JR Motorsports Busch Series driver Mark McFarland suffered strained muscles in a late crash in Saturday's AT&T 250 at the Milwaukee Mile.

McFarland was running sixth after the last caution when the Kevin Harvick and J.J. Yeley, racing for second, made contact and set off a chain-reaction crash that included McFarland's No. 88 Chevrolet.

<A href="http://dc.bizjournals.com/event.ng/Type=click&amp;FlightID=15280&amp;AdID=22931&amp;TargetID=2667&amp;Segments=1,2877&amp;Targets=3394,2667&amp;Values=20,31,43,51,60,72,82,90,100,110,150,152,564,830,872,873,951,972,994,996,997,1009,1131,1198&amp;RawValues=GEOMAJORMETRO%2C%2CDOMAINTYPE%2C10&amp;Redirect=http://www.applyonlinenow.com/USCCapp/Ctl/entry?sc=MV00&amp;mc=A000001ZPZ" target="_top"></A>&nbsp;

At the infield care center, McFarland was determined to have strained muscles in his right shoulder. He was released and traveled back to North Carolina with his Dale Earnhardt Jr.-owned race team.

"There was nowhere to go," he said. "I thought I had it cleared, but a car came up and hit me, and then I got tagged by a couple more."

McFarland said his shoulder was sore, but that nothing was broken.

"I'll just try to take it easy for the next few days," he said.

The Busch Series races in the Winn-Dixie 250 at Daytona International Speedway Friday night.

Jeff Gordon announced his engagement to Belgian model Ingrid Vandebosch during the NASCAR weekend at Infineon Raceway.

Gordon, a four-time NASCAR Cup champion, said that he had been engaged for about a month but wanted to wait until he could tell family and friends in person. Gordon is originally from Vallejo, Calif.

"We kind of held onto it for a while until we were ready to tell people, and because we travel, we're just not typically in a place where you get a bunch of people together," he said.

Gordon added that he has a croquet event where he gathers friends and family and that was a "great opportunity for us to really make it public to everybody."

Gordon, whose career winnings top $76 million - was jokingly asked if Vandebosch was willing to sign a prenuptial agreement.

"You're going to have to ask her," he said.

Gordon was previously married to Brooke Sealy. The pair divorced in 2003.

First Lap Accident Ruins Debut for Marlin's Crew Chief

Sterling Marlin
SONOMA, Calif. (June 25, 2006) -- It was a nightmarish debut for Scott Eggleston, who took over the reigns as Sterling Marlin's crew chief earlier in the week.

On the first lap of his new job, Eggleston could only watch in shock as Marlin's car was collected in a multicar incident Sunday at Infineon Raceway, resulting in a 42nd-place finish in the Dodge/ Save Mart 350.

"Not much to say except we have a badly damaged racecar," said Eggleston, who was the crew chief for Marlin when he finished second at Infineon in 2000. "I didn't expect this kind of a start, but you never know in this business. I look forward to Daytona next week, we should be good there."

Marlin was equally distressed.

"What a disappointment," offered Marlin. "I really thought we could've gotten a solid finish today in the Waste Management Chevrolet. But unfortunately, things ended way too early for us."

As the 43-car Nextel Cup field entered Turn 8 on the 1.99-mile road course, the No. 21 car of Ken Schrader turned sideways, blocking the racetrack.

"I don't know what happened to Schrader, all I know is I had nowhere to go," said Marlin. "I looked up and saw him turned sideways-- I thought he was going one way so I went the other, then he shot across the track and I hit him.

"I was right behind Elliott (Sadler) and thought we were both clear. Then Elliott took a sharp left turn and all I saw was a windshield full of the 21. I just had nowhere to go."

Marlin was taken to the infield care center where he was observed and released. He compared the hit to his 2002 accident at Kansas Speedway that contributed to his season-ending neck injury.

"That was a pretty hard lick I took," said Marlin. "Luckily I'm in better shape than the Waste Management Chevy. We've had some tough luck this season, but we'll just roll up our sleeves and get on to next week."

The next Nextel Cup event will be Saturday night (July 1) -- the Pepsi 400 at Daytona International Speedway.

Childress and Harvick to Cook S'mores with Fans in Daytona

June 26, 2006 - Richard Childress, NASCAR Driver Kevin Harvick, and the No. 29 team plan to light up the infield at Daytona International Speedway with a S’mores campfire event.

Celebrating this quintessential summertime snack, Hershey’s will distribute more than 2,000 S’mores kits complete with graham crackers, marshmallows and Hershey’s milk chocolate bars, to fans arriving to celebrate race week. In addition, randomly selected kits will contain invitations to join Harvick, Childress and the crew for “S’more” family fun around the campfire.

Local Boy Scout Troops will get the campfire started; while Smoky the Bear looks on to ensure a safe party in the Fan Zone area inside Daytona International Speedway. A giant Hershey’s milk chocolate bar made completely of LEGOs will be created as a back drop the S’mores campfire experience.

Harvick will layer on the fun debuting a new Hershey’s paint scheme on the No. 29 Nextel Cup race car at the Pepsi 400 on Saturday, July 1.

Gilliland 32nd in Nextel Cup Debut

David Gilliland
David Gilliland
June 26, 2006 - The CJM Racing team accomplished their mission this weekend in the Dodge/Save Mart 350 at the Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. Driver David Gilliland qualified the No. 72 Dutch Quality Stone Dodge in the 31st position, the first time the Bryan and Tony Mullet owned entry had qualified for a NASCAR NEXTEL Cup event.

“We accomplished exactly what we came here to do,” sounded Gilliland. “We made the race, we finished the race and the car is in one piece. Hopefully this will give the guys some momentum and help jumpstart this new team. They are going about building this the right way and I see them enjoying success in the future.”

From the drop of the green flag it was evident that the car was not as balanced as the team would have liked. A tight condition made it difficult for Gilliland to make any moves on the cars in front of him. It was a problem that would last for the entire race.

“The car just would not turn,” said Gilliland. “We lost a lap trying to fix it, but we got it back. It was still tight.”

“We ended the race two laps down, but it was a great experience for everyone on this team. I think I gave some good feedback so CJM Racing can come back even more prepared. I got some seat time in these heavier cars and that should help me at Mexico City and Watkins Glen next year.”

The next race for CJM Racing will be the Winn-Dixie 250 presented by PepsiCo at the Daytona International Speedway. Kertus Davis will be behind the wheel of the No. 72 entry.

Jeff Gordon passed Terry Labonte on lap 88 of 112 and held off Ryan Newman in a three-lap sprint to the checkers to win Sunday’s Dodge/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway. It is Gordon’s first win of the season and ninth career road-course victory. Newman, Labonte, Greg Biffle and Kurt Busch rounded out the top-five finishers. Dale Earnhardt Jr. passed many cars in his #8 Budweiser Chevrolet on Sunday, but a tag-from-behind just past the halfway point and a last-lap spin took its toll as the Bud team finished 26th. As a result, Dale Jr. slipped one spot in the Nextel Cup point standings to fifth but is just eight points out of fourth and 16 out of third as the Cup Series heads to Daytona this Saturday.

Key Moments:
Starting 26th, Dale Jr.’s toughest adversary wasn’t any one competitor but the collective mid-pack traffic customary to road-course racing. Even so, he used patience and precision to steadily climb into the top-20 on two separate occasions in the early stages, the latter of which was a remarkable jump from 27th to 19th in only five green-flag laps. The Bud Chevy was in its highest position of the afternoon – 16th – and running lap times as quick as the leaders when it received a hearty shove from behind by Scott Pruett. The wreck forced Junior to make an untimely green-flag pit stop on lap 62 to repair damage, sending him back to 35th position and completely skewing the Bud team’s pit strategy. Still, Junior mounted a furious charge, taking a restart with three laps to go in 22nd and climbing as high as 19th on the final lap before a single-car spin knocked him back to where he started the day.

Dale Jr. Quotes:
“We struggled all day with the handle of the car. It’s frustrating when you know what you want the car to do, and it just doesn’t do it. We hurt ourselves by qualifying where we did. Track position is really important here, and from start to finish we never had it. I really wanted a good finish here, because we’ve had cars that were capable of a good finish, but today wasn’t our day. It’s frustrating, because even after all we had to go through, I was in position to salvage a decent finish and leave here with decent points. I don’t know what happened on the last lap. The car got loose and just ran out from under me. No idea why. It was the story of our afternoon. But we’ll get over it. We’ve got a big race coming up in Daytona this week. I always love going to Daytona, and it’s as good a place as any to get back on track.”

Best Radio Chatter:
Dale Jr.’s road-racing skills were put to a test on the very first lap, as he had to take evasive action to miss a massive six-car wreck that brought out the first of two red flags on the afternoon:
Dale Jr.: “Man, I can’t believe the 21 came back across the track like that… Was it just the 21 and 14 involved in that?”
Steve Hmiel (spotter): “You had the 14, 21, and 27. The 26 I think he just spun out.”
Dale Jr.: “Ten-four.”
Hmiel: “The 26 car is sitting there about 10 cars behind you… He spun out on the start, got caught up, and then spun in that mess over there… twice in one lap.”
Dale Jr.: “I got loose right there in front of (Tony) Junior taking the green. Don’t know what the deal was.”
Tony (Eury) Jr.: “The 42 and 07 were also involved. The 07 has the rear quarter panel tore off it.”
Dale Jr.: “Alright, thank you for that.”
Tony Jr.: “They’re blowing that corner off. It shouldn’t be much longer (under the red flag).”
Dale Jr.: “That’s cool. I just want to know who’s involved in crashes. The more I know, the more I feel in control of what’s happening.”

Between the restart on lap 41 and the third yellow flag on lap 46, Dale Jr. climbed from 27th to 19th.
Hmiel: “Caution is out, you’re clear. Pace car has â€em in turn two.”
Dale Jr.: “The car was pretty good there… Whups, I think talked on ya there, what did you say?”
Hmiel (borrowing a line from the movie Talladega Nights: “I said â€Shake and Bake, El Diablo!”
Dale Jr.: “Haha! Hell yeah! (Pause) You got it picking the front tires through high-speed fourth-gear corner… you got me good and snug, helped me out a lot. I’ll let you know on the forward-bite issue.”
Tony Jr.: “Ten-four. You shout it out when you come by here. I can hear you everywhere, so if you want to tell me what it’s doing before the next pit stop, just shout it out, and I’ll hear you, and I won’t bother you so much. You’ve done good, we’re back to where we were before we pitted, and we’ve tightened it up and we’ve got a better car.”

