Since I've come out of lurking with my Encino post I thought I would re-
introduce myself around here.

name's pablo. Architect in the los angeles area. cat3 road/cat4track
racer (until the children came, now I can barely get out)...
been riding (training) on an old '84 bianchi slx frame converted to
fixed gear (just welded on track dropouts) for 8 or more years and its
my favorite bike to ride. Bike's got brakes though since I used to ride
lots of hills on it. I just decided to upgrade and bought a replacement
frame/fork-an old 1962 Ephgrave No. 1. I couldnt resist the lugwork...

cheers.

I've been a member here for a long time, but havent contributed-only
lurked. I was checking out Monstertrack8 website (nice videos!) and saw
they came out to Encino to race.

Since that came up I thought I'd share a project I'm working on for
Encino velodrome on a pro-bono basis. Check out my site, www.pma-
architect.com and click on Institutional, then Encino. I'm currently
helping them complete their funding so they can build it.

I just wanted to share. Enjoy.

I wish I could use my rollers more often. I live on the second floor of my
building and I think mine have a bit of a wobble in the drums, but they
vibrate the entire building. Neighbors get confused, then pissed when they
discover what is causing it. They're fun to use for sure, though they do
take some practice.

AND... put a stool, or chair next to your setup so when you want to pull out of
your pedals, you have a place to rest your stationary foot/leg, while you slow
down the moving leg... a fixed gear on rollers feels squirrelly at first, but
gets easier with practice...

Are you rollers set up right? That is your front axle over or SLIGHTLY
behind the axle of the front roller?

Keep in mind that most track bikes are a bit twitchier than the average
road bike, so they will act faster on rollers... WHERE... everything
happens a little bit faster!

Ok, I'll take a stab at the introductions…I'm a fixed gear rider from Kansas
City, KS. My first alleycat was on a geared mountain bike, to which I drove and
was late and had a flat tire…I knew it was time to get something a bit more
peppy so I ended up getting a used Bianchi Pista and I've been hooked ever
since. It is so liberating to be able to just get on the bike and ride around
downtown, or ride to the alleycat or pub crawl and then ride home. The one thing
to be said about Kansas City is that we can have some fun alleycats, 65-100
riders with at least half on fixed gears. The last six months I've been commuting
on it as well, 3 miles to the bus then 5 miles from where the bus drops me off.
Last night was the time when I question the wisdom of a fixed gear when the 20
mph winds are stopping me in my tracks like I have a flat tire.I'm also
assisting with the moderating of the OldSkool list, so we should have eradicated
the spam issue that we had a few months back (we did let one slip a couple weeks
ago, but it won't happen again…)Fixed in the heartland,Mike Coons

I just now heard from our immigration lawyer. After 4 years of
countless interviews and court hearings, two arrests and a total of 60
days spent in federal prison in 2003 and 2005 (all of which happened
after we were married), my wife was finally granted her green card!
She's going to go for citizenship in 3 more years, which should be
just a formality after this!

Thanks to all for your good thoughts and prayers and visualizations

Just thought I'd drop in myself as well. I've been entertained by this site
for some time now but have rarely posted. While never owning a Old Skool
track bike of any sorts, this site and its inspired links definitely helped
bring me to the conclusion that riding fixed is a great way to go. (I've
only just now, after two years of pining for one, gotten a geared road
bike). I got smacked down by an SUV a couple of years ago, destroying my old
bike and upon "full" recovery immediately decided that fixed was the way to
go. Economizing at best, I got an IRO Jamie Roy. It has since gone through
numerous metamorphoses since then; stripped to its bare aluminum it has
become the functional cargo bike of dreams (BOB trailer on the rear, CETMA
rack on the front). This stark, virtually stress free in maintenance and
performance, this bike is my daily rider. Eventually, due to its harsh
abuse, I'll be wanting to pick up a true geometry track frame, something
classic and lugged. I've been too busy to look for specifics, it took a
while piecing together and building up the geared bike too (late '90's
Genius steel lugged Fausto Coppi).

This introduction thread is a great idea, I've been wanting to pop in here
and say hey for some time now, but haven't had the time to interject
thoughtfully. I've seen some chatter about wheels, and wanted to also
introduce a magazine that I'm not sure anyone here is aware of. Cranked
Magazine, which I run, happens to be raffling off a set of fixed hub wheels
for anyone that pre-orders the next issue. A little about Cranked, for those
unfamiliar, it started a year ago with a group of friends based in Seattle
all interested and enthusiastic about bikes and their respective communities
and their surrounding culture. The current issue has a feature on fixed
gears which I remiss not including anything on OST, as this forum is
definitely a part of the bike community Cranked is all about. Based in the
Pacific Northwest, Cranked is attempting to reach a larger audience and
feature a wide coverage of subjects and locales and offer something vastly
different from what you'll find in your typical bicycling magazine
(basically more people, their friends, their bikes and less tech and car
ads).

Scott,
I'm here in Connecticut, one of the original 13 colonies, and I had no
problem seeing my state's flag.

It will do stuff like that, based on your ISP's info... nothing
unexpected. The craziest so far is ... Rockville Maryland reporting
California.
