I don't think you'll find a shoe like that, but these work really well
in combination with a gore-tex shoe to prevent the sand coming in:

Has anyone found an AR shoe that does not let Moab sand come through the top of the shoe? I swear that stuff could work its way into a can of beef stew.
Male and female racer looking for a third for the Longest Day. Male
or female doesn't matter. Would prefer someone capable of middle of
the pack or better but really looking to do better than middle of the
pack. Laid back and looking to have a good time no matter where we
finish.

We built our own paddle box for PQ, and it cost us about 20$. There is no sense investing several hundred dollars for something that is only probably going to be used at one event. Just use the dimensions on the mandatory list for size and it just says hard shell, so heck you could even use thin ply wood, we used a strong plexi glass type of material and riveted the pieces together.

There are several requests for teams that people have sent to us. SO.......if you are looking at forming a team, picking up that extra person, or looking to join on a team, let us know. The Ultimate Adirondacks are just over a month away June 24th and is shaping up to be a great race to start the Ultimate Series. The racers are a mixed breed, some newbies and vets, males and females, and even an international racer who will be in country / town for a few day and loves the 'dacks.
The Ultimate Adirondacks is the first of three in our 12 hour race series. Don't loose out in earning points for the series and our grand prize of entrance into a multiday international adventure race. Keep checking our updates page on our website www.ultimate-race.com for facts, info. and perhaps tips on our races.
Signing up for multiple races earns you discounted prices. The more you race with us the more you save. All NYARA, NEARA and GMARA teams also earn an additional 10% off their race fees.
Volunteers needed too!!! Not only are their teams out there looking for help but so is Ultimate Sports Association. Volunteering is a great way to learn about AR if you are new. An awesome way to be a part of something that gives back to the kids on our communities. And a vital part to Ultimate Races success. Check out our volunteer page at www.ultimate-race.com to learn more.
So sign up today for 1, 2, or all 3 races in the Ultimate Race Series. Or perhaps the 36 hour option is something you'd prefer. Let us know if you'd like to volunteer. Or tell us that you are looking to compete and we'll match you up with others with similar skills and talents. (no this is not Adventure Racing Match.com).
I've recently started using lights from DiNotte Lighting. For the
past few years at expedition events I've used some sort of LED based
lighting (Digital Nitehawks etc...) and have generally been quite
happy.
They offer 3W and 5W LED based lights that run on AA batteries. You
can use disposable types or rechargeables. Rechargeables with a
charger can be purchased from DiNotte as well.
The 5W light puts out 120 lumens. Similar to a 12-15 watt halogen in
their claims. And better looking light (in my opinion) than an old
15w Nite Rider light I have. Being dull by nature I took all my old
bike lights out to the garage one night just to compare. Other than
an old 25 watt halogen with one of those massive 2.5 hour burn time
water bottle batteries the DiNotte light was hands down the
brightest.
Pricing is very nice on the DiNotte. Under $199 gets you a 5W light,
a set of rechargeable AA's, charger and all the attachments.
They are miniscule. 210 grams w/ batteries.
Burn times. With one set of Lithiums one night and a set of
Rechargeables the next I was able to ride roughly from midnight to
sunrise each night at the recent Endorphin Fix. So, I think they may
be a bit conservative on the burn time estimates.

I have found that I can get three nights of light out of a
combination of a NR Moab light with a single battery and two Cateye
Opticube lights (or two Cateye EL-400s).
The key, of course, is carefully managing light use -- the Cateye's
use disposable batteries and have a long life so they can be used
whenever you don't have your main light on. The Moab is only
used "as needed" on technical stuff. With a team of three or four
riders, it's pretty easy to get by with only one or two of the
Moab's burning at any one time (usually the last rider in a group of
three or riders two and four in a four person team).
Another setup that gives even more light is using an ultrabright,
like the Moab, with one or two Cateye EL-500s. A single Cateye EL-
500 works for me in virtually any conditions and two provide a ton
of light.
Our team recently did the White Rim Trail (103 mile non-technical
trail in Moab) as a night ride, and I estimate that I only used the
Moab light for 2 hours total. (1/2 moon for about half the night
helped).
We also have some more info on lights on our website
(http://www.racingwithgiants.com) under the "Rookie Arena" tab -- Go
Rookie Arena>>Mt. Bike>>Lighting
best wishes,
John

I currently use a Niterider 6v non-digital 10W system for night mt bikes.
This has worked perfect for 24 hour races with only 6-8 hours of night
riding. However I am prepping for multi day Expedition race and was curious
what others use for a possible 3 nights of mt biking.
The lumens from my niterider is great but the rechargable NiMH pack only
lasts 2h 30m. I could buy a water bottle style NiMH which might get me
8 hours. But at $80 each and the need for maybe 3 each that gets expensive.
I even found some good online instructions to build your own battery packs.
What do other do? Buy lots of expensive rechargables batteries? Does anyone
have any good luck with LED systems which use less batteries?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Some of you asked that I post whatever I found on this subject. Looks
like
MandatoryGear.com is the best option. Their "Cool Tights" can be
ordered in
different colors. For women, Danskin also has some capri-length
tights, but
nothing for men.
Thanks to all who responded.

Whoops, sorry about that last post, it wasn't meant for the group.
On this one, I already checked Sierra Trading post. They have some tights in different colors, but I didn't find anything currently in stock that would work for either of us. I'm going to try Danskin now.
