Regarding Marty Bergen, there is an excellent article in Sports Illustrated by
William Nack dated June 4, 2001 that gives a pretty good background of I
believe the SI archives are open to everyone at SI.COM.(link to the story below.
You may have to copy and paste). The Worcester Gazette of January 19th and
beyond also has the actual news accounts.

A very good list. Players to add:
Marty Bergen (North Brookfield) - catcher with Boston Beaneaters who
was plagued by personal problems in his life and wound up killing his
wife, two children and then himself in 1900.
Bill Bergen (North Brookfield) - brother of Marty; also a catcher who
had the ignominity of having the lowest batting average in major league
history - nearly 15 seasons.
Pat Moran (Fitchburg) - manager of the 1919 Cincinnati Reds, who won
the World Series against the "Black Sox".

Did you get an e-mail from Seamus Kearney, one of our SABR members, suggesting that you contact Troy Soos? Troy is a former New Englander, a former physicist now a teacher and writer of mysteries and nonfiction. He did a book on early baseball in New England. He now lives in Winter Park, Florida. Kensington is the publisher of his mysteries; they may be able to put you in touch with him.

Hello all, I am exhibit coordinator and Worcester Historical Museum and we are in the process of putting together an exhibit on Worcester baseball greats. the exhibit will open in June of this year and will be accompanied by an exhibit on loan from the Charles Shulz Museum in CA called "Peanuts @ Bat". We are excited about both of these exhibits.
We would like to work with the local SABR group on who we should talk about in our Worcester Baseball exhibit. We know about J. Lee Richmond, The Worcesters and Ernest Thayer but we are hoping that you can direct us to some more notable Worcester County baseball greats. At this point we are looking for the TOP 10 greatest players/managers/ owners/ influences out of Worcester County.
If you have any questions or would like to contact me: Vanessa Bumpus. Exhibit Coordinator, 508.753.8278 x109 or vanessabumpus@worcesterhistory.net.
The SABR Boston Chapter will hold its next meeting on Saturday, April 11, 2009, at the Baseball Tavern, 1270 Boylston Street, Boston, one block from Fenway Park. The feature on the agenda is a presentation and panel discussion on the newly published "Lefty, Double X and the Kid." The agenda is packed full of topics that will be of interest to all baseball fans, so don't miss this opportunity to celebrate Opening Day Week! Lunch is available at the Tavern, and Boston plays the Angels at 4pm. Hang around a while after the meeting and catch the game at the Tavern.

Hi,
I'm looking for some help from someone who has access to the archives of the
Boston Globe through Proquest.
Back when we all got access to the Globe as part of our SABR membership, I
collected 4-5 articles for a project I am still working on. I carelessly wrote
down quotes from each article without keeping track of the dates.
So that's what I'm looking for help with--locating the dates of these articles I
found.
I know you can enter a phrase from the article in the search box and that should
call up the article. I could do it myself in 10 minutes...but I live in the
midwest and unfortunately there's no access to the Globe via Proquest around
here.
If you can help, please shoot me an email at jff110@...
Thank you,
James

Announcement of Their Next Meeting
The Cy Young Birthday & Spring Training-To-Opening Day Meeting
On Saturday, March 29, 2008, 10:30 AM to 4 PM the Boston Chapter of SABR
will meet to celebrate Cy Young's 141st birthday and to get everyone revved
up as Boston starts working toward their next World Series sweep.
The meeting will be held once again at The Baseball Tavern, 1270 Boylston
Street, Boston, one block from Fenway Park. The location has become very
popular with everyone who has attended the last two meetings. Having a look
at the McGreevy collection all around the second floor meeting room is alone
worth the trip.
The committee is now working on the program lineup. Stay tuned for more
information regarding the program agenda as plans unfold.
We will also be offering the popular Ten-Minute Presentations, and anyone
who wants to join in please let me know. Time slots are limited so volunteer
early!
If you have an item to donate to the raffle table, we would greatly appreciate
it.
Books, autographed baseballs, or any memorabilia you've outgrown, lost
interest in or no longer have space for will go a long way toward helping the
Boston Chapter keep up with expenses.
So mark your calendar, Saturday March 29, at The Baseball Tavern, and be
there for another memorable gathering and to wish Cy Young a happy 141st
birthday.

The Chicago Evening Post indulges in the following prophecy:
HE'LL BE PITCHING STILL
On the morning of the Judgment, when friend Gabriel calls the game,
He'll be somewhat disappointed when he cries one famous name;
For in all those countless legions who will answer to the roll,
There will be one fellow missing and may peace be on his soul.
There will be one man too busy to come in and learn his fate;
He'll be working while the others try to horn in past the gate;
For when Gabriel toots his trumpet and we all rise from the hay,
Old Cy Young will not be present he'll be pitching ball that day.