Having fought his way back from 35th position after a mid-race accident, Dale Jr. was in sizing up his chances for a decent finish during a red-flag period five laps from the checkers:
Dale Jr.: “Steve, are you around the 66 spotter?”
Hmiel: “I’m here with him, what do you want to say?”
Dale Jr.: “Well, I’m pretty good on tires. He can make it as hard as he wants to, or he can give (the position) up and I can make us some holes.”
Hmiel: “That’s pretty much the conversation we had.”
Tony Jr.: “Remember that speech I gave you about patience yesterday? You can throw all that out the window.”
Dale Jr.: “Yeah, I may have to do that… This is my life. It’s what I do. I’ve got to go for it.”

Robby Gordon’s Disappointing Day Ends With a 40th-Place Finish

Robby Gordon
Robby Gordon
Sonoma, Calif. (June 25, 2006) – Robby Gordon, widely regarded as one of the premier road-course racers in NASCAR Nextel Cup Series competition, came into the Dodge/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway convinced that this was the chance for the No. 7 team to end its winless streak. With top-10 runs in each of the weekend’s three practice sessions, the No. 7 Chevy would be a contender again at the 1.99-mile road course. After an unfavorable qualifying draw, Gordon would begin the day in the 14th position.

With an aggressive style that has earned him a reputation as one of the best road racers in the world, Gordon positioned the Menards/Energizer Chevy in third place by lap 15.

“Our race to lose, boys,” came over the radio as Gordon made his charge on the second place car of Ryan Newman. Shown as the fastest car on track at that point, Gordon would pass the No. 12 car with ease as he continued to hunt down the leader.

Running with the intention of only making two stops for tires and fuel during the 110-lap race, Gordon could not afford any issues on pit road. As he made his way to the pits on lap 28, he was comfortably in second place and in position to win his first NASCAR Nextel Cup race as a car owner. With what began as a routine stop for fuel and four fresh Goodyear tires, Gordon’s hopes would soon diminish as a miscue during the stop left him in eighth place after the rest of the field cycled through their green flag stops.

The issue on pit road would soon be compounded five laps later as side-by-side contact with the No. 60 of Boris Said would cause irreversible damage to Gordon’s No. 7 Menards/Energizer Chevy. With left front fender damage and the toe knocked in, Gordon struggled to keep the No. 7 Chevy running within the top 10 for the remainder of his day.

The problem eventually worsened to the point of creating a left-front tire failure on lap 75. As he headed to pit road he made contact with the wall breaking the tie rod, sidelining him for good with a 40th-place finish.

“We definitely beat ourselves this weekend,” said Gordon. “Between the mistake on pit road and Boris running into us, it seems that we just can’t catch a break these last couple of weeks. Without a doubt it was going to come down to us or the 24 (race winner Jeff Gordon), but they ran a mistake-free race and we didn’t. That’s why Jeff has won so many of these at Sonoma. It’s really disappointing that we couldn’t capitalize on that. Going from the fastest car on the track to barely being able to hang in the top 10 is just really disappointing.

“After the toe was knocked in, I just couldn’t catch the guys in front of me once they settled into their groove. It eventually worsened to the point were it caused the left front to go down. I was trying to take it easy coming in, but I turned right to make the right-hander coming onto pit road and it just didn't turn, it went straight into the wall. The tie rod broke and it ended any chance we had of coming out and even getting a top-15 finish.”

Gordon and the No. 7 Harrah’s Chevrolet will head to Daytona International Speedway to celebrate America’s birthday with some Saturday night racing at the official home of NASCAR. Catch coverage on Saturday, July 1 at 7:30 p.m. EDT on FOX. Radio coverage can be heard on national MRN affiliates beginning at 7:30 p.m. EDT.

Crossfade’s Ed Sloan to Sing National Anthem at Pepsi 400

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (June 26, 2006) – Ed Sloan, lead singer for Crossfade, one of the most powerful and inventive new hard rock bands around, will sing the National Anthem at the Pepsi 400 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at historic Daytona International Speedway on July 1.

Sloan, who grew up in Columbia, S.C., began piano lessons at age eight and within a few years was learning songs from the radio and from records. He joined his first band, Darkchilde, in the eighth grade. After several years of growing local notoriety, Sloan and company began playing the local circuit as The Nothing while he studied for his BS degree in computer science at the University of South Carolina. The group eventually renamed themselves Crossfade and gained recognition beyond its region ultimately leading to the signing of a record deal with the Earshot division of Columbia Records.

The band’s self-titled debut album was released in 2004 and entered the Billboard 200 best-selling albums chart in July of that year and spent 11 out of 12 weeks (October - December) as Billboard’s #1 Heatseekers album. “Cold,” the first single from Crossfade, made music history as radio’s #1 Most Played Rock Song of 2004. The track spent a record-breaking 65 weeks on the Active Rock chart while spending a record 46 weeks on the Modern Rock chart. Crossfade has performed on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” the “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” and the “Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,” among other television appearances.

“We’re delighted to have someone with the talent of Ed Sloan perform our Nation Anthem,” said Speedway President Robin Braig. “As you would expect, Daytona continues to attract top-notch talent to entertain our fans at the World Center of Racing.”

Crossfade are set to release their sophomore record, Falling Away, in August and will be touring the US shortly thereafter.

Tickets for the Pepsi 400 Weekend are available online at http://www.racetickets.com or by calling 1-800-PITSHOP.

Solid Road Course Run Turns Sour for Nemechek

Joe Nemechek
Joe Nemechek
SONOMA, Calif (June 25, 2006) -- Joe Nemechek was in position a couple of times to claim a strong finish in Sunday's Nextel Cup road race, but a spinout and takeout left him with a disappointing 25th-place finish at Infineon Raceway.

Nemechek, who qualified 10th, was running easily in the top 15, but on Lap 58 of 110 he spun as he was entering the tricky Turn 11 hairpin corner. The incident not only forced Nemechek to make an unscheduled pit stop, but it also sent his U.S. Army Chevrolet back to 30th place.

"That didn't help our cause at all," said Nemechek. "I thought we could still come back with a decent finish, but the last hit knocked the wind out of our sails."

Nemechek was referring to an incident with seven laps remaining in the Dodge/Save Mart 350. As he was swerving to avoid a multicar wreck in front of him, Nemechek got turned around after taking a hard hit by the No. 43 car (Kyle Petty).

"It wasn't Kyle's fault, it was just being in the wrong place and the wrong time," offered Nemechek. "I had fresh tires at that point of the race and was looking forward to gaining in track position. But that final hit pretty much ended any hopes of a decent result."

The frustration was evident for Nemechek, who once again left the Infineon road course feeling the result was not indicative of the performance by the U.S. Army team.

"This is the third straight year that a solid performance went south on us," noted Nemechek. "I love road course racing and feel bad that we didn't come away with a better finish for our team and for the soldiers defending our freedom. But there's next week and I can't wait for the superspeedway race at Daytona."

The Daytona International Speedway summer event, known as the Pepsi 400, will be contested Saturday night (July 1) at this historic 2.5-mile oval.

Jones 36th in No. 4 Chevrolet at Infineon

PJ Jones
PJ Jones
Sonoma, CA (June 25, 2006) – Morgan-McClure Motorsports and “road ringer” PJ Jones headed to the Napa Valley and the demanding Infineon Raceway, hoping to use the road course specialist’s skills to put together a solid finish in the Save Mart 350. Unfortunately, radiator damage and a broken rear end gear would leave the team with a disappointing 36th-place finish.

Tapped by Scott Wimmer to drive in the event, Jones immediately provided dividends as he qualified the #4 Aero Exhaust Chevrolet Monte Carlo in the 15th position, the team’s highest starting position of the season. After posting the 12th fastest speed in the final practice, the team was optimistic for a good finish on Sunday.

The race started off with Jones advancing to the 12th position by lap 11. Despite fighting a lack of rear grip, the Torrence, CA native continued to progress forward, achieving the eighth (8) position by the first pit stop on lap 30. Following a caution on lap 38, the decision was made to come down pit road to remove the tape from the front grille.

On the restart, Jones charged from the 27th spot to 21 but, on lap 46, while attempting to pass the #26 machine, the rear brakes locked up and forced Jones into the outside car, damaging the #4 Chevrolet. On lap 54 Jones brought the Aero Exhaust machine down pit road, as damage to the front of the car had allowed the water temperature to reach 270 degrees. After the Chris Carrier-led crew made the necessary repairs, the team returned to the track two laps down to the leaders in 38th position.

From this point, the team was determined to gain as many spots as possible over the final 40 laps. However, the day ended prematurely as on lap 103, the rear gear broke, resulting in the 36th place finish.

“I think we had a pretty good car," said Jones. "We got inside the top ten at the beginning, as high as eighth I think and it went down hill from there. I made a mistake getting into [Jamie] McMurry. The car was overheating from the beginning. We made a bad pit call and got in the back of the pack and just never did recover the track position.”

Jeff Gordon Takes First Win of Season at Infineon Raceway

JEFF GORDON, NO. 24 DUPONT MONTE CARLO SS, STEVE LETARTE, CREW CHIEF, AND RICK HENDRICK, OWNER, HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS (HMS) Race Winner:

JEFF GORDON: It was a great win. A lot of emotions because it's been a while. Obviously everybody has well documented that and reminded us many times. You know, I just had so much belief. I knew we had the right ingredients and we focused and put a lot of effort into this road course package last year. Not only did we have failures, but we got beat. We were getting beat on the racetrack.

We focused on those areas, making sure that we found some speed, as well. We were able to show that this weekend. It didn't come together too well in qualifying, and today we showed it. To come from 11th up to 1st was not easy to do today. Passing was tricky. Fortunately for us, the cautions came at the right time. At the end I didn't want to see any, but it was just a great day.

It just means so much to me and to the team to get back to victory lane and get that No. 1 in the season off of our shoulders. It's a relief. Now we can just go on and focus.

You have no idea how much pressure ?? I think it's for a lot of teams that have won, it's so important to get that first win of the season. Of course it couldn't happen a better weekend, too, because announcing an engagement and being here was a really special weekend for me all the way around; to be able to complete that with a win and go to victory lane, it's just fantastic. Everybody wants to get that first win when you know you're a Top 10 team and you know what you're out here to do week in and week out.

