Just got off the phone with the park director and here's the deal as
of now.
There are 3 logging crews at tobo. One logging crew per park. They
pretty much have around 2 weeks to get what fallen trees they
can. After 2-3 weeks the wood is no longer good.
FEMA is in town and the county is waiting to see how much money
they'll get for cleanup.Once the park receives the money they will
then hire a cleanup crew. All the fallen trees and roots will need to
be removed from the park.Rotten wood attracts bugs.Bugs will get into
the good trees and then kill them so removing as much fallen stuff as
possible is important.
As of now no one knows how many trees are down or what kind of impact
getting them out will have on the land/our trails.Doug assured me that
they will do whatever they can to cause as little damage getting them
out as possible.Once again no one knows what the interior of the woods
looks like. There may be 500 trees down for all we know.
Once a cleanup crew is hired they will work directly under Doug Ferney
the park director.Doug assured me that we(OMBA) would be involved in
whatever decisions are made in regards to cleanup.I'm going to
research how a few parks down in Florida handled a similar situation.
As of now,we dont know what the fate of the trails are going to be.It
all depends on how many trees are down.
That being said,I,along with a few others, will be out there
Wednesday(May 28)with chain saw to try and access the trail starting
at the trail head. The goal is to try and get to the interior just to
see what it looks like.
Feel free to come on out if ya want.
