- Please click on home -very good satire??? or something of the
torture satan Gonzales.
The vote on Gonzales will probably be Wednesday. Please take the time
to call as many Dem senators as you can today and
tomorrow.
They are nearly all taking tallies of out-of-state callers as well as
of constituents. Typically, they will need cover to do the right
thing, which is to oppose the nomination of one of the chief
architects of BushCo's Torture Policy.
Call here. Write here. Urge Your Senators to Oppose Gonzales In the
positions he took as White House Counsel, Mr. Gonzales set the stage
for the abuse that happened at Abu Ghraib and other U.S. military
prisons around the world.
Alberto Gonzales was the architect of the legal strategy that led
President Bush to order that the Geneva Conventions should not be
applied to the conflict in Afghanistan.
He also holds the extreme position that the President as Commander-in-
Chief doesn't have to follow laws passed by Congress. This is
contrary to the position of Attorney General – the nation's chief law
enforcement official.
Urge your Senators to oppose the nomination of Alberto Gonzales by
filling out the form below.
I urge you to send a message to the rest of the world that the United
States doesn't condone torture and steadfastly abides by
the rule of law by opposing Alberto Gonzales Nomination for Attorney
General.
As Counsel to the President, Alberto Gonzales advised the President
that human rights laws and the laws of war do not bind him in the
fight against terrorism.
In doing this, Mr. Gonzales helped to open the door to abuses that
have undermined discipline in the military, put American fighting men
and women at greater risk, and denied the United States the moral
high ground.
These illegal practices, and the misguided arguments that support
them, are unworthy of this country and betray our most fundamental
values.
Senate confirmation hearings also highlighted Alberto Gonzales'
extreme position that the President has power as Commander-in-Chief
to ignore laws passed by Congress. Asked repeatedly to distance
himself from this extreme notion, Mr. Gonzales refused.
While recognizing the "gravity" of the issue and the need for
a "great deal of care" in addressing it, Mr. Gonzales refused to say
that the President is bound by the law. To the contrary, he said he
believed the President could ignore laws if he thought they
unconstitutionally infringed on his powers as Commander-in-Chief.
The U.S. Constitution ensures that no one, not even the President
during wartime, is above the law.
Mr. Gonzales has an inspiring personal history of struggle and
opportunity that is, in many ways, uniquely American. But the
positions he has taken, and policies he has facilitated, are
antithetical to the very concept of human rights and the rule of law.
They run counter to the position of Attorney General -- the nation's
chief law enforcement official.
It's too bad that there's so much support for such a hideous person.
Gonz is a terrible addition to this administration and
espeically for such an important position.