We struggled the last year, and even here at the road courses we were a 2nd to 4th place car, and we knew that just wasn't good enough for a team like ours. We tried to get it better. I was really proud of how we ran last week in Michigan and we didn't get the results and the finish that we were looking for. We've had that two or three times this year, so I was finally glad to come and get the results that we knew, we had the car and the pit crew and the team to do it.

Q. Can you tell us a little bit about how important it is for you now to be in the Top 10 and in the hunt again for the Chase?

JEFF GORDON: Well, it's important because we've had some trouble not last weekend, but when you look at Pocono and Charlotte and glitches that we've had the last month. At one time we were solidly in there because of consistency, and I attribute that a lot to a solid team. But performance?wise we weren't where we needed to be.

Then we had problems, and that really took us back in the points, so we needed ?? to me, you have to always put those behind you, you have to figure out how to do it better and fix the problem the next time, but you have to put it behind you and focus on the next race.

We've got a real string of races coming up that are very good for us, and this was the first one ?? maybe even last weekend, but this is the first or second one in a line of races that are tracks that we can really gain some points, get ourselves solidly back into that Chase. Nice to be in there right now but we're not solidly in there yet, and we need to take advantage of the tracks that we're good at that we can really capitalize on; here, Daytona next week, Bristol, short tracks and road courses, and then we've got to run like we did last week in Michigan at those mile and a half's. That was a very important race for us, as well. We finished 8th, but leading the most laps, it meant a lot to us.

Q. This is your first win here at Infineon, and with your induction into the Hall of Fame and your engagement to Ingrid Vandebosch, is this the best one yet?

JEFF GORDON: It's definitely the most emotional one for me. You know, it's just been a special weekend all the way around. I've got to admit, I got a little choked up riding around in the car with the checkered flag. I don't know if it was getting to victory lane for the first time this year, whether it was the excitement last night with announcing the engagement or the pressure of not winning so far this year or just the road course. I don't know what it was, but it was there, it was real, and it felt great and I was excited. I think I did one of the best burnouts I've ever done, so I'm proud of that. I don't know what's left in the engine or the car, but it was just great.

Just seeing the look on Steve's face and hearing his voice, I could just tell how much it meant to all the guys. He'll tell you, I never, never, never do this, I called him this morning at about 7:30, 8:00, and I said I've got two things for you: One, we're going to win the race today; and two, I'm engaged (laughter). I'm not sure which one impacted him the most, but I never do that, and I just for some reason had that feeling that it was going to happen today. I don't have that very often, but I had it all day today, and it's great.

Of course I didn't have it had halfway through the race. There was a point in the race where I was worried a little bit. We weren't catching some guys and in the position we needed to be in at the time, but it really came through.

Q. Can you tell us about the proposal and getting engaged and when all that happened, and the second question is is she willing to sign a prenup (laughter)?

JEFF GORDON: Well, she's here. Maybe she can come over and talk to you for a little while and answer those questions.

I think she knows that I'm a lot smarter the second time around (laughter). She's got a much better guy this time around, too, and I've got an amazing girl this time around, too.

I can't say there's any big story to the engagement, other than last night was ?? we've actually been holding this to ourselves for about a month, and we just ?? because we didn't do it the traditional way and get down on one knee and go to some fancy restaurant or the Eiffel Tower or something, we kind of held onto it for a while until we were ready to tell people, and because we travel, we're just not typically in a place where you get a bunch of people together, and fortunately for me, I have a little croquet event ?? you can get a list of people that come to this event, and they're all very well-known. But I get family and friends that I grew up with and family that I don't get to see very often, and it was just a great opportunity for us to really make it public to everybody.

We wanted to let our family know first obviously, so it was great to be able to do that. The prenup thing, you're going to have to ask her (laughter).

Q. Were you using that new chassis, the Pratt & Miller chassis, and if so, how much of a performance enhancer was that for you?

STEVE LETARTE: No, actually we brought our tried and true chassis that we've run for years. I think the Pratt & Miller group that worked for General Motors on the Corvette has a good car here, and I've worked with them a little bit on some setup, not only setup but how you approach a road course. We're still stuck in our ways of racing week in and week out. All the gentlemen at Pratt & Miller really opened our eyes on how you even breathe, how you talk after a road course practice, and I put a lot of that emphasis on Doug Duchardt, the vice president here at the company, really important lining that up. I think that really showed this weekend that we put our road course program on high priority along with everything else, and I'm glad we got out here and showed it.

Q. You were able to reel in Labonte pretty quickly and pass him but then you didn't really pull away from him quickly. Were you in conserve mode at that point and how much pressure did you feel an those late restarts?

JEFF GORDON: Well, he kept telling me he's going to pit. He kept telling me don't worry about Terry, he's going to pit, he's going to pit (laughter). I'll be honest with you, I was conserving as far as fuel, but I wasn't conserving that much through the corners. Terry was really driving a great race and being smooth like he is, and he's a great road racer. I wasn't taking that for granted. That's why there was a few times Steve probably heard in my voice I was probably getting nervous because our car on the long runs really used up the rear tires, and if I had to battle with Terry it was going to be quite a battle because I may have been short?shifting and things like that to try to conserve fuel, but I wasn't doing as much as ?? put it this way: In areas that when I looked out my mirror I was concerned about, I wouldn't say that I was holding back, and he was driving a great race.

I kept asking is he going to pit? I can't believe he made it. He pitted so much earlier than we did, and we were concerned about fuel. At the end for some reason his car wouldn't take off on the restart, and it really gave me a nice breather for the first five or six corners to get the rhythm and get the heat in the tires and go on.

Q. Rick, if you could take a moment to talk about the race today.

RICK HENDRICK: It was a great win. You know, any win in Cup Series is a special win, but these guys who work so hard and have been so close, and it really hurts me to see Jeff have mechanical failure at Richmond, had the rotor in Pocono and got turned in Bristol. You put all those together, and we had had some pretty good runs, but it kind of felt like if we could come here and then go to Daytona, we would have an awful lot of momentum. We're just excited about the races now leading up to the Chase.

Q. Jeff, you mentioned a little while ago about the pressure of going week to week working for a win and not getting it. Could you elaborate a little bit more on what the pressure felt like and how did you cope with it?

JEFF GORDON: Well, one way I cope with it is I try not to read the paper or go to NASCAR.com or any other website that might show, oh, Gordon had trouble again, Gordon doesn't win again, when is it going to happen, how long is he going to go. I've been through it before so I know all those things exist, so I do my best to stay away from it as much as possible. I just really try to put as much effort and energy into ease and communication with the team. We've had some great meetings and talks and just really keeping the glue together there and knowing that we're going to each and every race with our best effort. I'm very confident in that, and I've been patient that it's going to come together for us. Because I've been through it before where we went longer than this into the season, that helped, as well, just knowing that you've just got to be patient and not pay too much attention to outside criticism.

Q. And the follow-up is did you lose any sleep over it? Did it keep you up at night?

JEFF GORDON: I lost some sleep Friday night not qualifying the other day. Any time I make a mistake, I definitely am hard on myself. Luckily I let it go pretty quick. I lose some sleep that one night but let it go pretty quick. It's all about focusing your energy on the next race and the next test. Steve or Rick might have a different answer to that, but I'm pretty good at not losing too much sleep over it.

Q. Jeff, the engagement announcement last night was at a club?

JEFF GORDON: Well, the official announcement was last night. You know, I told my mom and dad last week, I told my sister yesterday, I told Rick Hendrick yesterday, and I told family and friends that were there at the Meadowood resort yesterday, I told them, and I called Steve early this morning, called John Edwards right after that. I told John the same day I told Steve; two things, we're going to win the race so get prepared, and I'm engaged.

Q. You've done so well here. Did you feel like today was that drivable a day? Was the car performing seemingly like it had been in the past here?

JEFF GORDON: The car was good, especially in the braking zones. My goodness, we've made some improvements there. In that scenario we needed to make improvements that the team really focused on. The first run took me ?? we had a horrible start there in turn 2. I don't know what happened but the guys were just all over the place. I lost like four spots. I was trying to run through the first lap in my mind, and in my mind I was thinking about making up three spots, not losing them.

So that was pretty frustrating. It got dicey and I had to be aggressive at times, and we started making some passes and I was feeling good about it. Then all of a sudden me and Stuart and Robby Gordon kind of stayed there, we didn't really go forward anymore. I was nervous at that point. We made some adjustments, and the adjustments just didn't work and the car was getting looser, and then the last adjustment was just dead on. It was a great adjustment and made me better on the right and better on the left, and then I was able to ?? we were definitely the best all day long on that last set.

Q. What made you so confident this morning to proclaim you were going to win? And for you or Steve, a couple strong performances in a row, how does that build momentum? It starts all over again at Daytona next week and the following race, so how does one thing carry over? You hear some guys say there isn't much carryover.

JEFF GORDON: Maybe it's different for everybody, but for us, it's not so much that it definitely carries momentum, it's just you want it to and you feed off of it, and for us to have not ?? I guess we're a solid team, and so when you go to victory lane, I think sometimes it impacts us. As good of an organization and team as we are, sometimes we just need that spark to get the confidence going.

We've been making gains in a lot of areas that maybe I feel like we are given credit for within the organization, but outside people maybe don't always see it.

So when you can add that to the momentum of a good run in Michigan and a win here, and if we can go to Daytona and take some momentum here and we run good at Daytona, so obviously it just builds confidence, and hopefully that builds some momentum, as well.

You know, I'm feeling good. I guess I've been holding onto a secret for a month and it was nice to get that off my chest and let the world know. I was excited about that, and the car has just been so good all weekend long, ever since we tested, really. When we tested VIR, we tried some new things, and man, it was just working so good that I couldn't wait to get out here to begin with.

Friday we were awful and I was so disappointed, and then Saturday, yesterday, the car was just amazing. I had that feeling. I don't know, sometimes you have it, sometimes you don't, sometimes you win races when you don't have that feeling, and sometimes you finish dead last when you do.

That's why I say, even when I've felt that before, I never do that. I don't know why I felt like doing it today, but I did, and I'm glad it worked out.

Q. Steve, you mentioned the car you've used three and a half years. Is this the same car that Jeff won with two and a half years ago here? And Jeff, how hot was it out there today in that car?

STEVE LETARTE: Yes, this was the same car we won it two years ago. We sat on the pole and won in 80 laps or so. It's been a successful car for us. It's won here and at Watkins Glen.

