Happy New Year Everyone!
I need some info/advice...we are planning a roadtrip to Baja for
camping and surfing (should I say surfing and camping?!). In any
case, we've never driven south of the boarder. We are thinking of
leaving Santa Cruz sometime between late Jan and March, and being
away for 10-14 days. When is the best time to go? Where should we go?
Realistically, how far south can/should we go? What should we bring
with us (besides or boards?)If you've done this trip and can share
your experience...the do's and don'ts...I'd be most grateful.
Happy Surfing in the New Year!!! Alisa
I know it's short notice, but I'm heading to Maui on Wed (12/30) for sun, surf and boys. I figured it was a good way to ring in the New Year.... anyone else heading that way?? Cheers, Rach
Any opinions about this board?
http://roxy.com/?pageID=1905
If this link doesnt work, got to the roxy site, click on products, usa
and then scroll down to boards, etc..
A friend is going to buy this for me and he doesn't know much about
boards(about as much as I do). It's listed as a beginner board.
Thanks guys.
Fran

ABOUT M10
(BIO excerpt from SurfTech's website)
At just 33 years old, M10 Surfboards founder/shaper Geoff Rashe
finds himself at the helm of one of the world's hottest new
shortboard labels. He is one of the first shapers in the USA to use
in-house CNC technology for both design and production. As a
contributing designer to the Surftech program, Rashe feels he brings
modern precision to traditional art of his elder colleagues.
He shaped his first board in 1989 while a student at U.C. San
Diego. "It was a 6' 4" roundpin that I shaped for myself, but I sold
it for $120."
Back in Santa Cruz, Rashe worked at Arrow Surfboards from 1994 to
1996 and claims Bob Pearson as his biggest influence. Halfway
through 1996 he started his own surfboard company, naming it M10 in
honor of Mach 10.
"I started under my mom's deck here at her house on the Westside,"
Rashe said. "Then for a short time I was in Watsonville and then we
moved to the factory where we are now on the Westside of Santa Cruz.
Rashe figures he's done about 6,500 boards in his career, but he
goes back to one in particular that put him on the road: " The first
board I made for Ratboy in 1994 got numerous magazine photos and
brought me a lot of attention. I guess you could say it launched my
career."

ABOUT THE FILM:
High Noon At Low Tide, by Eric Nelson, the producer of "100 Foot
Wednesday," "Fueled" & "20 Feet Under" is a compelling documentary
of the historic Mavericks week aof December, 1994. This film has
been entirely re-mastered with new, up-to-the minute interviews
about that epic week.
Five days of the biggest swells to hit California changed big wave
surfing forever when a 16-year-old Jay Moriarity charged 20 foot
Mavericks and fell into surfing lore. The week comes to a climactic
finish when Hawaiian legends Brock Little and Ken Bradshaw arrive to
see what Mavericks is all about. And big wave legend Mark Foo seeks
the ultimate thrill and pays the ultimate price. Included in this
new re-mastered version are interviews with the surfers then and now
as they describe how some of the biggest waves to ever hit
California changed their lives and big wave surfing forever.

Hi + wishing you all peace & clean waves heading into the holidays, wherever you are.
Also, I wanted to leave you with one last update from 2004 + a heads-up for events already heading our way in 2005. Get stoked - there's SO much more we can do next year!
Here's what you'll find below:
1.) our NorCal Women's Surf Fest donation results - we're giving away more $ this yr!
2.) key club dates for 2005 to mark down NOW
3.) another GEN MTG & more events coming in Jan & Feb 2005 - pls attend!
*** CLUB DONATION RESULTS - FROM OUR SURF FEST & FUNDRAISER ***
Great news! I just finished counting all the beans and paying all the bills for our NorCal Women's Surf Fest 2004. And - (drum roll) - we'll be DONATING MORE THAN DOUBLE the amount of money we gave away last year - ~$3,000.00!
We're giving the heavy majority of this cash to our 3 local Surfrider Foundations - as a thanks for their continued support of our club and to support their key efforts around clean water, coastal access protection and preservation of surf breaks around the world.
The remainder of the proceeds have been ear-marked for creating and posting 'Surf Etiquette' signs at Linda Mar (very much like the one at the 38th street stairs at Pleasure Point, SC).
How much we contribute, along with other Pacifica surf groups, has yet to be determined.
In fact, we may have funds left over to donate elsewhere. I will be sending out a 'poll' to the club so you can vote for where you'd like to see us donate that $$$. Please watch out for that poll as it will come in the next few weeks. (And, if you'd like to suggest a surf-related local charity, pls email their info to me & I'll include it in the poll.)
*** TWO KEY 2005 CLUB DATES TO MARK DOWN NOW! ***
1.) NorCal Women's Surf Club Fundraiser:
SAT, August 6, 2005, 3-8pm @ El Rio, SF
2.) 3rd Annual NorCal Women's Surf Fest:
SAT, September 10, 2005, all day @ Linda Mar, Pacifica
Also, note that we will begin planning for both of these events (and more) MUCH earlier this year. Starting with our second Club General Meeting to be held Feb 7, 2005. (More details on that below.) If you are interested in helping plan, promote and run our 3rd Annual NCW's Surf Fest, please let me know. We are looking for help and LEADERSHIP -- and we need you!!! Drop me a line at: anne_moellering@... and I'll add you to the 2005 team!
*** UP-COMING CLUB EVENTS: JAN, FEB 2005 ***
1.)New Year's Day Surf Session - Jan 1
This'll be a local surf session - likely either Linda Mar, Montara or HB Jetty, depending on conditions. It won't be crazy early. But it will be in the 'morning' - the perfect way to dive into 2005 (literally)....stay tuned to the list for details...
2.)January's Monthly Club Surf Day - Jan 16th
Julie M will be sending out details on this one -- come out and play! The water's not so cold (promise)...and it's always fun to meet new surf buddies...
3.)Club Surf Movie Night at Maria Pease's! -- exact evening TBD
Maria - i didn't forget that you volunteered to do this @ our last GEN MTG!!!
What date would you like to pick...?
4.)2nd CLUB GENERAL MEETING - Monday, Feb 7th, 7pm
The last GEN MTG was a great way to meet people and we all came up with a bunch excellent ideas for 2005. Now it's time to make those ideas happen......and get cracking for our August Fundraiser and NCW's Surf Fest. Both new ideas for the year + these events will be on the agenda for this mtg.....PLEASE COME!
Phew. That's it for now. Again, have a peaceful Holiday...and I hope to see a lot of you in the water on January 1st!!!
If you are staying in LaJolla, go to www.surfdiva.com to rent a board and walk
it over to a break down the street. Remember shuffle your feet as there are
stingrays. Was down there about a month ago on work boondoggle and it was so
much fun. Water is clean as Carmel but warmer.
Surfdiva also has cute stuff if you wanted to pick up a little something to
commemorate your trip.
Cheers,
Sharon

