I don't know one from another. I personally do not like getting a ton of emails, but I also don't like having to go to a separate site. I do like the ability to easily go to a site and look for information that was previously posted. No matter what direction we go, I will adapt. I am supportive of what the members want, and what will help get the word out to members and non-members alike.

In my opinion, all of us just want to race. All that really requires at a minimum is enough organization to get us all to the same track on the same day, with roughly equivalent equipment. Pretty much what we have now.
But in talking to people off line and a few of the threads we have had on the board, there is interest in growing the group as big as we can get it, until no more fit on a track. In order to do that takes a little more formal organization, and some idea of how the rest of the world perceives us. The two go hand in hand.
What I mean by that is that the perception of the other karters is important to us, as they are a major source of new racers for our group., but we also want to attract the "right" kind of racers. Having a formal (yet simple) tech inspection program legitimizes our efforts in a big way, and will scare off the "wrong" kind of racers.
As the group gets bigger, one or two of us buying all of the year end trophies will get unwieldy , so if we do the formalization of creating a "real" board of directors, I think it also comes with a membership fee. The membership fee will be very modest, because all it has to pay for is year end awards, and the purchase and maintenance of a set of tech tools for each championship class we have.
So to me we are not trying to create some big onerous monster. Just a way to keep everything fair and professional for everyone as we grow. The other way is to just keep things like they are, and react to the changes as they occur. The whole formalization thing is just a suggestion.

Now why on Earth would you want to see a grown man pee himself??! But seriously, sure I'll bring the camera along. Couple of funny things about those cameras. First, even with a 2GB card they only record for 15 minutes (not enough for a whole race). Second, in a high vibration situation they seem to turn off, IE going down the carousel you are shaking and bouncing around like a MoFo. But I'll give it a try!

I don't recall that vote (I guess that should be expected when having
a beer during the meeting lol). I don't want to be the anti-fun
champion here I just think that we should revamp things a bit.
Making decisions via emails and forum posts isn't always the best way
since the written message is often taken the wrong way. I agree with
you that getting into a bunch of bylaws stuff would not be a fun
thing to do. Maybe we don't need to get THAT formal. Refining the
decision making process, yes. Re-evaluating who is on the board, yes
for a couple of reason I don't want to get into here.

Last year at the Elephant Bar 2008 scheduling meeting, we did discuss the "positions", and by unanimous vote of the 5 or so attendees decided to Keep Brad#9 as president, Todd as Technical director, and Scott as Secretary. That was all official enough for me.
"Formal" is usually the antithesis of "fun" in my mind. And the NFRA is not a "Formal" organization by any means. It has no meetings to Preside over, or Treasure to keep track of so a "President" and a "Treasurer" are not necessary. If we want to establish a 5 person board I am OK with that, but to be "formal" we need "by laws" - that is the real first step. Those by laws would dictate the makeup and responsibilities of the board, contain a mission statement, and operating plan.
I suggest we look around for ready-made by laws we can quickly modify to our needs.
I would suggest a "Chairman" rather than a "President", but we can discuss that more later. The title of President carries more baggage with it, where the real purpose of the role is to keep order at the suggested 2 annual meetings.

I've been president since '05 and having never been actually voted into office I'm not comfortable continuing in the position.
So here is what I propose. I suggest we establish a 5 person board of directors made up of a President, Vice-President, Techical Director, F200 Class Representative, and a WF Class Representative. It would be the mission of the board to run the NFRA (set the rules, track liason, publicity, etc. etc.). Perhaps we could have biannual meetings (in January before the season starts and a mid-year meeting in June) where all members are welcome and encouraged to attend but NFRA business up for discussion are voted on by the board.
I don't want to make this an onerous proposition but all of the emails back and forth regarding NFRA rules, press release etc. makes it clear to me our current operating prodecures aren't sufficient as we continue to grow and move forward.
I am happy to continue along as the NFRA webmaster. :)

There is a name for my practice time before a heat, it is called "qualifying". When I got my F200 in October I got it 2 days before the race. I did not even start it before race morning. The guys did a great job with oil changes and valve adjustment. Just run what ya brung, and have fun.

I think it is time formalize the stucture of the NFRA. We've never actually held any sort of election. When we got the NFRA rolling back in late '05, Steve, Todd and I were sitting around in his garage and we decided we needed to have SOME sort of structure so we just sort of said ok, you do this, you do this etc. etc. With only 3 of us it seemed a tad silly to hold an election. I've been president since '05 and having never been actually voted into office I'm not comfortable continuing in the position.
So here is what I propose. I suggest we establish a 5 person board of directors made up of a President, Vice-President, Techical Director, F200 Class Representative, and a WF Class Representative. It would be the mission of the board to run the NFRA (set the rules, track liason, publicity, etc. etc.). Perhaps we could have biannual meetings (in January before the season starts and a mid-year
meeting in June) where all members are welcome and encouraged to attend but NFRA business up for discussion are voted on by the board.
I don't want to make this an onerous proposition but all of the emails back and forth regarding NFRA rules, press release etc. makes it clear to me our current operating prodecures aren't sufficient as we continue to grow and move forward.
I am happy to continue along as the NFRA webmaster. :)
Heeheh you can call me whatever you want. Hell, I've been called a
LOT worse! But, considering I'm neither fearless or a leader you may
have to work on that. d'oh!
