Hey Charles,
Thanks for the input. Indeed, guys not daring to run
on certain catchers/outfielders sure makes arms hard
to figure.
Fun anyway, tho'. :)
God Bless,

I do think that several factors go into a catcher's reputation of
having a strong arm. One of which is the pitching staff-- are they good
at holding on base runners, which would either make it more easier or
more difficult for them to throw base runners. I also think that once a
catcher gets a reputation of having a strong arm, teams are less likely
to run on them, i.e. test out his arm. It's the same thing with whether
or not, teams want to try to take an extra base on an outfielder
(a.k.a. Ichiro). As far as, catchers with a reputation for having a
strong arm, one of the best is Ivan Rodriguez. One of the worst, as far
as reputation was Mike Piazza, although he could certainly hit.
Hey Rod,
Thanks for the link.
Alas, we don't have caught stealing or attempted
steals in the database for our toy. I shoulda
mentioned that.
All we have are put outs & assists, so that makes
hazarding a guess tough. We have Gold Glove into,
which helps, and games played. I think that's about
it, though. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi George - this isn't so much about rating catcher defense related to
stolen bases and caught stealing, which I presume is a simple enough metric
(CS/CS+SB)... This is a link to the presentation which won The Doug Pappas
Award last year at SABR36 in Seattle. Who knew that this could be measured?

If anyone's got a neat little formula for figuring
this out, boy, that would be cool.
Hey SABR-folk,
Could someone tell me the names of some catchers who
are known for having good arms? That is being good at
throwing out base-stealers?
Also, the flip side, could you tell me the names of
some who were notoriously bad at throwing out runners?
Me and my good friend Rick Shubb (yes, he's the
world-famous bluegrass musician) are hooked on a
baseball management game & the ratings for the
catcher's arms in the data base seem way off.
If anyone's got a neat little formula for figuring
this out, boy, that would be cool.
Thanks Much,

I have six sets of tickets available for Giants games at AT&TPark this season. They are Premium
Lower Box seats in Section 105, Row 10, seats 7 and 8. They are just
beyond the infield on the first base side and offer an excellent cross-the-diamond
view as well as the opportunity to go after foul balls. The seats are
$37, $74 for the pair, which is the season ticketholder price. Equivalent
seats bought through the box office would sell for $42 to $60, depending on the
day of the week and whether it’s a “premium” opponent
(Dodgers, A’s, Yankees). The dates are:
Subject: [NorCalSABR] SABR Elections - and other news
Dear Friends: Please make sure to vote and return your SABR ballot that is in the current newsletter. Remember that our own Paul Hirsch is running for Director.
Also, look for the Pinpoint Documents advertisement - not only is it a clever ad, but a great service for those of you who need any kind of document/article delivery. Tony Landolt is a local chapter member..and he's also responsible for my becoming a member and active in the association.
Hoping to see you at the Krevsky Gallery Tour on Thursday, April 19, from 4-5. Gallery at 77 Geary in San Francisco.
Let's support our own in all the ways we can! Hope you've had a chance to get out to the ballpark and enjoy the real thing.
Dear SABR members,
I second Marlene's suggestion that you vote in the
SABR election in the most recent issue of the SABR
Bulletin. Please give the strongest of considerations
to Paul Hirsh, our local member, who has done a great
deal to benefit SABR.
Thanks, and Play Ball!

After retirement, I soon found that aerobic walking and volunteer work
at the Queens Central Library taping books for the blind were fine, but not nearly
enough to fill the long days and nights, and I searched for something else.
That something else took shape when a baseball-writing friend, the late
Lawrence Ritter, suggested I join the Society for American Baseball Research
(SABR).
Larry Ritter, by the way, was not only a retired college professor, but he
wrote what baseball experts deem the greatest book ever written on the
“Grand Old Game” — a marvelous book titled, “The Glory
of Their Times.”
In SABR, the hot stove league’s fires burn all year ’round, and
those pot-bellied stoves never run out of coal.

