Since Dave was kind enough to post tips earlier this year on how to spice up
a swell sailing day, thought I'd add my own $.01. Prolly most of you do
this on a regular basis, but I just "discovered" it. I call it a
swell-off-the-lip. Perhaps a "swollen-lip" sums it up best...
Anyways, it worked for me most of the afternoon Saturday, and it was a lot
of fun. Just sailed in swell until a big vertical bit comes up like it's
going to pitch. Head up the swell, cut back hard and sheet in. The swell
launches you airborne back out in front of the swell, and if you don't pearl
on landing, you'll land in the trough planing and in shape to do it again.
Gorge swell where I was didn't have long stretches of really steep stuff,
guess you need real waves for that, but I did manage to get two in a row on
a couple of tacks.
Happened the first time by accident when I was going for a ramp, saw it
close down and tried a cutback to bail. That's why I'm adding the "pearl on
landing" advice ;-)
