Since you asked, I will explain the rest of my $.02.
We are talking primarily about CLUB events here. SCCA for all its officiousness
and bureaucracy is still a club. We are all members. This is not at all unlike
yacht clubs or country clubs where the members are assessed for docks,
parking lots, clubhouses and golf courses. The amenities of those clubs come
with an appropriate cost which is passed onto the members. Our club,SCCA, is similar
except our game is racing rallying of solo. The feature the club offers to its members
is the hierarchy, rule set and INSURANCE at reduced rates which allows us to play.
This is the reason my time is DONATED to the club. I am a member and can join in
the decision making process even if it is a minor input. We are all members of the club.
NOW that is where I draw the line between Club and PRO. In my mind
Pro events are those
that are not somehow club sanctioned. I am firmly of the opinion that I am tired of working
Pro events and being treated like a club worker. The question should not be why do we have to pay a membership fee to the club to work events. The question should be, Why do the pro events get the benefit of my donated club time for events which benefit other organizations. SCCA established the road racing, SCCA developed the guidelines for officiating road racing in the US, SC CA was the only road racing game in town for decades.
Trans AM, Can AM, F500 and other classes were the headline races for restricted regionals.
which brought us the new members. Lake Erie Communications handed out interest cards at the races. They were methods of increasing membership. Back in that day, the sanctioning body bought their insurance from K&K in Indiana. SCCA recognized that they could do their own underwriting and
save a bunch of money BUT everyone had to be members to be covered.
Today, we have SVRA,NASA,Champ Car,Grand Am, USAC, ALMS/IMSA , Carts and AMA vying for our time. Yet for the most part the training, experience, organization of the officals comes from SCCA. My question is, Why don't the other groups PAY US? or at least offer incentives ( Champ Car paid the SCCA dues for the workers at the Cleve.GP last year and may this year and F1 offers a nice package of shirt and goodies for workers). Apart from that who benefits from your donated time from the other Pro style events? Often at MidOhio the only people who are not paid are the officials. The trash, parking, camping, program sellers etc, They get paid. As road racing officials, we come to the table with training , experience and knowledge. Why not us? You are 100% correct. It is a significant cost associated with traveling to and working a race. Ask yourself where the benefit is? Follow the money.
At club events it is the region whose books are open for examination. The regions are non profit. When you work the other events make sure you look long and hard at the treatment you get from the sanctioning body and the track management. As road racing officials we often spend a lot of money, time and energy volunteering to work races. Yet when we deign to make reasonable requests of the people making the money from Pro events they are tossed aside with little regard. Bear this in mind the next time you question CLUB membership. Also consider this when a track is being excused for being less than accomidating to us "because its a business".
This is a huge reason why people find it more fun and easier to sit in the stands and drink beer rather than buy into our world. Its not the membership fee, its the lack of appreciation
of our skills and time.
This is why I belong to the CLUB. I'm a member.
Aren't you sorry you asked that question?

My $.02
With the cost of volunteering so expensive today, why
should there be any membership dues for those, whose
presence is necessary, for the events to happen at
all. Besides my membership, for each event, I need
$50 just to fuel my car to and from Mid-Ohio, or
Nelson Ledges. Add other cost for being there and a
racing season has gotten very expensive. Something I
have been thinking twice about; whether I can afford
it or not.
I agree that the membership is a problem with
attracting new workers, but also think the rising cost
is another reason that many experienced workers leave.
