A couple notes...

Cross bikes with cross tires are fine.
Mountain bikes or hybrids with slicks or semi-slicks
are fine, too, as long as you are confident in your
ability and the road conditions.

In the rogaine section, there will be different point
values assigned to each checkpoint. These are based
on how far away, or difficult to get to, they are.
Which ones you decide to visit is up to you!

Genesis Adventures has given us a $50 gift certificate
which will be awarded to the top finishing newbie
(solo or racing with a non-newbie)or team of newbies.

Joe DeSena, our amazing Tub-a-Thon supporter, is
hosting a couple of really cool upcoming races that
you defintely want to check out. There will be a
snowshoe marathon and half-marathon on March 3rd and
the Pittsfield Ultra Challenge (with BIG cash
prizes)on June 9th. Go to http://www.peak.com/ to
check it out. There will be flyers at the race, too.

We have over 30 people signed up for Sunday, including
an international racers, members of the US National
Orienteering Team and even members of the USARA
National championship team???

If anyone is currently racing solo and wants to be
teamed up with someone else, let me know and I'll try
to do some match making.

See you Sunday!

Jennifer

I-95/128 for the Middlesex Turnpike (Don’t get on
Route 3!) and turn left at the light. Go straight all
the way --turns into Lowell Street –for about 3.5
miles. Note: Make sure to go straight on Lowell Street
where 2A veers off to the left ~ 3 miles! Arlington
Reservoir is on the right. If you want to map it, the
address is aprox. 270 Lowell Street, Arlington, MA.

distributed.

10:00am- Be ready to leave on your bikes at 10:00am
SHARP.

NOTE: While you are allowed to return to the parking
lot (your car) at any time during the event, it will
be inconvenient, so be prepared to have everything you
will need with you. This includes your food, water,
mandatory gear and trekking shoes!

The race will have a 4 hour cutoff time, so everyone
can expect to be wrapped up not long after 2pm.

Mandatory Gear:
Compass
Whistle
Cell Phone
Drivers License
2 pens, fine point, felt tip permanent pen recommended
Helmet (must be buckled and worn at all times on the
bike or DQ!)

Recommended gear:
Extra warm clothes
Watch
Hand/toe warmers
Extra cash
Food
Fluids
Eye Protection
Pack to carry everything in
Rear red flasher for bike

Format:

Just a little about this, but not too much! There
will be two sections, one will be mandatory to
complete and the other will be a Rogaine Format.
Don’t know what that is?? Don’t worry about it--here
is all you need to know…

• There are MORE checkpoints on the map that I expect
anyone will be able to get. Yes, this means that it is
very doubtful that anyone will complete the entire
course. That is OK-- read on….

• Each checkpoint has a point value. You need to get
as many points as possible and return to the finish
line before the cut-off.

• The cut-off will be exactly 4 hours after the gun
goes off, so bring a good watch!

• You will be penalized 10 points for EVERY minute
after 4 hours that you return to the finish line.
There is no penalty for returning before the cut-off,
but there is no bonus given for getting back early.

• Finishers will be ranked by the total number of
points they accumulated by the cut-off, provided they
also completed the mandatory section. In case of a
tie in points, time will be the deciding factor.

Schwag bags:

A HUGE thank you to Teva, City Sports and Eastern
Mountain Sports (in no particular order) for providing
so many goodies for our schwag bags. Everyone gets one
and I can guarantee that it will be one of the nicest
schwag bags you have ever gotten. Please remember to
support those who support us!

Prizes:

Originally I said there would be booby prizes awarded,
but I lied. Thanks once again to our fabulous
supporters, plus Genesis Adventure Races, we have
FANTASTIC prizes for all categories-- top solo male,
top solo female, top co-ed, top finishers overall,
plus other prizes for “Special categories” to no doubt
become evident as the race progresses…. Oh, and of
course The Taz Cup will be awarded to the individual
or team that has the fastest combined time from both
Saturday and Sunday.

