For Route 22, it all depends on the time of day. That stretch is actually a beautiful section to ride. If you leave early enough in the morning, the road is empty and its a great stretch to settle down and get into a wonderful rhythm...

In terms of routes--there are some nice roads from approximately Brewster to Pawling, tracking northbound but using roads that are a bit west of Rte 22. Many of us have taken this route and I can give you the specs. However there are definitely more hills than on Rte 22 (which I agree is a horrible road between Brewster and Patterson).