JEFF GORDON: I'd like to know how hot it was because I was hot (laughter). I was fine until they threw that red, and sitting out here ?? typically Steve tells me turn off all your fans, we don't want to run the battery down, but there's no way I was going to sit out there without the blowers and fans on me because it was hot, real hot. I made a comment on the radio, I said, this is the only time I know that it's a bad thing to be leading because I was the last one that they got to with the water. I sat there a long time. I was trying to be patient and knew that it was going to take patience to run those last however many, five or six laps.

I'm in so much better shape physically now than I was a couple years ago when we won this race and I was exhausted. Most of it is through finding better ways to hydrate myself and it gets you through the day. I did get a few cramps today, but other than that, it was good.

Q. Jeff, was there moments in this race when you found you were actually able to relax, maybe just the last lap, or was this pretty tense all the way through?

JEFF GORDON: I would say the last lap was about the only ?? Newman got in second on that last lap and I knew he was pushing really hard. I've got to give him credit. I haven't seen him be a challenger on the road courses in recent years, and that was an impressive run for him. So I think a lot of us are going to be taking a look at him going forward.

You know, I guess the last few corners and that last lap, I just kept telling myself don't miss a shift, don't wheel out, just don't do anything dumb. Sometimes you can over?think it, but everything went smooth.

Q. It was a long, tough afternoon. A couple of red flag periods, almost 25 minutes, about 50 minutes of yellow flag. Did you think it was ever going to end? Is it the toughest win you've had here at Infineon?

JEFF GORDON: Well, because I'm better hydrated these days and I think the team does a better job of keeping me cool inside the car with some hoses and blowers, you know, it wasn't the most physically demanding race on me personally that I've had in the past.

There were some challenging moments out there where I was concerned about the handling of the car being good enough to win. There were some challenges from some other competitors out there with Newman trying to take the lead. There's never any guarantees, so until I saw that checkered flag wave, I wasn't giving it up or relaxing at all.

Q. Will Steve keep you advised where your chief competitors normally are on a road course, Robby Gordon and Tony and Kurt Busch and the rest? There's quite a few good road course racers here this weekend.

JEFF GORDON: No doubt. I battled for a long time, passing and passing back, and I was so happy to get by him, and then he battled back and got back by me and I was pretty disappointed.

Right from the start with Stuart and Robby getting by me, those were the two guys that I was ?? all I could think of is ?? one thing I've got to do is keep those two behind me, and they got by me in the first corner. That was not too good. I thought the No. 2 car was going to be the guy to beat besides that. There were a lot of guys that were tough. I mean, we brought our best package and it was good, and I took advantage of having a great car in the right places.

I'll tell you, we were sitting there at 6 and I had just come on the radio and said, man, I'm loose here, I'm tight here, I don't know, I don't know, and we threw the caution and we sat under caution ?? we went back green, and I was getting one a lap. I wasn't expecting and these guys weren't expecting it, and I was just like, wow, maybe we're better than I thought we were.

Q. A lot of the people who are competitors of yours today sort of self?destructed. A lot of people made mistakes. Do you think winning on a road course, the precision and keeping your cool and making sure you don't make mistakes is more important than on another type of track?

JEFF GORDON: I don't think it's more important. It's important everywhere you go, but I think there are more opportunities to make mistakes here than there is on an oval. You have so much more going on from shifting to braking, turning left and right, curves, dirt, a totally unique Pit Road. It's really easy to stall in the pits. You're in first gear, Pit Road speed, so it's kind of a unique situation.

I can go on and on with all those things. Even though at times we weren't just driving to the front, I just kept telling myself, hey, we've got to come out here, solid finish, solid finish, keep it on the track, be smooth, don't make mistakes, and Steve was reminding me of that quite a bit.

We talked about that before the race, as well. We knew we had a car capable of winning, but it's as important or more important that we come out here with a top five finish or a solid finish and make some points up and capitalize on a track that we run good at.

Q. A two-parter. First of all, Jeff, today's race according to the broadcast was the 100th in the Cup Series history. How convenient was it that this win for you, not only was it the 100th in the series, but your 74th career, your 5th win here, your 9th overall, and the fact that this is essentially your home track?

The second question is for you, Mr. Hendrick. Overall how significant was it for you to have Jeff win today?

RICK HENDRICK: It was really special. I guess July five years ago Ricky won Kansas in the Track and then it went to the cars. We came out here to try and run this race, 17 was the number. So we decided we'd make the car look like Ricky's and all the crew that worked on his car was there. So it was a real special deal, real emotional deal, and I think we had fans up there that started chanting, "We love Ricky," and it was a pretty emotional deal for all of us.

And then to come back and have Jeff won here after we felt like we let him down the last two races ?? I don't know if it was the last two, we had the leakage problem and then a gear break and leading the race both times. So it was a sweet weekend for us. That will be ?? it's a bittersweet deal to see that car, but it was neat to have all the pit crew and all the guys that started with him there yesterday.

JEFF GORDON: For me it's not about the stats. One day I'll look forward to looking back at those stats, but when you're here right now it's about feeling that energy that comes. There's no greater feeling in the world than going to victory lane and all the hard work and effort that's put into it, especially when you haven't been there in a while. You appreciate it all that much more.

Ever since I was five and a half years old, I think maybe six years old is when I had my very first win. That's all I've ever raced for is to get that trophy, get to victory lane. He pays me a lot of money to do it, so he might say yeah, yeah, whatever. But I think everybody knows what drives me and this race team is to do that right there, to experience that. There's not enough money in the world that you can give to buy that feeling and to buy that opportunity. We just feel very fortunate to have gotten there today.

TERRY LABONTE, NO. 96 DLP HDTV MONTE CARLO SS and ROGER STAUBACH, OWNER, HALL OF FAME RACING - Finished 3rd:
Also includes comments from Phillipe Lopez

Q. Certainly a great run out there today, and Roger and Troy (Aikman) are looking really smart for their race strategy and for putting you in the car. Talk about that great run today.

TERRY LABONTE: Well, it was an awful good run. These guys did a great job. We had a really good car in practice yesterday, and we got here and we weren't as good as we needed to be and really (crew chief) Phillipe (Lopez) and everybody worked their part on the car and had a really good setup yesterday morning and I went out and ran practice. I think they knew when I ran ten laps in a row that that was pretty good because I usually don't run that long in practice. So we had a really good practice yesterday.

The hardest part was we were starting back so far and then the strategy. We got really good gas mileage, and then during the race today, the car was a little bit too loose under throttle, so I really couldn't use the throttle like I needed to, and I think that helped the gas mileage. We were able to stretch the mileage a little bit more. We knew exactly when we needed to pit. We used a couple of caution laps and we kind of gambled and it paid off.

We should have been second, but I didn't get my tires good and clean after that red flag. I was trying to save gas and I didn't want to try to scuff the tires up too much there, and I was hoping I had them cleaned off enough, and we took off there and they weren't good enough. It took me a couple laps to get going and the No.12 (Ryan Newman) car got me. It was still a good run for us.

Q. Roger, your thoughts?

ROGER STAUBACH: We were up there with our sponsor DLP, and I've never experienced such excitement. We've got such a class human being that's running up front. It was such an amazing race. Phillipe is not here, but between Phillipe and what Terry did and the team, earlier we talked about this today, and we wouldn't have dreamed we could do this this quickly, but we have just a great driver and a great person. He had the right equipment today, and Phillipe was our coach. He did a great job.

I don't know why I'm here. I don't deserve to be here, but I'll tell you, I'm involved with this team and we've committed to it, and it's been a lot of fun today. I'm really proud of you, Terry. Thanks a lot.

TERRY LABONTE: Thanks a lot, Roger. I've never told anybody this except for a few friends. When I was a kid growing up Roger Staubach was always my hero. I finally got to meet him with this deal, and we did a couple of appearances together, and he is everything I imagined, and that's really neat because a lot of times people that you look up to aren't really what you think they are. This guy is a class act right here, and it's just been a real thrill for me to be a part of your team, and I really do appreciate that.

Q. Terry, the last time you ran this well was when you won at Darlington the last race in 2003. You're not a very emotional guy, but with this being your last year, was there some emotion in the racecar today, and can you talk about what your feelings were as the laps ran down?

TERRY LABONTE: No, we'll have some more good runs before the year is over. Not really. I was running there with Jeff there for a long time, and we were running about the same speed there. He ran me down and passed me and then I hung with him there, but then he just slowed down trying to save gas a little bit, also. We were pretty close there and then he was able to stretch it out there at the end pretty good.

It was just a good run for us. Hey, this is my last year going into the deal, and I'm fine with that. I've been doing this for a long time and it's been a lot of fun and I've been able to win some races and some championships, so there just comes a time when it's time to retire, and I'm going to be 50 years old in November, so I think it's probably about time to retire from this deal. When you go to the drivers' meeting and there's people sitting around that are younger than your kids, it kind of tells you something. I was just glad we had a good run today.

Q. Terry, as you were trying to save fuel and trying to keep up with the cautions and how that was impacting everything, did you ever think you might have a shot at (race winner) Jeff Gordon?

TERRY LABONTE: I knew he was close on fuel, too, so it was going to be my only shot was if he had a ?? if his car missed a little bit on fuel or something or if he got off course or something, and I've only seen Jeff Gordon get off course by himself one time, and that was during qualifying this week, so that doesn't happen very often. It was going to take a slip from his part probably for us to get him.

Q. Roger, this morning you were saying that you were going to be really celebrating if you guys were 24th or so (laughter), and here you are up on the podium. What sort of celebration plans do you guys have and what do you do next?

ROGER STAUBACH: We're going to celebrate. We have a lot of our team with TI and DLP, and Troy had to leave early. He really got engaged out here with Rhonda, his wife, so they went off, and we've been emailing each other back and forth when we were leading there at the end. So I said, hey, Troy, I'm going to pull us through here, which is kind of crazy because Terry pulled us through and Phillipe, but it's been neat.

The whole DLP team and TI, we are going to celebrate. It's really fun. This is a tough sport, it's a great sport, and it's fun to be part of a legend like Terry and to have a good day out here in Sonoma, and it's amazing that we really have hit a dream this year. We got over our heads in a way, but we also put together a great team, and to finish and be competitive, it's been fun this year. We were 16th, 17th, and Terry got us started those first five races, he gave us the qualification. But to come in third today, I feel like we've won the Super Bowl. Well, almost won the Super Bowl (laughter).

Q. For both of you, the last red flag, what was running through your mind in the car? And Roger, in the suite what was running through your mind?