Gentlemen,
The league office and league statistician for the Pacific Coast League are not sure which PCL games have ever lasted five or more hours, or 20 or more innings, or ended after 1 AM, and which doubleheaders have ever lasted 25 or more innings.
I have conducted research on this topic for the past 44 years, since 1963, but I know for certain that I'm missing many such games from your league. As you can see, there are only two such events listed in the past two decades. There MUST have been many other such events in the history of your league.
Is there any possibility that you could please have your team's statistician review this list, and let me know the details of your games which are missing from the list?
Thank you VERY much for your help.

Great meeting yesterday, and thanks for a few minutes to talk. However, I need to make a correction. The uniwatch website is www.uniwatchblog.com . Again, it is run by Paul Lucas, a writer from New York, who also has the uniwatch column on www.espn.com Page 2 every few weeks. In addition to online discussions of uni's, there are alot of links to great sites like: "Dressed to the Nines" (SABR member Mark Okkonen's BB uni history, which is now part of the BB HOF), the Society for Sports Uniform Research (SSUR), MLB and MiLB logo histories; NHL and NFL uni history sites, and much more.
The other site is www.ballparkwatch.com , run by SABR member Kevin Reichard. It's a daily record of news stories related to the biz side of building ballparks, stadiums and arena. Kevin has also published several related books (The Complete Guide to Big League Ballparks and TCGT Spring Training). I asked Linda, our tourguide, if I could get any press release the Giants may issue about the seating increases.
Both websites are, of course, free, and alot of fun.
Fellow Lefty O'Doul Chapter SABR members:
I'm Barry Koron, Gene Sunnen's partner in his Giants seats, and I'm
the Commissioner of Baseball.
Before you conclude that I've taken leave of my senses, I'll hasten to
point out that I'm the Commissioner of Baseball for Simnasium, Inc., a
new Bay Area company, and the baseball I'm talking about is a
historical fantasy game, Simnasium Total Baseball. You can read more
about it at
www.simnasium.com
If you're familiar with Tom Tippett, you know that he's a leading
sabermetrician whose presentations at SABR conventions are always
interesting and original. He invented Diamond Mind Baseball, and
Simnasium Total Baseball is basically Diamond Mind online with career
player coding.
I'd like to give all NorCal SABR members a free Simnasium Total
Baseball team to play around with. Here's how you get your free team:
Register for an account at the site, and then write to
support@... and let us know you're here. We will credit
your account with a free team and, in addition, you will also qualify
for our 2-for-1 program for your first purchase.
Give it a shot, and see what you think. We'd be very interested in
your thoughts and suggestions. Though we already think it's the best
baseball sim on the market, we'll always want to make it even better,
and we'd love to have the input of the people who really know about
baseball.
Thanks for reading.

Hi all,
Here's the info on our March 3 lunch. Thanks to Michael Kennedy for the
great flyer. It's great to have a professional making these flyers!
Please rsvp to me if you have any questions, or if you plan to attend, so we
will have a rough head count. Thanks!
John
Sending this under my wife's name cause that's the way the e-mail is set up right now.
Ed Carroll, a friend of my wife's son, is conducting a research project on Stan Hack as part of the Public History Program at CSUS. He's looking for source material. I gave him what was referenced at baseballindex.org.
Is there a Stan Hack expert in the local chapter of SABR? If there is (and willing to help), (s)he could either contact me at helander@... or Ed directly at twain170@....

I'm interested in the game tix and the FanFest. The
Oakland A's FanFest last weekend was my first FanFest
event, and it was fun. We went with my buddy Doug and
his wife and it was a blast. I'm sure the All-Star
FanFest will take it up a notch. Also, I work for
AT&T; does that pull any weight at the ol' ballyard?

Anyone have info on "coupons" or discounts for the All-Star FanFest?
"Coupons" are mentioned when placing orders for FanFest tix.
BTW, I wonder why it is so difficult to get to info on the 2007 All-Star game on
both the
Giants and the MLB sites.

Rats. Rich Macaluso and I share in a larger group and get 7 games each, and I just bought 4 more from another guy. I'll let other folks know about these. Can I maybe buy 2 or 3 games?
Subject: Re: [NorCalSABR] Giants' season ticket plan
I belong to a group that has good, inexpensive season tickets to the SF Giants. We are looking forward a fan or two to buy 6, 10, or 20 pairs of tickets for our seats in section 320, row 2.
The tickets are $18.85 per ticket. Please respond to me at gsunnen@yahoo.com if you are interested.
