Jimmie Johnson has chance to clinch title in Phoenix

Although Jimmie Johnson lost more than half his lead on Mark Martin at Texas, he still has a chance to clinch the title this weekend at Phoenix. Johnson needs to lead the driver second in the standings by at least 195 points after the race. Johnson holds a 73-point lead on Martin, with Jeff Gordon 112 points behind. To clinch at Homestead, Johnson can average a fourth-place finish in the final two races and it won't matter where anyone else finishes.

Well, at least he got a bit more serious and discovered that the original track he had planned to test at has been closed for two years!! LOLOL!!!

Michael Waltrip serious about former F1 drivers NASCAR test

Michael Waltrip Racing officials say the team is serious about the upcoming NASCAR test for former Toyota F1 driver Jarno Trulli. Trulli will be driving a Sprint Cup series Toyota Camry on 16 and 17 November at the half-mile New Smyrna Speedway in Florida, a test that he has stressed he will be doing just for fun. Mika Salo, also a former Toyota driver in the team's debut season in Formula 1, will be joining him. Team owner Michael Waltrip is taking the opportunity to run Trulli in one of his cars seriously, even while reminding that the Italian's intentions are initially just to sample stock cars and ovals for the first time. He says, however, that as any other driver, Trulli may want to be able to perform well on his maiden NASCAR outing. "He just wants to try it out," Waltrip told AUTOSPORT. Subject: [NoBarNascar] Montoya insists NASCAR is best series around

Juan Pablo Montoya says the racing in NASCAR is better than any other series he's competed in. Montoya, who has competed in various series, including Formula One and Indy Car, lends a different perspective to the debate. "I think people that complain about a NASCAR race, they haven't watched anything else of motor racing," Montoya said Tuesday. "Honestly, if you don't like what you're seeing, you shouldn't be seeing it because it's the greatest racing you can have in any motorsport scene. It doesn't get any better than this."

Turner Motorsports has announced Ricky Carmichael has signed a multi-year contract with the organization to drive the No. 31 Chevrolet in the final two Camping World Truck Series races of the 2009 season and full time in 2010.

In an effort to gain maximum seat time, Carmichael also will compete in 10 ARCA RE/MAX Series races throughout the 2010 season.

"I'm very excited about having the opportunity to compete full time in the Truck Series next season for Turner Motorsports," Carmichael said. "To compete every week and gain as much seat time as possible is the only way that I will be able to get better as a driver.

"The Truck Series is a great place to learn and the racing is very competitive, no matter which track we go to. On top of the Truck schedule next year, we will run 10 ARCA races and possibly some Nationwide Series races which will give me some extra time in these stock cars. The two races that we will run this year at Phoenix and Homestead will definitely give us a chance to start getting everything ready for 2010 and I'm pumped about the future."

Carmichael, 29, made his Truck Series debut this season and has two top-10s in 16 races for Kevin Harvick Inc. The former motocross champion made the switch from two wheels to four in 2007, competing in a partial schedule in the Florida FASCAR Series before joining Ken Schrader Racing in the NASCAR Camping World East Series the following year."To have a driver with as much talent as Ricky is something that every owner wants to have," Turner Motorsports co-owner Steve Turner said. "Ricky has accomplished a lot in his motocross career and he has the determination and passion to have just as much success in his stock-car career. It's an exciting addition for our Turner Motorsports team and the two races this season will give us a head start heading into 2010."

Turner Motorsports made its series debut this past weekend at Texas, with driver Scott Wimmer capturing a 13th-place finish. The newly formed Truck team had been competing on a part-time basis in the USARacing Pro Cup Series.

Officials of the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) have announced that the 105-inch wheelbase chassis currently used in the NASCAR Nationwide and NASCAR Camping World East and West Series has been approved for competition in 2010 in the ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX.

The 105-inch wheelbase chassis will be approved for ARCA competition at all tracks except the restrictor plate venues of Daytona Int'l Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway. The newly approved wheelbase chassis will see action on-track alongside the current 110-inch wheelbase cars at 19 of the series' 21 races in 2010, with a rules package designed to create parity between the 105- and 110-inch cars. Outwardly, all cars will bear the same sheet metal configuration as the present lineup including Chevrolet Monte Carlo and Impala SS, Dodge Charger, Ford Fusion and Toyota Camry body styles. The ARCA base rules package of 3400 pound, steel-bodied stock cars with corresponding auto manufacturer engine and body configuration will remain in place.