ROGER STAUBACH: What was running through my mind, we're in the box up there. People are going crazy. We were No. 1 and then Terry was fighting the gas deal, and I'm thinking, oh, my Lord, it's like the Dallas Mavericks, I felt like we were Mark Cuban on the Letterman Show. We were 2?0 and we thought we were going to win.

We just wanted to make sure that Terry finished and it worked out, and obviously it was a tight deal at the end. You get a little greedy, when I walked by out there and saw all those people celebrating, but we just had a magnificent run today. We're not greedy, but it's fun to be a champion, and to be in the top three has just been something very special to us. And again, I can't say enough about Terry's commitment to our team and what the day has meant for the future and the momentum that we have as Hall of Fame Racing.

TERRY LABONTE: I didn't like sitting there. I was hoping we were going to run another lap or two another caution because I knew that would help us on the fuel deal. I hated to see them red flag it. I was thinking, oh, my Lord, I'm going to run out of gas.

Q. Terry, we heard that you had run 56 of the 100 road courses; is that correct?

TERRY LABONTE: Well, I don't know. You know, I don't know. I've run since ?? every road course race, I guess, since 1979, going back to Riverside. We won a couple at Riverside, and it's been 20 years ago, I guess, or so. Yeah, there's been a lot of them.

Just a couple notes on that, won at Riverside in 1984 and 85, and your best finishes here were a second and two thirds at Infineon.

Q. Given that this was the 100th road race in NEXTEL Cup history and you've been participating in over half of them, how significant was it for you to be in such close contention for the win so late in the thing today for you, being such a veteran of these races?

TERRY LABONTE: Well, of course it felt good. We had a good car yesterday at practice, like I said a while ago, and then we had great pit strategy today and were able to get up there and lead the race some and wind up with a good finish. I didn't realize it was the 100th road course. I've always enjoyed running the road courses, and over the years we've done pretty well on them. I always look forward to coming here and going to Watkins Glen.

PHILIPPE LOPEZ (Crew chief, No. 96 DLP HDTV Chevy)

How close were you at the end?

Well, by the time we got to the end, we weren't. When we made the call on Lap 60, we were a half a lap short. We knew that, and we pretty much asked Terry right from the beginning to save gas. We had an 18 second lead on Gordon, but it was more important to save gas than it was to try and hold off Gordon. He was just flying. As we got the cautions, I felt better. But I didn't feel completely better until I saw him come around (Turn) 11 on the last lap.

Were you nervous after making the call on Lap 60?

No, because the originally the call was to just get the tires then and that would enable us to come down pit road under green and while everyone had to take four (tires), we were just going to splash and go. That was going to save us 12 seconds on the racetrack. So, coming in on Lap 60, that was a no-brainer, I'm surprised more people didn't do it. But, then it turned into another decision five laps later and that was not to come in and see what we could come up with.

How nervous were you that last 15 laps?

There is always the fear of the unknown. We're dealing with computers and they're telling me gas mileage and all this is based on something you don't know. And that's what the driver is doing with the gas pedal. You don't know how hard he is pushing it, you don't know how much he's saving, you don't know any of that. So, I felt good about what we were doing, but I still didn't know until I saw him come around Turn 11."

Talk about Terry's drive today:

He did an awesome job and that's why he's a two-time champion and won two road course races. He knew we were stuck at 25th and that's why I think he wholeheartedly agreed with what we were going to do. It got us track position and he showed he could run right there."

What does this mean for the team?

Well, the big thing is, every week we've been getting better. Michigan is a classic example. We thought we were top 10, but blew a left rear and finished 38th. We knew we could run top 10, but I'm not being delusional, we can't do that every week. We're not there yet. But, we knew we could do it on a given occasion. Now we've done it. It's one thing to think you can do it, it's another thing to do it."

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE'S MONTE CARLO SS - Finished 10th:

"Yeah I was just trying to mind my own business. I had the speed to run in the top five. There was a big group of us that kind of ran the same lap times and then the No. 60 (Boris Said) came in there and turned me around. It's unfortunate. I enjoy racing those guys coming out. I've known Boris for a long time but you get in those situations and those guys are so greedy and don't have anything to lose and put people racing for points in a bad position. Fortunately I didn't get hit. I was able to spin around and get back going. It's just unfortunate for us."

On the frustration: "Yeah, I made some mistakes on restarts where I'd give up one or two spots because I was so worried about racing the guys in front of me and playing offense, that I[d put myself in a bad position in the braking zones and then the No. 99 or the No. 31 got by me and I thought darn, here I worked my way all the way up there and I've got the speed to outrun these guys and I made some bad choices. So, I'm looking forward to Daytona. We've got a great car we're taking there."

CHAD KNAUS, CREW CHIEF:

"We ran in the top five most of the day and then we got spun out and that hurt us. The car was okay but it wasn't good enough to pass when we needed to. And the lap times were pretty inconsistent. But we got a top 10 and that's pretty good. That's what we needed to do."

JEFF BURTON, NO. 31 CINGULAR WIRELESS MONTE CARLO SS - Finished 7th:

"It was a good day for us. I'm just real glad to get through it without any incidents. We ran well. I got off track one time leaving the pits. That hurt us a little bit but nonetheless we fought back and got all but one of those spots back. I'm real proud of my guys. We got good fuel mileage; good brakes and everything was good."

Are you relieved to get out of here?
"Oh, yeah. I came in here wanting a top 10 just because my track record here is terrible. We run decent but we finish bad. But we were able to get a finish today so I'm proud of that."

BRIAN VICKERS, DRIVER OF THE NO. 25 GMAC CHEVROLET: Finished 14TH

"Our GMAC Chevy ran well today. Starting 42nd, we knew if we could avoid the first lap mess that has caught me the past two years-- we'd have a good day. We just tried to be patient, picking them off one at a time. I think if we would have had just a few more green flag laps at the end, we could have gained a few more sports, but to start 42nd and finish 14th is still a good day."

TONY STEWART, NO. 20 HOME DEPOT MONTE CARLO SS - Finished 28th
GREG ZIPADELLI, CREW CHIEF

GREG ZIPADELLI:

Was there any warning that the engine was getting ready to let go?
"A few laps before it let go it started slowing down. We didn't really know what happened. Knock on wood, we don't have very many motor problems. Mark Cronquist and everybody at Joe Gibbs Racing really do a good job there. That's really been one of our strong suits in the past. It's our second one this year. We'll just go back and look at it and see why and what broke to see if we can fix it for the second half of the season, if there is a problem. It might've just been a part that was bad and it was our day."

How tough was it keeping Tony focused when the engine started to go and he started falling back?
"He did a good job of staying out of everybody's way. We were just trying to stay on the lead lap there and be as easy on it as we could to try and salvage something. In all honesty, we probably would've been a whole lot better if we didn't have all those cautions because we had ourselves a pretty big cushion built up on a lot of those guys. But that's just the way it is."

The pit road speeding penalty wasn't that big of a setback, was it?
"Oh really? You come in second and you're back out 14th and you give up all of that under green. We were with the '24' and those guys and we had to race a lot harder to get ourselves back up there. We still did it. Tony did a great job. We had a pretty decent car today. We were best on the long runs and I think we picked up a lot of speed up in the last 15 laps or so of a run. When everybody else was falling off, we could really maintain. So I really felt like we would be good at the end. For sure, we were probably a second-place car, but we might've had a shot at him (Jeff Gordon) with all those restarts. You don't know."

How tough was it keeping him focused when he was battling Boris Said?
"It's just road course racing, short track racing. If they're not intense about it and getting upset about it then those are the guys you really don't want driving your car. That's what makes Tony who he is. He's fiery. He lost it for a minute but he did a really good job of getting it right back and getting back in his rhythm and passing all those cars to get back up toward the front."

It's been awhile since you've been to victory lane. Is it getting a little frustrating?
"I think it's frustrating that we haven't finished better than we have. We've had really good race cars. From Charlotte to Michigan to the All-Star race, we've never wrecked this many race cars or had this much adversity. But it's one of those deals you look back at the year after you win a championship and it seems like you get all the stupid things that happen to you that didn't happen to you the year before. You know, we're still in it. Right now, it's survival mode, trying to stay in the top-10 and hopefully we'll get rid of all this stuff and have a shot at it at the end of the year."

Is there a tendency to punish the car when you're trying to come through the field like that?
"You may punish your tires or your brakes, but as long as you don't miss a shift, you don't really hurt the motor. With the gearing that they have and the gear rules they have, we never even hit the chip this year. And in the past when we've been here we've just been banging it off the chip. If anything, I'd say what we had and the way we raced, we probably were easier on it than we had been. We had the mechanical fan on and it never got hot. So you know, it's just one of those things. I'm sure it was just a part that broke."

Are you feeling good about going back to Daytona?
"I was feeling good about coming here because we won but we're leaving here 28th. So, there are no guarantees. The only thing it means is that we can win there again. We've won a Duel, a couple Shootouts and we won the 400, so I think our speedway program is strong enough to put us in victory lane if we can go and do our job and stay out of trouble and have no more bad luck."

TONY STEWART:

Do you have any idea what happened to the engine?
"We know a lifter was broken, but we don't know exactly how it happened. We just know it lost a cylinder."

It seemed to be a pretty rough race. A lot of people were banging into you.
"Normally, we're up front and we don't have that problem on a road course. But you look at some of the good cars that were beat up - I got a chance to see all of them as they were passing me at the end - and it seemed like it was an awful rough day to me. The ones that I was a little disappointed in were some of the ones I have the most respect for on a road course. You got some guys who should be the best quality guys out here and they're the ones blocking and chopping people's noses off and this and that. It's disappointing we've got to have a race like that.

Boris Said claimed that you're still his favorite driver ever, but he wasn't going to give you anything.
"I'm not asking him to give me anything. But if a guy gets a run, don't drive him across the race track. Yeah, this is a road course race, but it's also a NASCAR race. This isn't European road racing where you block and run guys all over the race track. We're not going to do that. They're not going to do that to me. I don't care if they do it to the rest of the field, but the one thing I think we established today was that they're not going to race me that way. When Boris got a run on me, I didn't change my line or anything. He got under me and got the spot. But both times I got underneath him it was squeeze, squeeze and run me across the race track and tear up the nose of my race car and it ends up hurting the way the car drives all day."