After Event and Awards Party:

Thank you very much to David Darby who has offered to
host the after-event party at his house in Bedford,
about a 10 minute drive from the Arlington Reservoir
(we will have directions and a map at the race for
everyone at registration).

Photographer:

Martin Flohr Photography will be at the race and
snapping your mug on the course, so be prepared to
smile, look tough, or, at least look competent?

Tub-a-Thon:

A HUGE thank you goes out to Joe DeSena, a fellow
adventure racer from Vermont, who is unable to make
the event, but has generously offered to give a $25 to
the Danelle Ballangee Recovery Fund for EVERY racer
who gets in the hot tub (must be submerged up to knees
and elbows). Just think about it, 30 racers times $25
is…a lot of money. So, bring your swimsuit (thongs not
allowed, Tom Smith). Also, we ask that if you come to
the party, please consider bringing a drink or food
item to share (homemade brownies and chocolate chip
cookies strongly encouraged).

Donations:

As a reminder, we are asking everyone to consider
making a minimum $25 donation to the Danelle Ballangee
Recovery Fund for each day of training
(http://sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/general/news/story?id=2704879).
This is not mandatory as there is no entry fee as this
is not a “race.” While this is a simulated race,
complete with prizes, remember that this is for
training. For insurance reasons, this is organized
training. Along those lines, please remember to use
your best judgment out on the course, be safe and be
respectful of anyone you encounter in the parks or on
the roads and sidewalks. This is for fun, not all the
marbles.

Start your 2007 racing season with new navigation equipment from AR Navigation Supplies.  Are you still using that old swag UTM plotter with the CP hole drilled out of line?  Are you still guessing the distance to the next CP?  Are you tired of having the map hanging around your neck a getting tangled while you ride?  Take a look at the solutions to these problems from AR Navigation Supplies.

The Basic Roamer AR is the New Navigation Tool of Choice for the USARA as well as the most accurate and functional navigation tool available for adventure racers.  It includes UTM tools, distance scales, magnetic declination help, degree wheel and many other features. http://www.arnavsupplies.com/brar.html

Fitting the Mountain Bike Map Holder will place the map securely in front of you making it easy to read and always available.  No more reaching behind you or getting tangled up in the map while riding.

AR Navigation Supplies has all the equipment to make map preparation and event navigation easy including map cases, compasses, fine waterproof pens, MyTopo maps and Navigation Training Guides for many areas, with more exciting new products coming in the spring.

Please take a look at our new flyer http://www.arnavsupplies.com/files/ARNavFlyer_001.pdf and check out all the great products and resources on our website.

Hi all! Just a quick reminder that the price increases for The Frigid
Infliction on Feb 1 - get your registration in ASAP to make the
cutoff. The course is looking great - we're going to have some good
navigation for you all in some really cool areas, and I'm personally
really looking forward to trying out this year's tyrolean. The course
designers are doing their usual evil best to get you lost and pissed
off. I think Jim's quote was something like "what can we find out
here that will cause a rash through snow pants *..." There are
already teams coming from as far away as North Carolina and Ohio, plus
a team from Ontario - come join us!

Green Mountain Adventure Racing Association wants to get your
adventure racing year started early with The Frigid Infliction - the
northeast's first adventure race of 2007. Get away from the average
winter crowds and put your cold-weather skills to a true test in some
of the gnarliest terrain Vermont has to offer.

What: Navigation, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, postholing, ropes work
Where: In and around Bolton Valley, VT
When: Saturday, March 3rd, 2007
Who: Teams of 2 or 3, coed or single-sex.
Cost: $240 for 2, $330 for 3 - $20 discount per GMARA member. Price
increases Feb 1, so register soon.
Discounts available for college teams - contact me for details.

USARA sanctioned this year - start earning points early!

As always, we'll be holding a navigation clinic at registration the
night before and don't forget our famous post-race party: food, drink,
massages, hottub, and prizes prizes prizes!

