For any of your training for long distance rides, you should read "Long
Distance, a Year of living strenuously," by Bill McKibben. McKibben, the
author of several good books about global warming and the environment,
decided to train seriously for cross-country ski racing for a year up in the
Adirondacks, and wrote about his experience. It's a wonderful look at the
issue of endurance, middle age, and why we spend so much time keeping our
bodies in shape.