Greg (Zipadelli, crew chief) says that you're having all the bad luck you didn't have last year.
"Seems that way. For sure, it's been a rough road this month-and-a-half. The good thing is that I'm hoping we get it out of our system now. We get it out of the way now and we get back on that run like we're used to. Today was just a freak deal. There's nothing you can say but bad luck to that. We were running well even with a beat up race car. We were almost matching Jeff (Gordon) lap for lap and I'm sure he was taking it easy and I was taking it easy a little bit. Jeff was the class of the field today and it was exactly what I said it was going to be. It was going to be between him and me. But as good as he was today, you weren't going to catch him with a beat up race car. You just aren't going to do it. He was just too good today. Getting into those altercations with those guys who were blocking all day hurts you. And that all was a result of me speeding on pit lane. I think we figured out what happened. I think I was in second gear versus first gear and the gears are so close together that it was five mph difference. It was a mistake on my part being in second gear, because I knew I was below what my tach reading was supposed to be. But still being in second gear was too fast, obviously. It was just a mistake on my part. Everywhere else we go we're always in second gear on pit lane. Coming in on that first stop I just didn't get down to first gear, I guess. The second time I came through I was down to first gear and they said the speed was fine. That's about the only thing I can attribute it to."

You usually don't get caught speeding.
"Hardly ever. That's probably the first or second time I've been caught speeding. Normally, I'm pretty good about it. Normally, I'm the one griping because guys are pushing the envelope and I'm getting passed running what I know is supposed to be the speed limit. It was just a mistake on my part today and I got us behind and got us in the scenarios we were in. But with the motor deal, I never missed a shift and never wheel-hopped the thing all day. From a driving standpoint, other than the altercations on the track, I was having a perfect day.

I've never had a race where I haven't wheel-hopped or missed a shift or something and had trouble shifting at some point during the race."

How was it inside the car with the engine smoking?
"I'm sure if you look at the chemical makeup of smoke that it's not probably not healthy for you. I've got to believe it's as bad as a tobacco leaf. We couldn't shut it off (during the red flag) for fear that it wouldn't start back up. We were sitting there idling the whole time, and the way the exhaust was on the right hand side and where the inlet for the helmet blower was, it was pumping it out and sucking it in and I was breathing it. It wasn't a very good situation. I can feel the veins in my head because that's how bad the headache is. I felt bad for Michael Waltrip because he was sitting in front of me and its blowing right over the top of his car. Poor Elliott Sadler on the caution before that was behind me and dropping way back trying to get away from it."

Driveshaft Problems End Blaney's Run at Sonoma

Dave Blaney
Dave Blaney
SONOMA, Calif. (June 25, 2006) – After a successful test at Virginia International Raceway several weeks ago, Dave Blaney and the Caterpillar Racing team had high hopes for their weekend of road-course racing in Northern California. After qualifying in the 36th spot for the event at Infineon Raceway, Blaney was closing on a top-15 finish when problems with the driveshaft cut the team’s race short.

Blaney was the seventh of 48 competitors to make his qualifying attempt Friday afternoon. Blaney posted a speed of 90.825 mph around the 1.99-mile course and was set to start the race in the 36th spot.

The green flag waved for the start of the 110-lap event, and Blaney narrowly avoided disaster during a first lap, multi-car accident. Several other cars were not as fortunate, as extensive damage resulted in the cars being taken to the garage without completing a single lap. The carnage included the machine driven by Tom Hubert, who normally changes rear tires for the No. 22 team. In order to clean up the debris from the incident, NASCAR officials stopped the race on lap two. When the race resumed, Blaney stood in 27th place.

On lap 10, Blaney reported to crew chief Kevin Hamlin that the Cat car handled tight heading into the corners and loose off, and that he lost all the momentum he built up coming down the hills because he couldn’t turn the car. Hamlin planned to make air pressure adjustments and pull out the front fenders during the first pit stop of the day, which occurred on lap 32 while Blaney was running in the 29th spot. After quick work by the crew, Blaney returned to the track in 32nd place.

Blaney notified the crew that the changes to the car helped shortly after the pit stop, but the car had once again become free off the corners by the time the next caution flag waved. Hamlin planned to make additional air pressure adjustments during the next scheduled stop.

On lap 62, Blaney was trying to avoid a spinning car, but he made contact with another car, which resulted in damage to the front fenders of the No. 22. Blaney pitted several laps later, and the team repaired some of the minor front end damage by tugging on the fenders. The stop also included Hamlin’s suggested air pressure adjustments, and Blaney soon reported that the car drove much better.

Things were looking up for the team, and with his much-improved handling machine, Blaney was set to make his way through the field. Unfortunately, his march to the front was over before it really started. As he drove out of turn 11 and got back on the throttle, something went terribly wrong with the car. Blaney said that it seemed to be a drive shaft or transmission problem, and he took the car to the garage so the crew could assess the damage. After doing its best to diagnose the problem, the crew determined that the car would not rejoin the race. When the checkered flag waved, Blaney was credited with a 39th-place finish.

The mechanical problems not only dropped Blaney to 33rd in the owners’ point standings, but also ended Blaney’s streak of 32 consecutive races in which he was running at the end, which was the longest of any NASCAR NEXTEL Cup driver currently in competition.

The NEXTEL Cup Series goes heads back to Daytona International Speedway next weekend for the Pepsi 400 Saturday, July 1. Qualifying for the event is scheduled for Friday, June 30. Coverage of Saturday evening’s race under the lights at the 2.5-mile superspeedway, scheduled for a 7:55 p.m. EDT start, will broadcast on FOX (television), MRN (radio) and XM Satellite Radio.

Sour Engine Spoils Stewart's Strong Run in Sonoma

Dropped Cylinder Drops Home Depot Driver from Top-Three to 28th

Tony Stewart
Tony Stewart
June 25, 2006 - For Tony Stewart and the No. 20 Home Depot Racing Team, Sunday's Dodge/SaveMart 350k NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., was a typical road course outing with an atypical finish.

Winners of three straight road course races, including last year's jaunt at Infineon, Stewart and Co. were again at the front and in contention for the win. But engine woes less than 20 laps short of the 110-lap distance dropped Stewart out of the top-three and to a distant 28th place finish when the checkered flag waved.

"We know we broke a lifter, but we don't know exactly how it happened," said Stewart. "We just know it lost a cylinder."

"A few laps before it let go it started slowing down," added crew chief Greg Zipadelli. "We don't have very many motor problems. Mark Cronquist (head engine builder) and everybody at Joe Gibbs Racing really do a good job there. That's really been one of our strong suits. But it's our second one this year. We'll just go back and look at it to see why it broke and fix it for the second half of the season. It might've just been a part that was bad and it was our day."

Prior to the engine problems, it appeared that it was the No. 20 team's day to win, or at least log another strong road course finish.

Stewart started 12th but used the twists and turns of Infineon's 1.99-mile layout to his advantage, cracking the top-five with a decisive pass of road course ace Boris Said on lap seven.

Even with a Home Depot Chevrolet that had trouble gripping the pavement while accelerating off the corners, Stewart used patience and throttle control to take the lead on lap 30 just before making his first pit stop on lap 31.

It was there where Stewart had his first taste of disappointment.

NASCAR cited the two-time and reigning series champion with a pit road speeding infraction. Too fast on entry was the call from the tower, with Stewart forced to serve a drive-through penalty on the following lap. From the lead to 12th Stewart went.

"I think I was in second gear versus first gear," said Stewart, who logged his pit road speed on the pace lap while in first gear. "The gears are so close together that it was a five mph difference. It was a mistake on my part being in second gear, because I knew I was below what my tach reading was supposed to be. But being in second gear was too fast, obviously. Everywhere else we go we're always in second gear on pit lane. Coming in on that first stop I just didn't get down to first gear, I guess. The second time I came through I was down to first gear and they said the speed was fine."

Undeterred, Stewart methodically picked his way back toward the front. He was running third behind leader Terry Labonte and eventual race winner Jeff Gordon when the engine soured.

"Today was just a freak deal," said Stewart. "There's nothing you can say but bad luck to that. We were running well even with a beat up race car. We were almost matching Jeff (Gordon) lap for lap. Jeff was the class of the field today and it was exactly what I said it was going to be. It was going to be between him and me. But as good as he was today, you weren't going to catch him with a beat up race car."

Stewart's Home Depot Chevrolet looked worse for wear even before it was befallen by engine trouble.

"Normally, we're up front and we don't have that problem on a road course," said Stewart. "But you look at some of the good cars that were beat up - I got a chance to see all of them as they were passing me at the end - and it seemed like it was an awful rough day to me. The ones that I was a little disappointed in were some of the ones I have the most respect for on a road course. You got some guys who should be the best quality guys out here and they're the ones blocking and chopping people's noses off and this and that. It's disappointing we've got to have a race like that."

While the race and the result were disappointing, the consequences weren't all that bad.

Stewart dropped just one spot in the championship point standings to seventh, 422 markers arrears series leader Jimmie Johnson.

Stewart's Joe Gibbs Racing teammates - Denny Hamlin and J. J. Yeley - finished 12th and 33rd, respectively. Hamlin and Yeley occupy the 11th and 27th positions, respectively. Hamlin dropped two spots while Yeley maintained his position.

Gordon's win was the 74th of his career and his first this season. Ryan Newman finished second, while Labonte, Greg Biffle and Kurt Busch secured the rest of the top-five. Carl Edwards, Jeff Burton, Elliott Sadler, Boris Said and Johnson comprised the rest of the top-10.

The next event on the Nextel Cup schedule is the July 1 Pepsi 400 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway. The race begins at 7:55 p.m. EDT with live coverage provided by FOX.

Space Shuttle, F-16s and Fireworks to Fill DIS Sky

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., (June 26, 2006) -- Race fans attending the 48th annual Pepsi 400 NEXTEL Cup Series event on Saturday, July 1 will receive a 2-for-1 special on fly-overs before the start of one of NASCAR's most exciting nighttime races.

Earlier in the day, NASA is scheduled to launch the space shuttle Discovery from the Kennedy Space Center in nearby Cape Canaveral, the first space shuttle launch in almost a year and the first ever on the same day of the Pepsi 400.

The launch is scheduled to take place at 3:48 p.m. and the "World Center of Racing" will be an excellent viewing spot.

The second fly-over at Daytona International Speedway will take place during the national anthem later that night and provided by four Air Force F-16s from the Ft. Smith, Ark.

"We think it's a real treat to have a space shuttle launch on the same day as we host the Pepsi 400 on Independence Day holiday weekend," Speedway President Robin Braig said.

Capping off the All-American night will be another high-flying spectacle as Santore & Sons Fireworks, located in nearby Bunnell, Fla., will once again display one of the largest fireworks shows in the Southeast.