The timing of the approval coincides with the gradual exit of the present-day 105-inch wheelbase chassis from the Nationwide Series. NASCAR has announced the introduction of the Car of Tomorrow (COT) into the Nationwide Series in 2010, beginning with the July race at Daytona Int'l Speedway. By the end of next season, the Nationwide Series is scheduled to have transitioned exclusively to use of the COT for 2011.
"Since the inception of our series in 1953, we've kept an open line of communication with NASCAR and others to monitor industry trends," said ARCA President Ron Drager. "At the time of the evolution of the NASCAR Sprint Cup COT technology, ARCA team owners represented a market for NASCAR team owners to sell the racecars they were cycling out of inventory. We're positioned to accommodate a similar situation with the NASCAR Nationwide team owners. We've invested a great deal of research and interaction into this move with several groups, in particular our ARCA team owners, and we feel this is the right step with the proper timing for everyone involved."

Currently, the only chassis approved for use in ARCA is the 110-inch wheelbase car, which the series has campaigned exclusively since 1985. ARCA experienced an influx of racecars as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series transitioned to the COT technology in 2007.

The 2010 ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX kicks off at Daytona Int'l Speedway on Saturday, Feb. 6, with the 47th running of the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200.

NASCAR announced today that two NASCAR Nationwide Series teams have been fined and penalized due to rule violations discovered during this past weekend’s event at Texas Motor Speedway.

Jason Ratcliff, crew chief of the No. 18 Toyota driven by Kyle Busch, has been fined $5,000 and placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31, 2009 for violating Section 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-I (any determination by NASCAR officials that the race equipment used in the event does not conform to NASCAR rules) and 20A-2.3A (improperly attached weight) of the 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series rule book.

Busch also was penalized with the loss of 25 NASCAR Nationwide Series championship driver points while Joe Gibbs was docked 25 NASCAR Nationwide Series championship owner points.

The infractions were discovered Nov. 5 during opening-day inspection.

Additionally, Brad Parrott, crew chief of the No. 09 Ford driven by John Wes Townley, has been fined $5,000 and placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31, 2009 after he was found to be in violation of Section 12-1, 9-4-A (crew chief assumes responsibility for the actions of his/her driver, car owner and crew members) and 12-4-I (unapproved panhard bar adjustment during impound by a team member).
The infractions occurred on Nov. 7 during pre-race inspection.

Both John Force and Kurt Johnson have impressive winning streaks on the line heading into the Auto Club NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway.

Force has won at least one NHRA Full Throttle Series event dating back to 1986 and Johnson carries a 14-year streak into the season finale.

"John Force and I are in the same boat," said Johnson, who is a three-time Pro Stock winner at the NHRA Finals. "We've been in this situation before. We came into the last race in 2002 needing a win and we got it done. You really don't think too much about it throughout the year because you're busy just going from race to race and trying to be competitive."

While Johnson came close to winning in 2009 after he lost in the finals at Firebird International Raceway back in February, the same can not be said for Force.

This season marks the first time since 1984 that Force has yet to make a final round. In fact, that same season marked the last time Force lost more rounds than he won. He is 22-23 in 2009.

Force has made six semifinal appearances in 2009 but has yet to visit the Winner's Circle, a winless streak that dates back to Heartland Park Topeka in June 2008.
"We do want to win, that's why you come, without that it doesn't matter the money you make, and there's not a lot of money being made in this economy right now," Force said. "If you have to have a dream, a need to win, that's what it's all about. We just got to stay focused and go out there and come out of the box."

Force does have two cars in contention for the Funny Car championship and all Robert Hight needs to do to take the crown is maintain at least a 101-point lead over teammate Ashley Force Hood through qualifying.

But with teammates running for the championship, Force knows the game plan in order for all four of his cars to have a shot to win.

"I've got two cars running for the championship," Force said. "We got to all qualify in the top so we can stay away from each other so we all get a chance to win that race."

Force's 12 wins at Auto Club Raceway are three times more than the next winningest Funny Car driver. Johnson is a four-time winner at ACR.

