Has anyone found any good options for the protective padding required for the whitewater swim? I have used rollerblading pads in the past, but that only covers knees and elbows, and we need thigh and shin protection too. The only thing I'm finding is stuff for motocross racing, but it's pretty hefty stuff.
Let's not mince words here: the male adventure racing world couldn't be more terrified-

To answer your question, Chris, and members at large
of FFFPE (Fleisig's Fashion Faux Pas Enthusiasts,
pronounced Fffffffffffppe) there are two events going
on at EMS right now.
TODAY, Thursday, April 27th is Club Day. Bring in a
membership card to ANY outdoor club (NYARA, NEARA,
NEMBA, AMC, your local running/triathlon club, etc....
I'm not aware of any exceptions...maybe bike repair
labor?).
Starting tomorrow through Sunday is the Spring Upgrade
Your Gear Sale. Anybody gets 20% off storewide.
Basically, it's the same discount; you can just get it
a day earlier (today) if you are a member of an
outdoor club.
You do not need a coupon for any of these days to get
the discount--but you will need either your membership
card if you go today or some people may have received
a card in the mail promoting Club Day--that is fine,
too.
Any questions? Let me know.

with the angles in the handles. Make an offer...

sport and its FREE! (Thanks to our great friends at EMS).
Don't forget, Robyn will be the guest instructor at the camp on Friday!

All,
My teammate had a last minute emergency and I'm in need of someone for
the Breakaway Sports Sprint Race www.makebreak.com this Sunday April
23rd in Wernersville, PA. There is no canoeing and it's just running,
biking and special tests. Sounds like a quick course (2-3hrs?) as far
as I can tell. I'm in LI and can pick someone up in NYC or NJ on the
way and carpool it.
Just looking to get out and have a good time and use this as some
training for upcoming races.
Drop me a line if interested smoothsean2003@...
Thanks
Sean
Just to let you know, "A" tick is not full force. Come to Dutchess County. If you hike here, you may come out of the woods with 8-10 on you!
Bottom line, do your body checks!!

In addition to the O'meet this Saturday, there is a
really good trail running race on Sunday called the
Leatherman's Loop in Pound Ridge, Westchester. It is
six miles, has multiple thigh-deep stream crossings
and is usually pretty muddy as well. Also in a couple
weeks, may fifth and sixth, is the West Point
Orienteering meet which I have done the past few years
and have found to be a really good event. They even
have a disclaimer, "do not touch any unexploded
ordinance" How could you turn that down?

Just another bit of information...
After our 10 yr old son was diagnosed with lyme in
January we asked the specialist about preventative
measures. We spend most of our free time in the woods.
He told us the standard stuff we all know about
repellant w/ deet, and to check for ticks after every
outing. And that the tick needs to be on you for more
than 24 hours.
But one new thing he also told us was that if you do
find you have been bit by a tick that is suspicious (a
deer tick and engorged) to just take two (500mg)
tablets of doxcycline and you won't contract the
disease even if the tick is infected. He prescribed
some for our family to have on hand.
I know some people aren't comfortable taking
antibiotics. But after seeing our son's knee swell up
to 3 x's it's normal size and having him unable to
walk for 3 weeks from lyme... we decided that one dose
of doxycycline is a better alternative.
Treatment for our son was high dosage of oral
antibiotics over two months and he is fine and already
hiking the trails again!!!
What did they do when they found the tick that was on
you had Lyme? Did they put you back on antibiotics?
The doctor told us our son will test positive for Lyme
for up to 5 years since he had the disease. I would
imagine the same is true for you. I am wondering what
they do if you are bit and the blood test can't tell
you if you have the disease. Do they treat or do they
wait for symptoms?

FYI all,
At the April Fool's Rogaine I found a tick on me. Was a little
surprised and thought it was a bit early for them to be out.
(I was bitten with bull seye and all last year, treated after initial
sickness and no further issues. You would think that would teach
me....)
So, the tick I pulled off after the Rogaine I brought to the doctor
and they sent it out for testing. Sure enough it came back with
Lyme.
The general rule is that the tick needs to be on you for at least
24hrs. The active season varies depending on who you ask but appears
to already be upon us. Treatment is pretty basic antibiotics.
Just an FYI for everyone to break out the repellant and stay healthy.
