In response to Aimee’s post, there were some good ideas for beginners. However I have to disagree with her idea to throw your board over the back of the wave. One of the cardinal rules in surfing is to hang on to your board. There are several ways to hang on to a longboard:
1. Turtling. Hold the nose of your board as close to your head as possible, turn over on your back, and pull the nose down under the wave.
2. Pushup. Pushing up your body while pushing the board down through the whitewater,
3. Duckdiving by placing your knee on the forward part of the board and kicking with the other leg.
4. Holding your board with one arm as you attempt to go under the wave.
5. Slicing you board where you turn the board on its side and push down, then under,
And probably others. Watch Richard Schmidt’s learn to surf video, or the Art of Longboarding with Wingnut.
For shortboarders duck diving is the method of choice.
Throwing your board is dangerous because you often cannot see over the back of the wave when you are in front of it to really see if someone is in front of you, It is also unpredictable as your board may come back over the falls at you and others. The general guideline is that if you cannot hold onto your board you are in waves that are too big for you. Everyone bails their board occasionally;( I did today in heaving low tide OB and snapped my leash) but I believe throwing your board out the back is a very dangerous habit to begin.

Hi All,
Just a few tips which helped me when I first started surfing:
1. Don't look at your feet -as you're getting ready to take off on a wave look toward the beach or whichever direction you plan on surfing to. I found this tip to be very helpful -before then, I kept falling off my board as soon as I got on the wave. The idea is similar to skiing down a mountain-
2. When heading out in surf that's crashing onshore - Just as the wave is ready to closeout, toss your board over the wave (make sure know one is around you) and then dive through the wave. Also, when doing this trick, turn your board around with the fin out towards the ocean. The weight of the fin will help carry the board over the wave. Once you are past the closeout, jump back on your board and paddle out to the break. You may still get tossed around abit, but I feel it is less dangerous than hanging on your board and having a wave break on you close to the rocky shore. I did this trick at 38th and it helped alot.
3. Never turn your back to a wave -this is key. One time I was in small surf and as I was leaving the water, a small wave closed out on me. It hit me from the backside and I lost my balance..I nearly drowned because I wasn't prepared for that wave.
4. Being in the right spot. This is tricky to describe but a really great surfer told me to paddle to the top of the foam (after the wave closes out). That area is where the next wave will be. The foam kinda forms a triangle in the water, and you would want to be at the top the triangle.
5. And finally (last but not least) -Create your destiny. By this I mean, paddle towards the wave, don't wait until the wave comes to you. The closer you are to the wave, the better chance you will have catching it and not having it close out on you. You'll see this aggressive surf style in crowded lineups. The really good surfers are constantly on the hunt for the waves, and as soon as the waves start coming, they all race towards the wave. First come, first served.

BIG STICK LOG JAM 2004
Pleasure Point, Santa Cruz
April 24-25
...........................
The longest running classic Longboard surfing contest in the world
goes off again at Pleasure Point, on Saturday/Sunday, April 24 and
25, 2004. Coming from up and down the West Coast, many of the
world's best men and women longboarders will compete on boards
manufactured pre-1970. Leashes are not permitted!
This "Classic Boards/No Cords" two-day event features almost 100
competitors, ranging in age from 7 to over 60. A real blast from the
past and a great family outing, the cliff at Pleasure Point is
perfect for viewing the competition and performance events,
featuring paddle races and tandem wave riding.
Classic boards will be on display, and surfboards, gear, wetsuits,
artwork, clothing, and local merchant gift certificates will all be
raffled off during the contest. NEW THIS YEAR, top board shapers
have been invited to compete in designing and building "retro"
boards - replicas of classic 50s and 60s boards using modern
materials. An auction at Saturday night's contestant/club banquet
will determine the winner, and the other collectibles will become
part of Sunday's $1-a-chance drawing!
Sponsored by Big Stick Surfing Association (BSSA), a premier Santa
Cruz longboard club formed in 1983, this non-profit event raises
thousands of dollars for the benefit of such groups as Ride-A-Wave,
Surfrider Foundation, Junior Lifeguards, Surfers' Environmental
Alliance, and the BSSA Scholarship Fund (with awards presented
through Schools Plus! at Santa Cruz, Soquel, San Lorenzo, and Harbor
High Schools).
For more information, contact your BSSA sponsor/coordinator Debbie
Sidenfaden at 831.588.4080, or e-mail at seafriendly@....
Debbie, of Seafriendly Photography, will be shooting photos of the
event. Contact her if you'd like her to get you, team riders, your
company's logos/banners, etc.
Just passing this on from a surf pal of mine. The location is ideal
for any surfers seeking a room to rent...it's about 5-10 minutes
away from Linda Mar.