Hi,

Does anyone know of good beginner surf spots and/or places to rent a

Thanks!

Hi ladies,
I would appreciate some insight on buying a good, sturdy longboard.
I tried to graduate from my old reliable softtop last year and bought
a 9' Pearson Arrow. At first I thought I loved the board, but less
than a year later and some pretty big dings, I'm not. The board is
so fragile, one little bump and you've got a huge ding. I've since
learned that Arrows (from a chat group on their website) are known
for a "light glass" job which makes the boards light, but very
susceptible to dings. It's a pain having your board in the shop
every other month. (These are dings that needed professional
repairs.) So while I understand that dings are a part of the sport
and inevitable, etc, etc..... can anyone recommend a nice, solid,
board/shaper that may be a bit more heartier than the others (a
little more weight is fine); maybe I need to special order one with a
particuliar glass job; maybe epoxy is the way to go?? Do more
stringers make a difference?? Help me, educate me! I would
appreciate any insight before making another purchase. THANKS!
Marilyn

Hi, Recently a member posted that you can join Gorilla Sports &
Crunch for $50 down and $45 per month. Just to let you all know that
is a family add-on rate, meaning you would have to add-on to an
exsisting members account to legitimatly get this rate. If a
membership sales person offers you this rate and your not adding on
to a legit account your membership could be audited and dropped or
put you at a much higher rate. Sorry to add bad news to the group,
but I work for Gorilla and would hate to have to tell anyone in the
group they could not get this rate if they came to the club.

Heya,
Just spoke with Rob & he said sizes for suits are 6, 8, 10, & 12 for
$80.00 but is selling the wet and dry suit together for $120.00.
You may not have use for wet & dry suit but if you ever plan on
diving or wake boarding it's great! Suit brands are H2O and Rob
currently uses this brand for rentals due to the high durability of
the suit. Be sure to ask him about booties if you are interested or
any other gear. He really wants to get rid of this stuff due to
fact these sizes are not popular in the Pismo area.
Info to contact Rob is as follows:
Soulutions
187 Pomeroy Ave
Pismo Beach, Ca 93449
Phone: 805-773-5991
Rob@... if you have an extra long Christmas list you want
to send to him.
Hope this helps some of ya out!!!

I'm posting here due to the large reply. I will be posting sizes
and prices for everyone. Soon as I get a reply with the info I will
let you all know....most likely today at some point.

Hello,
Somehow the waves at Linda Mar last Saturday were mellow enough to
paddel out through. Unfortunately the waves were closing out, but
Tracy and I managed to enjoy being in the water. It was also very
nice to meet another lady surfer.
The next surf session will be Sunday January 16th. I will send out
another email as the date gets closer.
Hope to see you then!
Julie
Hey Chicas,
I found a retailer that would like to blow out the suits he has and
currently giving a great deal. I picked up a wet suit and dry suit
for only $120.00 after taxes out the door. If anyone is interested
let me know at trixiedoll72@... and I will give you the info.
For anyone looking for a suit he is willing to give a deal wet suit
with booties $100.00. There is nothing wrong with the suits he
can't sell them due to the sizes being too small for the local
persons in the area he is located. I picked up a size 4 but he has
tons of size 4-10. drop me a line if you are interested.
Ciao,
Gen
I'll be in Sydney from Dec 20 - Jan 3 and am looking
to hear of any great surf and stay recommendations.
Thanks!

It looks like the waves will be HUGE tomorrow. As a novice surfer I
am not sure I will be able to paddle out, but I plan on being at
Linda Mar's never open bath house (thanks for the tip Tracy!) at
9am. If the waves are too big then at least we can watch some
excellent surfing and meet eachother.
It was suggested to me that people meet at Linda Mar and drive down
to Cowell's where the waves should be smaller. I have a commitment
Saturday afternoon so I cannot travel to Santa Cruz, but encourage
you to continue with the surf day.
I will keep my fingers crossed that next month we will be able to
surf together!
Happy Holidays and I hope to see you next year,
Julie Mercer
A good place to meet is by the new (never open) bath house. Are you still going. I heard that the waves were double over head.

As this weekend is the second weekend of the month, it is time to meet up for a surf session!
I will be at Linda Mar Saturday morning at 9am. Please let me know of a good place to meet up, as I am not super familiar with that beach, otherwise I have a blue VW cabriolet and I ride a 7.9 fun shaped board.
Hopefully the waves will be kind and the weather accommodating. I look forward to meeting some new surfers and enjoying some waves.
Hope to see you soon,

P.S. If there is anyone near Santa Cruz who would also like to host a morning surf session, please do.