Harvick: Johnson's record would be right with Petty's 200 wins

If Jimmie Johnson manages to hold onto the lead and motor into history, which he can do by finishing fourth or better over the final two races, where should the feat rank in NASCAR annals? As big as Richard Petty's 200 career wins? Bigger? "I would say both are incredible feats, but I think (Petty's) 200 wins is far, far ahead of winning four in a row," said Hall of Fame driver/owner Junior Johnson, who was Yarborough's car owner during the record stretch. Kevin Harvick disagrees. "I think it has to be right there (with Petty's record)," Harvick said. "Obviously, Richard Petty has done a lot for the sport. But I don't think he'd win 200 races today. The way they raced back then, they had a lot more opportunities because they raced a lot more races to make that number what it is. "I'm not saying the sport wasn't hard back then. But winning four championships today, I wouldn't really think that was possible."

85 points largest deficit ever overcome

Jimmie Johnson finished a season-worst 38th and saw his lead trimmed to 73 points over Mark Martin, who finished fourth. The largest deficit ever overcome with two races remaining occurred in 1992 when Alan Kulwicki trailed by 85 points, but edged Bill Elliott for the Cup title by just 10 points, making it the second closest points battle in series history. Right now, 178 points separate Johnson from fifth-place Tony Stewart. It's not likely but possible that Johnson could clinch the championship on Sunday at Phoenix. He would need to gain 122 points.

Bill Elliott's 13-year-old son has bright racing future

Bill Elliott's son, Chase, captured the Georgia Asphalt Series championship last week. The 13-year-old, who drives the Bill Elliott Racing Ford, had two wins, six top fives and nine top 10s in the 2009 GAS season. The Elliott boy also won Rookie of the Year honors. Chase is still at least three years away from competing in any form of NASCAR racing.

"But we're serious about the test, Toyota is supporting it, our team, engineers, everybody is into the test. We will give it all the effort that we would give to any test.

No Todd, I am not describing myself!  I have seen other woman do this!  I will speak for myself, and that is what I was doing!  I have my op ions just as much as the rest of you.  If you thought I was insulting my own sex, then believe what you want.  I know how I feel about women in Nascar!  Never talked about Junior being God!!!!  You may think its funny, but it shows how inhuman this group is.  You need Punkin over here to straighten it out!

I also wonder what Nell would think if I told her that there is a female with the Earnhardt name that used to race and that also still does race every so often. Does she also have no business racing?

    Speaking of Jr........

Just heard Danica is in the final negotiations with DEJr
motorsports on a nationwide ride for 2 yrs.Jaime Little had
the best and most insightfull comment on the subject. She
said" Danica is the Dale Earnhardt Jr. of The IRL".Isn't
that really the truth since both suck at racing yet can make
millions for really doing nothing at all. Just my opinion     lol

Junior will win in Texas, because I will be cheering him on!  I heard on our local news last night that their will be over 170,000 people at TMS for the races.  They were interviewing the track owner, and he said that was how many tickets were sold.  I cannot wait to see them race.

Carl Edwards is a three-time winner at Texas. The only other repeat winner is Jeff Burton with two wins.   Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Mark Martin, and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. have all won at Texas, as have Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman. That’s all six HMS (or HMS-powered) teams that have won in the big state. In fact, this is where Junior won his first Cup race.
Ten of 17 Texas races have been won from starting in the top five, and Matt Kenseth’s #17 won from the furthest back in the field after starting 31st.   Last year’s November race at Texas had its lowest attendance on record, and while it’s expected to be about the same this year, it will still have a showing of more fans than any other Chase race.
More than 88 million dollars has been awarded in purse money for the 17 races held at Texas. On Sunday the purse will exceed $7.3 million.   Though master promoter Eddie Gossage runs the place, the track is one of Bruton Smith's. Together they gained favor of season ticket holders when they mailed out thousands of new coolers for fans to bring to the track after NASCAR banned them at ISC-owned venues, post 9/11.
The fastest pole speed was set in 1996 by Brian Vickers with a speed of more than 196mph. He finished 27th.   ZZ Top will perform a pre-race concert this year at Texas. Lest anyone get the idea that Talladega has the most loyal infield fans, Eddie Gossage had this to say when he arrived at work Monday morning: “Drove into work this morning and there are thousands of people who pulled their campers into the parking lot over the weekend. As Bill Murray said, ‘What's this? A surprise party??!! For me??!! ’ After 30 years of doing this I still get pumped up!!!” That is fan loyalty, and that is a man blessed with a job he loves!
Only one sponsor (Office Depot) has been to victory lane more than once at Texas. This will be the fifth fall race at Texas, but the last sponsored by Dickies, the first (and only) sponsor of the November race.
