All –

I wanted to offer up the INCREDIBLE opportunity for our organization(s) and individuals to get involved with a most extraordinary organization, Ride-a-Wave (RAW).  I heartily suggest that you consider volunteering this year.  It is awesome and total privilege to get to work with such fine waterwomen and watermen in bring these kids to the ocean and making a hugh difference in their lifes.

I attended 3 camps last year as an surf escort and was completely blown away and incredibly moved by it all...especially the kids positive energy and amazing courage (especially in the face of severe burns and disabilities).

INFO:

In order to volunteer, YOU MUST ATTEND A TRAINING and the DATES OF THE TWO TRAININGS ARE:

Saturday, April 12 Volunteer Training 2:00 PM Cowell’s Beach

Sunday, May 4 Volunteer Training 0900 AM Cowell’s Beach

You can be trained in 4 areas: Tandem Surfer, Surf Escort, Kayak Paddler (and beach crew), Body/Boogie Board.

PLEASE go here for FULL info: www.rideawave.org

Mission Statement: To give everyone the chance to experience the thrill of riding a wave, whether they are physically, economically, or developmentally challenged. Our focus is to eliminate any barriers that may stand in the way of fully enjoying the environment.

Ride-A-Wave Goals: To ensure that all participants have a fun, safe, and unforgettable beach experience. We will accomplish this goal by offering a full day of beach activities including: surfing, bodyboarding, and swimming, beach games, lifesaving demonstrations, kayaking and marine biology.  A professional instructor on a one-on-one basis will supervise all events. Each participant will leave the beach with a better understanding and respect for the ocean and beach.

History: Ride A Wave, RAW, was started soon after the Shared Adventures "Day On The Beach" event. Foster Andersen, a quadriplegic for 22 years, formed Shared Adventures 8 years ago to break down the barriers of inadequate access and disability. This event has grown to be one of the largest beach parties of its kind with outrigger canoeing, scuba diving, kayaking and believe it or not, surfing. Nearly 150 para and quadriplegic folks are given this one day not to just enjoy the beach but to participate in a confident and safe environment. RAW volunteers are instrumental in the surfing venue of this event.

To participate, please print and completely fill out the Volunteer Information Sheet found HERE. Bring it to your first training session. One volunteer per form. If you have any questions, contact Kristen .

Future (Tentative) Kids Surf Camp Dates at Cowells Beach are:

Saturday, May 10 Mercy Services/Sycamore 0900 AM Cowell’s Beach

Sunday, May 11 CA School for the Blind 0900 AM Cowell’s Beach

Friday, June 6 Buchser Middle School 0900 AM Cowell’s Beach

Judith