Since the first nighttime running of the Pepsi 400 back in 1998, Santore & Sons has provided the post-race fireworks displays at “The World Center of Racing.”

“There is no other show in the southeastern United States that has so many shells in one location throughout the July 4th holiday,” said Santore & Sons Vice President Anthony Santore.

Tickets for the June 29-July 1 Pepsi 400 Weekend are available online at http://www.racetickets.com or by calling 1-800-PITSHOP.

  • Hamlin UNOFFICIALLY 11th in the NEXTEL Cup Series championship standings, nine points behind 10th-place Kevin Harvick. He holds an 11-point advantage over 12th-place Kyle Busch.
  • WIX Filters is an associate sponsor for Joe Gibbs Racing. Raybestos and WIX Filters are corporate siblings in the Affinia Group.
  • TWO Raybestos Rookies rank among the top-20 in the NEXTEL Cup Series championship standings: Hamlin and Bowyer (18th).

HAMLIN: “The 40 car dove into turn 1 and power-drived like three or four guys. I was right behind him so I had to check-up and ended up slamming into the back of somebody that he turned sideways. I thought it knocked the radiator out as hard as we hit. That’s just a testament to this FedEx crew. They did a great job never giving up. This is another good top-12 finish.” THIS FINISH KEEPS YOU CLOSE TO THE TOP-10 IN NEXTEL CUP POINTS. “We’ve got some guys, Gordon and them, that were behind us that won the race. We probably fell out of the top-10 but we closed the gap on some guys in front of us and that was pretty important. It was a great run for us. I said if we could come away with a top-15 it would be like a win for us and that’s what we did.” HOW MUCH DID YOU LEARN TODAY THAT WILL HELP YOU AT WATKINS GLEN? “I learned quite a bit. It seemed like the longer the race went on, the faster we got. That was a big help for us. I’m sure with more experience we’ll just keep getting better.” HOW PHYSICAL IS ROAD RACING? “It really is, both on the car and the driver. This weekend I’ve never been so exhausted, running back and forth and doing a lot of stuff, sponsor wise. I’m ready to take break [smiles].” WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR TOMORROW? “I’ve got another appearance in Vegas [smiles]. After Monday I’ve got clear sailing for a few weeks.” HOW BIG IS THIS RUN FOR YOUR TEAM? “It is great for us. It’s a testament and shows how strong our team is. No matter how bad we were in practice we still came away with a great finish.”

MARTIN TRUEX JR., No.1 BASS PRO SHOPS/TRACKER BOATS CHEVROLET: “The car was good. We were in really good shape there. I got stuck behind Mark for a while and couldn’t get by him. On those restarts, when everybody would get jammed up, I was trying to be nice to the guys in front of me and everybody was dive-bombing on the inside. Denny and Vickers got by me and I had Vickers going into 11 on the last lap and he drove me into the tire pile. I’m giving a lot of respect but it doesn’t seem like I’m getting any so things are going to change.”

CLINT BOWYER, No. 07 JACK DANIEL’S CHEVROLET: THIS WAS A GOOD FINISH FOR YOU. “Yeah it was. Coming from that far back, it was a heck of a job from the guys fixing the car like that. It was a good rally back. I got behind there and that kind of stuff happens. Everybody was racing really hard on the first lap for some reason and just got caught up in it. I got woaed up and got ran into from behind. I don’t think it was anybody’s fault, it just happened.” EARLY IN THE RACE YOU RESTARTED LAST. “We did good. Like I say, Gil Martin [crew chief] had good pit strategy and got the Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet back up front. We had a good car, you just have to have track position.” ARE YOU AS TIRED AS YOU THOUGHT YOU WOULD BE AFTER THIS WEEKEND? “Actually, I’m more tired. I’ve got to work on my helmet a little bit. The air conditioner was screwing up on me. It was getting a little steamy in there. It was a lot of fun out there and I learned a lot. I’ll put it forth to good use next year.” HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO HAVE A GOOD RUN HERE? “It’s very important. Stuff can happen so easy and to get out of here unscathed with a decent finish is a good momentum builder. We’ve just been struggling here lately and we’re determined to get it back on top.” HOW MUCH DID YOU LEARN THAT WILL HELP YOU AT WATKINS GLEN? “A bunch, but I tell you, they are two different racetracks, for sure. We’re going to have to pretty much rebuild that thing but we got all out of it [smiles].”

J.J. YELEY, No. 18 INTERSTATE BATTERIES CHEVROLET: WHAT HAPPENED? “Restarts here are pretty treacherous. Everybody got bunched up there and then a couple guys got by me. The 8 car got underneath me and couldn’t clear me off of 11 going up the front straightaway. Instead of waiting until four or five to pass me, he just ran into the back of me and knocked me off the road.” YOU HAD A CLEAN CAR ALL DAY LONG. “It’s disappointing. We stayed out for track position. The car was pretty good. It just gets those deals where everyone starts racing real hard there at the end. I guess it’s one thing to get passed and another thing to get knocked out of the road. The car was in good shape. The rest of these cars look like they’ve been to a short track. It’s just real upsetting. I know that anytime I’ve been around the 8 car if he can’t pass â€em he knocks them out of the road. I guess he’s just glad that he’s a hero.”

  • Gordon led the most laps of any driver in the race, the third time he’s accomplished the feat this season. He has now led at least one lap in 10 of the 16 NEXTEL Cup races this season. Gordon has now led 29 times for 268 total laps in 2006.
  • Gordon won the Dodge/Save Mart 350, his first win in 2006. He won for the fifth time in 14 races at Infineon Raceway. Gordon scored his seventh top-10 finish in 16 races this season and is eighth in the NEXTEL Cup Series championship standings.
  • Greg Biffle continues to lead the season-long WIX Filters Lap Leader standings.
  • Gordon quotes: “I knew this team was something special. We just haven’t had a chance to really show it. They gave me such an awesome racecar this weekend that I had to get them this win. If we didn’t win with this car, we can’t ever win. What a great day, you know. Just kept working on it. We weren’t the best all day but we got that track position. It was great. It was awesome. Man, I didn’t know if we were ever going to win another one of these races. I’m speechless. What an amazing moment this is, a very special weekend for me and this race team to get back to victory lane.”

    Dodge/Save Mart 350 - Ford Post-Race Quotes

KEN SCHRADER – No. 21 Little Debbie Ford Fusion (Finished 41st) – HOW HARD OF A HIT WAS THAT? “It was pretty hard. I felt it.” CAN YOU DESCRIBE MORE OF WHAT HAPPENED? “I was facing the wrong direction coming back across the track. I looked up and saw all kinds of cars and said, â€There ain’t no way they all are gonna miss us,’ and they didn’t.” CAN YOU COMPARE THAT HIT TO ANYTHING? “It was right up there. It was a good one.” CAN YOU DESCRIBE WHAT HAPPENED? “I was just going the wrong direction on the race track in front of them and I knew it wasn’t gonna be pretty and it wasn’t.” DID YOU GET TURNED? “I’m not saying I did because I don’t know if I did or not, and it wouldn’t be like the first time I was spun out either. It’s racing.”

DALE JARRETT – No. 88 UPS Ford Fusion (Finished 34th) – “We got to the top of the hill and I guess somebody spun the 18 and he was sitting there. I got in the back of the 41 and when I did that he got up so far that it hung the throttle of mine wide open, and I drove on up there and hit the 18. It’s just one of those things because everybody is going hard at the end of the race.” IT WAS A ROUGH DAY ANYWAY. “Yeah, it was a bad day. I thought at the first of the race we were gonna be reasonable, but we just never could make the car get off the corner like I needed to. When we tried to do that, we killed the center of the corner, so we were kind of chasing our tail there.”

GREG BIFFLE – No. 16 National Guard Ford Fusion (Finished 4th) – “You always want a little bit more and I felt I could run second there, but with all those cautions it just took my chance away. We had a really fast car and I’m just excited the gear box and engine and everything ran so well. The car was just flawless the whole day. The brakes were good, but we just came up a little bit short.” DO YOU WEIGH THE RISK VS. REWARD WITH FOUR TO GO? “Yeah, I was inside the 12 and we banged fenders a little bit. He ran me into the grass a little, and the same with the 96, but they’re saving their position and with four to go or three to go it’s every man for himself. I had to block Kurt a couple times, but that’s the way it is.” WAS THIS RACE A CONCERN AS FAR AS MAINTAINING AT LEAST 10TH IN THE POINTS? “Yeah, it’s so easy to break a transmission, a rear end gear or have your brakes fail or something else like that. Everybody stays on the lead lap here and you’ve got thirtysome cars on the lead lap, so if you spin out or something crazy happens, you get a bad finish in a hurry, so this was a concern of ours.”

JAMIE MCMURRAY – No. 26 Crown Royal Ford Fusion (Finished 18th) – “I had it in my head that I wanted to lead the first lap and I wrecked all the way from the bottom of the hill to the top. I just couldn’t get any grip and I overdrove and it was 100 percent my fault. Then we got in the back and had a wreck on the first lap that tore the nose up a little bit, and then somebody got in turn four and got in the side of me. It was just a long, long day. We had a really good car, which is encouraging, but once the side got tore up I just lost all the grip I had.” HOW WAS THE HEAT TODAY? “It was really hot. When they had red flags they bring you water, which is awesome. I remember at Loudon a few years ago in the Busch race I thought I was gonna die, so that’s nice to bring water but those cars are hot.”

ELLIOTT SADLER – No. 38 Pedigree Ford Fusion (Finished 8th) – “I’m really happy. Tommy made a great call to get four tires under caution and then come back under green to get a gas-and-go to make up some time. That was the call of the race. We had about a 17th or 18th place car and when he made that call he just got me up there in good, clean air and racing with great guys. I had a ball racing with Boris Said. He gave me a lot of room. I got into him a little bit and he could have retaliated and he didn’t. That just shows what kind of person he is, but, all in all, it was a great day for us. We needed a top 10. Maybe that will give us some momentum going into Daytona.” THAT RED FLAG HAD TO BE TOUGH TO ENDURE WITH 6 TO GO. “The red flag hurt us. I kept waiting for NASCAR to bring us some water and they finally did, but red flags here at Sonoma are not the most fun thing for any driver. I’m pretty whipped. I was good until the red flag happened, but after that I’m OK now. It was a great weekend for us. Raymond and the guys did a really good job Friday and Saturday without Tommy here. I want to congratulate Tommy and his wife, Beth, on their baby and it’s pretty cool to run that good today. It was a great day for us. We needed this.”

