My pace would depend somewhat on the people I an riding with. If I rode alone, I
would expect to be somewhere about 16-17 for a mostly flat ride and calm
weather. I think that I might be able to average 20 in a paceline with 5+
people, but I am almost certain that I will get dropped on any meaningful climb.
I've got plenty of miles under my belt this year (too many, actually, at
almost 6000), but no speed work and 25 pounds over ideal weight. I should also
mention that I have little natural talent for cycling. It is mostly misguided
persistence that gets me through...
I guess the ideal group for me would be 18-21 mph paceline on the flats,
regrouping on climbs, and 10-15 minutes off the bike every 90 minutes at a
mini-mart. If you guys are willing to let me join your line, I'm willing to give
it a try. Common sense, however, suggests that if your group is digging to make
20, I have no business trying to keep up.
Alternatively, if there are any riders out there who want to ride at a slower
pace, I would be happy to do that. It would be a lot less stressful, and I'm
willing to ride with anyone who has good reason to believe that they can finish
the ride in under 14 hours total time.

Jim,
At about what pace do you think you will do? I would say there are at least 3
major paces. 20, 18, and 16. All of these paces get you back by dark. 16 is
an
easy B pace. A solid B rider should be able to maintain this pace for the
entire
ride. The 18 pace would be for any B+ riders, or A riders the first time. It
takes a
lot of training to get to the 20 pace, but 18 is very doable with a good group
and
some strong B+/A riders.
Also, 15 or 17 are possible paces. At 15, you need to keep the stops short and
to
the point. 17 is another good pace, as the route is mostly flat and very doable
even if you don't ride at that pace in Westchester.
Our 125 yesterday was a good example of a typical hilly Westchester ride. We
averaged 17.9, but this was largely the same group that has done 19.9 on the
double in years past.
You will be able to keep a higher pace than you might think. Now is the time to
post if you think you want to ride, but not keep up with the fast group.
