Re: [NorCalWomensSurfClub] Fiji

Stephanie,

I've been to a few spots....

Namotu -- one of my favorite international locales, is next door to Tavarua island and is fab if you can snag a spot...requires a bit of advance reservation.  The breaks, Namotu Lefts and Swimming Pools are best for a longboarder.

Although you can surf the critical, hollower left, Wilkes' Pass at a smaller size at your level, it can require some kahunas and it's not fun getting caught inside (from my experience).  An Aussie friend snapped his board there, and it tends to get a bit more crowded since non-Namotu guests from other resorts (Musket Cove, Shellseekers, etc) are allowed to go there via boat.  Non-Namotu guests are NOT permitted the other Namotu breaks.

Most of the coral is flat at all these spots (unlike Tavarua), but you can still get cuts...With bigger swells, Namotu Lefts can have some serious current.  There's a great old Surfer's Journal article on Namotu back in the late 1990s and the Aussie owners are fun to meet.  I went in  2001.  Try to score some of their fresh yellow fin tuna sashimi from the day's catch.

Nagigia (http://www.fijisurf.com) is a bit mellower with a good variety of breaks nearby and others worth a cool daytrip.  For the main break, though, just beware of taking any waves all the way in, as there's a shallow nasty reef.   I went in 2002.

Check out their sites... Email or call if you have other questions.  I do have some photos if you want to check it out.

I'd skip most of the other places like Marling Bay (Beqa Island with breaks like Frigates, etc.) as it's heavy...another area, the Sigatoka river mouth, if I recall correctly, just had a surfer attacked by a shark and waves aren't that consistent.   Last I checked, it was pretty remote...

Best,
monica lee

Anybody got recommendations for Fiji? I'm a longboarder and looking for a
more mellow trip than hitting cloudbreak or the more challenging spots....

Any pointers would be appreciated!