Just a reminder to everyone that this weekend's TD4 is on and we've received a great response to these awesome training sessions. Again, you don't have to come to both unless you are chasing after the "Taz Cup."

For the Ringwood training on Saturday we recommend that everybody pick up a copy of Rod Johnson's "Ramapough Mountain" mapset available at: http://www.map-maker.net/maps.html or at certain outdoor stores: Ramsey Outdoor, for example.  Alternatively the NY/NJ Trails Conference "North Jersey Trails" map (available at most regional outdoor stores) is a good substitute.  There will be no UTM plotting. Everybody will receive a topo map with the CPs pre-plotted but you may wish to navigate off the better maps mentioned above. The topo you receive won't have the major trail systems marked.

If the trails at Ringwood are too icy then the training will be all on foot. We will keep an eye on the weather and will let you know. More details about both days are located below. We hope to see you all there.

Our Hero, Taz

Join NEARA and NYARA for the our first TD4 - Tazmanian Devil Double Dog Dare which will be made up of two separate training sessions on February 3 & 4.  Both events will be free but we ask that each participant
considers making a $25 donation to the Danelle Ballengee Recovery Fund. On February 3, the event will take place at RingwoodState Park in New Jersey and on February 4 the event will be held in Lexington, Massachussets.

In order to be eligible to win the coveted Taz Cup (named in honor of Danelle's life-saving dog, Taz!), participants must partake in BOTH events. We will take the winning times from each event to determine the lucky winners of the Taz Cup Award! Sound crazy? It is!!

Here are the details:

February 3:
Get up off yer butt and join us at Ringwood State Park for the TD4. The adventure racing season is upon us and this will be a great time to show us how well your winter training is going. For you newbies out there, this is a perfect opportunity to learn the ropes and see what AR is all about.

Location: Ringwood State Park, NJ - Shepherd Lake Recreation Area
Time: 10:00AM
What: 3-4 Hour adventure
Course: Foot, mountain biking, orienteering
Categories: Solo or Teams of 2. Fabulous (well, our idea of fabulous and your idea of fabulous may be very different indeed) prizes for first place co-ed team, all-male, all-female, and solo male and solo female.
Entry fee: None (this is organized training only), but there is a suggested donation to
Danelle Ballangee recovery fund, $25/per person
RSVP (so we have enough maps) to Denise Mast at denise@...

February 4:
Birth Place of the American Revolution SubURBAN (Training) Adventure Challenge.
You read about it in your history books, now you can explore the birth
place of the American Revolution in a way that would even make Ken Burns
jealous. Come and train over the same grounds where Paul Revere made his
famous midnight ride, where the shot heard 'round the world was shot and run
through the same woods where the colonists dropped their rakes and picked
up muskets to face off against those pesky red coats.

Location: Lexington, Mass - Harrington School parking lot, 148 Maple Street, Lexington.
Time: 10:00AM
What: 3-4 Hour adventure
Course: Foot, mountain biking, orienteering, and both city and
park navigation (if snow, a ski or snowshoe option may be offered)
Categories: Solo or Teams of 2. Booby prizes for first place co-ed team,
all-male, all-female, and solo male and solo female.
Entry fee: None (this is organized training only), but there is a suggested donation to
Danelle Ballangee recovery fund, $25/per person
Contact: Jennifer Shultis at zipline68@...

Directions: From I-95/128 (either direction) take exit 32 for the Middlesex
Turnpike (don't get on Rt 3!). At stop light, turn left and go just over 2
miles (Middlesex Turnpike turns into Lowell Street) to Maple Street. School
is on right and you can enter from either Lowell Street or from Maple
Street. Go to back parking lot.

Come prepared to bike to the start, but carrying your running shoes. Full
gear list to come, but will be very simple and straight-forward.

Be ready for a start unlike any other you've done before!