I am a rising Senior at Trinity College in Hartford, CT and am extremely passionate about baseball. I recently purchased a SABR membership and hope to be an active member.
I am very interested in issues pertaining to Asia, specifically China, and am also a huge baseball enthusiast. I have recently began researching baseball in China and am very interested in the cultural and socio-political conditions surrounding the development of baseball in the country.
I will be a Senior at Trinity College in Hartford, CT this fall and hope to follow my passions of baseball and Asian affairs upon my college graduation in May of 2008. It would be a dream to work for an baseball organization, team, or federation, possibly with an international scope. Do any of you have any suggestions or recommendations? Can I provide you with a resume to help you further understand my background?
Recently, I was presented with the unique opportunity to apply for a Fulbright Scholarship. If you are not familiar with the Fulbright Program, it allows students to travel and research a topic of their choosing. I am very interested in Chinese affairs; I have significant experience with the region through previous internships and classes and have studied Mandarin Chinese for six years. Also, I am extremely passionate about baseball and played at Trinity during my Freshman and Sophomore years. Therefore, I would be very interested in researching the emergence and development of baseball in China as my project.
I would enjoy the opportunity to discuss this topic with this group further, either through continued e-mails or via the phone. Do you have any contacts or resources (books, articles, websites, etc.) which could help me assemble a substantial project proposal?
Any help, feedback, or suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.

I hope to remain in touch. Please e-mail me at my main account, Ryan.Hutzler@trincoll.edu <mailto:Ryan.Hutzler%40trincoll.edu> .
I am a rising Senior at Trinity College in Hartford, CT and am extremely
passionate about baseball. I recently purchased a SABR membership and hope to be
an active member.
I am very interested in issues pertaining to Asia, specifically China, and am
also a huge baseball enthusiast. I have recently began researching baseball in
China and am very interested in the cultural
and socio-political conditions surrounding the development of baseball in the
country.
I will be a Senior at Trinity College in Hartford, CT this fall and hope to
follow my passions of baseball and Asian affairs upon my college graduation in
May of 2008. It would be a dream to work for an
baseball organization, team, or federation, possibly with an international
scope. Do any of you have any suggestions or recommendations? Can I provide you
with a resume to help you further understand my background?
Recently, I was presented with the unique opportunity to apply for a Fulbright
Scholarship. If you are not familiar with the Fulbright Program, it allows
students to travel and research a topic of their
choosing. I am very interested in Chinese affairs; I have significant experience
with the region through previous internships and classes and have studied
Mandarin Chinese for six years. Also, I am extremely passionate about baseball
and played at Trinity during my Freshman and Sophomore years. Therefore, I would
be very interested in researching the emergence and development of baseball in
China as my project.

Would be interested in reading accounts from SABR members
who can take in a game.
Should be some really good talent up there this year, ie 2007
Major League Baseball First Year Players Draft: Record 202 Former CCBL Players
Selected..
Received a hardcopy of ‘Summer Stars’ in today’s
mail. Here’s their online presence.
It is much cheaper, better for the environment, and you are bound to meet far more interesting people than you would on a Delta commuter flight.
A Boston to Saint Louis bus ride takes about 25 hours. A seven day advance ticket will cost you a mere 108 dollars for the round trip.

The Boston SABR Chapter regrets the resignation of their Chairman, Seamus
Kearney, who, apparently would rather be in Philadelphia. Therefore, the
Phillies' gain is our loss. We all wish Seamus the best as he advances on to
retirement and although he will still albeit from afar root for the Red Sox, we
will grant him the privilege of helping Philadelphia in their pursuit of, at
the
very least, the NL East pennant.
Filling such a significant gap in the Boston Chapter was not an easy task.
After a prolonged period of negotiations, compromises and general gnashing
of teeth, an agreeable plan was arrived at for the Seamus Replacement. The
decision was made for a Co-Chairmanship, aka the Coco-Chairmanship of
Boston SABR (a crisp decision that will not lowell our standards but drew alot
of hot air and won't cost us a shilling).
Three persons have agreed to somehow fill the role and will make a strong
commitment to carry on the great programs that Seamus started.
Dan Desrochers, Joanne Hulbert and David Laurila each bring varied
experience to the table, and invite all interested persons to become involved
in Chapter activities.
The first issue of interest is considering new and unique locations for
meetings. For the past few years, we have gathered at the Friends
Meetinighouse in Cambridge, a location that has served us very well.
Although we may not abandon the location, we are considering other
locations and invite suggestions. A few so far have included the Lowell
Spinners ballpark and the John Harvard Brewpub.
Also, the Hot Stove meetings in Cambrdige during the winter have been
popular. Similar meetings in other locations could easily be organized if just
a few members get together at other locations.
Work is still on-going with several projects nearing completion. The 1918
Red Sox book is coming along and the 1950s is still a work in progress.
Recently Bill Nowlin has suggested a 1939 Red Sox book.
Members of the Boston Chapter, and any interested persons beyond the
Boston area, are encouraged to let your thoughts, opinions and suggestions
known. Please contact us, we are open to new ideas.

Hi SABR colleagues,
May 20, 2007 at 3 p.m. - The Rutland Historical Society (Rutland,
Vermont) will have a brief program and not-so-brief round table on the
1938-41 Rutland Royals. The Society's website is www.rutlandhistory.com.
The program will focus on the Historical Society's scrapbooks from this
period. However, all rutland baseball history and the Northern League
will be game for the round table.
Thanks ,
Chuck Piotrowski
