Volunteer Job Descriptions
Aid Station Captain
Captains are responsible for volunteers at their respective aid
station. They will be on radio in frequent communication with the event staff.
This position coordinates/recruits aid station volunteers leading up to the
event. Primary race day responsibilities: manage aid station volunteers, track
runners and relay information to Race Director, and provide directional
assistance. These positions require previous trail race or aid station
volunteer experience and are subject to approval by the Volunteer Coordinator.
Aid Station Volunteer
Volunteers will set up their aid station, track runners, provide
directional support, distribute fluids and food, collect lost and found items,
and assist the event staff in breaking down each aid station. Select aid
stations will also be responsible for pacer check-in procedure and drop bag
management. These responsibilities will be explained in further detail by
the Volunteer Coordinator as race day approaches. Aid station positions
require a minimum age of 16, unless accompanied by an adult or chaperone. These
volunteer positions are great for running clubs and other large groups looking
to volunteer as a team. Aid station themes, decorations and costumes are
encouraged to give runners an extra boost of energy during their race!
Awards Tent
Volunteers will assist event staff in organizing and
distributing awards and raffle prizes during each of the four award ceremonies.
They will monitor the awards tent at all times to ensure prizes do not
“walk away.”
Course Marshal
Course Marshals will be positioned at key intersections on-
course to provide directional assistance to runners as they continue down the
trails. In certain situations, course marshals will be on radio and/or
stationed at road crossings and will be required to stop runners allowing traffic
to pass. These positions require a minimum age of 18, unless accompanied by an
adult or chaperone.
Festival Breakdown Crew
Volunteers will help event staff breakdown all event items, such
as tents, tables, chairs, branded tablecloths and specific sponsor items. All
supplies will be inventoried and loaded onto a 48’ truck for transport to
the next event. We recommend college to middle aged men willing to do
some heavy lifting.
Festival Captain
The Festival Captain is responsible for assisting the Volunteer
Coordinator and the event staff to coordinate and monitor volunteers at the
Finish Festival. This position may be on radio to communicate with event staff.
They will oversee the following areas: volunteer check-in, runner check-in and
chip timing, gear check, parking, finish line crew, 10K/Half Marathon food
tent, awards tent, on-site packet pickup, and festival breakdown. This position
requires previous event experience and is subject to approval by the Volunteer
Coordinator.
Festival Operations Crew
Volunteers will keep the Finish Festival area clean and
contribute to event’s effort to be environmentally responsible by
recycling. These positions are great for youth groups/clubs.
Finish Line Crew
Volunteers are stationed next to the finish line to congratulate
participants as they complete their race. They will also remove the
timing chip from each participant’s shoe, distribute water and sports
drink, and hand out Gore-Tex 50M and 50K finisher medals as the ultra distances
cross the finish line. These positions are great for youth groups/clubs.
Gear Check
Volunteers will be responsible for checking runners’ gear
on race morning, either to remain at the Finish Festival for their return or to
be dropped at selected aid stations along the course. These positions are great
for youth groups/clubs.
Half Marathon/10K Food Tent
Volunteers will be responsible for basic food preparation (ex.
cutting fruit), restocking and clean up at this aid station-like-tent.
The tent will serve fruit, bagels, chips and candy to Half Marathon and
10K participants.
On-Site Packet Pickup
Volunteers will work with a member of the event staff to
distribute race bags and shwag to those runners that did not attend packet
pickup on Thursday or Friday. These positions are great for youth groups/clubs.
Parking
Volunteers will assist and direct runners/spectators where to
park on-site at the Start/Finish and may be required to be on radio and/or
check Endurance Challenge parking passes.
Pre-Race Packet Pickup
Volunteers will assist a member of the event staff with packet
distribution to participants of each distance. They will check runner IDs,
retrieve corresponding race numbers and timing chips, and gather goody bag
items, while answering any questions participants may have.
Runner Check In/Chip Timing
Volunteers will assist the event staff in handing out bib
numbers and timing chips to those runners checking in before each of the four
races.
Runner Pickup and Bag Drop
Volunteers are needed before the Gore-Tex 50M and 50K races to
deliver participant drop bags to their respective aid stations. They will also
drive to aid stations as needed to pick up runners that drop out or do not make
the hard cutoff times. Volunteers may be on radio in communication with event
staff. These positions require submission of valid driver’s license for