Folks,

This year's WeCeFAR Swamp Stomp is co-sponsored by SmartWool and ARFE to be a completely green race.
Thanks to the great folks at LEKI, the race will be completely carbon neutral--and yes, we even thought about you folks that are traveling from far away! We've purchased enough carbon offsets to make your travel to the race and the race directors' travels to set up the race entirely carbon free!
And at this year's Treats for Trash checkpoints, you'll spot yummy organic whole-food bars from LaraBar.
Your race T-shirts are made of 100% sustainable merino wool from SmartWool's sheep in New Zealand, and you'll be able to use your Swag Bags again and again, since they're made of 100% recycled cotton. Take it to the grocery store! Take it to the gym! Take it out on the town!
You can expect a mystery event during the race, as well, that centers around the environment, and don't forget about the water-bottle and sneaker-recycling efforts that will be at race check in.
Come ready to answer some questions during the Leave No Trace seminar during the pre-race meeting, as well. You could win a great pair of SmartWool socks!
And now, for the news everyone's been waiting for: WHAT'S THIS YEAR'S BEST GARBAGE PRIZE?
SmartWool's upped the ante, with terrific Synergy jackets for the first place team and great microweight base layers for the second place team.
We can't wait to see what you guys bring in for us--see you at the nation's first-ever entirely green adventure race, WeCeFAR's SmartWool Swamp Stomp!

Cheers,
Yi Shun

The Brenninkmeyer family was devastated to learn that her younger
brother, Kees, perished in a backcountry ski accident in early
January. He and his beloved girlfriend were on a 30 day hut trip in
the Banff area. The details are still being investigated, but their
bodies were found in a snow field under a meter of snow, probably the
victims of a collapsed snow shelter of some kind. Here is an article

Adventurous Concepts is pleased to announce this year's Florida Coast to Coast Adventure Race (FC2C). The race will be held on Memorial Day weekend, May 25-28, 2007 in Northern Florida. Yeap, that's right, we are taking FC2C up north.  The 3-day adventure race will have competitors run, trek, kayak, bike, and navigate nonstop for up to 80 hours.

If you feel that you are not quite up to the challenge of a 3-day race, the FC2C has a relay category which allows teams to have up to six team members while any four are racing between transition areas.

Hi everyone,

Danelle was released from the hospital on December 31, after a
successful pelvis surgery and blood transfusions. She is now staying
at her parents' house in Evergreen, Colorado, taking things day by
day. She says she's been super appreciative of all the support she's
received from friends and strangers alike -- people in the
adventure racing community and beyond who have reached out to her.
She says that it's overwhelming and amazing to have such support,
and she is extremely grateful. (Taz is there too, keeping a close
eye on her.)

She's on the road to recovery, but it's certain to be a long
journey. She will need continued support to keep improving.

For anyone who's been wondering about her insurance situation, this
is the short of it: She has insurance, but it's a policy that has a
fairly low limit, one that she's already exceeded due to surgeries,
blood transfusions and a lengthy hospital stay. Her policy will not
cover the helicopter and plane transports incurred during her
rescue.

Pam Minard, a longtime friend of Danelle's, has established a fund
for her through First Bank of Colorado. The branch that holds
Danelle's account is in Silverthorne, Colorado. There are currently
two ways to contribute to the fund, called the Danelle Ballengee
Fund:

1. Go to any First Bank of Colorado or First Bank of California and
fill out a deposit slip made out to the Danelle Ballengee Fund, or
go to the teller and say you'd like to contribute to the Danelle
Ballengee Fund. The teller should be able to pull up the account
number and help you make a contribution.

2. Mail a check made out to the Danelle Ballengee Fund: First Bank
of Colorado, Silverthorne Branch, P.O. Box 347, Silverthorne, CO
80498.

Danelle is reticent to ask her friends for money, despite the fact
that she's going to need help. I'm sending this message because I
know people have been wondering how they can contribute to her
recovery.

Feel free to forward this message to anyone you like.

