Due to multiple reports of failures, it is my conclusion that empty
chamber indicators (ECIs) currently sold by CMP are UNSAFE for use in
AR-15 type rifles. The plastic is too brittle, and will snap if the
bolt is closed on them. Unfortunately, breakage usually wedges
the "stem" of the ECI inside the barrel, and the obstruction is not
always apparent. If the rifle is fired with an obstructed barrel,
injuries to the shooter may result.
Distinguishing Features:
CMP logo on the rear face of the unit;
Relatively straight stem;
"Wings" protruding on both sides of the central "tail" element.
Use of a hard, styrene plastic in construction.
Acceptable alternatives include the following:
Boonie Packer brand "chamber checker" ( http://www.redi-
mag.com/chambercheck.php )
Distinguishing Features:
Manufacturer's information and lettering on the SIDES of the unit;
Curved stem;
No prominent "wings" on either side of the tail;
Presence of two small bumps on either side of the stem;
Use of a flexible nylon plastic in construction.
The NRA Chamber flag is acceptable, but will jam in the rifle if
unmodified.
NOTE: NRA RULES NOW REQUIRE ECIs TO EXTEND INTO THE CHAMBER!!!
