith decided to ride with us and try the Portland airport. We
started out with melted roads and sunny skies. All was well until
Arlington where we sat on the freeway for about an hour. A few miles
past Arlington the road closed both ways because of a bad wreck. We
sat for 3 hours. Everyone should have a portable DVD player as part
of their travel survival kit. Donna whipped hers out, we put up the
sunshades and newspapers to make a darkened theater (which looked
pretty funny to John Rosen when he jogged 3/4 of a mile up the road
to see how were were doing) and whiled away at least 2 hours in good
company. Carol and John entertained those around them by getting the
horses out for a bit. We got Donna to the airport with minutes to spare.

Thanks to all who made 2008 a great convention.

HI. Cole and Charlotte Still rode with me and our drive home was
pretty intense, to say the least!--took 8 hours, as opposed to 4 hours
driving there on Friday. Lots of cars and trucks off the road! Made
driving to town today on a little packed snow seem like a picnic!

Does anyone have any pictures of convention that they would share?
I'm especially interested in photos of Cole & Charlotte Still and the
Pioneer Breakfast? You can email them to me. Thanks in advance.

I think I owe a special thanks for being asked to fill in at the last minute
for another rider at the clinic..not sure how that all got decided, but I'm
thinking there were stringent criteria along the lines of a) do you live
close and b) not have any mountain passes to go over and c) have a trailer
that isn't buried in a snow bank. Since I was able to answer yes, no, and
yes..I guess I qualified. However it worked out, Smoke and I were most
appreciative (me more than him, I think.) of the opportunity to learn from
DSS. Lots to think about.

It was kinda scary driving home, but Guy is so calm and focused that I
really wasn't worried too much. It got a lot better the further north we
went, and by the time we hit Othello it was clear, there was snow on the
road but not bad. Smoke could hardly wait to get out of the trailer and tell
his buddies how he got to run (ok, trot rather sluggishly) with the big
dogs. He definitely had bragging rights.

Nice job on the convention. My 'fith place' award has its special place in
my kitchen..certainly one of a kind.

Sandy
