Hello group,
I live on the Outer Banks (Northern Outer Banks for you Emerald Isle
people!!) Nags Head/Kitty Hawk area. I have tons of scuba gear
(even have two underwater scooters to get to the "just off the
beach" wrecks nearby, but no regular scuba buddy.
Whenever somebody gets my way and wants to go play, drop me a line.
JacksonVegas@... put scuba in the subject!!
Thanks!!!
Jason
Please be advised that I check and approve every post due to the fact I
want to keep the spams down if at all possible if you done a dive
lately.
Please post a little report on it and any current conditions, also
any trip away would be nice and please post pictures if you have them
thanks
A brief report on conditions off shore NC:
Friday, 3 June - Discovery Diving - Capt's Lady
U-352 - Water temp 68F at surface, 72F on sub; vis - 20 feet
1+ knot current
Indra - Water temp 68F; vis - 2 feet
0 current
** Powerful storm at Hatteras on Thursday 2 June produced 60+ mph
winds gusts resulting in swells and reduced visability well into
Friday.
Saturday, 4 June - Discovery Diving - Sea Quest II
Papoose - Two dives. Water temp 68F; vis - 50 feet
0.5 knot current
5 mm wetsuit and hood is still suggested. Papoose was wonderful!
Dave--
Great conditions out at Frying Pan Light Tower last weekend.
Visibility was around 50 feet. Water temp is a nice 68F. Forget that
5mm and hood. A 3mm is just fine! There are 4 -5 resident Sand Tigers
around 7' that seem to have taken up residence as well as a few large
Amberjacks and Barracuda. Spearfishing is a not good idea at the tower
right now with this many sharkeys around. I saw an Amberjack get
speared and the sharks got a little fiesty right away.
Tried out a new charter service called Cape Fear Divers
(capefeardivers.com). Great boat with lots of room. I will be using
them again.
NAUI Instructors Doug Berry and Bob Decker (www.SportDiverHQ.com) escourted a group of recently certified divers form Boy Scout troop 597, Jacksonville, NC. Many of the Scouts in this troop have parents that are active U.S. Marines.
The group departed out of Morehead City aboard the charter boat, Midnight Express (www.olympusdiving.com). Mother Ocean was kind with very smooth seas, perhaps 1 foot waves. The boat did cross through a couple of small shower lines enroute to the dive site, but nothing at all significant. After a quick tie-in and thorough pre-dive briefing the group entered the water for a guided tour. Visibility at the wreck was around forty-feet, better nearer the surface. Bottom temperature was reported as 69* F. The temperature was noticeably warmer from 20 fsw to the surface.
These young divers were all very excited about what was for most of them their first NC Wreck dive. If you happen to encounter them on your travels be sure to congratulate them, encourate them as well as thanking them for the service their family members provide for us.
In case anyone is interested, scuttlebutt has it that the offshore waters at Papoose were clear, warm and blue yesterday. The other boat out of ODC was carrying a group of film professionals filming various locations around the world for an IMAX film. Glad I don't have to swim around with that monster of a housing! I knew IMAX cameras were big... just never registerd that they were quite THAT BIG!!
Hello everyone, Hope you are doing well. I am new to this group and
really enjoy all that I have read posted. I am from Wilmington NC and
have been diving for 15 years. I am a PADI Dive Master and have also
worked as a Rescue Divemedic. I had my share of great dives as well as
many that was not so great. I would love to meet new people to dive
with and to share information with.

Daer All,
Carolina Beach has a new dive charter operation which just started in
late May. This past weekend I joined Jim Conner, proprietor of the
operation, and the NC State Aquarium Dive Team for some Cape Fear
diving.
The website is www.capefeardivers.com. Charters and rentals can be
booked online. The boat is a brand new 2004 - 50-foot Newton Dive
Special. The boat is comfortable, well designed for diving and
provides some personal storage space. The short trip to Carolina
Beach makes potential for a single-day dive trip with no hotel
costs. Directions were easy - Hwy 40 East to the end – turn left -
0.1 mile to the marina.
Check out Jim's website for details on the boat and dive operation.
With flat seas and the small group this past weekend, it was hardly a
true test - but with those conditions it is always a good day!

there boat :Hawksbill", she is a 50 foot Newton Dive Special. With a
weight of 17 tons and a beam (width) of 16 feet, the Hawksbill is an
exceptionally stable ride and dive platform. She is powered by twin
370 HP turbocharged Yanmar diesels driving 22" by 22" four blade
Nibral propellers.I will say a very stable boat and lots of room.
Crew was very nice and Help full , was safety oriented and always
seem to know who was in the water and who wasn't.
I would highly recommend these folks .
and there prices are very reasonable.
oh for the one's that don't have them a safety sausage and whistle
are required !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And don't forget to ask for this saves money !!!
(Ask about our Frequent Diver Card. With the Card, dive five two
tank dives with us, and your sixth dive is free! (The card's free,
you just have to ask for it).