And for anyone who hasn't heard or wants to know more, here's a link
to a story by Brian Metzler on espn.com:

2007 Smartwool Swamp Stomp 30-Hour AR Regular Registration Closing January
18

Regular registration for Florida’s premier long-course adventure race—the
2007 Smartwool Swamp Stomp 30-Hour Adventure Race—will end on January 18.
Registering by this deadline will save teams from $50-75 per team on the
late registration fee.

Now in its fourth year, the 2007 race will again take place over President’s
Day weekend (February 17-18) and take racers to new wilderness areas within
one hour of Tampa. The 2006 USARA National Champions, Team EMS, will compete
with teams from Florida, Georgia, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania,
Tennessee, Connecticut, Virginia, and North Carolina.

This race continues to draw top teams from across the United States.
According to Co-Race Director Shawn Dietrich, “The Swamp Stomp continues to
be an excellent value in a 30 hour race—especially for out-of-state teams.
We supply the boats and no support crew is needed. Jessica, Kip and I have
spent a lot of time creating a race that is a good blend of the coolest new
places, and challenging navigation, while the rogaine style will provide
excellent opportunities to strategize.”

Dietrich continued, “With Smartwool on board in 2007 we have great cash/gear
prizes for the premier coed four-person division, gear prizes for other
divisions AND special prize packages for some “bonus Check Points”. We’ll
also have a pretty heavy bag of schwag—each racer will receive a pair of
Smartwool socks and a lightweight Smartwool long sleeve shirt.” The 2007
Smartwool Swamp Stomp is a qualifier for the 2007 USARA National
Championships.

January 4, 2007 – CtoC Challenge Update

With less than 2 ½ months before the start of the 07 CtoC race the
race field is almost filled. Seven teams from Costa Rica including
Red Bull, Battery and Thule plus 4 international teams are registered
for this year's race. Four spaces are still available.

A few leaks from the route design team. The first one is that the
there will be a whitewater rafting section included in the race route
and it will be on a class III – IV section of the Pacaure River.
Also, one of the trekking stages will take teams over the Continental
Divide at an altitude of over 10,000 feet along a very remote trail.
The distance of the race has been calculated between 450 and 475 km,
depending on the specific route taken by teams between checkpoints.

There are a few racers that are looking for team members so if you are
interested in joining the race but don't have a team let us know and
we will put you in contact with them.

We hope to see you in March.

Our friends at HVO are putting this on (I think):

Well it's time again to don our bestest, speediest up-hill shoes for
the second running of the prestigious Bear Mountain Gut Chuck.

We promised ourselves we would keep fitter this winter, but old
habits are hard to kick. Time to redeem yourself ! Dust off those
trail shoes, slap on some sun screen and brave the fidget winter
temperatures (if we're unlucky it could be a brisk 50, burr!). A
quick uphill of 2.3Km gaining 375 meters (1.4 miles in 1230ft) and
then the same back down. This will surely get your training and your
day off to a great start.

So on Jan 1st, 2007 in the parking lot next to the Ice Skating rink
come rain, hail or snow we will get the year off to a good
(intension) start.

Where is the start? Parking Lot at Bear Mountain Lodge (See link for
details)

When? Jan 1st, 11am Start.

Entry Fee? $6 per car entire to the main parking lot. Fill those cars
up.

Route and rules. Do your own research on route choice. Minimum
running on the roads, this is a hill run after all. See map for
details for "OUT OF BOUNDS" areas.

Why? It sounded good after a few pints.....

Stupendous prizes will be handed out to anybody that shows up.

An update on Danelle...I just got off the phone with her and she has been in
a lot of pain today. Originally they were shooting to place her at her
parent's house this weekend but because of how bad she's in pain, they've
decided to keep her admitted until she can get in a wheelchair by herself.
She hasn't been up to receiving calls yet but might possibly have her
computer sometime next week and could possibly return your emails. She
wanted to tell everyone how much it means to her to have everyone's support.
   Thank You- Michelle Lyman
