I just bought "Major" by Todd Balf. It's a biography of Major Taylor, I
don't know how long it's been out, so I could be the last person on the
list to know about it. Fantastic story, before Tiger Woods, before
Jackie Robinson, before Joe Louis or even Jack Johnson, at a time when
bicycle racing was bigger in America than NASCAR is now; there was this
black kid on a 14 lb. Munger track bike...

yo, this list has been like a ghost town for way too long, youd think
nobody had anything to say. used to be, when spring started coming
around and the days got longer, people had all sorts of shit to say on
here about busting out/de-wintering their rides, doing tuneups and
meeting up at the spot in central park to go on rides.

so lets kick this off. who, of all you local guys ive ridden with
before, are still around? lets do a ride. and other folks who are
local that maybe i dont know, all yall too. lets hook up a ride and
make some early-spring networking happen so maybe we can start hooking
up some group rides as the summer approaches. something like a ride
from cp to the drome, the old coney island ride, maybe checking out
some local spots/shops and shit. as long as theres a beer pitstop in

its been gathering dust for far too long. its been way too long since
ive been on a solid ride.

Date: Wed Jul 4, 2007 7:08 pm
Subject: Track Rake vs. Road Rake
mark_hom
Offline Offline
Send Email Send Email

Assuming the same head tube angle, why does my track bike handle
better with a short 38mm fork rake when on a smooth track oval, but
when set up as a road single speed it handles better with a 45mm
raked road fork?

A short raked bike has more trail and thus has better hands off
tracking when ridden on an ideal smooth surface. Photos of old time
track motorpacing show inward bent fork tubes (negative rake). I
thought this was to allow the bike to follow the pacer vehicle
closer, but it was probably to increase high speed stability via
increased trail.

Then why do road race bikes have more rake and road touring bikes
have more rake still? Why does my SS bike handle better on the road
with a 45mm road fork? Does this not decrease trail and
theoretically make steering less stable?

My theory is that the theoretical rake/trail diagram and a track bike
both assume an ideal smooth surface where trail is the main factor in
determining bike tracking and handling.

However, with a road bike, pavement imperfections come into play.
When a road bike front tires hits a bump or crack in the pavement, it
usually hits the tire more on one side than the other. The front
wheel gets deflected (slightly) and alters the steering (bump
steer). (Please note that I may be using the term "bump steer"
differently than the way it is used in the motorcycle and auto
industry). With a short raked track fork this deflection can act
through a longer lever arm (long trail) and exaggerate the bump steer
effect. Thus riding a bike with a track fork (short rake) will
feel "twitchy" on the road. But by installing a longer raked road
fork, the trail is decreased and the deflection has less leverage,
which results in decreased bump steer effect.

This is my theory explains why track bikes have short rakes and road
bikes have longer rakes. Therefore, when we convert a track bike to
road use, we should consider installing a longer raked road fork.

Am I thinking this out correctly, or is my theory hogwash?

Hey, I'll be in boston this weekend and a couple days next week. Unfortunately,
I won't have my
bike, but anyone know of areas where there are fixies? Any bars I shouldn't
miss? Bike shops?

I'll be in New England all week, mostly doing tourist stuff, but I always like
to check out what
other people are riding.

thanks.

Hello all,
Attached is a pic, if it doesnt post email me, of a Keirin frame I recently
brought back from Japan. This frame was raced by the keirin legend Youichi
Machishima. Before purchasing it I had to promise the previous owner that I
would only sell it to someone who would be honored to have it... and that I
send them pictures of the new owner. This binding agreement has kept me
from posting it on the hack market of ebay and relegated it to King Kog,
where it has sat unridden for the past couple months. Im am approaching
this like a Child Services agent looking for proper foster parents.

Price is $900 with Hatta NJS headset and BB. If you are living in NYC stop
by King Kog, Hope and Marcy 11211, or if you are outa state send me an
email.

53cm Presto NJS Keirin frame ridden a handful of times by Youichi
Machishima.
Youichi Machishima placed 1st in the 7th Asian games in 4000m solo & team
pursuit and 12th in the 21th olympic games in 4000m team pursuit. He
continues to race Keirin today.

Ride safe,
nate

Since I've come out of lurking with my Encino post I thought I would re-
introduce myself around here.

name's pablo. Architect in the los angeles area. cat3 road/cat4track
racer (until the children came, now I can barely get out)...
been riding (training) on an old '84 bianchi slx frame converted to
fixed gear (just welded on track dropouts) for 8 or more years and its
my favorite bike to ride. Bike's got brakes though since I used to ride
lots of hills on it. I just decided to upgrade and bought a replacement
frame/fork-an old 1962 Ephgrave No. 1. I couldnt resist the lugwork...

cheers.
pablo-