there wear opening on the boat last time I checked these are premier

8/29/2005 my buddy Jeff and I headed for the Cassimir in his vessel.
The seas were still pretty rough in the morning.....courtesy of that
darn hurricane. It was a little too rough for the Cassimir, and the
waves were head-on. So....we altered course to head for the Gill
(WR4). Sargassum and flying fish and azure blue water all the way
out. We anchored in....and when I looked down the anchor line.....it
went on forever.
John D. Gill-----84 degrees on the surface....went through a layer
and slight thermocline at 80 fsw....vis was unlimited above that
layer. Below the layer vis was 50-60 ft temp was 79 at 95 fsw. Saw
2 really big nurse sharks....really big. Saw 4-5 Sandtiger sharks,
but they were really skiddish....couldn't approach them at all. The
Gill seems to have decayed even more since I dove it earlier in the
summer.. As we surfaced/decompressed from this dive, and ascended
above the layer at 80 fsw, there were hundreds...maybe thousands of
big barracuda schooling just above that layer. They were acting a
little weird, and were braver than normal. They were really acting
wierd.....scary weird. I could see the boat 70 feet above us.
Once we broke the surface we saw that the seas had laid down, I mean
the ocean looked like a mill pond. We did some figuring and
calculations, and figured we could run to the Cassimir, and still
make it home on our fuel load. So... we pulled anchor and hauled to
the Cassimir.
Cassimir----84 degrees on the surface....went through a layer and
major thermocline at 90 fsw....vis above the layer was unlimited.
Below the layer vis was 30-40 ft. The temp dropped to 71 degrees at
120 fsw. Very cold, a shocking thermocline in a 3 mm.
We swam the whole wreck, didn't find anything. My computer....brand
new.....went wacko on me....so had to revert to backup plan on
tables.....and ended the dive early.
Hi folks—Jim Conner here....rode out the hurricane on the boat in
port. Pretty interesting, not much sleep for two days, but the
mighty Hawksbill came through it without a scratch!
To celebrate, we're going diving!! What could be more appropriate?
This Sunday, diving fanatic Jim Dyke has organized a THREE tank
trip. Two dives on the Gill, and one on the Hyde. Marine forecase
is excellent. This should be great! Sounds like a long day, but
actually, because it's not a long trip to the Gill, and we'll use the
second surface interval to travel back to the Hyde, it's no longer a
day than a two dive trip to the Tower or the City of Houston. As
always, sign up on line. We're limiting it to 12 divers because of
the extra tanks, and only 4 spots left.
Saturday's trip is the Ocean Conservancy Reef Cleanup trip to the
Hyde and Markham. Good chance to give back to the ocean. However,
perhaps because people are waiting out the hurricane, signups are
very light. Need a few more to make the minimum.

I would like to ask everyone as they suggest to email MGM home

this is the direct message page of MGM where you can make your

ask
him to throw in a good word to MGM about the dvd releases. Here is

Well just returned from a good trip to Cozumel, Have to admit they
wear hit real hard with the Katrina.
I have to say the reefs wear hit real Hard and fish Life is down but
still good.
They People are working real hard to get things up and running, reef
club will be open some time in June. The reef life is coming back and
the water is warm still good spot just not as good, will probably be
several more years before returns to normal.
I would like to thank Rita for the wonderful time from
http://www.albatroscharters.com/
once again she was great and spoiled us like no other charter does ,
much food , drinks , fruits ect provided the Morning of dives and in-
between dives. The stores are open and people friendly as before they
going to need our support to get back on there feet so please still
enjoy Cozumel.
I thought fellow divers might be interested in a new Internet based scuba diving
forum at
www.scubamagazine.net. Lots of photos, topics on just about everything, etc.My
favorite is
the really scary video of a huge sperm whale sneaking up on an ROV all caught on
video.
You can post any anouncements or events you might have to invite people who
aren't
members to join the club and go diving.
It's a great way to stealth promote this club to those who aren't a member.

The goal is to serve as a way for Area divers to get together for planning trips
both to local dive destinations and for longer distance tropical trips. We also
hope to provide a way where those of us of "like mind" can gather and PARTY. In
some cases, we actually do things together other than dive...and a few of us
would like to see the group plan ski trips, rafting trips, and trips of other
sorts... [read more]
