Well, I'm Walter Skrzypek...grew up in a small pennsylvania town of Dubois...went to Penn State and came home to move to a smaller town of Falls Creek...But I spent a great majority of my college time at Hershey, Pa where I rode my Gazelle single speed downtown. Most of my college Daze were spent biking...many miles on my first "real" road bike...a 88 Schwinn Premis. I started on a old bridgestone my grandfather bought for me...in the 80s. Used my HS graduation money to buy the premis. and started racing...raced in the 90s...road racing mostly. Actually had a pro-MTB offer from Iron Horse in 90...passed it up to finish college and never got another such offer although I only improved vastly on the MTB. But my real passion was riding on the road...and hills. I loved riding up hills...I won some races along the way...Competed in the Tour De Toona in Altoona Pa and managed some pretty admirable results with a 4th place in the road race and 5th in the crit...after I fell and broke my collar bone and got up to finish!
Did some pretty wicked Cyclocross races as well and i love cross! Which brought me to building up my fixie...I enjoyed the simplicity of the Gazelle single speed...well, it is long gone now...and I managed to build up my 50 Dawes Red Feather and I fitted it with cross tires on 27 inch rims...I took to looking up info online into grass track racing and how it was popular in the highland games and the antics...some stories read like villians vs the good guys...i loved it. There was never a track close by me to ride track bikes but I used the fields in my area, and an old horse track to burn up some high tempo rides...getting on the track with others, mostly some MTB guys that wanted to just mix it up for fun was so enjoyable...I loved every minute of it and could understand the desire to race on those types of tracks.
Like Kirk...I am done with the big times for sure...because they were never really big times for me...haha. I have been to Kirk's site many a times...Great info!
I visit Trexlertown in the spring and fall each year for the swap, often take along my fixie. T-town is about 5 hours away so it is a trek if I wished to head down there and race...especially with a full time job locally....But I bike all year...my fixie gets most of my miles in the fall and spring and winter...it gets plenty also when I begin feeling burned out from either riding road or the job...it is my release...my relaxation tool. Just ride...no thought....simplicity!
Bikes...i have had so many pass through my fingers...my current stable is too large...but that's alright..it is vastly reduced from the past. I have 3 Bianchi Road bikes...because the Bianchi rep from when my parents and I owned a bike shop (yeah...that was all during the 90s as well) used to give me bikes, framesets, and parts for sponsorship help...it was great help! So I have 3 Bianchi road bikes...all from the 90s. I have a 93 Bianchi Project cross bike...and my newest is a the last chro-mo Cross bike bianchi came out with with the curved rear stays...it is my angel! I love that bike. I have a 1980 Spanish Razesa road bike...and then my
DAWES fixie. Without a doubt, she gets the most miles of any! Now, boy would i like to see picks of that Hobbs blue riband bike of Kirks!!!!
Interests with fixies...I like the OLD classics...the fixie deals of old where the riders ground up and down and all around the countrysides churning out the miles and racing! those guys were beasts! I love the old club bikes as well and path bikes...I often snag them up to build up as fixies. I am currently working on a deal for a few 50s Hobbs lugless beauties...For you new age bikers...Check out the OLD movie "Six Day Bike Rider" with Joe Brown....fixie on a track....
Subject: Re: [OldSkoolTrack] Non messenger fixed riders...
Alright, I will start it off:
My name is Kirk Albers and I am recovering bike racer. I ride all year, my fixed riding is mostly on the track, but I plan on showing the wannabes around here how to spin a bit by riding fixed on the road. I co-admin the www.fixedgearfever.com site along with Scott Patton, check it out!
Raced off and on since '84, last eight years on an UCI road team, a few wins here and there, one National Calendar win back in the 90's. Done with the bigtime, just racing for fun now, not going to miss grovelling in the laughing group up Brasstown Bald, etc.
Had a blast last year racing a bit on the track, Detroit 3-day Madison and Elite Nationals (big crash took us out of contention for the win in the Madison) were the highlights. Anyone who hasn't ridden a short track, get you a** to Forest City or Detroit.
Bought a couple of cool patches from Walt-O...

Subject: [OldSkoolTrack] Non messenger fixed riders...
Yeah, There are some non messenger types....
It has been so long since many of us posted and it is hard to even know who people are or their areas anymore! Maybe an intro...who, where, what they ride...do you ride all year...do you have individual websites...involved in alleycats...involved in set group rides in your area...involved in grass track riding....how about those insane bastards that actually ride fixies off road? not sure if that is the scene you want on here either being "street"...but heck...what streets you riding out there folks! I don't know anyone on here anymore and it has been so freakin' silent!
Wat ta ya thunk Greg! Intros? maybe that will liven up the conversation following intros, with similar thoughts hashing it out publically on the forum here with ideas and brainstorms! Might spike up some conversations....
Subject: [OldSkoolTrack] *** From Greg - I'm here, just been busy ***
Vince forwarded me the message from Jeff. The BUYcycling spammers and sex salespeople have been posting a lot.
So I made a few changes to the group's settings:
(1) For about a week, I set all messages to be moderated. That means I will have to approve each one. That should cut down on the Tall Singles and Great New Bicycle Info spam. After the week, I'll open it up to unmoderated posting for existing members.
(2) This will be permanent: all new members must be approved. This cuts way down on the spam.
Going forward, I have some questions for the group.
1. Would anyone like to volunteer as a co-moderator? Some busy groups have as many as 10 moderators!
2. Any suggestions to make this a more lively place? The messengers group and the non-track fixed-gear groups are pretty active. Are there any non-messenger fix riders on the streets and on the internet?
Anyone want to be in a NYC photo shoot for a magazine article on track bikes on the street? I've been having trouble getting in touch with some of the old-skoolers...