BORIS SAID – No. 60 Sobe No Fear Ford Fusion (Finished 9th) – “I guess for being in business seven weeks we should be happy with a ninth-place finish, but we had a top-three car today. It was a little disappointing. I feel like that movie Breaking Away, when the Italians were his heroes and he finally raced a bicycle race with them and they ended up sticking a stick in his spokes and wrecking him. I idolize Tony Stewart. I think he’s the greatest race car driver in the world right now. At the beginning of the race he was faster than me and I let him by. Then all of a sudden he was slower and I went by him, and then he runs into me and runs me off the track. I’m like, â€OK, that’s one thing.’ And then I go back by him and he crashes into me. I still wasn’t mad at him, but when he was flipping me off I was really mad, so I’ll be talking to him Monday morning.” SO HE FLIPPED YOU OFF WHEN HE PASSED YOU? “Yeah, I don’t think he thought I was number one at that point, but I’ll call him Monday morning and we’ll talk and it’ll be fine. It’s an emotional sport. That kind of got us behind. We were running down Kurt and I thought everything was good in sixth, and then right at the end we just burned our rear tires off and I got loose and went off of (turn) 10 and three or four guys got by me. I just kind of hung on until the finish, but for SoBe No Fear, its first time out in NASCAR, all of these regular teams week in and week out would be happy with a top 10, so I’m not gonna cry about ninth-place our first time out. Everything ran great. The crew did a great job. Everybody at Roush, putting the bodies on and helping us out with all the information. The Roush-Yates engines were great. I had a great time. I just wish I could have finished fifth at least. That was kind of my goal to be top five. We were top five all weekend and it was within reach until about 10 or 12 to go and I just made a mistake and went off the track. That was a driver error and I feel bad for the crew that I did that, but it’s a game of mistakes and I made one near the end at the wrong time.”

CARL EDWARDS – No. 99 Office Depot Ford Fusion (Finished 6th) – “Unbelievable, you’re interviewing me after a road course and it’s not because of a spectacular crash or something. I just have to thank Boris Said and all my guys on the Office Depot team, but especially Boris for helping me so much. That’s a lot of fun when you’re running well. That’s a blast.” HOW WAS IT WORKING THROUGH TRAFFIC? “I think I actually passed five or six cars and those are the only five or six I’ve ever passed on a road course in a Cup race, so that was pretty cool. I really had a good time and I just can’t say enough about my team. I’m so glad we came out of here with a good finish.” WHAT ABOUT THE HEAT? “It was a hot day and kind of a grueling race, more than normal, but we’ve all got to suffer through the same thing. I’m not gonna quit.” YOU WERE 38TH IN THIS RACE LAST YEAR. WHAT KIND OF THINGS DID BORIS HELP YOU WITH TO IMPROVE SO MUCH? “I’m not gonna talk about the details, but Boris just helped me a lot. He’s a heck of a guy, a sure motivator and he’s an inspiration to a lot of us, so it’s pretty cool to have him on our side.”

    Dodge/Save Mart 350 - Dodge Post-Race Quotes

KURT BUSCH (No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger) – Finished 5th

“Gordon was definitely the class of the field today. The team did a great job with adjustments. It was a nice steady day for us. We led some laps. We came out just behind them on our pit sequence. We were able to pass a few guys, but right there at the end it was all about track position. Ryan Newman, my teammate, and I used the same setup. That was great. Both of us have limited road racing experience. Maybe we learned something today for the future.

“We tweaked on our setup and we ended up going back to our original starting point, so we didn’t quite learn what we needed to during the race, but it was a nice solid day. We set ourselves on a solid pace, and that’s how we made it to the end. It was a nice top-five finish. I thought we could run just as good as Newman and he finished second. They all came out ahead of us on the pit sequence. We raced with them. We held off Boris Said down the stretch, so it was a good day for the Miller Lite Dodge. That’s three good runs in a row and we’ll just keep getting it hopefully.

“It’s been great to come from my team and then their experience with Rusty. We were running on adrenaline early on. Now we’re starting to click. There’s plenty of time left for things to go right, and there’s plenty of time for things to go wrong. We feel like we we’re poised to do what we need to do.”

RYAN NEWMAN (No. 12 Alltel Dodge Charger) – Finished 2nd

“I wish we could have won the race, but at least we had ourselves in position. We got our second top five of the season, and I’m ready for Daytona. The red flag hurt me a little bit. I’m a little sore. I was quicker than Jeff Gordon at the start of the day. He was quicker at the start of a run, and I was quicker at the end of a run. It was the end of the run, so Terry blocked me and held me up a little bit. He did what he needed to do, and I’m happy we finished second.

“It was a good day for the Alltel Dodge. It was our second top five finish of the season. It’s pretty late in the season for that, but it was a good effort by Penske Racing. I appreciate the opportunity to drive the car and finish second.

“He (Terry Labonte) was definitely holding me up a little bit. He definitely made it hard, but that’s his job. There’s two good passing zones at this racetrack, and I got him at one of them. The heat was bad. I had a cramp in my left butt cheek, and it’s still there, so I’m trying to get out of here.

“We’ve improved upon our finishes here in the past, so it’s an opportunity for us to come back next year and improve a little more and be at the right position at the right time. We ran second at Watkins Glen in 2002 or 2003. We just need track position. We’ve had tires spin here. We’ve had brake problems. Things went right for us today and we came away with a second-place finish. About lap 60 I started hurting pretty good. On every caution I tried to lift my butt up in the seat and that’s hard to do when you’ve got your seat belt strapped in tight.

“It’s significant from where we finished, but we didn’t look at it as that significant coming in. We didn’t say this is the place we’ve got to turn our season around.”

KASEY KAHNE (No. 9 Dodge Dealers/UAW/SRT Dodge Charger) – Finished 31st

“We had a good car today. It was fine 20 laps in. We were hitting our marks and easily had a top 10 car. I felt good the whole time in the car. I never had a problem with the heat. I feel like we’re getting a handle on the road courses. It just takes time. This was our best finish here and it could have been a lot better if we hadn’t had a flat tire at the end.”

SCOTT RIGGS (No. 10 Valvoline/Stanley Tools Dodge Charger) – Finished 27th

“The foot didn't really bother me too bad. It was sore for sure, but you forget all about it when you are racing. This was not the finish that we wanted, but we will take it. I have some improving I need to do on these road courses, but we will also work on improving the car and the setup before Watkins Glen. I am proud of these guys for working hard all weekend. We came back from being a lap down at one point and having a flat tire under green to finish about where we qualified. The Valvoline/Stanley Tools Dodge was the best it had been all race at the end.”

BOBBY LABONTE (No. 43 Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge Charger) – Finished 35th

“I put myself out of the race a couple of times today at least. That really got us behind. The 18 car got spun out by somebody he said. The 88 hit somebody and I hit the 88 and knocked the radiator out. It ended our day. My bad for the day.”

About two hours after he finished 14th in Sunday's Dodge/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway, Brian Vickers appeared on television to announce he would drive a Toyota Camry for Red Bull Racing in 2007.

Vickers, who little more than a week ago revealed a "mutual" decision to sever his four-year relationship with Hendrick Motorsports, announced a multi-year deal with Red Bull, one of three teams that will race Toyotas next season, on SPEED's Wind Tunnel.

With his result Sunday, Vickers moved up two positions in the Nextel Cup standings to 20th. He has two top-five and four top-10 finishes in 16 starts.

Vickers, who won Saturday's AutoZone Elite Grand National West Series race at Infineon, using a car formerly driven by the late Ricky Hendrick and carrying Hendrick's number and paint scheme, said he was "committed" to Hendrick Motorsports for the rest of the 2006 season.

Red Bull previously announced a limited program of Nextel Cup races at the end of this season using driver Bill Elliott. Toyota is scheduled to make its first Nextel Cup start at the 2007 Daytona 500.

SONOMA, Calif. -- NASCAR's accelerated timetable for unleaded fuel won't cause any major problems, one engine builder said at Sonoma on Saturday.

The transition to unleaded fuel was originally scheduled for 2008, but NASCAR pushed up that date last week, saying it hopes to use unleaded fuel for all three major series in time for Speedweeks next February.

The ARCA series, which uses similar engines, will use the unleaded fuel to assist NASCAR in restrictor-plate engine testing. The unleaded fuel will make its NASCAR debut in the July 29 Busch Series race at Gateway.

Initially, engine builders were concerned about losing the natural lubrication that leaded fuel provides, but teams have found suitable substitutes.

"It was not as bad as we thought it was going to be. There is a lot of coating process stuff out there," said Danny Lawrence, an engine builder for Richard Childress Racing since 1985. "It is going to be one of those things where if you just coat the valves and some of the parts, and if you don't have excessive wear, it is not going to be bad at all."

The change to unleaded fuel has been planned for several years, but advances in coating technology were a major reason NASCAR finally mandated the change.

Speaking before the season, Roush-Yates head engine builder Doug Yates said the switch was going to be considerably easier than earlier attempts.

"It [coating advances] was not readily available, but now, I don't think it's going to be a very hard transition," Yates said. "There are some coatings that you apply to the valves. The valve seat recession was the biggest problem, and I think that we can overcome that pretty easily."

Yates had pushed for NASCAR to accelerate the use of unleaded fuel.

"That's something we need to do as a group," Yates said. "I'm glad that they're moving that way."

Still, the switch is a significant cost to teams. Lawrence estimates that RCR has already spent $250,000 in testing the new fuel -- "We really haven't gotten going good yet," he said -- and a significant portion of that money comes from simulated engine runs.

"We actually ran 600 [simulated] miles at California Speedway and that is a really hard track for something like that," Lawrence said. "We built a race motor and put it through the normal thing."

The costs of testing the fuel will rise dramatically if teams experience problems with the switch.

"If the cylinder walls look bad and the pistons look bad, we will have to do a lot of research and development to solve the problems," Lawrence said.

NASCAR's former fuel supplier, Unocal, employed teams to test unleaded fuel on a limited basis. Engine builders had problems adjusting the power levels in the motors, but Lawrence said that the newer blend, provided by Sunoco, has alleviated that.

"I have been hearing the same thing," Lawrence said. "A lot of people are not as afraid of this fuel as the old fuel. The Unocal fuel, the last unleaded fuel that they made -- we were actually testing that for them -- the more fuel you put in it, the more power you made.

"This fuel is not like that. We have done power tests on it and it is really close, power-wise, [to where] Sunoco is now. It is not going to be as bad as we thought it was going to be."
