Chapter 1 - New Orleans: Sold down the River
|
About this site Hurricane Katrina was a natural disaster that escalated into a major catastrophe due to ideologically driven policy decisions. The endangerment to New Orleans resulting from those decisions was well known in advance. The funding cuts that caused the catastrophe were willfully made in spite of the foreknowledge of the consequences. We have established this site to document the foreknowledge of the danger, the intentional dismantling of mitigation legislation, the deadly chaos resulting from those funding cuts and the administration's post hurricane attempts to make even deeper cuts in essential spending. We also explore how discrimination and poverty compound at the tragedy and how both have increased since Katrina. Also we explore the many forms of profiteering that have ensued both financial and political. How to use this site The information that we have collected has been arranged into 11 chapters and is a compilation of articles, photos, videos and audio productions. All of the chapters can be accessed by the links at the left of this page and all of the other pages herein. What you can do Please read the articles and inform yourself. Learn how the policies of this administration caused untold death and suffering and how the same administration is responding by pressing for even more draconian cuts to essential services and infrastructure. Use this information to influence your lawmakers and other elected officials. We must not let this information become buried only to have similar disasters repeated because of the same failed ideology. Use the information to inform others and to influence policy.
