Hi Josh,
I recently re-subscribed to the NYARAEDG list after competing in the High Rock Challenge last week, so I just recently heard about volunteering for Aid Stations at the North Face Endurance Challenge in Bear Mountain. I find myself in a position to be able to volunteer to camp out Friday night and do a volunteer shift on Saturday. I'd like to say that I'm able to handle a Captain position, but only you can make that determination. I'll introduce myself.
I'm 46 years old and just found out how out of shape I am while running in the High Rock with my wife.
I was in the Coast Guard from 1988 to 1998. During that time, I did search and rescue ops on the Oregon coast and pollution investigation in the NY/NJ area. I can handle myself in stressful situations and I know how to talk to people who are stressed out without upsetting them further.
I worked at the NYC Marathon for two years during my time on Ft. Wadsworth, Staten Island. My duties included all aspects of set up, traffic control, liaison with the NYPD Command Center, and tear down.
I worked at the 5 Boro Bike Tour four times over the past 7 years. The first two times I worked both set up and clean up at Ft. Wadsworth and included Liaison with NYPD (sitting in an air-conditioned trailer with a radio, Woohoo!), traffice control, security, and running interference for the EMTs dealing with swarms of people at the first aid station.
I worked with Nick Moore at two of the Balance Bar events in their final season. I was assigned to the Kayak section and did set up for a few days prior and tear down afterwards. During the race, I pretty much ran the Kayak section, because Duke (the Kayak director) was running back and forth between the start/finish and the lake, and spent alot of time joking around with the racers. If I can put a smile on someone's face when they're muddy and feel like crap, it makes my day.
I volunteered for the High Rock challenge for one event a few years ago. I ended up working in the food tent at the festival, but I helped out quite a bit in setting that morning.
Although I don't have the certification cards, I was trained last year in First Aid, AED and CPR. My company had in-house people to do the training with proper trainer certs, but for some reason, never issued the cert cards.
I've done some other volunteer positions at various events and worked for a while doing security at the PNC Bank Arts Center, but those are the highlights.
All that said, I know what I need to camp out in Bear Mountain. I'm able to be self-sufficient for one night :) However, I have a few questions for you...
Will the aid station be accessible in my vehicle or will I rely on event transport?
Will I have access to a porta, or should I bring my shovel and paper?
Aside from emergencies that will result in a DNF, what assistance am I able to provide to the racers?
What other resources will you provide at the aid stations?
The last question, I realized, is just curiosity because I'm sure I'll have explicit instructions either before or on race day. At any rate, let me know what you think and I'll, at the very least, volunteer for sleep over and aid station worker bee.
Thanks,
Randy

Steve,
We are still in need of volunteers for the race. We also need people to camp out at Aid Stations on Friday evening. They will receive a $100 gift card per aid station. We then have a few spots for an early morning volunteer position which will afford them another $25 gift card. So there is the potential of Camping Out and doing a volunteer shift and making $125 of gear from The North Face Store.
Not a bad deal if you like camping out.
We also need a driver during the day for pick up and drop off of bags and people.
If anyone is interested please get in touch with me ASAP.

Josh - I just wanted to pass along some info that I'm not sure if you're aware of. I ran the first half of the 1/2 marathon course today and soon after the start when the trail is about to go under the second underpass, a sizeable tree has fallen and will most certainly cause a backup if someone doesn't take a chainsaw to it. Also, soon after the course turns west/northwest onto 1777W, a large tree has fallen across the trail. People can work their way around it through sticker bushes but you may want to let someone know about that too.
Email me if you have any questions.