....................................
Room For Rent in Pacifica's Sunny Linda Mar Valley
$575/month - Utilities Included
I have a room available for rent in my 2 bedroom, 1 ½ bath
townhome in the back of Pacifica's sunny Linda Mar Valley. It's
cheerfully painted and situated in a quiet location set back off the
road with generous green space and the San Bruno mountains
surrounding the property.
The room is medium sized (about 12'x12') with a sunny window
and decent closet space. It's carpeted and includes a designated
parking space, a shared bath, plus full use of the kitchen, a living
room with the basic entertainment setup, washer/dryer/dishwasher,
and a cozy backyard garden for BBQ's. Storage space is available
in the garage (if you surf, there's space for boards), and the room
is wired for another phone line if you choose to activate it.
ABOUT ME:
I am the only other person that will be living in the house. I'm
a 32 yr old male, an avid surfer, a Habitat Restorationist for the
city of San Francisco, and a fairly quiet guy, aside from listening
to some chill music and occasionally playing the guitar. I
typically head off to work on the rather early side and return by
late afternoon, so I am only around in the evenings when not
outdoors.
I keep the place really clean and would like to keep it that way. I
don't mind what your room looks like, but I like the common space
clutter free.
THE IDEAL HOUSEMATE:
The ideal renter would be someone who is mature, clean, quiet,
easygoing, employed, responsible individual. No smoking. No drugs.
No pets. No shoes in the house. No drama. Rent is $575.00 per
month, and includes basic utilities (water, gas, electricity,
trash). Deposit is $500. Room is available for move-in
immediately. The preferred term is 6 months minimum, but there may
be some flexibility.

Hi. My name is Stephanie. I am a high school senior and at my school
everyone is required to do a large research project senior year
called the Senior Project (creative, huh?). I've chosen to do my
Senior Project on my learning how to surf (which I'll be doing next
week in Pacifica). This project also involves doing two interviews
with people involved in your chosen field of research. The trouble
is, I live in tiny land-locked Concord and not many people surf, and
those that do haven't been at it so long or do it as more than an
occasional hobby. If anyone is nearby and would be interested in
letting me interview them about their surfing experience or knows
anyone that would be, I would seriously appreciate it. Pros or
competitors would be awesome. I can be reached by e-mail at
sstensv@.... Thanks a bunch.

I went to this event last year and it was really, really funny! Hope to see you there.
I have a few extra slots available on this amazing wilderness surf
trip in Vancouver Island, Sunday April 25 to Saturday May 1. Surf
where others haven't!!
A trip overview follows. Whet your appetite with pictures and
details at http://www.tatchuadventures.com
TRIP OVERVIEW:
Here's your chance to surf empty, glassy green waves on the remote
NW coast, three hours north of Tofino, the famed surf town. Water
temps are in the low 60, warmer than Northern California waters.
(you will still need to wear a 3/2).
The breaks are ideal for the intermediate surfer to the advanced.
I've surfed various spots in prior trips that have ranged from thigh-
high reef breaks and river mouths to 12-15 foot wave faces (glassy,
big open faces, not spitting barrels). The fun breaks are in
practically in front of the lodging area and we'll be jetboating
into other area breaks. Still tons of breaks in the area that have
gone unridden...Some of the secret big waves spots in the winter
were supposed to appear in the last Billabong Odyssey film...This is
one very special surf region.
LODGING:
Cool Treehouse lodging with ocean views built by the owners, a
Canadian/Austrian couple, amidst a spectacular forest of cedar and
spruce trees.
WHAT ELSE:
See greywhales up close (they come in close to shore this time of
year) & amazing wildlife -- bald eagles, bears, wolves, and more.
All meals & beverages are included and feature yummy organic food &
fresh seafood (crab, lobster, gooseneck barnacles, suchi), baked
goodies, and fab homemade muesli...A variety of surfboards are
available if you don't want to bring yours. Hot sauna on the
premises.
OTHER ACTIVITIES:
They can arrange for flyfishing, diving, hiking, glass ball hunting,
etc.
TRAVEL:
Flights will entail SFO to Seattle, then hopping onto a puddlejumper
into Vancouver Island...plus a van drive to the remote oceanside
camp.
COST: $1490.00 per person, all inclusive (excluding airfare)

