I was wondering does anyone know any doctors specializing in like
sports medicine in the NJ area? I've been dealing with bad cramping
issues for the past few years. I've tried additional stretching,
electrolyte caps, hammergels etc. I would really like to know
what's going on with my muscles.

Any help would be greatly appreaciated

Thanks

Barry

I stubbornly refused to use the trail map, relying only on the topo, so we pretended we were in strange territory, using trails if they happened to be going our way! It gives you a sense of being in a totally different park! It was a blast to be running the course for a change...there were many creek crossings, and many, MANY steep climbs. The freedom to fly down the other side was irresistable- it felt like we were running down sand dunes!! (And it was WARM enough to enforce that feeling!) I couldn't even wear a shell yesterday!!

hahahaha!!! Steve is still right: the fluffy stuff is great to run in....even over treacherous knee-wrenching, back-thwarting ledges and boulders!!! (This is the way I remember that trail!!)

We joined Hugo and the gang today and only used our
snowshoes for about 20 minutes until we decided we
could travel much faster with just trail shoes even in
the untracked snow.

Correction Senator. Despite wideheld belief to the contrary the Raid was never
sponsored
by the tobacco company Gauloises. I can give you the official long story offline

I'd like to try and make it to the winter nav exercise
you are putting on but it looks like i'm up the creek
with out a paddle or more appropriately off the trail
with out any snowshoes. Unfortunately EMS has rented

totally panting and frustrated with in minutes or if
it is doable with some burning quads and your normal

Just wanted to let everyone know that there were a number of factors that
went into the decision to cancel the Fahnestock event.  We had some pesky
little course issues with park management...couple that with the fact that
we didn't have snow (that is until this weekend)...which in turn delayed
some people from signing up.  It all snowballed (no pun intended) into the
call to cancel.  BUT....we are all set for Northfield on March 6th...hope to
see you all there.

I was very distressed to hear today from John and
Brian that the reason the Genesis race was canceled
was due to a low turnout.  Sure this is the off season
and it is cold, but there are certainly enough of us
out there with the AR bug to participate. . .heck they
were even supplying snowshoes.

That is just one example.  The bigger problem is when
we lose a sponsor like Balance Bar. The reason this
happens is because they are not generating a return on
their investment from the sponsorship.  In the end it
is all about dollars and cents to these guys. If they
cannot justify an ROI on their sponsorship by seeing a
meaningful lift in their sales, then they will market
their product somewhere else.

So, if we all want to enjoy these well run events and
occasional free goods we have to support our sponsors.
This means actually going out and buying balance bars
and shopping at EMS (and using your race coupons to
show them where you came from).

We can all have more, better and safer events . . .did
anyone say prize money?(I am starting to dream here)
if we help promote the companies that make our sport
possible.

Please do what you can to go the extra mile, consume
their products and certainly endorse them to your
friends.  If we all make an effort to pitch, in we can
make an impact.

yumm-yumm... I can still taste those filter-free Gauloises tar patches on my lips...I was literally rolling my own Drum tobacco cigarettes as I watched the Eco-Challenge on TV in '96 ('95?) I still get a hankering for a smoke after a good fried shrimp dinner...

those were the days: nothing to do but eat and drink and write and read, do chores, play w/ the kids, fix up stuff around the house, tinker under the hood of my favorite sports car, watch a little football, toss back a couple w/ the guys...

now all I get to do is spend time w/ my beautiful wife Janice in the great outdoors- running and hiking and biking and sledding and snowshoeing and shopping for more gear...

OK enough already hugo......

I know of at least 3 people renting 'shoes from EMS (gotta love' em) for the nav event this Sunday. NYARA or it's affiliates have something going on almost every weekend and the folks at Genesis put on top-notch events. Perhaps the tech skills required for skiing section may keep some away from the winter events but overall you have made a good point JR.

Having said that, I'd like to point out that I will be using my xmas present (National Geographic TOPO! software purchased at EMS) for the maps this weekend and the orienteering controls were purchased from www.866gaiters.com (aka GO! Orienteering) In adddition to o-supplies, our good friend Gale has a HUGE selection of Salomon packs for CHEAPER than cheap prices!! He has done NYARA members WAAAAY right in the past!

EMS has this sweet deal where you buy online but PICK-UP at your local store!! IT's AT LEAST 10%CHEAPER!! I saved over $20 on the above software that way!! EMS has really committed to AR in the last year (CONGRATS JEN!!) and they get almost all my business because of it, not to mention their great prices, selection and customer service...PHEW!!

hear hear!!!

I rather think we're all afraid to embarrass ourselves
on xc skis.

Races don't have to be sponsored by sport-specific
companies - two of the biggest races of the last
decade were sponsored by cigarette companies (Raid and
Mild Seven).

#1 reason to race w/ Chris Rice in winter races:
Because he knows where to find arcane news stories!!!?

Heck I coulda gotten out w/ just a 6 pack of Pepsi!!

Rumor has it you can see the Riceman in action this Sunday, 9am at the Shepherd's Pond parking lot. Don't be too down-hearted if he can't make it though, plenty of other notables will be strapping on their Redfeathers and Dual-tracs....Seems there is another in the continuing series of nav trainings going on! 7 controls, 7 miles, you do the math! Snowshoes most highly recommended, postholers will be swearing before they leave the parking lot...1:24K maps beautiful TOPO! graphics and sunny mid 30s warmth!!  If you can't make Sunday, join me tomorrow @ 10am (same place) as I set the course!! Email me offlist if you're comin' either day- we'll see ya there!

Attention Racers:

Don't miss out on a fun and challenging 24-36 Hr race in the (hopefully)
warm sunshine state (Florida) next month (Feb 19-20).

AND

Get an idea of what the 2005 USARA National Championships might look and
feel like!

Here's the scoop:

The 2005 Swamp Stomp is almost full (Over 50 teams! Only 5 or 6 slots
left!!). This race is going to be great fun and great competition
with strong teams from all over the US coming (like Hooked on
Outdoors, ATP, AFRE, Endeavor, Go Lite, and more--see list of teams on our
message
board: wecefar.com/forum).
We are excited to see all of the NYARA teams that are coming!!
Any more takers?!?

Details:
SWAMP STOMP
24-36 Hr AR
Feb 19-20, 2005
Hernando County

2 or 4 person teams
No support crew needed, and we provide boats.
Cash prizes for coed 4 person teams!
GREAT schwag prizes for other divisions!
"Special" mid-race (stage) prizes as well!!

Any group with 5 or more teams representing them are entered into a drawing
for a special prize!! So far we have 4 NYARA teams! If one more registers,
they all have a chance of winning more great schwag!!

www.wecefar.com/swamp2005.htm

ALSO,
Did you know that Swamp Stomp is a USARA Natls Qualifier?
And that USARA National Championships are going to be in Florida ("Tampa
area") this year?
And that WeCeFAR (directors of Swamp Stomp) is designing the USARA Nationals
course?

Hmmmm....
Might be a good idea to check out this Swamp Stomp to prep for Natls...

But don't delay--we're almost sold out!!
We hope to see you in the swamp!