We are also going down to San Onofre for a long weekend on April 9-12th.
We are two couples (all women) and a 4 year old. If there are any other surfing
moms who want to join us and bring kids and share childcare while we surf,
please email me. The campsite can fit up to 8. We are at the San Mateo campsite,
which is not right on the beach, but is apparently much quieter.
I also have a question about dogs for anyone who has been to San O. Officially
no dogs are allowed on any state beaches, but many do allow it as long as they
are on a leash. Does anyone know what is the dog status at San Onofre? Our old
dog likes to sit on the beach under an umbrella and watch us surf, but if she
has to stay tied up at the campsite we would rather just leave her home.
I'd also be interested in going again with norcal women if there are any other
moms going with small children so my daughter has someone to play with and we
can take turns watching them.

Hey all:
Time to rally for some warm water and amazing waves in SoCal! San
Onofre (~1.5hours south of LA) is home to some legendary breaks
for long boarders (ie Old Man's) and short boarders (i.e. Trestles).
We've got two camp sites on the bluffs overlooking the ocean at San
Clemente State Beach and can accomodate up to 16 people.
This campsite gets the highest ratings of any of the
other local sites and was recommended by our own Tierza Davis
of Pura Vida Adventures.
(The train does run below the bluffs, however, so bring ear plugs.
Unless you're like Aimee Luthringer who slept like a rock last year
and didn't recall a train at night...)
Here's the campsite's website:
http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=646
On costs: we generally split all shared costs and there is no
mark-up on anything. The sites cost $19.75/site/night.
We'll do a couple of shared meals, and there's always a
need for beverages.
We already have 6-8 people signed up to go. If you'd like to join
us, please do! Just email me and let me know if there's anybody
else besides you who'd like to come (non-club friends are welcome).
I will also need to know how you plan to getto San O - i.e. driving,
getting a ride, etc. If you haven't figured that out yet, don't
worry -
we try to hook up drive buddies among the group where possible.
One last thing to note: in order to come with us you MUST HAVE YOUR
OWN BOARD, WETSUIT, ETC. We will NOT be outfitting people
or giving lessons.
Come on down to SanO, anne

p.s. We are also looking forward to the company of Darya Pilram and
her club (the SoCal Women's Surf Club)! They're coming up from
San Diego to surf and camp with us (at their own sites)!
Hi All,
I wanted to pass on this much needed site that I came across.

Here's the description per their yahoo page.....
Kiana's Tribe is a San Francisco Bay Area group of surfers who surf
Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica and other similar beginner spots. It was
created to help those who are looking for someone to surf with on a
particular day and time, to find a ride to the beach, to borrow a
board from someone who may have an extra one, to learn how to surf or
surf better, to hang out, socialize, and just have fun.
How late have people been out? I have not been in the water for
several months- if anyone wants to join me Wed after work ( I am a
beginner) let me know!

Hey everyone,
I am currently in the middle of a project for my anthropolgy class on
surfing and spirituality.
Would any of you be willing to answer my questionnaire? I'm including
it in this message. I will really appreciate any answers I get, and
if you could forward the questionnaire on to other surfers you know,
that would be great too.
Thank you in advance, and may you always catch the perfect waves.

Hey gals,
We're thinking about a road/camping trip down to San Onofre in
mid-April. Any information about best campsites, eats, weather, etc.
would be appreciated. Also, I want to bring my dog - is that possible?
If there are any other surfing moms out there who want to join us, we're
going around April 10th-16th - it would be fun to have some other kids
around and share the childcare.
Thanks,
Ren
